My plus one and I attended a private event through Yelp Elite and were far from impressed with the organization of the event - we were not disappointed with anything, but how we came to ask ourselves how we have not heard of Briscoe Western Art Museum!? The museum is tucked in the heart of downtown in a beautiful building - The staff were overwhelmingly friendly, welcoming, and informative. We were given a tour of how the art gallery came together and history of the artists themselves. I assumed we would come into frame with oil paintings and art drawing pieces, but the thought of seeing sculptures slipped my mind. The Procession by Paul Moore which was a bronze and bronze wood painting that depicted 3D form, the Northern Plateau Women by Doug Hyde which was a beautiful pink Portuguese marble, the Chiricahua Apache by Allan Houser which was bronze art, and the Buffalo Nickel by Greg Woodard which was bronze art and 3D form. Absolutely stunning. The event ended with a showing of the movie, Killers of the Flower Moon which I highly recommend to watch! Outstanding performances.

I wont be attending this museum anymore after I tried to go on a Sunday and was turned away. I got the KSAT things to do this weekend newsletter which stated that this past sunday and today were free to local residents. I was told it wasnt free. I showed the person at the desk the email with the information and showing that it said it was free to locals and they still refused. The reason why I wrote this was because of how after I showed proof that it said it was free they just sat there with nothing else to say waiting for me to leave. I even informed them that this was a waste of time walking there in this texas heat and they didnt care. Will not be going back here after that anymore.

We really enjoyed this museum and the special exhibit Survival of the Fittest which was amazing. The space is very large and it s well laid out. The sculpture garden and Riverwalk area is also beautiful. The diorama of the Alamo is definitely worth seeing along with all of the fantastic paintings and bronzes. We spent 3 hours but I could have spent more time. Don t miss this gem.

Beautiful museum! Lots of artifacts to look see from different eras and locations. Its amazing to compare & contrast between the clothes, uniforms, saddles, guns, swords and buildings. Take a stroll through the many art sculpted and painted; reminisce what life could have been like by reading the captions, poems and listening to the audio recordings. Perfect for self guided tours, history lovers and to peak childrens interest in History. It was our first time here, but we will be coming back. Place was immaculate, clean, spacious and well planned. Dont forget to visit the souvenir shop for sweet finds for all budgets! Paid parking is located every where. Thanks!

Took the family since it was right by the river walk. It was clean with good staff, but other than that not for me. Lack luster compared to a lot of the museums and exhibits I ve been to. Overpriced for what is available. Additionally, a lot of the art just lists who bought it and name of artist. No real depth or detail to the description. Just felt I was walking through some random persons house that was trying to show off.

Beautiful collection of historic and fine art. Over half of the collection is up for auction, however you feel about that. The staff is friendly and the gift shop is larger than most. The collection is on the smaller side so dont expect to get lost for the day here, I also didnt care for the curators choices in a lot of the museum, the pieces are great but not the presentation. Still worth a trip if part of a fuller itinerary.

I think the price is a little high for the content(s) that exist in the museum. But if you like Western history its a good place.

*3.5 My husband and I enjoyed the museum. We found out recently that he has Indigenous roots. Being mindful of the treatment of Indigenous people across Turtle Island (North America) over many centuries, what could be more culturally-respectable is helping showcase more pieces from Indigenous artists - note that this requires conversations around ownership. For example, conversations that include the returning of work back to THEIR Indigenous communities. Next, what bothered us was the cowboy exhibit. It was described as diverse...although peoples positionally are valid and we all have different experiences, we saw two artworks that included Black, African and/or Caribbean people, with the overwhelming majority being white folks. Indeed, this exhibit was from one curator. I would probably not describe the exhibit as showcasing diverse people.

This past Friday I and some of my family visited the Briscoe Museum with our elderly parents. Our father had grown up in the 1950s just a few blocks south of this Museum and was excited to visit San Antonio and this museum. My younger brother and I both brought our young daughters because we were spending the week doing everything together with our parents. We arrived right when the Musuem opened and were kindly greeted by the lady at the front desk who then sold us the tickets and then gave the museum directions. We then started exploring the 3rd floor artifacts. About a half hour in, when we were all alone in a gallery on the southside, a male staff member came into the room and loudly said please control your child while pointing at my brothers 23 month old daughter who had just laid down on the floor without any of us yet noticing. She wasnt making any noise or disturbing anything. She had literally just laid down. My brother thought he had missed something and quickly picked her up, which caused her to start crying. The gentleman then stated that she was a trip hazard to others in the Museum. This might have been the case if there was anyone else around but, there were not. We went and looked and there were 2 other ladies on the 3rd floor in different rooms at the time and no one in the section we were located in. We all talked amongst ourselves after this but none of us could understand why we were approached in this manner. If the Museum doesnt want one year olds to do innocent one year old things, then dont allow children into the Museum. We all just wanted to leave the museum at that point and did shortly after. Everything else we did in San Antonio with our parents was wonderful, just not this place. There are proper ways to approach people with concerns but, this was not it.

Formerly the Old San Antonio Library, this museum has some really beautifully displayed pieces that are not only put on really good mounts but are easy to view and interact with. I wish some were interpreted a bit more, I know its technically an art museum, but just a bit more context on some of the pieces would be great. Furthermore, some history and interpretation of the building itself would be good, lots of architectural styles in one space, from Art Deco Facade, Neo-Classical Lobby, Baroque Celing, etc. That being said, it is definitely worth the admission price - plan on spending more than an hour there, the loads of wonderfully curated objects there.

If you are looking to understand a bit more of our history here in Texas, the different cultures and battles fought over centuries, this family-friendly museum is one I Highly recommend. Only 10yrs old, and housed where the previous Circus museum, and original San Antonio Library- they still have a small section on the first floor- existed, this Western Art Museum offers a well-rounded experience of art and culture that is Texas, and surrounding areas, that is worth the visit and time. And Brand New, opened on September 29th, the 150yr Cowboy tradition exhibition: Anouk Masson Krantz: American Cowboys Now through January 22, 2024 Showcasing the enduring traditions around ranching and rodeo life from an outsider s perspective, Anouk Masson Krantz: American Cowboys reflects the greatest virtues of America s heritage. Krantz captures the lives and surroundings of American cowboys with 100 images from her solo journey across America, providing an inspiring homage to the pioneering spirit and its enduring strength that is alive and well in today s modern world.

Small but nice museum in a beautiful building with 3 levels, with the top one having the most to offer. Some of the exhibits are very nice, but overall its more of a small museum. You dont need more than 1 hour to see everything. There is a museum shop with typical tourist products. Very friendly staff. Due to the size of the exhibition and the relatively high entrance fee, only 4 stars.

It was such a disappointment I was expecting more due to its price. I ve gone to other museums that cost less and gotten a lot more than this. It was mostly paintings with little history or no meaning behind it. Only the 3rd floor was okay. I wouldn t recommend anyone going.

I m only sharing a few photos of this place because I think it s important for people to come and see the history for themselves. We came here as a little family outing on a Thursday evening, about 2 hours before close and we had the whole place to ourselves basically! There s tons to read and look at. My favorite attraction was the interactive map of the Alamo. You re able to read about important figures and light up where they are to find them. It was really fun and very informative. The ONLY thing I would change would be to add more context for some things. I loved the pictures and sculptures but a lot of them didn t give any background. Just that they were donated from someone/somewhere. However, that aside there s still a bunch of information on other things through the museum. They offer Military/Veterans discount!!
