ASK FOR TERRANCE. Ive lived around the Pasadena, TX area my entire life. Ive gone to The Don Key many times in the past 25 years when I lived in La Porte, TX. Since I moved to Pearland, TX, about 10 miles away, I stopped going to the Don Key. My wife and I went to a football game in Pasadena and I saw the Don Key and said we should eat there. When we entered we were met with a smile and were seated at a table where Terrance was the server. What an amazing waiter. He had a big smile and a very pleasant attitude. He treated us like we were regulars of his and gave us amazing service. Now for the atmosphere. Don Key is an old restaurant that went through a recent renovation. The main dining room didnt change very much, but it looks as though they added a couple of small dining rooms and a large kitchen. The table we were seated at had a direct view of the ladies making tortilla. What a process!!! The food was better than it was 15 years ago. Typical TexMex, but it was good. The best soup Ive ever had was the Street Corn Soup, OH WOW it is so good. It is even better after chilling in the refrigerator over night and reheated. The spices get to marinate in the liquid and they explode in your mouth the second day. My wife had the Street Corn Soup our first visit and the Chicken Monterrey our second recent visit. She ate on that plate for three days, it was so much food. For me, I had the Sabroso plate, which like a previous review is a souped up Tostada, but it is hearty and definitely good. Our second visit I had the Street Corn Soup, and unfortunately there wasnt enough left over to take home. Terrance is great, the food is good, the prices are Great. Looking forward to going back!

Always good . Had to let them know to freshly cook my chicken cause it was coming out cold cause they precook the chicken breast now. So when I come in is to have freshly cooked chicken which takes 10 min and then Im good hot And fresh cooking

At a very good experience had fajitas for two beef had two other plates that had enchiladas and a Coldplay Margaritas were on the bomb and a beer waitress was good it was her time for her shifting in so she was kind of rushing us but not bad she just said Ill turn your table over to another server but we tipped her and still had another drink after that after she left and paid for it but we had a bet going on because I have been coming here for years and I could have sworn that yall put Budweiser beer in the beans and my boyfriend is a Bud light drinker and he took his straw and slip some of the juice out of my beans and he said no thats Bud light well the waitress came over and like I said we havent talked to her about it and we asked her what kind of beer do you put in the beans and she said Bud light so I lost the bet but like I said overall it was a very good experience I was celebrating late mothers Day for my son

Went with my mother for lunch on Saturday August 17th around 3 pm and we were immediately tended to by an apathetic hostess, she set down our plates and menus begrudgingly on the table. We hoped that was going to be the only off putting thing about our lunch at Donkey. However this theory was instantly shattered when we recieved our order. My mom ordered fish tacos and I had ordered the carne asada plate. To start off my moms tortillas were not even cooked, the carne was incredibly chewy and I could not even chew it down, and to top it off the charro beans we recieved smelled rancid and upon further inspection actually tasted horrendous. So essentially my mom paid 70 bucks for a meal we could not even eat. Our actual server was incredibly sweet but we definitely would not come back again.

The appetizer never came and then we were rushed with entrees coming. We got the Fiesta plate and Chile relleno! The sauce tasted like tomato sauce out of the can, no mexican spices! The food tastes out of can, Chile gravy, cheeses had no flavor. Skinny margarita awful! Too dark and creepy! Wont be back, I dont know how they are celebrating 40 years?

This restaurant has become an iconic part of Pasadena. It may have changed owners hands, but it has never changed having damn good food and some pretty damn tasty drinks. My parents used to bring me here, and now I happily bring my own kiddo here. Kid-friendliness: Theyve got a kids menu, crayons, and some fun stuff to look at. What else can you say.

Have passed by this place many times and decided to try it today. As an advisory to others, DO NOT COME HERE! To start off our server was very attentive to my husband but not myself, she would bring my husband a refill and not myself after visiting our tables many times. Then when our food came out the fajita was undercooked and over seasoned and the rice tasted old. While eating we then saw a server vaping around the restaurant even though there are signs posted with No Smoking. Once we were getting ready to leave the bartender had a drink ready for a customer when we saw not one but two servers try the drink and then take it out to the customer. This place is unsanitary and expensive for the quality of the food, type of service, and environment they have.

Me and my wife love this place. The problem or the only thing that keeps us from going more often is the way the tables are set up. Youre either sitting in traffic or sitting on top of a stranger next to you. You cant have a private conversation. If you want to have dinner and conversation, this is not the place. We love The DonKey and are rarely disappointed in a meal there. Tonight, I had the Shrimp Diablo, the first time, and was disappointed. The shrimp had very little flavor, unusual here. This LOOKED like a mexican food restaurant, that is where it ended. We had been seated for quite some time before we saw anyone. Finally, a waiter came to our table to see what we wanted to drink, by this time we were ready to order , which we did. He was not even our server. The girl who was brought our food did not introduce herself and brought water 5 minutes later because I asked when she sat my food down. I had a burrito plate , and my husband had a Sambrusco plate , which he did not realize was basically a souped-up tostada. I tried it and thought the shell tasted burnt. I had a burrito plate , and the whole thing was lame. The beans were very runny , the ground beef had no taste, and the cheese was non existant. The chips were ok, but I did not like the salsa at first , I dont like hot ( temperture) hot sauce, and where was ANY HEAT?? My husband asked for some hotter sauce , and they told him they had Chuloula !! This is the way Tex Mex food is.... REALLY??? We are from Corpus Christi and have plenty of hot sauce in our restaurants. The meat is all seasoned, and we have stiff refried beans that taste good. The manager, Haily, was very nice and did apologize for no hot salsa , and said the burritos were better with queso on them. Also, we are used to one big burrito, not 2 anemic ones. I did like the colorful lights and things on the ceiling. I also thought the prices were a bit high.

I cant speak highly enough about The DonKey. Those folks have been with me through the best of times, and the worst of times. I my ex-wife and I even went there on our wedding day, because we couldnt think of anything better to do with a limo. It was an epic experience. Some nice lady at the bar even bought us all a round of ritas because of how pasadena it was for people to hit the DonKey on their wedding day. The bar is fantastic. Christin is gone, now, but she was __the_best__ at keeping my glass full, and thats what is really important to me. Chris does a great job, as well. Taylor, though. Good grief, if you want to do work and not be distracted by other people at the bar who dont understand what youre doing, get a table with her. Shes my favorite waitress ever. Its like being at the bar, but at a table by myself. It dont get no better than that, and I know a little bit about these things. Ive searched the whole country looking for a place with a better mix of people, products, and prices than the DonKey, and there just isnt one. I love the DonKey, especially when Taylor is there.

This place has good food, but watch out because someone broke into my car in the parking lot and took my husbands wallet and granddaughters backpack, took my keys to my husbands car that he had keft in my car and came the next day to my driveway and stole my husbands car. The food is NOT good. Husband and I had the donkey enchiladas, their spanish sauce taste like straight can tomatoes and the tortillas were somewhat raw. I went to this restaurant on a Tuesday with 2 of my family members which isnt normal for us we normal go on fridays or Saturdays, and we were greeted by a female hostess she asked us if anywhere in the restaurant was fine. My mom told her that anywhere is fine, but just not the room with the metal roof this Is due to my dad being hard of hearing and when it gets loud in there he cant hear very well. Well when she made this requested this waiter was standing off to the side behind the hostess giving us a weird and nasty look when asked that us not wanting to sit in there was a problem she said well I mean its kind of hard not to hear in there when there is nobody in here which my mom replied with well normal when we come in here it gets packed quick and quite loud which she replied with in a very sarcastic tone well I hope to God this place gets filled. Then, after we were set, we asked the hostess for the waiters name, and her name was Taylor. I guess the hostess told her we asked for her name due to the fact that our whole visit evertime she would walk past our table, she would make passive-aggressive comments and yelling. Ex- this elderly couple walked in and me and my mom were having a discussion she was standing right next to me and began to yell hey sit them over her theres so many open tables and not to loud. As well as come on people, lets get this place filled up and loud. I know for a fact she was trying to start something and was poking at us as she would only do it by our table. Not to mention, i went to the bathroom to wash my hands there is 4 other mirrors in there and she chose the one I was washing my hands infront of to check her butt because shes had kids and she sneezed a little to hard and wanted to check for any wet spots she was wearing black pants. This behavior was inappropriate and not very needed as we were just trying to enjoy our meal and the rest of our day. We probably wont be back soon as this place seems to be okay with their waiters tweaking and being out right rude and gossiping about their customers.

Went here for happy hour, drinks and food were good. My complaint about our visit was that I ordered the Chile Relleno, without the ground beef, as I m a vegetarian. This dish is $15.50 and we were charged $19.75. On my receipt it said add parilla , which I don t even know what that is. Upon asking, I was told that I asked for veggies and so it s extra. A VERY UNPLEASANT white lady, who I didn t get the name of and who I presume to be the manager, seemed to come out looking for a fight. I mean, basic common sense- I took out the meat from a dish and asked for the vegetarian version of this dish, and now I m to pay more?!?! Nuh uh. She adjusted the bill, but her sour attitude and lack of understanding on a common sense matter was appalling. The Don Key in Houston, TX offers a Tex-Mex experience that hits some marks but falls short in others. However, the saving grace came in the form of their delightful margaritas, which were certainly a highlight of the meal. Anyone who doesnt speak Spanish cant do it and anyone who speaks English doesnt either, why dont they speak Spanish but the music is in Spanish, its enough to drive you crazy. You come out jumping crazy and manic. Dont come. Mexican restaurant in English... I repeat another visit to the place 03/20/23 and very bad service, my last visit to the place, what bad service

Wayyyy too loud for both me and my boyfriend. And the tables to us were just a little too close . The food was ok. Ive gone B4 some years back but I really dont recall the place to look the way it does now. I really thought it was big and more room inside. But the place stays busy like crazy. But for the life of me, I cant imagine why. Unless youre one who likes loud and crowded places. We wont be going back , for sure.

This place has been around for a minute and is one of those restaurants where everyone agrees once someone remembers to mention it for lunch. The food has yet to disappoint in decades of patronage. However, over the last few years, the service has retreated to hit or miss, and the sheer noise in a half full house is uncomfortable... unless you are with a group with a good time in the plans. Awesome place to start a friday night with friends-not so much if you want to have a normal volume conversation. Either way, recommend a call ahead to get your party on the wait list during dinnertime. Whenever possible, I sit outside to escape the cacaphony. This is one of those places where all the food on the menu is so good that Ill keep coming back despite knowing Ill be rolling dice on the other things that are make or break for me.

Food is usually good, but today, it was just average. Queso was lukewarm. The dish I had was fairly bland. Its probably the worst service Ive ever had there. I think our waitresses name was Autumn but I honestly cant remember. I can only describe her as white, kinda on the heavier side. It was like she was slamming our items on the table. She only came to check on us once after we received our food. We had to get up and get our own to-go boxes. Then, once we were ready to go, we had to go find her to pay.
