Ive always heard of the museum but never went until this past week, and I am so glad we did! It was a great museum with a ton of information, and I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of the gliders before even though I enjoy history. This museum was an excellent way to learn about these pilots and the risks they also took. There were very good videos on how the whole task was done from start to finish with the engine plane and the glider. It was fascinating how it was all engineered and accomplished. The 15 minute video in the theater was great, too! Regarding comments of it being overpriced, I dont quite get that. It was $18 for two of us for a ton of information and a well-done museum. The ticket also gets you into the Buddy Holly Museum for half price. The front desk was very nice as well. This museum is one I would highly recommend.

Covers the history of gliders in WW2. These were BIG gliders that carried heavy loads for delivery near the front. They were quiet and required only small fields for landing.

Small museum on the Second World War, but very nice on the subject covered! The gliders were not decisive in the hell of the fighting but the idea was very interesting. We were in Bastogne two months ago and the history of this town is closely linked with a glider carrying doctors while American troops were surrounded. In short, the Silent Wings Museum really has its place among the museums to see.

The guy at the front desk was very very rude. My dog is a REGISTERED service animal. He detects when my oxygen and glucose gets too low and he serves for PTSD as well. I did not have to tell this gentleman any of that but he proceeded to ask. He proceeded to tell me that if I try to pass my animal off as a service animal they could impose a $5000.00 fine Yada Yada. I have registration paperwork as I told him and I offered to show him and did show him. Hes registered for many other issues NOT just PTSD hes not an emotional support animal. Not that ANY of this information was his business. Needless to say he made me feel very unwelcome and I would never go back! What a waste of 20.00!

Why does a small city of a quarter million people, located in the middle of the West Texas desert, have an international airport? The answer is that the airport was built during World War II to train paratroopers and glider-borne troops. The city of Lubbock was chosen as a training site because it was located in a remote area with good weather conditions. The airport was later used to train troops for the Korean and Vietnam Wars, but it was eventually decommissioned after the Vietnam War. The city of Lubbock then took over the airport and converted it into a commercial airport.

Very interesting story here...I never knew the US Military had thousands of gliders they used to drop men and supplies behind enemy lines. Why didnt we learn this stuff in school, it would have been a more interesting story than what we were taught? Theres one fully restored glider on display in a custom built gallery plus lots of other interesting items. The front of the gliders lifted up allowing transportation of jeeps, bulldozers, and other equipment. We started the visit with a 16 minute film that told the story of these gliders. The museum is located at the old Lubbock Airport terminal. The museum addition includes an incredible glass wall overlooking the new terminal and the runway.

What an amazing place! Especially when paired with the WASP museum down in Sweetwater. I expect some of those ladies might have towed some of these mens gliders. And what a history! It takes a lot of guts to crash land behind enemy lines! And I love the story about how the program got approved with a little showmanship. Theres a longer video about how (if they werent totally destroyed by rommels asparagus) the gliders could be picked up again with a tow line thats worth sitting through. And make sure you find the theater down the first hall to your left - watch that first and the rest makes better sense. And if you go here first, theyll give you half off at the Buddy Holly Center with a receipt.

To start with, I will admit that I was disappointed there were not more aircraft. I love airplanes and was expecting more. HOWEVER, this museum did not end up disappointing. Speaking with the gentleman at the front desk gave a great insight to what ended up only being about 3 years of glider service and usage in the USAAF. Being able to actually feel the flimsiness of these extremely fragile aircraft gave a new appreciation to what was accomplished on far-flung theaters of operation from Burma to Sicily, Italy, and to the beaches of Normandy at and around D-Day. We were very impressed at the depth of the displays. Spent two hours here with two teenagers and our 10 year old grandson. None of us were bored and we didnt even read or see everything. There were even personal touches like displays with actual love letters written from husbands to wives during their long absences. Being right on the side of the flight line was another bonus as it allows you to see directly onto the runway where a few planes took off and landed during our museum visit. I would definitely recommend stopping here for a look into history. My hat is off to the soldiers and the pilots who were willing to get on these flying kites for one way trips to the front of the war.

So, I will admit, I was very skeptical of another Museum. Usually outdated, under funded and irrelevant. However this place was great. From the pristine attractions to the information provided. Will be back next time we are in Lubbock.

Amazing glider museum in our own back yard. People living in Lubbock dont realize this area was the premier glider training facility in World War 2. Lots of artifacts to see, and excellent explanations about all that happened here. Low admission prices as well.

Fantastic museum of our wwII glider pilots & their gliders, something that I had never heard of before discovering your info. Thank you for having this fantastic display available for the public & giving recognition to the Airmen in the Army Air Corp.

A lot packed into small area. Personally, I still think $15 is a bit pricey for 1 adult and 1 child, but it is what it is.
