rating: 4.7
Welcome to the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. Founded in 1975 by over 500 community leaders under the leadership of George T. Abell, the Museum tells the story of petroleum and the rugged lives of men and women who sought a better life. What started as a community dream has, over time, become the nation’s largest museum dedicated to the petroleum industry and its pioneers. The Petroleum Museum has welcomed over one million visitors worldwide. It shares the petroleum and energy story and its impact on our daily lives through educational programs, interactive exhibits, an archives center and its Petroleum Hall of Fame.

If youre in Midland, definitely stop by the Permian basin petroleum museum. You think you know a lot about oil and where it came from this place will show you the true story. Plus they have a very cool auto racing area with lots of memorabilia. Its a worthwhile place to visit in Midland and we enjoy it very much.

This was fasinating. So well done, educational. Another reason to be grateful for the men and women who have gone before us as they worked hard, made scarifices so we today can enjoy what our Creator allowed to take place as the earth evolved through floods and earthquakes. Yes, some became wealthy through the discovery of oil and gas but they also paid for it in ways well never know. Better to be grateful than greedy.

Very neat museum to go through. This is probably the best Harvest Host we have stayed at yet. Other then a little road construction that made the GPS a little loopy getting off the HWY, it was very easy to get to and the large open parking lot made it easy as well. though we arrive later in the afternoon and didn t get to spend as much fine as we would have liked in the museum, we did get to walk the grounds for a while and look at all the older machinery. We will definitely make another stay when we are back in the region.

Interesting but it assumed a basic knowledge of the process (I wanted to understand the absolute basics of the drilling process and how it has changed over the years - finding the site, drilling, extracting and didnt really find a great overview). We also didnt realize how many things can be seen outside - we would have allotted our time differently had we known. The biggest problem inside the museum was overstimulation - too many lights, videos, sounds conflicting with each other. I actually needed to leave because of this which has never happened to me before.

This is an experience like no others. What was initially thought as a quick stop turned into hours of visit. A replica of one of the first oil rigs in Permian Basin, Santa Rita #2 sits next to the museum parking. My visit began with an introduction of how fossil fuels are formed, followed by how the region thrilled after the discovery of oil reservoirs, along with a section that transports visitors back in time. Some of the most intriguing exhibits are different earth layers collected from drilling activities, a variety of drilling heads, and how petroleum companies make the most of a reservoir. It is a shame that Permian Basin was out-competed by the rise of the demonic OPEC in the 1960s, of whom everyones pocket is at the mercy. Lets also not forget how the avaricious giants are profited from such establishment. There are also fascinating paintings portraying the industry and recreated race cars that you dont think they would ever exist.

The colors on some of these were truly breathtaking. There is a large art gallery with some of the best pieces of art Ive seen. Very rich in detail as it relates to the area. You can view the innovative history of the Chaparral Racing and sit inside a replica car. Fun! I brought the family in just to visit the gift shop over the summer as I hadnt visited since I was a kid and the daughters hoped to get a pump jack ornament of some kind. Bizarrely, theres almost no such thing there - nothing cute and affordable anyway. Seems like theyre missing a trick.

FOUR museums under roof! This is a terrific museum to illustrate how the oil and natural gas industry operates. Besides the history, it shows very good 3D animations of how the gas and oil is extracted. VERY educational. Then, theres the Chaparral Car Museum for those racing fans. Also, a fabulous art museum that depicts life in the industry AND a gemstone museum. Great, great stop!!
