I love the Menil collection but the Dan Flavin installation is a total let down. I was the only visitor in the display on a Saturday afternoon, and it is easy to see why. It is so bad that I was grouchy over the effort it took to find, it even though it is free.

The place is cool, I like it but we were told we can only take picture at entrance by security guard so my husband pull his phone out to snap a pic of me then I tried to fix my hair and the guard not nice at all, say that its no photoshoot.... its not even anything close to photoshoot, you cant even fix your hair? God damn.

Dan Flavin themed his art around fluorescent lights and the Menil has a good example of his work in action. You wont be spending more than 5-10 minutes here but its nice and quiet and you can see why people like his artwork.

4.2 stars? Really? 2 light exhibitions? Its the most boring exhibit Ive been to. They should put up a disco ball, play some music and turn it into a roller skating rink. I should be compensated for my time driving there and my gas. Might as well stare at the light bulbs in my kitchen ceiling lights.

Under the radar Houston treasure. Lighting design like you ll just not see anywhere. Captures the colors of Montrose with poetry, humor, whimsey and moodiness. Love it!

This free, beautiful light installation is one of my favorite art destinations. Flavin has work all over the world so this local exhibit is a treat, and large at that! My the Menil Collection with easy parking right next to the building. Take a friend or saunter alone for a unique light experience you ll love.

Great exhibit all for the fair price of Free 99! You wont be able to put the inner exhibit on your socials due to photography being prohibited, but its free, so a couple of rules shouldnt ruffle feathers. The outer facade is cloaked in the green glow of neon lights that make the perfect nighttime backdrop insta worthy selfies.

What an amazing installation. I recommend walking on one side first. Walk all the way to the back room. The white lights cleanse your eyes. Come out the other side and look at every corner of the room. Look at the floor. Also, strut down the middle. Lol.

Although its quite a long walk from the rest of the Menil collection, its truly worth the trek. The lights are dazzling, and the skylight helps to counteract the colors. Plus Dan Flavins bright white fluorescent Monuments for V. Tatlin in the back of the building help to also counteract and add a bit of a contrast to the colorful main installation of the building.

Great little exhibit to see while in the Houston area. They ask you not to take photos inside so I respected those wishes. I think this would be a good place to just get some quiet time while in the fast paced city. I hear they also have live concerts and events sometimes as well! All in all a beautiful art - light exhibit worth visiting!

I think the Menil needs to work on making this installation more accessible conceptually. Colored florescent lights, a large open space and no photography allowed (a no-no if they want to attract more visitors) mean you will likely spend five minutes following the interior wall before returning to the entrance to exit and wonder what else they could use this large space for.

Cool exhibit but the guy working there was extremely rude and unreasonable, got kicked out for taking a selfie, and he said if I did it again law enforcement would be involved. I understand if they dont want you using a big camera to take pictures, but the fact that you cant even use your phone is unbelievable.
