Huge place and beautiful. There was no one at the station when we stopped by which is fine, but I do feel I would have enjoyed it more and wanted to explore further if we had a map or someone locals directions on the best parts to see. Also, not their fault at all, but maybe visiting when its not 115 degrees would be better.

Great area for birding! Have been here before. There are several well-maintained walking paths, with a few of them near the nature center for short distance walking. Nice bathing and feeding areas for the birds that attract a variety of species. Dont forget to look up! Many birds in the trees. In the spring and summer, go early in the morning to see a wide variety of bird species, and dont forget to spray with insect repellant before you go. Though there is a nature center, it has not been open when Ive visited, so I cant comment on that.

Would just like to offer a shout out to Georgie on staff at the NWR. He came to my rescue to today while I was walking a long trail in the refuge and kindly offered me a lift due to today s extreme heat warnings. He filled me in on all the wonderful facts about the refuge and made my visit fantastic! Very grateful for his assistance and knowledge. Thank you again, Georgie, and the refuge is lucky to have such a dedicated employee on their team!

What an incredible place to spend some time. It is peaceful, quiet and full of plants and wildlife. I have been here many times and it does not disappoint. We brought our bicycles to ride the trails. It was a great ride, however be aware of three things. One, you are near/on the Laguna Madre (water) so it can get very windy. On our ride back to the vehicle, the winds pushed against us and made for a tough, slow ride. Two, something we didnt think about was that when the sun goes down, it gets dark there. The parking lots have no lights so it made challenges when packing up. So be aware of your times when visiting. Third, there are no restrooms on the trails. Drain it before you head out!! A beautiful & well maintained park, that I highly recommend. Toilets: There is only one at the visitors center. Also, if you didnt bring water, this is the only place to fill up. Dog-friendliness: The trails are great for a dog walk. Just bring water for them and you. Picnic area: There are none here. There are some places to sit down. If you are going to eat here take your trash/garbage with you. The place free from garbage, please keep it this way.

We loved this Refuge and although we did not see any ocelots ourselves, we did chat with others who had seen one earlier in the day. The refuge does take a while to get to from civilization, but it is worth the drive. As others have stated, go slow, take your time, enjoy your time, and you will see wildlife. There are great bathrooms at the visitors center and the staff in the center is very knowledgeable.

In the winter season it is an excellent place to walk, we have already walked all the hiking trails, only the signs of the names of the paths where they intersect are a little confusing. We saw coyotes, deer, lizards, ocelots, armadillos and a variety of birds. I highly recommend it in the winter season. Also check the calendar because sometimes they close and other dates are exclusive to hunting.

This was such a great place to explore. The visitor center has an excellent path to a blind for bird watching. I appreciated all the signs that cautioned about encountering wildlife, so my companion and I walked only a very small part of the trails. We drove to the lookout over the lagoon and were not disappointed; it s quite beautiful, and there are many birds to see. Driving away slowly from the lookout, we saw an ocelot cross the road about 30 yards ahead of us. Go slowly, and you ll be amazed. Toilets: Clean restrooms are accessible, even on days when the visitor center is closed.

We came here for the wildlife and the fact that Ocelots are in the area. We saw all the lovely birds. We also kind of won the lottery and spotted two Ocelots as we entered the Refuge. We were going extremely slow as we were scanning the area mostly for birds, then a momma Ocelot ran across the road quickly. We pulled over and watched it with a 400mm lens as it sat in the bush. We got lucky as it turned back and walked back across the road to grab a kitten! Then they both made there way quickly across the road. It happened fast so we were only able to get blury photos from far away. Keep your camera ready and go slow. You may get lucky. We hope you do. We also hope they lower the night speed limits on the busy roads outside the Refuge to give the Ocelots a fighting chance.

Im so glad that we made a detour to go to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. I am from Colorado so I have never seen an alligator and that was a hope for my trip. But I also love birds and there are millions of birds in the area and it is quite the sight. Its funny because my daughter was disappointed at first she said, I thought we were going to a zoo! So we had to explain to her what a wildlife refuge lol. At the first stop, called Osprey Overlook, there were a ton of ospreys just like the sign promised haha. And then we went to another overlook where we saw seagulls dive bombing for fish which was really cool because I have only seen that on TV. And we were pretty sure we saw some alligators but at that distance it was hard to confirm. It was almost a magical moment though for me. I love connecting with nature and I felt so connected in that moment and that place. I would love to frequent it if I lived closer. Then we moved on to an area called Alligator Pond. I love getting short nature videos so I was trying to get a nice 30 second clip of the area. Unfortunately it took a long time because some people came and they were chit-chatting so all of the birds were quieter and obviously I dont want people talking in my video so we had to wait patiently for them to move along. Thankfully we did though because after they left and I managed to get my 30 second video I was ready to leave content with what I had got and my daughter was like what about the alligators? And I looked to my left and there was one right there! It was fun getting to see it so up close. Beforehand I thought that it was going to be scary because that is an apex predator, however the park is designed in such a way that you can have a safe overlook on a boardwalk so if you want to escape you have plenty of time before the alligator is able to get to where you are at. So it was a lot safer than I imagined before I came. It was really spectacular to experience that though and I definitely recommend a trip to Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge if you are in the area. And my daughter ended up loving the experience and she didnt want to leave even though it wasnt a zoo and she was initially disappointed haha.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet. Nature trails are flat so its an easy bike ride Husband and I hadnt been on a bike since we were kids. We encouraged our youngest daughter to come and enjoy natures beauty

This looks like a beautiful place, but its always closed, both the trails and the visitor center! They close the refuge for hunting several times per year, which Ive never understood. How can you call a place a refuge, then kill the animals who come there to live safely?

I wish they opened more of the refuge up. Not all trails are open and driving loops arent all open. Pre-Covid, this refuge was outstanding and must stop for any out of town birder or nature enthusiast.

Unfortunately the visitors center was closed for covid. Lots of paved paths around the center with a couple bird feeding stations and a bird blind. While the center isnt open they do have Porta potty. I drove lake road to its terminus. Just as the road ends on the left is a gated road. I walked it a quarter mile to Alligator Pond. Sure enough there was a rather beefy Alligator laying on the pond bank. There is a walkway and viewing platform above the water. There are many other trails to explore that I didnt experience.

First of all I want to say I enjoyed this refuge and it has Real value. Problems arise whe. You ad in 2.5 miles of rumble straps and speed bumps and a 25 mph speed limit b4 you even get into the refuge and closing a drivable 15 mile senic road to cars. Whi h I might add was what it was built for. Not bikes not walking. Cars. The national seashore at padre island has a higher speed limit and no speed bumps etc. Sorry ranting...management of some of these refuges annoy me.

I love this park but there isnt much information about the trails if they are safe during hunting season. Only there isnt much info as well, they all specify sectors in which they are not physically marked at the park.

Laguna Atascosa is a unique and amazing place, home to many threatened and endangered species. This is a great place to bird, hike, and see alligators. But the visitors center is closed due to covid, which is understandable. However, the current management has ended Lagunas tour programs. The buses and trams were sold without the public being made aware of anything. And they have no intention of bringing the tours back. This is a great disservice to the community and visitors that want to experience, Laguna from trained rangers and volunteers. Without that human connection its difficult to understand how important laguna is for the endangered ocelot and other animals that call it home. Let the management know that taking aware visitors service programs is not good for the community.
