The food is delicious! We had a boudin, 2 lbs. of brisket, and a sausage plate. Our sides were green beans, bbq beans, spicy rice, and red beans and rice. The boudin was the largest that I have seen and is my daughter s favorite. There is nothing that we didn t like. Thank you Leon for y alls hospitality!

First time eating here and will def be back if ever back in Galveston. Leon came over personally and checked on us and our food. The atmosphere was like being at your Grandparents house. I didnt want the Franchise BBQ chain , thats all we have here up North, I wanted that Mom and Pop shop atmosphere and thats exactly what I got. Authentic BBQ! Food was Great. I got the Lean Brisket, I would suggest the Regular Brisket it was juicer and cheaper. Both were good .

First time trying this place and probably the last. Overall it was an okay experience. Wouldn t recommend if you re looking for some good bbq. Ordered ribs, brisket sandwich, Mac n cheese, and the NC Chip. Brisket sandwich was brisket on a plate with 4 slices of white bread to put together. Brisket was burnt and dried. Mac n cheese was bland and lacking flavor. Most likely out of a box. Ribs were alright. Fall of the bone but had no flavor. NC Chip sandwich reminded me of a sloppy Joe sandwich. Service was okay. Only was attended to order, when food came out and to bring the check. Had to wait to get someone to refill our drinks. The atmosphere isn t very comforting. Old and outdated building

I came to Texas and wanted to try some BBQ. Reviews brought me to Leons BBQ which turned out to be misleading and a disappointment. The prime beef brisket was very dry. It was served in all different cuts which appears to be from left-over cuts? Also, the young & tender spare ribs were dry, just slightly less dry than the brisket but still dry. I thought Tex-BBQ was suppose to melt in your mouth? Reason I gave it 2 stars was because of the bouin, mac & cheese and turnip green was reasonably. Ill have to fine another place to get my Texas BBQ fixed before Im outta town.

I hate to speak ill of Army Veterans place, but this was the worst bbq I have had since starting to work on the Island. Lets Start with the Leons Cut Brisket, it was praised by the young lady as everyones favorite and they love it as it was the fatty juicy brisket. When I opened my meal at my office, just a mile away, everything including the Brisket was Dry and the was no juice to the Brisket or Ribs. Everyone that saw it said the same thing that looks dried out. Now maybe its an off day, but it was the worst of the three places I have tried on Galveston Island so far. Sorry Mr. Leon, I cannot recommend your place to anyone after that very expensive dried out meal.

This was the best Barbeque I ve ever eaten. Granted, I am not from the south- so it may be bias because meat is just not the same freshness in the Midwest, but dang. That food was absolutely delicious. I was shocked at the potato salad, and the ribs and the chicken! The chicken was absolutely to die for. Delicious sweet tea as well. I would go back again any day. We actually got to meet Leon! He came out and said hello (We were the only ones there at that time)! Plus he gave us a free desert! Truly, this is a small business you should support any time you can! SO GOOD!

We are on vacation and wanted some Texas BBQ. Leon s had some excellent reviews, so we headed to Galveston. When we pulled up, I was a bit hesitant to he in because the outside appearance; however, the delicious aroma of the BBQ filled the neighborhood. We ordered our meal with the help of our lovely waitress, she recommended the three meats and Leon s cut, which was a fatty and juicy cut. Our dinner included 2 sides, but we ordered a third. Our meats were brisket, ribs, and sausage. Each was exceptional and by far the best BBQ I ve ever eaten. The ribs have dry rub and fell off the bone. The brisket was juicy and tender and the sausage had the right amount of spice. The price was reasonable; $28.00 for everything. Don t let the exterior fool you! It s worth the stop.

A little difficult/confusing to a first-timer as the entry door is on the side road, 55th, rather than the main road side of the building . Ive now tried all of the barbecue joints on the island, and hands down this is the best one! Very impressed. I had the two meat dinner with the chicken and the turkey and sides of the turnip greens and red beans and rice. Everything was absolutely delicious, fresh, hot and very flavorful! The ladys out front were extremely helpful and friendly. I enjoyed reading the various articles on the walls about Mr Leon. I also like that you had a choice between white and wheat bread with your dinner. Definitely recommend and will be back.

3-10-24 Found Leons by looking around on Google Maps and was glad to have seen it. We were greeted as we came in and had a nice recommendation from the waitress on what to order. We decided on a 2 meat plate with two sides. We saw short ends on the menu, and mistakenly thought it was something we used to have in North Carolina BBQ places, burnt ends. After the confusion was cleared up, the lady asked in the back if it was possible and they brought us some out. I also asked for their North Carolina Chip BBQ I was thinking it would be pork, but it too was beef, in their bbq sauce. The meat in both was very tender and flavorful. We had potato salad and bbq beans as sides. While the plate was being prepared, we were brought 4 slice of bread and a small bowl with onions and pickles. We wish we had found Leons a few months ago, as we have been down for the winter and are leaving soon. If back in the area, we will return.

When it comes to a party, you should know food matters. I HIGHLY recommend Leons to cater an event! I got their brisket, slice turkey, sausage links, bbq beans and potato salad for my house warming. ALL my guest could not stop bragging on how juicy and tender the brisket was. They loved the potato salad and the bbq baked beans. Everyone was coming back for seconds! The food was absolutely amazing! Everyone kept asking who made it and I gladly provided all my guest with Leons in Galveston. There was barely food at the end and whatever was left, people made sure to make to-go plates. Next day, family members were calling to see if any bbq was left over and one person even said they put they foot in this and i need more of it. Thank you so much Leons for making my house warming a party to brag about! Like i said, food matters when it comes to a party and mine had a wonderful turn out because of your delicious food. I also want to thank Ada for being so kind, polite and sweet to me over the phone as her and her brother help me decide how much food I would need for a party of almost 70 people. I appreciate you and everyone who helped prepare my order. God bless.

On 11/29 , I attended a class near Leo barbecue. The customer service was great but the food was horrible. I ordered 2 meats and 2 sides. The chicken was extremely dry and no flavor like it was sitting out for a while. The barbecue ribs were dry and taste old and the barbecue sauce was greasy. The mustard greens were out of a can and I am a cook myself so I know they were canned but if that s what you do fine but they were salty and disgusting. The barbecue beans were meh. The buttermilk pie was undesirable. I really try to support black businesses but maybe this wasn t a good day and considering I came at the end of the day I received what was left over.

This is our first trip to Galveston (my first trip to anywhere in Texas since I was 13) and since we are headed out on a cruise tomorrow, and we flew in 2 days early, one big requirement was to find QUALITY BBQ while we were here. Our biggest requirement was that it had to be a Mom & Pop shop... no chain restaurants for us. We discovered Leons after some Google searches before coming to Galveston, and based on photos of the place, we made the decision to check them out. Right on the main drag into Galveston, I spotted it when we drove in the evening before... very easy to locate, and the sign, while small, is indicative of everything we hoped to expect from their BBQ. We all agreed to hit them up for lunch the next day. When we showed up, they werent seating in the dining room - but thats okay - we had decided to take it back to the hotel lobby to eat lunch beforehand. We met the daughter, celebrating her birthday and she took our orders. (Happy Birthday! ) When in doubt, you ALWAYS GET THE NAMESAKE DISH! My hubby, our friend, and myself all chose the Leons Cut - a juicier brisket cut, with the fat - 1-meat dinner which came with two sides. I chose the mac & cheese and red beans & rice, my hubby got the mac & cheese and potato salad, and our friend picked red beans & rice and coleslaw. All the dinners come with a choice of white or wheat bread as well as pickles & sliced raw onions. They let us sit in the car in our AC while they packed up our meals and brought it out to us. With the heat warning, we appreciated this, although we could have hopped out to get it when ready. They were all super nice and very helpful at picking out items. When we unpacked the meals at the hotel, we were not disappointed! The meat was juicy, full of smoke, salty in all the right ways, and the flavors were top-notch. And the 1-meat portion is HUGE! I loved the homemade mac & cheese, and the red beans & rice were packed in a separate bowl, so it didnt slosh in the containers. I appreciate this little step. I got to try my hubbys potato salad and quite enjoyed the tangy flavors. We were surprised that we each got two slices of bread, so our friend asked if he could have the bread to make his own little sandwiches. He later told us that he was SO HAPPY to have brisket sandwiches while he was here. Oh, and their BBQ sauce was nice and thin, with a great vinegar base. I dont normally use BBQ sauces because they tend to be too sweet, but this had the PERFECT balance. Id buy that sauce to use at home if I could sneak it back on the plane. For those who arent sure about hole-in-the-wall, or Mom & Pop shops that dont generally advertise their businesses, my best advice is when you know their business hours, plan to go earlier in the day, closer to when they open. You get fresher cuts and more choices from the menu. You wont be disappointed. If we come back down here for another cruise, and we bring my In-laws, we will make sure we come to Leons again. We noticed the for sale sign on the building, though... so hopefully, that just means a new location in their future.

Let me start out by saying I gave 3 stars based on others reviews but in my opinion the lack of real follow through on the complaints takes away. My husband and I come to Galveston often this time I was googling for bbq and came across Leons. I saw the complaint and pictures and your reaction and response to a 10 year customer and was shocked! It was obvious you expect loyalty from customers but offer little to none! It would have been better to ignore their complaints rather than the half apology that was given. Yes its not unusual for an establishment to have a bad day in the kitchen but it is NEVER ok to disrespect and speak abusively to a customer. Since you lost control for whatever reason there should have been apologies all over the place with an offer of returning and at least get a bogo! They didnt give up on a 10 year relationship in my opinion you did! Actually I noticed a few complaints of bad days in the kitchen reported with not as much as an offer of a dessert or any attempt to rectify just apologies. Ive seen many establishments fail to appreciate the very people they depend on to stay in business slowly go out of business because a satisfied customer may tell 4-5 people but an unsatisfied customer 15-20 or more and with the internet its unlimited! Were true foodies so we are happy to spend whatever it takes at a food establishment thats just as happy to make a mistake right as they are to see me come in to spend my money. Were 2 that your lack of loyalty to your customers changed our minds and sent us looking elsewhere!

Let me start off this review with Ive been going to Leon well over 10 plus years including family and friends. Ive always enjoyed the food, the staff and Mr Leon. Today 6/3/2023 most definitely was the last day my family, friends and myself will ever patronize this black owned establishment which I absolutely use to love. The reason being due to the unprofessional and disrespect shown by Mr Leon today. I was in town and as I usually do stopped by for a rib sandwich. Ordered my sandwich to go and went to the seawall to indulge. Well to my surprise 2 of my ribs were not fresh and dried out. I decided to overlook it and proceeded to open my onions and pickles only to find the onions were brown and old. At this point I decided to take my food back to request fresher. I arrived back at Leons. I explained/showed the young lady at the cashier the brown onions and the dried out ribs, then another lady came out they both acknowledged it and said we will take care of it. Well out of nowhere Mr Leon comes out the kitchen asking whats wrong. As I proceeded to explain to him the onions are old and brown and the ribs are not fresh , theyre dried out. He instantly became agitated, walked up into my personal space, put his finger in my face and said dont say my food is not fresh and called me a flat out liar and began to argue with me. The downright disrespect and unprofessionalism he displayed absolutely floored me. I told him you must not be having a good day because you will not talk to me like that but due to my mother raising me correct I will not disrespect my elder. Mr Leon continued to act unprofessional and argue with me. Smh. I was on my bluetooth with a family member while the verbal altercation took place and she asked who was that and I told her the owner Mr Leon. She stated oh thats unacceptable they dont have to worry about our business anymore. The young ladies apologized and brought me out fresh ribs and onions. Their customer service was superb and I appreciated it very much. Mr Leon should have took lessons from them. If the first disrespect wasnt enough Mr Leon comes back out the kitchen a 2nd time to argue yet again. I told him you do not argue with a customer and walk up on them and put your finger in their face, he flat out lied and said he didnt. This is not the legacy Mr Leon and his business should want to be known for after all the years, its truly sad. If you dont know how to talk to a customer stay in the back cause no one has a right to talk to anyone the way Mr Leon did less known to a customer. Im attaching pics of the dried out ribs and brown old onions. First rib pic is the dried out ribs, the last pic is of the fresh ones given to me after taking them back.

Fair warning: this is a long, favorable, review. Leons deserves 6 stars out of 5. I will start by saying we (8 of us) were the only family to stay and eat - on Tuesday nights I guess most of the business is carry-out. But every person who came was greeted by name or treated like they were close family.... we were no exception. Towards the end of our supper Leon himself came out and chatted with us. Among the stories he shared he told us he honed his craft in the military (25 years in the army and 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, thankyouverymuch!) and it totally shows. He also served/catered Ruth Bader Ginsburgs supreme court inaguration supper. So we each had different combinations of meats (brisket, sausage, turkey, and yard bird [chicken]) along with sides. My nephew ate all his mac & cheese, then ate his sisters, then proclaimed Leon had ruined all others for him - it was the best mac of his life. The turkey was tender, moist, and oh-so-delicious with just the right amount of peppery flavor. The brisket was perfect. My mom, who is tiny, ate almost all of hers (which is saying a lot!), all the while saying how filling and tender and juicy it was, then asked me if I was going to eat all my potato salad. The greens were by far the best - if youve ever hesitated to try them anywhere else, dont, here! My dad had the stuffed potato and it was huge and according to him & my mom, superb. My brother-in-law had the sausage & brisket and I think he said maybe 2 words the entire meal: mmmmm and more. My neices boyfriend had the yard bird sandwich and if youve ever seen a 17-year-old muscular boy reach full then you have an idea how fast that disappeared. I think he said even less than my brother-in-law. Then Leon offered us desserts. He brought out a rice pudding cake (I think thats what he called it) with rum sauce for my dad to try. He liked it so much he ordered it for all of us, but we wanted brownies, buttermilk pie, and pecan pie instead. Im allergic to buttermilk but the bite I had was so worth it. Bottom line: everything, and I mean everything, on the menu is so delicious there is no wrong choice. Im adding a photo my sis took of Leon (left) and my dad. If youve ever felt like youre being treated like long-lost family then you know why it wasnt just the food, but Leon and everyone there, that made this a most incredible, memorable, dining experience.

Not understanding the hype? Brisket was bland and tough... sausage was okay, but can you really screw up sausage?? Turnip greens were absolutely disgusting!!! Mac and Cheese was nothing short of box kraft and i had to load it with salt and pepper (literally).... the service was ok. Order sweet tea she refilled with unsweetened tea?! Gave the rest of my food to my dog... definitely not worth the hype. Im guessing people who gave 5 stars havent had much BBQ in their life. Highly disappointed came all the way from Austin! Oh and they charge you $2 for credit/debit.

Like others have said we had to do a doubletake to find the restaurant since it looks very residential from the outside but the smell of BBQ is the first indication we were in the right place. Once inside we were greeted with the finest southern hospitality. The sweet tea is the cornerstone of southern cooking so it was an obvious choice of refreshment and paired well with everything we ordered. I inquired if they had my favorite cut, burnt ends and was blown away at how good they were! The burnt ends were even better than the Leons cut. This restaurant is surely a hidden gem and a great place to grab lunch or dinner.

Service is excellent here, employees are polite and nice. The reason why this place gets two stars is because the food here is not up to par. I was given an expired sour cream packet and my beer was warm. If you want good bbq this is not the place to go. Its not that the food was bland is the fact that everything tasted like vinegar, and the Macn is cheese had a funny after taste. Took the plate home to be considerate, but threw it away when I got home. As once considered the best bbq place in Galveston, this disappoints me to see this place with bad food.

Wow wow wow! I just stuffed my face with THE BEST BBQ I ve ever had!!! Leon came out and took a photo with us and was gracious enough to share his homemade Buttermilk Pie. The lean brisket was so flavorful and despite being lean, incredibly juicy. The regular brisket was even juicier and the ribs were out of this world!!! The sides - we got coleslaw, baked beans, green beans, potato sa, and collard greens. We devoured it all and my goodness the potato salad and baked beans were so delicious, I liked the bowls! And last but not least - we got the rum cake, sweet potato pie, bread pudding, and Leon gave us fresh slices of Buttermilk pie. It was all so damn good, there are just no words!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I ll be back again for sure.

The chicken was So dry and the sliced beef was old and burnt( I didn t ask for in the first place) then I asked for chopped beef and got chopped chicken pieces on a hard bun covered with pickles and unnecessary onions. Slap Yo Momma Good! Choose between 1 meat or 2 plus sides. The chicken is tender and juicy. The cook put their foot in those greens, seasoning is like Grannies. The bbq beans were tender and seasoned perfectly. The mash potatoes are from scratch, real potatoes, not flakes. The only thing I didnt care for, that I was really looking forward to, was the Mac n cheese. To me it had a sour taste so I didnt eat any past the 1st bite. The woman who waited on us was personable and was attentive. After our meal we got to meet Mr. Leon himself. He told us about how he started as an army cook and how his restaurant came about. He showed us newspaper articles about himself that were taped to a wall inside the restaurant, and told us the stories that went with them. Then, he was pulled away to get back to work in his kitchen. If youre looking for authentic soul food in Galveston, Leons Worlds Finest Bar-B-Que is the spot!
