You know when you travel to Europe and you go to a restaurant and they have the local food and the tourist food. This time around, I got served the tourist food. Undercook and bland. The first time around, I got the local meal.

This place is a gem in downtown Waco! Service was extraordinary, food was fantastic, and their new location which is inside of a historic movie theater is beautiful and romantic. I ordered jerk chicken breast with veggies and my friend ordered jerk shrimp with pasta. Never knew veggies could taste this good! We both stuffed ourselves, cause the food was way too good to stop The place was very clean, smelled beautiful, dishes were shiny and well washed, and the owner who happened to be the one to take care of us was super nice. I highly recommend this restaurant! It looks from the past reviews that they take their professionalism and authenticity everywhere they go and at any location. 100% will go back

I loved this place, our first time and we will be back again when they open up their new place. We ordered the curried goat and the pork chop plate. The curry goat spice level was outstanding and the jerk seasoning and spice level on the pork chop was awesome. I love the fact that the food is delicious without a lot of salt thrown in....they know what they are doing with the spices. We will be coming back for sure. Loved it!!!

The customer service is top tier, compared to other Caribbean restaurants. They are very kind. The atmosphere isn t a typical Jamaican atmosphere but it s nice. I ordered the veggie dish and veggie Pattie. There was no Caribbean flavor to the dishes (from what I could taste). The sorrel is usually my favorite drink to order. I ve never had it how they make it here, but it was thick. Vegetarian options: The veggies lacked flavor to me. They asked did I want my veggies spicy and I said yes, but aside from the lack of spicy there also wasn t any flavor to the veggies. The online menu for the veggie dish says coconut rice but it came with rice and peas (but lacked flavor). Just be sure you ask specifically for coconut rice when you order. I m not going to say I wouldn t recommend because everyone s taste buds are different but you ll more than likely have to add your own seasonings or ask them for salt/pepper. However, if you are trying to watch your salt/seasoning content, I would recommend.

I love exotic food but somehow Ive never had Jamaican cuisine before. I have to say, Im a fan. It wasnt elaborate or fancy. Just really good, flavorful food. My wife had the chicken and I had the goat. Ive had goat many times before and its a tough thing to get right. Pun fully intended. If its not cooked just right its tough. This was tender, fall off the bone with just the right type of flavoring. They also had these meat pastry things (patties) with beef and another with chicken. They were both good but the beef one was insane. I ordered a couple to go.

The restaurant is inside a movie theater kinda of weird but not an issue. When we arrived the waitress came over immediately which was great. We ordered ginger beer and curry patties to start and they were already out and they had just opened up 30 min before we arrived. The vibe was not giving TRUE Jamaican food. We decided not to order anything else I just did not want that experience. Hopefully the food taste better than it looks on the pictures.

June 23, 2024: Oh my goodness! We celebrated our 20th anniversary in Jamaica and ate jerk chicken, shrimp and goat curry till the days end! Missed it forever! Awesome cuisine! Found authentic goat curry in NYC once and have made homemade from scratch jerk chicken, but haven t found a restaurant in Texas with authentic Jamaican! This restaurant is the REAL deal! My wife of now 44 years had the jerk chicken & I had the goat curry. Wonderful!!! I told the waiter that I had died and gone to Jamaica! I can t believe the town of Waco could have such a hidden jewel!!! We will stop EVERYTIME in Waco to remember what Jamaica meant to us! I can t believe we did not have to wait in line! Based on my personal experience at Tru Jamaican Restaurant at the Hippodrome, I found the customer service to be good. However, the food did not meet our expectations based on the reviews. The dishes lacked the authentic Jamaican soul we were hoping for. I ordered the curry shrimp, but the sauce was watery, the rice and peas were unseasoned, and the coleslaw tasted store-bought. The curry goat was similarly disappointing, with a bland and watery gravy. Additionally, the plantain was too soft for my liking. The highlight of the meal was the rum cake, which was excellent. Having visited many different Jamaican spots, I found this restaurant fell short in delivering an authentic experience.

Update: we went back, and the food is STILL AMAZING! If you are anywhere near this place, GO! You will not be disappointed. And make sure to get the Sorrel Ginger drink. So good! ====== We were looking for something new and different, and preferably locally owned. This placed came through for us in shing colors. The interior is welcoming and colorful. And the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. We actually found ourselves talking to the owner, who clearly has a passion for the food. He checked in with us several times, and helped us choose dessert and a to go order for dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the experience. The jerk chicken was flavorful, with a pleasant but not overpowereing heat. The oxtails were rich and flavorful, with a complex and layered gravy. The sides were very tasty. The desserts we had, rum cake and sweet potato cake, were really good,. The sweet potato cake is a dense, 3 layer cake with cream cheese frosting. Wow. And the rum cake is just the perfect amount of rum. Everything was homemade, and you can taste the love in every bite. We cant wait to go back. Its about an hour drive for us, and we will drive it willingly.

I truly enjoyed my meal. I got the jerk chicken and the sauce was amazing. The beans and rice that came with it were so luscious and rich. It also came with the cabbage side salad that was very refreshing, plus plantains. The plantains out a little bit of sweet to enhance the meal. It was so good.

I ordered the curry goat and pineapple ginger drink. The portion was enough for me to have leftovers and they warmed up nicely. Customer service was EXCELLENT. We were greeted when we entered and he was very ATTENTIVE to our table once we ordered our food. The pineapple ginger drink was new for me but it was AMAZING! The goat was tender, the plantains were ripe and the rice and peas had a lil kick to it (spice). The flavors complemented each other. Coming back for sure!

One of the best restaurants in Waco, TX. Truly nothing like it. I m a picky eater so I haven t tried everything yet, but the jerk chicken, the beef patties and the pineapple ginger drink are my go-to favorites. They have a huge variety. The place is always clean and the staff is top tier. The restaurant and it s owner even makes the effort to work alongside people in the community. If you live in Waco or just passing by, you need to try this place at some point. You won t be disappointed.

The food is seasoned very well. My family is from Antigua, & this restaurant really was able to satisfy my craving of food back home. The rice & peas were perfect. The fresh salad was perfect. We had ox tails & the jerk chicken, & both were perfect. I definitely have added this place on my favorite list. Sitting on the gallery to eat allowed me to feel the nice breeze which reminded me of sitting on my gallery back home in Antigua. So glad I found this restaurant.

So, Id been wanting to try Tru Jamaica for a while, and my hubby and I were finally in Waco during business hours. We came in hungry, for a late lunch. Ive never been to Jamaica, but I grew up in NYC, and went to school with friends who immigrated from Jamaica. They always brought the best lunches to school! I can remember an argument over whose mom made the best curry goat. Sometimes I got lucky, and someone would split a Jamaican meat patty with me. But I digress... The Jamaican Beef Patty is a tasty trip down memory lane. The fragrant yellow pastry is light and flaky. The beef filling (my mouth is now watering!) is moist, and just the right amount of spicy, owing to the chefs expertise in the use of the Scotch Bonnet pepper, which is grown in-house. I had the curry goat, and I must say, its the best Ive ever had! The meat was tender, succulent, and spicy. If you want it really hot, just ask. My husband had the jerk shrimp. The shrimp were plump, fresh, and juicy. Its really easy to overcook shrimp, but not here! It was perfection! Jerk spice is a blend of 16 different herbs and spices, and distinctly Jamaican. Again, the heat level was perfect for hubby, who doesnt like food TOO hot. Our plates included coconut rice with peas (we call them red beans), fried plantains, and steamed vegetables- a mixture of cabbage, peppers, and carrots. Sometimes side dishes are just place holders, and dont really stand out. Not the case at Tru Jamaica. The rice was fluffy and flavorful and of a good portion size. The plantains were well prepared, with just a hint of sweetness. The veggies were bright, crisp-tender, and not overcooked at all. The owner came out and checked on us and talked with us. He was so friendly, and we could tell hes proud of the great food and good service his restaurant offers. I guess this review can be summed up like this: You wont be sorry if you eat at Tru Jamaica!!!

Ordered way more than I could eat. I just wanted to try everything that interested me. It was really good. I left stuffed but unlike alot of places around here I left feeling clean afterwards. There wasnt a comatose feeling that usually accompanies with the amount of food I got. Red snapper, goat curry, and ox tail. Had to try them all. I wasnt disappointed. I recommend this as a must.
