What I thought was going to be a small museum turned out to be spread over 5 buildings. I managed to visit 3 of the buildings. I particularly enjoyed the Native exhibitions and the American painters because it was all new to me. I think there is something for everyone, from American and Native art to South American exhibits and even ancient and medieval European exhibits. I dont know if I may have missed it, but Im only suggestion would be to add an audio guided tour as you walk through the exhibits. Definitely check out the museum of fine arts if in Houston.

If you d like to see African American art or even art with African Americans, don t waste your money here and come on a free day to see for yourself. We re not depicted anywhere in any art. Jesus is painted as white over and over and it s like most spaces where there s no representation EXCEPT for the Indians who already received their life long generational reparations. We left with the quickness. The two stars are for the friendly staff who had no say about which art was considered fine art . I personally didn t like any of it. Once was enough.

Why I post photos and videos of my visits to Museums, like here, and on YouTube, is to raise awareness of the fact that many cultural items have been looted like I have here on the page of the MFAH. One instance of looting is one too many, and I firmly believe objects that have been looted should be repatriated! I just read in the news that the Field is repatriating works that are subject to NAGPRA for example. I wanted to ask what steps the MFAH is taking to repatriate cultural items that are looted? Sadly, looting is an issue many Museums are involved with.

If you are an art fan you will probably like this place otherwise I doubt you will love it, the ideal time to visit it is during the week you dont really need much time to visit it, the special attractions you can usually enter only for 1 min per which seems a little disappointing to me, in general terms it is beautiful, well maintained and takes you out of the routine

Excellent museum, there is never enough time to see it, first-class service, air-conditioned and always clean, high-quality exhibits that take you in a pleasant way through eras and artists, competing with museums of high level in my opinion, I really appreciate the management of information in English and Spanish. Safety pin! If you visit Houston.

World class museum in Houston. The permanent collection is excellent with a good variety of modern art. Temporary exhibits are great as the museum gets hold of some of the best global Art. One of the current exhibitions-Meiji Modern- is truly inspiring. A great collection of paintings, ceramics and furniture that showcase a Great period of Japanese art. We come back every couple months to check new exhibitions. Convenient on site parking.

I budgeted two hours to spend at this museum and we ended up spending five and still didn t see everything. What a vast and diverse collection of art spanning different centuries and continents. Very impressive impressionist, post-impressionist, expressionist and contemporary collection of paintings housing painters such as Van Gogh, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O Keefe, De Kooning, Picasso, Matisse, just to name a few. We would have loved to see more East Asian art but the special exhibition on Meiji Japan was intriguing. The staff were all so welcoming and friendly, particularly Michael B, the security guard in the Beck Building. He was just wonderful and helpful. The love and pride he takes in his job and his passion for art really shows. What a beautiful way to spend our whole say. We will be back the next time we are in Houston.

Yes it s free on Thursday, but if you re not available on Thursday it s still worth buying the ticket and checking out. They have 3 huge buildings of art for you too see great for kids or even a little date night ! 100 percent would recommend

One of my favorite museums so far! To begin with Thursdays are free from 11am to 9pm for the permanent collection, starting on the base floor with an astonishing optical illusion collection from different artists, definitely you shouldnt miss the Yayoi Kusama infinity room they have. From there you have 2 more floors to go full of Amazon pieces that present artists from all around the world, it would be a hard choice to pick a favorite. I didnt get to see all the collection in one run, if you take your time on each room, check out all the pieces, videos and descriptions might take more than 1 day visit unless you arrive early and leave till your finished, I was there for a good 4 hrs and didnt get to finish the first building, it was until later that I realized it is split in 3 buildings connected through an underground tunnel also filled with art pieces. They also have the Leonelli cafe with great coffee and breakfast, theres a nice restaurant if youre feeling hungry I didnt eat there but the decor is beautiful. Im definitely going back to finish.

Had a day in Houston, and we decided to check out the MFA Houston. I am so glad we chose to visit. Its a large museum across 3 buildings with tunnels connecting them. The tunnels are art exhibits themselves. The diversity of art was impressive. At the time we went, they had 4 special exhibits, which were all included with the price of admission. I loved 3 out of the 4, and the 4th was good. Their permanent collection was quite impressive as well. They had quite a few famous artists pieces as well as prominent local artist collections. The art type included paintings, drawings, sculpture, and digital. The collections also spanned most defined periods and genres. Four hours well spent (Im sure you could spend longer). I highly recommend visiting next time youre in Houston.

The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, making the experience both educational and deeply inspiring. I also love spending time in the peaceful sculpture garden, where art meets nature beautifully. Plus, the on-site café is a great spot to relax and reflect. It s more than just a museum; it s a place that feeds the soul.

Been here twice, several hours each time and I still haven t seen the whole museum lol. My first trip: purchased tix in advance and really enjoyed seeing all the exhibits. It had to either be Black History Month or some other specific recognition month for Black artists.. but MFAH did not disappoint. My favorite was this artist whose video concept depicting Black Americans throughout history (both struggles and victories) was absolutely beautiful. Kanye West s Ultralight Beam was blaring through the speakers. It was so beautiful, it moved me to tears in that dark room. My second trip: was a Thursday, so general admission was free. It was summer vaca, so a perfect free activity for all ages. With admission being free, there was certainly more traffic than the time before. But again, the place is so big, I never really felt crowded. And I hate crowds. Anyway, the kids seemed to like it, especially the light tunnel at the main entrance. We did, however, have an off putting experience with security. There s a dimly lit tunnel with purple lights that gets you from one building to another. My curious 7 year old stepdaughter put her foot on the light that was not part of the walkway. Security yelled at her and startled her. Thankfully she didn t fall, because she very well could have. On the one hand, he is security and his job is to quite literally follow safety protocol. So, no harm there. On the other hand, her dad corrected her as it was happening. So it s just like weird that security resulted to yelling even though he saw this being corrected. Killed the mood for about five minutes, but hey what can you do. MFAH as I mentioned definitely has a lot to offer and I do know I ll be back.
