Loved loved loved this blast from the past and spent hours figuring out some of the engineering that went into the pump station. The museum could be better maintained, and the guidance more complete and better explained. The person at the office was very knowledgeable and helpful. Did not do the birding trails at this visit, but the site is very promising for birding.

We only walked around the old pump house to see the grounds. It had a nice lawn area with a nice pavilion very close to the border wall that would make a nice area for a picnic gathering. There was also a nice amphitheater that could be used for performances or a speaker.

A museum that had great designs when opened, but now has run out of steam. Broken and not working displays set in an old pumphouse that time and nature are reclaiming. There was no charge, thankfully, and it was very disappointing.

I love how many times I can go, because you live with nature, listening and watching birds, butterflies and you can look inside the museum at the water pump that at one time supplied the City of Hidalgo TX.

What a disappointment. Very small area to look for birds. Were charged $2 each to see an informational 15-minute film which was very chopped during the last five minutes. Upon leaving, asked the woman at the entrance desk where the restrooms were and she said outside. Upon getting the buildings (M & W), the doors were padlocked. Had to go back to ask to get them unlocked. After waiting for her to find the keys and open them, we found no toilet in any of the stalls and no soap at the sinks. Dont go -- youll be disappointed.

This place isnt kept up as well as it should in the landscaping department. Needs more attention. Years back, they invested more time and attention. I havent seen the creek working for ages, and the weeds at times are way overgrown besides a few ankle breaker holes here and there. I am not sure why they now keep the door closed to go to the wooden deck to observe part of the Rio Grande River, but thats another story, guessing because bikes go through there, but who knows. Inside, it is nice and shows old memories and the history of the Rio Grande and the old Pump House.

Cannot quite figure this place out. Definitely my least favorite of the World Birding Centers. Woman in welcome center was putting together Easter baskets and the doors were locked. Perhaps they are closed at lunch(?). I didn t trust the wood platform in the viewing area overlooking the lake. Lots of litter along the water. The fishing pier was much sturdier, but had really high steps. The museum was o.k., but there wasn t any guidance and it was dimly lit. We got to the end and had to return to the beginning because gates were locked. The only part I enjoyed was the small pond with turtles and ducks.

If it was for the structure and surrounding area alone, I would love to give it more stars. However, the ladies at the visitor center were cold and mild. They offered zero insight on the place and thats such a shame. There arent very many spots like this in the RGV and their lackluster attitude has no place in this historical spot. They lacked people skills and did not seem too approachable at all. It is free so thats cool, but Id rather pay and get a some insight. The pumphouse is beautiful, but they seem to use it as storage for holiday stuff and oddities and it ruins the back in time experience. Again it is free but Id rather pay if that means they could store the junk elsewhere. Might do some research to see who I can contact regading these concerns.

Very interested in seeing and visiting this historical site. Were there on a Sunday afternoon and hours posted said 9 - 5. However, lady working closed museum at 2 and said she was going to lunch and would be back at 3:30. We walked around the grounds, drove around the town. When we went back the lady didnt open the museum, but just sat in her car. Very disappointing since we drove over 50 miles to see this.

This is one of the nine World Birding Centers in the Rio Grande Valley area. I find the birds to be very, very scarce here . they were scarce the last time we visited about a year ago also. Maybe some emphasis needs to be put in to setting up a feeding station to help with bringing birds in.
