Found my own probono lawyer on Reddit butshe said I had to go through HVL for her services. Despite yhe initial good vibes. Eventuallyconflicting opinion and communication issues were evident. HVL, Angeleese claimed I needed to basically be grateful for free help and that I was unable to receive a new attorney bc it was free and most dont recieve help. What does that have to do with me reapplying? The passive aggressive energy is wild and these ppl pick and choose who they want to help. Not fornthe greater good.

Called to set up the meeting but never bothered to call me during the hours they agreed to. I called the office the next day and was told they are still making calls give it another 24hr gave it 24hrs. Never got another call. The example of lawyers that don t care about anyone. Lawyers should want to help and make a difference instead you get nothing from this law firm. DON T WASTE YOUR TIME

I simply don t understand an organization that never answers their phone within the business hours stated on the website. Please someone explain it? Failing to follow up; in the interest of the agreed process. In conclusion, if this organization cannot operate within the terms of their own bylaws of the people, I think it s fair to say from previous reviews this organization needs to be defunded and closed. Due to this point it s just wasting the people s time and taxpayers money.

I was called on the phone and told that lawyer was going to contact me on May 1, 2024 still to this day. No law you have reached out to me at all. I also sent you all an email informing you all that no one contacted me on the Monday after the first, and still, no one have reached out to me in reference to this matter. Obviously, my legal needs are no importance to you all And I find it be so mean and unprofessional.

It s always the establishments that are supposed to be assisting the less fortunate that drop the ball the most, and it s truly unfortunate for individuals who have no other options; which is why they usually do what they do anyways as far as dropping the ball goes. Trying to seek assistance from this establishment is added stress on top of what the potential client may already be experiencing. I have experienced unethical, condescending, and incompetent Individuals who are employed at this office. The majority lawyers are dishonest, and state that they have called individuals when in fact, they only let the phone ring once so that the person does not have enough time to answer and don t leave a message, Or they just don t call at all. All I have to say for all individuals who work here that are moving in an unethical manner, is that no one EVER escapes KARMA remember that when you don t know why situations in your life are not going as planned! To the representatives that are truly trying to do their jobs; may blessings be upon you.

IF a you can even get through as it always goes to VM, I finally did to ask a simple question about retrieving a copy of an old will THEY did and the lady (used term generously) was rude, didn t even listen to the question and kept saying she couldn t answer anything .i then asked to speak to someone else and she laughed, I asked to speak to a manager and she chuckled again and rudely said for what when I told her it was rude to laugh and how they are non profit working for the public and laughing she denied doing so I told her I had it recorded .she THEN asked again what I wanted a manger for &said If you don t lowered your tone I m hanging up the phone I was NOT talking loud at all, I feel she used this as a leg to stand on as I had asked for a manager, so I SOFTLY said your attitude and she hung up. I called back and she repeatedly hung up until she finally answered and took my name for her manager Mrs Calderon to call me back, she was trying her best to sound professional as I told her I had it all recorded. Hours later her manager called with an attitude in her voice from the start, she said Laura was instructed to say they dont answer legal questions, I told her that s not how it went and she said she s not wasting her time going back and forth, she ranted about her rude staff as she was rude herself one can see monkey see monkey do must be their motto, I stopped her and said can I even say why I called and she finally paused. In the middle of my question she interrupted, didn t let me finish and then said again she wasn t going to discuss her rude coffee girls he said she said, I told her we are discussing my question and she hung up the staff are totally unprofessional, rude and condescending these Hell s Kitchen cholas had to have been hired by some out of the hood program HVL has in conjunction with the city jail ..it might as well be Fidel Castros Communist Cuba the way they make up stories to defend/justify how they talk to people, hang up on people and more while their pay comes from where again for this non profit funded organization? Absolutely disgusting

To help avoid feeling like an idiot after applying, please note... That unless youre broker than 2,400 a month will you even be considered for any pro-bono assistance. All pro-bono cases must be very simple cases, nothing difficult in any way, and only 10% of those are even taken on to help volunteer lawyers avoid losing money with their time. Thats exactly what I was told by Deon Hunter who basically made me feel like a total idiot for seeking legal advice by the time the call was over and made it clear that my case was too complex, that all Im going to do is get different oppions from different lawyers, and even though Im a 100% disabled Veteran only a Veteran counselor would, possibly call me for a short legal advice. At least I was afforded a possible opportunity to get some direction on my legal situation. So, I personally wouldnt waste my time here as he basically put it to me. Just find a lawyer you can pay who can possibly help.

The Intake Person For The Houston Texas Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers At The Veteran Michael E Debakey VA Clinic Named Gabrielle Was Making Me Fill That She Was Rushed & Had No Time To Go Over What I Needed To Ask Her After I Called Back From Her Voice-mail She Left Me, When I Asked About How Would My Dad Go About Filling Out His Paperwork For His End Of Life Preparation If He Has A Veterans Health Care Life Insurance Policy, She Told Me That He Could Go To Michael E. Debakey VA Clinic Of Veterans Affairs That They Have A Free Time To Meet With Veterans With Their Legal Team, Between 1-3 pm On Fridays, The Big Issue Is That My Disabled Veteran Dad Is 90 Years Old & Doesnt Know How To Fill Out This Kind Of Paperwork, She Didnt Seem To Care About Talking With Me About These Issues Over The Phone In Fact She Got Really Snippy With Me Saying Only My Dad Can Talk With The Volunteer Lawyer That I Cant Help My Dad By Telling The Lawyer What My Dad Wants To Do With His Paperwork, That Its Against The Law For Me To Be In The Same Room With My Dad & The Lawyer, Gabrielle Was Very Agressive Verbally Like She Was Talking To A Little Kid Belittling Me Over The Phone & Was Brushing Me Off Like Shes In A Big Hurry & Cant Answer These Simple Questions That I Asked Her About, Im Only Giving Her 3 Stars Just Because Im A Nice Person !

This experience was terrible. To reach out to an organization meant to help and be belittled and accused of being hostile for asking questions is absurd. My application was refused by management and I would not suggest this non profit because they are not in the business of helping people obviously just to receive state funds. Also was not allowed to place a complaint. Absolutely a nightmare

Visited the site, got approved and and was notified when I had a telephone conference with an attorney. It was supposed to be between 2:00pm and 5:00 pm. I began my wait at 2:00 o clock and waited up to 5:00 o clock. Received a reminder earlier but during the time for the appointment NO ONE called or texted that I was rescheduled. I really needed their assistance and got nothing. The last experience I encountered with Volunteer Lawyers on this same issue is that after posting this review, a lawyer or an attorney [the two are different], not sure which, called, left a message saying it was in response to my request for legal advice. This professional did not leave a valid phone number to return the call, and redialing the same number I got no answer nor did the recording revealed whose number it was. I even sent a text message to the number.That individual never called back. I did received an email with 2-3 law firm names interested in my case. I reached out to one of the firm, spoke with someone, I do not believe it was a lawyer. Since I only had a few supposedly free minutes to discuss my legal issue, right away I asked for a legal term to be defined. The person instead proceeded to tell me that the Firm would work up a document explaining their legal fees and obligations. When I received it I was to sign it and send it back. I suppose then maybe I would have been invited for a face-to-face paid consultation. I did Google these firms to look at the lawyers education, bar certification, years of practice, etc. The profiles were revealing. In conclusion, my personal experience lead me to the opinion that perhaps most of the legal professionals who volunteer their time to this organization want to do a good public service. I was not fortunate enough to connect with one of these. However, it also seems that there are some who only use this affiliation as a good way to find paying clients and to strengthen their legal profile.

I believe it is just a make up to shine up Houston lawyers gray features. They will not help and they will not get involved unless there is a possible, quick and foreseeable settlement needs to be signed so that they can have a share. I called and answered the many questions, and at the end no one is willing to listen, forget about understanding. They are just worst than the court appointed lawyers. Save your time and seek God´s help and other source´s help.

Houston volunteer lawyers dont handle lawsuits. But Im praying they handle out of state summonses, traffic violations, old tickets , especially regarding minor bench warrants for decade old tickets. As well as help with divorce decrees & district court preparation. They sent me a application. They are one of the only & best options available.

I was referred to these people and I am highly disappointed. I went thru the steps, got approved for services, received my first call with a attorney only to be told that my case for guardianship is to hard for them and their attorney s would not pick up the case. This lady to me Just go file child support . She was nice nasty and spoke to me as if I was beneath her. I am very surprised at the way this was handled. I actually got approved for service and during that process my needs were explained only to be told 2 weeks later by a attorney my case is to hard.

Did not provide any useful information and one of the lawyers got irritated with me. All I asked was how do I go about filling a law suit on a X co-worker. He immediately started grilling me about what kind of relationship that we have. Then asking me am I trying to sue them to get back at them. That to me did not help me. The comments and the tactics taken, actually was very discouraging. Considering I am a mature individual I will not name the lawyer that I did talk with. Just know that any representative of any firm, can taint the image through their individual actions.

I was referred to these people from another party. And was extremely disappointed with the lack of concern and indifference about the reason I needed their assistance. The person I spoke with wasnt even trying to listen to why I called. They were rude, unprofessional & dismissive. I was met with utter disrespect. And the manner in which I was treated prompted me to write this review. Ive also called and let the people that referred me in the first place know, why I believe they shouldnt be referring others to Houston Volunteer Lawyers for assistance in the future. Do better HVL it is your job, and there are people out there that dearly need assistance.

The person that answered the phone was very unprofessional, very rude and dismissive. He immediately told me that they didn t help with that before I could even explain to them what I was needing help for, or the reason I was calling. The person that answered the phone didn t even describe what it is that they actually do help with or attempt to refer me to someone that could, although I do understand it is volunteer work, I would expect there to be some level of professionalism, especially being that you are receiving donations/funding to aide in legal advice,I would not recommend.

Question I am sick with my lungs I am of legal age I do not work because of my lung condition I have Bronchitis and I get sick when I do that I never last anywhere And I want to know if a lawyer can help me with my condition so that I can have a visa To go to Mexico, go to the doctor because it is very expensive here and I dont have insurance. Spent a couple of days trying to reach someone for an appointment due to time restrictions. FINALLY received an appointment between 3 and 5pm on Friday 13th. They called at 3:27, it rang ONE time and hung up. They didnt even bother to leave a voicemail. I waited until 5pm just to be sure that the private number was in fact them. No one ever called back. I was devastated! Still waiting for help abd advise. No one can answer the ONE question I have without giving me a labrynth to complete before getting any sort of advise. I would think if there were any issues with the call dropping they wouldve called back. Covid is making it even harder to get a person.....Ive tried calling and pressing every option. They just take you through a bunch of menus and then repeat the original one. It gave me a literal panic attack just trying to not go crazy.

I call the man asked me to explain my situation to him and then tell me that they dont give advice over the phone that I would have to come in to one of their free advice seminars or something so I asked why did he ask me to explain my situation if he wasnt going to be able to give me advice because I dont live in the city and then the guy says you started talking and I didnt want to interruptt me thats is why yall are going to continue to be Houston volunteer they sound like a scam like on the internet when they ask you for do you want a vice but then try to charge you for it and thats what it sound like they do and Im good
