The food and drinks were great and our waiter did their best. The reason they lost 3 stars is due to their new QR code only menu. 1. Online only menus are discriminatory against anyone who is neurodivergent, has diminished vision capabilities, and/or are elderly and has trouble reading and retaining from screens. My waiter had to assist a very anxious me as I retain information spatially (photographic memory with spatial triggers) due to my ADHD, Dyslexia, and cPTSD. When all you can do is scroll, there s no ability for spatial retention, so I could remember that that there are two drinks I liked, but I could never find where they were to remember their names and I began to anxiously scroll up and down. It really triggered my anxiety, which killed the experience from the beginning 2. QR codes completely kill the ambience as well. We ve come to a gorgeous dining experience that you can tell was painstakingly decorated to provide the perfect experience and the first thing we re encouraged to do is take out our phones and start staring at a screen. Now our phones are out and we see that notification come through when we start scrolling on social media instead of engaging one on one with the person or people we ve come to enjoy. 3. There have been numerous studies done where they consistently find the same results, which are that more than 70% of diners do not like QR code menus and feel they cheapen the experience, so why is an elevated establishment such as Permission now switching over to such a low rent menu form? 4. With so many QR code scams out there and scammers becoming so incredibly sophisticated and are so easily able to realistically re-create a company s QR code, whether it be a piece of paper or an acrylic, people will no longer scan QR codes. I ve been to Permission so many times as it was my preferred cocktail spot. This was the first time I d ever been given only the QR code menu option and was told they are no longer offering physical menus. Covid is over. The people have spoken. We want tangible, physical menus.

Excellent date night place if you come early enough. It does get crowded, but its not super loud. My only complaint is serving ceviche with essentially ruffles potato chips (just less salty) ruined the ceviche. But the smoky old fashioned was 1 of the best Ive had in the city so far!

UPDATE: Was in Houston again last weekend and dropped in at Permission on both Friday and Saturday nights. Although we missed Peter, Shanell and Tommy were there and showed us another great night. Permission does it right! Their service is top notch. In addition to Old Fashioneds, we had Carajillos this time instead of Espresso Martinis and the Carajillos were excellent! Since Peter was not there, I did not smoke a cigar this time. Hopefully, he is there next time and can spare an hour for a good smoke! ORIGINAL POST: Was in Houston for the weekend and had a GREAT time at Permission Whiskey last night! Peter (the owner), Shanell, Jacob, Andrew, and Tommy were all fantastic. While it was 7:30-8:00 on a Saturday night and we did not have reservations, we were able to get an outside table for three as soon as we walked in. This was perfect, as I was going to be smoking a cigar or two. While the drinks (old-fashioned, espresso martini, and bourbon, espresso martini) were excellent and the selection of spirits was very impressive, the friendly, customer service was exceptional and really made our night!! We also tried a charcuterie board which was excellent! One of the highlights of the night was drinking Van Winkle and an extremely rare blend of Glenmorangie scotch! Peter, you and your staff have a gem in the Heights!! Permission will be our go to every time we are in Houston (see you in 3-4 weeks)! We will definitely try your new jazz bar next time as well! Went to Permissions for a small birthday celebration, the atmosphere was great and the music was spot on. It gets pretty packed if you come around 9pm like we did but thankfully we reserved a table which I highly recommend you doing. The drinks where amazing and strong which I liked lol my favorite was the smoke old fashion which by far was the best one I ever had. I was trying my hardest to see the speak easy to put the cherry on top for the birthday celebration which was my idea to come but I failed to talk to the right people in time. Overall we all had a great time and will for sure go back , hopefully I can get in the speak easy this time around lol but really go and enjoy Permissions you will not regret your time there. Parking: Parking infront of Permissions is limited, they have a parking lot to the left which is free and another one 2 bars down to the right which is paid parking but was only $12 dollars I believe using a QRC as soon as you pull up to the gate so you can put your license information.

Permission is my favourite bar in Houston. The atmosphere was incredible - the perfect blend of vibrant and intimate. I made reservations for last Friday at 7:30 PM to celebrate my boyfriends birthday. We decided to do date night, and we decid3d to try a different part of town and picked this bar. When we first arrived, we were notified that a private party was there and they would be leaving soon. The music was very loud, but despite that we decided to stay. We had good service until my bf ordered a drink, and our waitress decided she would just leave us hanging and went to take care of a larger party. She never came back to our table. After 30 mins I got the attention of another staff member and he took care of us. I understand that service is shared amongst employees. What I dont understand is that you kept passing by our table and ignored us for the rest of the night, after you already had serviced us 3 drinks. After driving all the way from Pearland, I dont think we will be back. Service needs to be equal. Just because it was just us two doesnt give you the right to leave us hanging. I guess she wanted to take care of the larger group for better tips. The waitress name is Veronica.

Came in about 7 on a Saturday and the place was absolutely wrecked. About as bad as service can possibly get, which I understand there was something off on that night based on all the good reviews about that. The drinks we were able to order were good, the Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini were well made, nothing memorable, but definitely quality drinks. Unfortunately, could not explore this amazing selection of whiskeys theyre supposed to have because the staff was still tending to a private party that had ended an hour prior. Super loud DJ playing EDM cover music didnt match the vibe you would expect.

Great service. Nice ambiance. EXTENSIVE selection of whiskeys. This is definitely a whiskey bar. I think I noticed more bourbon than any other type of whiskey. Would definitely come back. Ordered the barrel aged Old Fashioned. It was very alcohol forward (as old fashioneds are), but had lovely spice notes. Parking: A few parking spots in front. Not sure where to park after those are full as I got there before the crowd.

My friends and I have enjoyed visited Permission often, but most recently we had the pleasure of experiencing their hidden speakeasy James. The lighting is dark and sexy. Its perfect for a date or gathering with friends. We were greeted with a delicious welcome shot. I then tried the Midnight Martini. It came with some lovely chocolates. It was one of the best drinks Ive had in Houston. I also enjoyed the espresso martini. I look forward to coming back on special occasions. :-)

I was shocked my single drink was $64. A good friend of mine recommended to me and said it was a great place to try various whiskeys. Im trying to branch out. First of all, the atmosphere was great and our server with the tied hair was great too. I asked the bartender for a bourbon recommendation. I mentioned Woodford as my friend recommended I try it. I glanced through the menu. He brings out one bottle. It said Woodford, so I assumed it was the standard one I was told about. I look through the menu again later, thinking of what to get next, and I see there are some high-end options. I didnt see the one the bartender served me. I was shocked it came out to $64 for a single glass. I asked for a recommendation, expecting something standard. I guess I know for next time, but the guy should have given me more info. They have a wide selection, but be careful of them trying to push something not on the menu. I was kinda excited to try this place out all week, but I just feel scammed in the end.

I rarely leave reviews. However, after being here several times over the years, the last experience was sour enough that a review was necessary. Dont come here and order food. Thats the bottom line. The cocktails are great. The bartenders are great. Their kitchen is abysmal. How it takes over 40 minutes for olives and (stale) toast (which came out after our crab ceviche, which was batched and took 30 minutes) is beyond me. First visit on Friday 5pm. Nicely decorated. Parking is a challenge. There is paid parking( 2hrs $7, 3hrs. $9) and street parking. Adequate seating, several tables reserved. To reserve, use IG to reserve a table or booth. Happy Hour 4p-6p. 5-7 was a busy crowd. Enjoyed the atmosphere. It also cooled outside seating. Drinks were excellent. This place is jaw dropping stunning! It felt like walking into a luxurious golden suite. The staff was so attentive. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a hospitable woman. We decided to sit at the bar since we were only having drinks. I ordered the Permission Gin & Tonic, and I was blown away. This was the best G&T I ve ever had! This is a neat bar space with some decent cocktails. We sat outside and it ended up raining but I think I would go back and sit inside. They also allow people to smoke cigars anywhere outside so it was very frustrating to have smoke blown into our faces while we were trying to enjoy our cocktails. Inside the establishment is definitely where the entertainment is at and the vibe inside feels more like a spacious speakeasy. I think you d probably have a better overall experience there with more attentive service from the bartenders/staff too.

Such great staff! Our vehicle needed to be towed from the parking lot but was blocked in. The doorman and the owner got involved in helping us locate the driver. Very professional and helpful! Also a great vibe and exceptional atmosphere in the bar.

My favorite spot in the Heights Area! If your a bourbon person it s a must visit! This place is everything that is five stars. Excellent service & phenomenal atmosphere. Incredible spirits selection, specifically whiskey. They also make phenomenal cocktails. Bar staff is great. Perfect spot for a date or night out with friends. I ll definitely be back soon.

First time Friday night and sat at the bar. Cozy decor, colors, and service was great. The range/amount of whisky/scotch is amazing even compared to whisky cake and Brice was great behind the counter with service and his suggestions. Food /snacks were also good. Will for sure be coming back!!! Have a whole list of scotch/bourbon, whisky to try now ;).

UPDATE 3/24/23 I decided to update my 4 star review to a 5 star review after my night out at Permission tonight. I see the hard work Tommy (Reservation person) has to put in to make sure everyone is comfortable and their experience there is phenomenal. Hands down this is our favorite bar! The vibe is so chill but yet so happening. I didn t get the manger s name tonight but she s absolutely amazing and I absolutely loooved her glasses :-) she treats everyone like they re the most important person there! Yeah we did a lot of people watching. However, go! Make your reservations online and have a great time!! It s so worth it. Original Review below I wish google allowed 1/2 stars because I d definitely give this place 4.5 stars as it is fabulous! The one thing I don t like is the way they book reservations only through Instagram. It s so not efficient since it takes them so long to answer you back or confirm. However, the drinks are AMAZING! The atmosphere is AMAZING! The service is AMAZING! It s sooooo cute in this bar with AMAZING music!! This is probably one of my favorite spots. We definitely highly recommend this place and will be back!!

My favorite place to be other than my own home!!! The bartenders and staff are such a special group of people and they make every customer feel personally welcome and taken care of. Quite literally the best service in the biz. The atmosphere is absolutely killer, and the drinks are even better. Ive been spoiled because now I cant go anywhere else without being disappointed. As a regular patron at Permission, I can truly say that the staff, service and quality of the drinks never cease to amaze me. Its a very welcoming environment with a beautiful ambiance and even better drinks! You truly need to check it out if you havent already done so. I highly recommend making reservations online for their busier nights, just as an extra precaution in the event that its booked to capacity. Great spot. Came in solo for the 1st time early Friday night. They were already pretty busy , so I would definitely recommend either trying to make a reservation or getting here early. Had a seat at the bar. Norma was a fantastic bartender! Super friendly, great conversation, and very knowledgeable. Their staff seem to work very well together. Will definitely be coming back.
