As much as we all want to pretend to like this kind of art, its just pretentious and boring. You will be reminded, though, that if you dont get it then thats because youre not an artist. They constantly will remind you to TRUST ARTISTS. Dont trust your own opinion about whats in front of you; you just need to TRUST ARTISTS! At least its free and the building itself is excellent architecture worth seeing.

Came here as it was listed as a Hurricane Beryl shelter for cooling and charging phone. Came here and was advised it is not a cooling place, but I could enter. I had my closed water bottle and was allowed in the front door with it but once I got down to the TV Screen part I sit at a broken table that almost fell the only other thing in the room was Cardboard boxes and someone approached me and said I had to throw my water bottle away or leave. It was sealed I wasn t drinking it but that I couldn t have it because it could still and cause damage! The ONLY thing in the room was an already broken table and cardboard boxes and an old couch covered in a white stained sheet, I was sitting a the broke table!!! Either way this place isn t a place to come for cooling off or anything else for that matter!

Community engagement in the historical past of Freedmens Town, combined with the promise of the future of the Contemporary Arts Exhibitions. I have been to the facility many times in the past for various exhibitions, but this time I felt more connected.

I visited on a weekend, plenty of nearby parking for free. Parking garage is within walking distance. Admission is free and they accept donations. I give it a 3 star for the following reasons. There were only 2 exhibitions. The first floor highlighted black & white prints from the artist s photography from the 60 s. The lower level had a very disturbing artist in print and the same artist live film showing violence as did the prints and descriptions. I m not a trigger person but this was definitely very dark and would have appreciated a warning as it was extremely graphic and cannot be unseen. I was expecting more artists & different mediums. This rating is solely based on one visit as the exhibits change often. The staff is wonderful. Perhaps the website had something and I just missed it. You are also walking distance to many of Houston s other museums & Herman Park and nearby hotel for food. A bit disappointing compared to other major cities for contemporary art viewing.

Second time traveled to this museum and had slightly bad experience with front desk. I just want to share what the experience was and hope this person working at front desk can do better. We entered and planned to buy two tickets. This lady at the ticket purchase center asked us how many we want with very loud and saying in slower way to us like worrying we can t understand what she was saying. We didn t want to take it personal after all work is not fun so she might be tired of sitting there selling ticket whole day. My friend was abit irritated for her attitude and asked if she s being discriminated, but I told him she might just tired of her job so it s ok let s move on. However, we went downstairs and waited the elevator next to ticket office (literally right next to that lady). She was talking to another two non-Asian guests to help them get tickets with nice gentle attitude, it was very unlike the way she talked to us. She talked to us loud and slow like assuming we can t understand English I sincerely hope it s nothing against Asians and am moving on with this issue. I believe working there is hard but I hope this will not happen again.

This reminded me of a Renwick Gallerys bottom division. While I love how they use the local area as a working environment, This tiny but large institution has the potential to host larger exhibitions and really demonstrate what it is capable of. Its a great institution to go to. Exhibitions that rotate are one-of-a-kind and vary year round. Its a plus if you can get in for free. CAMH deserves praise for making art more approachable. Plus point: The lower-level souvenir shop is a lot of fun.
