Was a great place to visit and walk for 2 hours. Went around and saw the history of embalming from the early years. You see exhibits of presidents and the pope. Also a good section of movie and famous people. At the end you can purchase a death certificate at the gift shop.

When I came in with my brother the older black lady was very rude, she didnt want me to use my tap to pay which they did offer. She huffed and puffed and said do u have a card? and I said no Im using tap to pay twice and she was mad that she had to get up from her chair to get the tap machine I guess and just had a bad attitude when we walked in. She really hates her job and needs a new one or needs to retire. The museum itself was very informative and tasteful. I took lots of great pictures and learned new things. Highly recommend going, its only 15 bucks per person, but the old black lady is mad if u want to buy anything or ask her something, its almost as if u interrupted her in her own home behind the counter except shes at work. What a joke.

I would have left 5 stars if the woman at the counter of the gift shop had not been so terribly rude. She huffed and puffed about my looking around and purchasing 29 dollars in items. I even asked her at one point if shed rather I not buy anything, she was so rude. She did not respond to that. Hire people who actually want to work and not mean old women who dont want you buying anything. She acted like I really was putting her out!

The museum was interesting. The staff was rude. The lady at the counter did not want to be there. She was extremely short when I mentioned we had bought tickets online. She made my boyfriend wait before letting him re-enter the museum from using the bathroom. I would understand if she had been helping someone, but she had not been.

On my first visit, I only got to see a large part of it, mostly because of all the reading. On my second visit, I got to see much more. Though I felt that that I didnt see every exhibit they held. It may sound depressing, but it is actually quite interesting. You learn about different things, and it shows that just as we appreciate life, we also appreciate death in equal measure.

It was a truly remarkable tour. I found the sections on the presidency and the papacy to be particularly captivating. Overall, it is an excellent museum, and we were able to complete our visit in approximately two hours.

Could definitely use some personality and kindness! The lady was rude and weird just necessary rude!! Well on the other hand she could just fit the atmosphere of a death museum. However, working with the public should have some sort of smiles and kindness as well!

I found this place fascinating. It wasnt morbid, or creepy, or dark. Theres a nice section on President Funerals. Some items are authentic, while others are nicely done copies. Theres also sections on the Popes, celebrities, and Jesus. Everything you ever wanted to know about embalming, hearses from the mid-1800 to current, hearses for the famous. The customs for mourning from the 19th century and other countries. If you like quirky or unusual, and like History, this is the place to visit! Took us just under two hours to see it all. A wheelchair could easily go through the museum. Probably not a place to bring younger children. Not because of the subject, but because there is a lot of No Touching. There is a gift shop. The prices are pretty much in line with any other gift shop (ie: tshirts were $20. A shotglass was $7)

Really interesting history about coffins and different burial practices There are hearses everywhere and it was cool and honestly I would come back but the only reason why I m giving it 4 stars cause the lady working the desk was pretty rude the whole time we were there. I bought a mug and told her I wanted a bag (I had a backpack but knowing me I would pull out a coat that s in it and shatter the mug) and she asked me rudely if I wanted a bag. My friend who I was with reminded me I wanted an orison wells death certificate copy (they re only a dollar) for a signing my shop is doing next week (I work a comic shop and someone who wrote a war of the worlds inspired comic is coming next week so I was wanting him to sign it as a funny thing) and she said we don t have that one and I said oh but you have it in the book back there and she said no we don t have any copies and I was like oh okay that s fine sorry and walked away. I d come back for the museum but the customer service wasn t great

This museum is awesome, we had the best morning here. Rob, our volunteer tour guide was awesome and peppered our experience with interesting information and anecdotes. He says he is only there on Thursdays, so try to schedule a trip then! The theological context is interesting in the Catholic section of the museum, but it would be exciting to expand the collection to include non-Eurocentric or non-Christian approaches to death. Would also really benefit from more information on more alternative approaches to end of life processes. The work of Caitlin Doughty would be an example. We had a great time and would highly recommend you to anyone visiting Houston.

Death is something Ive never been afraid of, and I dont view it as macabre. Still, I didnt really know what to expect when we arrived at the National Funeral Museum. It was tastefully and respectfully done. Yes, a few things were a little off-putting, like the old embalming machine and replica crematorium chamber, but mostly the museum paid tribute to many celebrities and historical figures as well as death traditions and customs. Some of it made me melancholy, but only briefly. Mostly it was interesting and I learned a lot. I would definitely recommend for history and museum buffs and folks who like to go off the beaten path for activities.

It was very well maintained, clean, and well lit. Its not dark or creepy at all. A docent, Robert, gave us a tour and so much information above what is displayed on signs. The museum holds some very beautiful hearses... including the one that carried Presidents Reagan and Ford, and another that carried Princess Grace. There are very few barriers and you can walk around and view things up close. Both my husband and I really enjoyed the museum and recommend a visit.

Very interesting place. We were in Houston for a day before a cruise out of Galveston. My friends were skeptical but agreed to come. We pulled into the parking lot in almost didnt go in. It is in a sketchy neighborhood with very secure fencing around the parking lot. There are signs in the parking lot saying They are not responsible for personal vehicles. However when I walked in there was a security guard who sits in front of cameras monitoring the parking lot. I do have to say the security guard did not have much of a personality however. The only other employee we found was the woman at the cash register, slow was an understatement. I also was concerned about accessibility for a wheelchair. That was no problem either. We ended up spending over 2 hours here. Grab a scavenger hunt when you walk in, makes it even more interesting looking for the answers. Many different rooms for different interests. A room with celebrities, the Pope. Presidents. Interesting customized caskets. I love their slogan any day above ground is a good one.

If I could leave 0 stars I would. On November 18 the closing time said 5pm and we arrived 4:20pm. Front doors where closed with the sign saying open. We called and the lady reiterated we close at 5 and we told her its 4:20. She said there should be someone up front, maybe you in wrong entrance. We went to all the front entrances, no one in sight. We called again, and she hesitated to confirm address which we dint understand why her attitude. We were in the right address and we even went to the back doors because she kept saying it should be open. This lady never called front desk, never went to check. Whats the point of 5pm closing when u already closed at 4:20? Whats the point of picking up the phone if we telling u the sign says open, we on time and u cant resolve anything exept say it should be open and someone should be up front. There were people inside because there were cars. I bet they could see us thru the cameras going thru all the doors trying to figure out what was going on. Bad customer service, bad closing time stated if they just gonna close whenever. People do travel for this and we got the 3pm traffic to get there to be told someone should be there n left us waiting. Get your act together and communicate with other staff if you gonna close before stated time.

From Egyptian tombs, embalming, cremation, Japanese funerals, Dia de Los Muertos and presidential funerals - anything remotely involving the funeral process is under this roof. We enjoyed the interactive display in the famous icon exhibits, including memorial service brochures from celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Jim Henson and Kobe Bryant. The scavenger hunt is fun, not just for kids. I was especially impressed by the shroud exhibit and learned so many things, while simultaneously questioning even more. This was super interesting and I loved reading everything about the history of objects and funerals. Even though I am not catholic or even Christian I found the history of the Popes funerals extremely interesting and I also really enjoyed the different burials and Funeral histories. Definitely recommend!

Loved it. Who would have thought a morbid subject could produce an interesting museum? The funeral carriages from the pre automobile era and the early hearses have amazing workmanship.

Amazing museum, the highlight of our Houston trip! The Papal Exhibit could be its own museum. It had so much detail and some cool artifacts and replicas. If you like reading things at museums, allot at least 2 hours, maybe 3.

The National Museum of Funeral History is absolutely one of the finest museums in the country. It is so well done and just so interesting. I could stay there for hours just taking it all in. There are new exhibits every year. It is an awesome field trip. You will enjoy it immensely if you go, or be very sorry if you don t.

This is a very interesting experience and unlike all other museums. It has several themes related to funerals and death. Vehicles carrying the dead. Coffins. Burial rituals of various cultures. Presidential burials. Burial, cremation, post mortem photography and there advancement over time. Also covers significant figures in pop culture that died. Its a bit out of the way but definitely worth a visit. Expect to spend at least 3 hours.

A quite interesting museum: From post-mortem photographs to personal items of historical figures. The entrance costs $15 usd and the only thing is that they do not accept cash payment. Excellent collection

The museum itself is good but can be a little disturbing for some people because of its thematic.

The museum was interesting and we learned a lot. There was a fun scavenger hunt for those who would like to participate as well. It covered a wide range of topics and it was a good outing for a rainy day. We spent about an hour inside but you could easily spend longer
