The service, food, and beer was wonderful. The sauerkraut is clearly homemade and made the stop absolutely worth it. Even if you are not a fan of hot beer, you definitely should try the schnitzel.

We had high expectations for this place but left very disappointed. The food was not bad but the service was very poor. We waited almost two hours for our food and our server never came once to check in on us. Overall it was a very disappointing experience.

Brisket fries were super good. Do not get the fish and chips. I couldnt finish one. The Garlic fries were fries with minced garlic on top. It was quite disappointing because there was an upcharge. I was expecting maybe melted butter, spices and of course, garlic. it was quite comical and gross. I paid cash and i wasnt given my exact change. it was with a large party so I didnt want to make a fuss. Really like the area. Wont be back.

First and last time ever going here. We had an extremely disappointing experience. My group and I waited over 3 hours due to the incredibly slow service from Geena. We saw her only 4 times throughout our entire visit. She promised to bring silverware but never did, so we had to get it ourselves. She also failed to check on us after our food was served. When we finally requested our checks, it took 37 minutes to receive them, and to our surprise, a 25% gratuity was automatically included. Never have I encountered such a high mandatory tip before. It felt like Geena didnt make an effort to provide good service because she knew she would get paid regardless. This was a terrible experience overall.

What a pleasant surprise! Unbeknownst to us, my husband and I arrived 5 minutes before closing and I was prepared to be turned away. Instead, we reviewed the menu quickly and placed our order! We sat out on the patio at dusk, which was perfect. My husband loved his bacon cheeseburger and I loved my fried chicken sandwich! Absolutely fresh and well presented. The true star is the garlic fries. Chefs kiss! As well as our server Rafferty who was warm, welcoming and completely professional even though we arrived close to closing time. We ended with a nice walk on the Riverwalk. We love our date nights and we will be returning....and order dessert next time. Great food, wonderful atmosphere!

Excellent overall! Warm, welcoming staff, an excellent selection of house-brewed beers. The brewmaster has skills. Fish tacos: not fried fish (which I didn t expect, as all the other fish offerings are fried), but well done nevertheless. Came with a very good (though very salty) bacon bean soup. The star: Tres Leches Cake. Another patron asked me about it. It s perfect: good crumb, evident layering with a perfect line of filling- topped with a cinnamon dusted whipped cream and crowned with a perfectly sliced strawberry. I wanted two strawberries the red sangria was fine.

It s always been really bad service past months maybe longer. As soon as we ask about beers they list out multiple they are out of. I have been here with coworkers at open and they are still out of tons they advertise. Regardless of day. One time we asked just to sample/try one beer and she said the bartender is too busy - no. Bro you are a brewery that doesn t let you try beers and is always out of multiple. Go to Kunstler, the German one nearby for never needing to worry about which beers they are out of and much nicer staff!! Hopefully this bar fails so we get a nicer one to fill in soon!

Very pricey for what you get. Given, its close to the river yet its not next to the river. Beer was good but service was sub par. Servers came to pick up our dishes while I still had food left on the plate. Brought us the bill even if we did not ask it, as if to say guys is time to leave. Yet they had empty tables outside. Rip off with all the charges they add to the sales tax. There are much better places where you can go and have a drink and eat by the river. In my opinion the Pear is way better. I should not have left the tip.

They still had some of the seasonal from last season and it was really good. The complex its in is really cool, too. Take time to visit the shops and grab another beer when youre done.

The service was great, she was in top of everything and super friendly. She gave a great suggestion for the jingle stout (I think thats what it was called) and that tasted fantastic! They have a smaller selection of brewed beers but I appreciate that because they focus onir craft. We ordered the coconut shrimp and lemon pepper wings. The coconut shrimp were good but the lemon pepper wings were not good. There was WAY too much pepper on them and it ruined the whole order. Other than that great service and good beer!

We were on a brewery crawl and this was one of our stops. There was no one at the front when we came in and no sign saying to wait or seat yourself. We waited for a little bit but finally went outside to find a table. DON T sit outside here! The view is nice but they keep barrels of spent hops out on their patio and the flies are atrocious!!! We moved inside and a young girl approached us and asked if we had been seated by someone. We told her no one was there when we came in. She seated us at a table inside. We ordered 2 frozen drinks and 4 craft beers. The frozen drinks were ok but only one of the 4 beers were drinkable. Not cold, bad taste. We didn t order anything else, paid out tab, and left with almost 4 full drinks on the table.

We ordered wings and they were super small, overcooked and chewy. Our entrees weren t any better. I ordered the chicken breast, bacon club. The chicken breast were cut up and also overcooked and chewy. The bread was soaked in butter and touch to chew. My friend ordered the chicken fried steak and it was the saddest cut of meat and also overcooked and chewy. The vegetable medley was overcooked and the veggies were small. We will not be coming back. We had been here once before and it was nothing like this.

What a great strategically placed brewery! It s the perfect spot to grab a meal and a great beer after a long Mission Trail bike ride! After renting a bike from the Blue Star Bike Shop I rode the trail. By the time I was done, I was starving. This place was only feet away so I decided to stop in. The burger was great and the raspberry beer was so refreshing. The waitress was super nice, I wasn t sure which beer I wanted so she gave me a taste of the two I was deciding between. Downtown San Antonio is eminently walkable, which is a huge plus in my world. I hate having to find parking in urban spaces. If you are staying on or near the Riverwalk, you can truly walk to just about anywhere that matters. I was at the Hampton Inn, and it was an easy one-mile walk on city streets and the Riverwalk to get to Blue Star. The front desk assured me that it would be safe for a tourist walking through there at night; I took their word for it, and all ended well. I started with a flight of brews, including Flying Pig Extra Pale Ale (5% ABV), Cinco Peso Pale Ale (5% ABV), Green Tractor IPA (6.5% ABV), and Jingle Ale (obviously a seasonal brew; unknown ABV). Each was a hit, although as with most holiday seasonal, one glass is enough. Merry Christmas and all that, but sometimes the flavorings get the better of me. One and done on that. But the Cinco Peso Pale Ale was my fave of the rest, so I had a couple of pints, and also had a 64-ounce growler filled as a souvenir. Yeah. I had to lug that thing a mile back to my hotel. The things you do for good beer. For dinner, I ordered the house-made veggie burger patty served as a lettuce wrap (saving calories for beer, yo). It s a nice blend of mushrooms, bell peppers, carrots, faro, and black beans. Many standard beef burgers are also on the menu, as well as shrimp, chicken, fish, pork, ribeyes, and more. If you leave hungry, it s on you. This is a must for visitors craving a local quaff and nosh. Two thumbs up. Vegetarian options: Limited but sufficient! The house-made veggie burger is delish!

This was my last walking stop of the night on my south-of-town personal brewery hop so I walked here from Dos Sirenos. The only thing I got was a Texican Lager which was okay. If I came back here to drink another beer I would try something else. I sat at the bar and the service was quick. The bartender gave me a water without me asking and kept it full. The staff was friendly and attractive. The best part about this place might be the location. It s right on the riverwalk. If the Veo bikes would let you ride on the riverwalk it would be a really nice ride down to here.

Uneatable. A traditional reuben sandwich consists of thinly sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut on rye bread slathered with Russian sauce. Since it cost $15 for a Reuben Sandwich, I feel this needs to be voiced. The meat slice was cut thick and tough, I couldnt bit through the slices. The sauerkraut and Russian sauce, well there wasnt any, they put sauté cabbage and didnt come with no Swiss cheese. I do not recommend the horrible reuben sandwich. Parking: hard

We ve been here before and we ll be back again. First of all (and keep this in mind as you are reading any of the negative reviews) this is a brewery. It s not a bar and it s not a restaurant. They serve food but their primary business is brewing beer. If you want cocktails there is an AMAZING speakeasy (Bar 1919) literally next door with the largest selection of whiskey in the entire state of Texas! It s a great place and deserves a visit. The food at Blue Star is not gourmet dining but it is on par or better than average pub food. On our most recent trip my wife and I split an order of brisket jalapeño poppers and an order of jerk chicken. The poppers were smokey in flavor but not loaded with beef. The jerk chicken was sweet and spicy, everything was served warm and seemed fresh. The food not spectacular but it was definitely above average. We started with the sour ales. I had the cherry lambic and she had the raspberry. Hers was better but we liked both of them. When the food came I got a pint of Green Tractor, one of their regular IPAs. It was floral almost to the point of being perfumy, but in no way off-putting. It had a nice, earthy backbone with a malty balance and a smooth bitter finish. I like this place because it s right on the river so it s nice to walk around before or after enjoying a pint. There s several other businesses sharing the parking lot and it s easy to spend a little time visiting the other venues and seeing what s going on.

It pains me to write this review because Im a local and have tried to give Blue Star Brewery so many opportunities thinking that maybe Ive just shown up on off times. I want this to be a great place to hang out SO BAD. But...the food is absolute garbage. On multiple occasions the food has come out bland, sloppy, cold, you name it. I could deal with that, its a brewery, I dont NEED to eat there. The last straw was on my last visit when they charged us $9 for 3.8% ABV sour pints. The same beer thats always been there, not a small batch or seasonal, the same Southtown Sour. And $7.50 for the rest of the beers. Im all for supporting the local craft beer scene but those prices are ridiculous for subpar beer. And as someone else mentioned in the reviews... its San Antonio, make a decent margarita! Thats like SATX restaurant 101. Im done with trying to make excuses for this place. I wont be visiting for a long, long time to even give them a chance at redemption. And Ill actively make sure none of my local group of friends stop by either.

Blue Star wont be a first choice for beer or food unless youre in the area. That doesnt make this brewery a bad option, its just a perfect alright one. The beers are all pretty standard and inoffensive. Theyre great if youre with your dad or just need a drink after a run. The food is your typical bar food - lots if fried things and many shades of beige. The best thing about Blue Star Brewing is the service. The waitress I had was one of the best ever and made sure I was taken care of and thought of. The bartender was also almost at that level. They deserve all the praise. Be sure to check out events here as they do lots of fun outreach programs and they even host astronomy nights! Parking: If you dont find parking in Blue Star lot, drive half a block east and youll find free street parking.

Then we had the bacon cheese burger and some garlic fries. All were very tasty and filling. The only thing I was disappointed on was the craft beers. I got really excited for the barnstormers line they had. It was a fruit flavored beer which went too far with the fruit flavor. It almost just tasted like a wine. Maybe next Ill try something a little more standard. Our waitress was amazing and got everything to us fast and attended to every need.

I reviewed this restaurant in 2017 and gave it 5 stars. I suspect it is under different management as this visit was much different. Our waitress was pleasant but inattentive. She was covering the bar, but there was only 1 couple at the bar and us inside the restaurant. I had to ask about the frozen cocktail I ordered when the appetizer came out, I had to go to the bar to ask about desert (even though we already indicated we wanted desert) and had to go to the bar to ask for the check once desert was finished. We ordered the garlic and parsley fries,, the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies and chocolate cake. The garlic fries had 2-3 tablespoons of fresh garlic (overpowering), the mashed potatoes I am not sure what they were, but they were greasy and gritty (not sure they were even potatoes), the chicken fried chicken was okay, the grilled veggies were good (but greasy) and the chocolate cake was average. We will not eat here again.

Bottom line, up front? This Brewery has okay beer that almost never rotates. Their food menu is robust... But only the tacos and wings are worth it. Even then weve had wings that werent cooked through and tacos missing essential ingredients. Want good beer? Go to Stellas around the corner. Lots on tap that rotates! Want alcohol? Go to 1919! One of the best bars in San Antonio and probably 200ft away. Blue Star has slow service, boring beer selections, and the food quality and consistency leaves a lot to be desired. Their location is great! They could be awesome! If they cut their menu in half and cooked/prepared those items well and rotated their beers a bit more... They would easily be twice as good as they are now. Pass! Go to the nearby places! P.S. Why the heck do they have 8+ cameras I can view just from sitting at a table?

I hate to give bad reviews, but when you charge $9 for a pint of a sour that is only a 4.3 ABV and is nothing special I get mad. This is starting to happen more and more causing real beer lovers to take a second look at breweries who don t post prices and overcharge for their mediocre beer. I promise you will not succeed when you do this to people who know a thing or two about beer & brewing. Shame on you! Not OK

Sat at the bar and tried the Bulverde pils, which was clean with a hint os something grassy like dill. We also ordered the apache amber. Very good. The chicken fried chicken was nicely battered, with savory gravy, and the mashed potatoes tasted like they had parmesan. The dish comes with delicious, seasoned vegetable medley. Cant wait to go back!

At first the restaurant seemed like a great spot. Good selection of food, a variety of drinks, scenery was pleasant. We were planning our next visit Up until we finished our meal. My husband went too the mens restroom to use the restroom of course. When he noticed a man with his Apron on and his Gloves on, walk into the resroom, used the restroom, than walked right back out without washing or discarding his Gloves. DISGUSTING! ON NEWS YEARS DAY. And to top it off he had a real bad cough! _After we paid for our meal, we complained to the waitress. (I didnt want them to think we wanted a free meal at all!) And the waitress than told the Manager on duty. Waitress came back to the table and told us that the manager said she was going to talk to the cook! Poor customer service from the manager indeed! The waitress was embarrassed and very apologetic. WE WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THAT PLACE EVER AGAIN!

I came by for the umpteenth time (I have no idea why I keep trying) today for some lunch and a couple of micheladas. I waited at the bar for ten minutes without so much as a greeting. Finally somebody managerial looking came out and asked if I d been helped. She offered me a water. One of the servers ( a very nice guy and the best part of this experience) was asked to make my drink. I decided to go sit in his section rather than wait at the bar any longer for a bartender. To my surprise, a person who I d seen pass me by several times, was in fact the bartender ! I remember this place being awesome: great bartenders, great service and a heck of a place to pass the time. It would seem those days are long gone.

I had a $9 bowl of tortilla soup and it was too expensive for what I got. The bowl was at most 12 oz, it had sloshed over the sides in the kitchen, the taste was mild, and the vegetables were underdone. Im not sure why they skimped their attention on this dish (particularly in SA, where its not hard to make an impressive tortilla soup), because everyone else at the table had fair portions per price.

I think I should mention that I am a *very* easy person to please and I usually only review places that I thoroughly enjoy. However, this place was mediocre in almost every way. I felt like I wasted my money. The beer was no good and the food was overpriced and uninteresting. On top of that, we arrived 10 minutes before the happy hour ended and they refused to give us drinks at a reduced price because we arrive too close to the cutoff. This place is in a wonderful location and could be a San Antonio hidden gem. It just misses the mark. My advice is to just go to Stella or Halcyon instead.

Props to the server who was going nonstop trying to cover more tables than she should have been assigned. That said, the beer was good. The food was okay. We had the Belgium double, called Fun Fun, it was excellent. Then Ashley recommended the Barnstormer Quad. It was probably one of the best beers I have ever had. I had the super nachos with brisket. We will send someone right out... No one ever came. Obviously the employees at this establishment do not care about proving good service - or any service for that matter - you would think a manager would step in. Needless to say, we got up and left... guess they dont need the business - surely we wont be back!
