Tricky Fish

About the Company

rating: 4.5

Great food, fresh ingredients, simply prepared...any more than that and things get complicated. Tricky Fish, the idea for it anyway, was born along Chinquapin Reef in East Matagorda Bay. And on the water off Port A and near the barrier islands south of Cocodrie, LA. Days spent on the water and evenings spent with good friends, a cold beer and amazing food. Eating out should be a break from the real world. It should be fun, relaxing, a chance to get away from all the things that make our lives... well, complicated. A good meal, spending time with family and friends, trying a local craft beer or glass of wine on the patio - that's what Tricky Fish is all about.

My dad, brother and I were in town mainly to watch the Dallas Cowboys (my dad is a diehard fan) and we decided to visit this resto for a seafood-themed lunch right before a planned tour of the Star training facility right across the street. It was my first time trying grits! Very creamy, almost reminding me of porridge and quite rich with the added parmesan cheese! I quite liked it! There was ample seafood running through all the dishes which was good to see. No ripping off the customer. I really enjoyed the flavour of the linguine as I could actually taste the sherry in the sauce! The portion sizes were very decent. Salmon couldve used a lil more cook time. It was JUST medium rare (prolly edging more towards rare actually). My family tends to prefer medium doneness on salmon. It was fine. The lemon butter sauce very tasty. Service was quite prompt. I dont remember our servers name but she brought menus and drinks to us very fast after being seated. Id be down to return to Tricky Fish in the future! Most likely at one of their other locations. They had gumbo on the menu and I was tempted to try it but oh well. Next time!

We love Tricky Fish at The Star. We pretty much go every Friday evening and catch the last 30 minutes of happy hour and then do dinner. You can t beat their 1/2 price bottles of wine during happy hour. We have never had bad service - shout out to Henry who we have had the last two times and adore! My go to is the Blackened Shrimp and Grits - the sauce on the grits is AMAZING. My girls share the shrimp and catfish platter and my daughter refuses to eat the catfish anywhere else. My hubby tries something different every time, but loves their boils and the bourbon sherry linguine. Go give them a try!

She makes the best margaritas and honestly that good enough for me, but when you add that she s always smiling, happy, and ready to deliver top notch drink and service, that makes Tricky Fish my go to spot! Hopefully she will be promoted to full time bartender soon, because I love her energy!

No one greeted me when I came in I had to greet the employees that was the first red flag. But things got way worse when I picked up my food. My fish and chips was a burnt square block that smelled sooo fishy I knew it wasn t fresh. Then I opened up my coleslaw container and it had a LIVE fly stuck in it. I drove back and showed the food the manger and got a refund. Thank god I didn t put the food in my mouth. I am traumatized.

Service was little disorganized as we other appetizers which never came and the food started to come so we had to cancel it . Po boy was good sandwich but they could add some sauce like tartar to make it more tasty. Seafood taco were not great it tasted mostly shrimps I feel they could had more stuff like lobster, crab meat to make more or seafood experience

We arrived at 1 for or reservation and were immediately seated. Front staff was friendly. Our waiter arrived after about 5 minutes and took our drink and food order. Our appetizer, the homemade bleu cheese chips, came out in a timely manner and tasted great. The dish was a bit smaller than expected for the price, but they were really good. Our lunch plates . well after nearly an hour and having to ask about the meals we were told that there was an issue with the computer and the meals were yet to be prepared. For a first time visit that was a bit concerning and felt like a fabricated response. I felt that the waiter just forgot to put the order in. They immediately made it right and told us that our meal would be taken care of. The food was brought out, and I have to say, the fish and chips plate and redfish plate were very good. The batter on the fish was chips was crunchy and the fish was juicy and flavorful. Also, the Mac n cheese was very good as well. Would we return to give them another chance? Most definitely. I m not from the area, but my daughter and son-in-law are, and they said they would be back for another try. 3 stars are only due to the major mess up with our food order and not recognizing the issue in a timely manner. A follow up review will adjust the score accordingly. The food was really good guys. If not for the service blunder it would be a 5 star meal. 4 star atmosphere due to the open ceiling which makes the place a little loud when people are talking.

I m so glad we read the reviews and gave this place a try on our trip! The atmosphere was fun and inviting. The service made us feel like family in the attention and care they offered. Fast and friendly. AND THE FOOD!!! We enjoy a good Cajun style and they did not disappoint. Calamari was exceptional, perfectly battered and fried exactly right-not overly friend like I ve had at other places. The Boudin balls were so tasty. Obvious that they re house made (I didn t ask but I would have a hard time believing anything we had wasn t completely scratch/house made). I ordered and thoroughly enjoyed my fish & chips. The cod was perfectly battered and fried. I ate every bite even after being full. My husband ordered and enjoyed his crawfish étouffée with blackened salmon. He s picky about his étouffée and nearly licked his plate lol. It was good, my friends. I didn t snap a pic of our entrees because we were too excited to eat them and we d eaten half of the calamari before I remembered a pic.

I cannot recommend this wonderful establishment enough. One of the greatest meals of my life. From top to bottom, I could not find anything to critique and that is how I approach my meals. The boudin balls and piquant sauce were perfect and no grease. The fried green tomatoes are great and sent over the top with the blackened shrimp. The calamari was tender and crispy with no grease. The entrees, we got the fish and chips which was so large meaty and flaky thar it took you to a coastal restaurant. Too many fries for two people to eat, but delicious they were. The shrimp piquant had no shortage of shrimp and did I mention that the piquant sauce was perfect? The French toast bread pudding was delectable with the right amount of ice cream to go with it. The key lime pie had raving reviews as well. It was supposed to be taken home and shared, but the sharing part did not happen. The biggest surprise of the afternoon was the oyster shooters with Titos. Ive had oyster shooters up and down the coasts, and have never found one as good as my first one in San Antonio until today. James you are running a good store at The Star and our service was wonderful. It had the vibe of being coastal. Go as slow as you want, but the food came out quickly. Note: recommend that you order your entree halfway through your appetizer. We did this and it was perfect timing. Vegetarian options: There are a few. Dietary restrictions: Will cook to order as much as they can. Parking: Parking is available but hit and miss on the street. Plenty in the garage. Kid-friendliness: Did not have this experience today. Wheelchair accessibility: Definitely has wheelchair access.

Not bad, but not great, a tad pricey! We will go back to try entrees. Tried a dozen shrimp, two crab cakes both excellent but pricey adding up to $40. As well, we had the crab and shrimp bisque, which, although pretty good, was not a cream base like most traditional bisque Ive had. It was tasted to me like a rich butternut squash with ample shrimp & crab. The atmosphere was pleasant, like many of the other restaurants at the Star. We will be back

The okra we got as a side with the fish tacos wasn t breaded, which actually made it so much better! Might have been the best okra I ve ever had! The Cobb salad was also pretty good, with quite the variety of toppings and a delicious honey mustard vinaigrette. The fish tacos were just average, and the gumbo, despite having good chunks of sausage and seafood, was shockingly unflavorful and bland. I would not order those again.

We were highly impressed with our dining experience at Tricky Fish! After being promptly seated, we ordered the calamari as an appetizer upon the recommendation of our awesome waitress. As a former West Coast resident, Tricky Fish easily has the best calamari I have had in Texas. During our appetizer, we had the opportunity to speak with Paige, the restaurant manager, who asked us how our meal was so far. She was such a pleasure to meet and very kind! We then ordered the fish and chips, along with the redfish accompanied by mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley. Both entrees were cooked perfectly and excellent representations of how seafood should always be served. Paige made our evening even better by graciously offering us a complementary appetizer, which we happily accepted. We ordered the French toast sundae with ice cream, which is one of our favorite new desserts in recent memory. The Tricky fish has it all: excellent food, superior customer service, and a great atmosphere. We will be adding Tricky Fish to our rotation of Friday night dining locations!

The sautéed squash and zucchini had the right of off the grill flavor and they really were good enough to be a stand alone dish. The naked potatoes... this was where they may need improvement. They were not really creamy at all. Kind of mill like texture like a tapioca. The service was adequate but not memorable. Overall a good experience.

I decided to take my wife to this establishment because I noticed it when I was in the area weeks ago. We went on a Tuesday: We walked in and were promptly greeted and seated. The place had plenty of seats, and the atmosphere was welcoming. The decor was astonishing with the bar facing the windows & screen Tvs on display for the restaurant to view. Our seats were comfortable. The restroom was clean. At our table: Our waitress, Cidney, was very attentive and friendly. She recommended some cuisines, which was a big plus. There was a fair amount of cuisines to choose from. My wife ordered the blackened shrimp and grits with steamed vegetables. I ordered the fish & shrimp platter. Food: Our food came out appealing to the eye, hot, well-seasoned, and tasty. However; I wished I could have cut the salt & had larger pieces of fish. But, We still enjoyed our experience, and we will definitely be back

Kyle, the bartender, was amazing! With multiple customers, he was always attentive. The food came out at a reasonable time, seeing that they were busy with the Octoberfest festival. James, the manager , stepped up and stepped in! I appreciate the head of a team stepping in to help! Yesterday was my first time here and the experience was so amazing that I had to leave a review. Definitely a place to bring your business.

I just left and Lily was my server. She was very attentive. You should ask for her. I had the tricky fish w/blackened red fish & etouffee. I love the fact they actually make a roux instead of a tomato base. Im not a fan of the way you prepare your okra and I love okra! Also got a couple appetizers to go. Ill be back! Thank you Lily!

Had to work nearby 15 hours all night. I got the Shrimp and Catfish platter for dinner at 8:45 pm, subbed mixed vegetables for the fries, and I swear they were the best Ive ever had! Perfectly sautéed in a delicious broth that I have to find out how to make, I cant wait to have them again, and their Cole Slaw is top notch too. I also ordered the Thai grilled wings with slaw to nibble through the night later. 8 crispy wings in a spicy sauce with just the right amount of heat, and the Thai based slaw matched perfectly!

I came here with my family and I have to say we had a good time and enjoyed the food and service as well. I had the chips and queso and calamari as starters. The chips are definitely made in house made and were scrumptious and the queso was decadent as well. The chips were perfectly fried in a kettle fashioned and had seasoning on then that helped enhanced flavor. The queso was cheesy with a tomato salsa in it. The calamari was fried perfectly, and seasoned well, if you love calamari this is fine high quality and perfectly seasoned and fried For my entree I ate the fried oysters with fries and mac and cheese. I really liked the fried oysters. They were seasoned, not too salty fried perfectly and a decent size as well. I definitely recommend them. The fries was ok to me nothing special in my opinion. The mac and cheese was very good. It was cheesy ,cooked perfectly, and a decent portion size. I wanted to have the hurricane for my cocktail but it wasnt ready yet, so I settled for a passion fruit frozen margarita. It was good, but also tart I definitely recommend you try out Tricky Fish for yourself Kid-friendliness: Great kids menu only $8 with a drink!

This was my first experience at this Tricky Fish. It is in the Star complex (Dallas Cowboys). The food was cooked and plated perfectly! I had the fish sandwich with a side of okra. The sandwich was outstanding! Bread lightly toasted and the fish cooked to perfection! Im not a big fish fan, but this was really good. The filet was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. It came with cole slaw, which I had served on the side. It was not too strong or tart, but had a light dressing. The fries were also perfect. Warm and fluffy on the inside, but crispy on the outside. The okra was good. Its not your regular Southern okra, which is heavily breaded, but had a barely noticeable crust and was nicely seasoned. They were not slimy, but more like a dried French fry. They may not be for everyone, but we liked them. I had ranch on the side with my fries. It was inhouse ranch and was really good. I had planned on getting a burger, but tried something different and Im glad I did! Our server, Monica, was good, but it took a long time for her to return after leaving us the check. She didnt say a word after leaving us there unable to leave. Im sure she had a reason, but we wanted to get on with our day. The tables and floors were clean, the music was good, juat a tad loud for the afternoon. If youre in the area and want a good burger or fish sandwich, this is a safe bet!

This was my 1st time eating here and I was quite impressed. Service was friendly, quick, and efficient. Our server always approached with a smile and talking with her was nice even though she was really busy. We never felt like she was rushing us or that she was distracted. I only had a nibble cause I wasnt really hungry. I had the boudin balls which were very tasty. They couldve been a bit spicier and the meat to rice ratio couldve been better balanced (in meats favor) but they were hot, flavorful, and perfectly crispy. Other items ordered at our table were the Mac n cheese w/ shrimp, calamari, seafood tacos, thai chili wings, and fried green tomatoes. No one had any complaints about their food. Drinks were all well balanced and tasty, too. The Sno Cone was popular at our table and was really pretty and refreshing. Bathrooms were clean and easily accessible. The restaurant seems to be a bit small for the crowd that was there but moving around was still manageable. Parking: There are at least 2 parking garages that allow easy access to the shops and restaurants, with ample parking spaces. Kid-friendliness: We were there to pre-game for HS football Friday and there were LOTS of kids ranging from elementary to high school age. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves as did their families.

What a great seafood cajun hybrid restaurant at The Star! Great location, parking meh, but, its The Star. Great customer service! My bartender, Chaeni, was so nice, helped recommend a Beach Blossom signature drink that was delicious! Michael was so helpful and personable. When my daughters fish & chips came out, there werent many fries, ahem, chips.... so we asked for a few more, and Michael brought over more, fresh and piping hot! I had blue cheese chips that were delicious! I also tried the Fire & Ice mule, it too, was very nice. The fish with the f&c was AhMazing! Definitely recommend!

Stopped by Tricky Fish while at the Ford Center for a sports event and it was one of the few restaurants during half time that was able to sit us without a wait. We had the cat fish platter and seafood tacos. The cat fish itself was very yummy, the only thing I wish was that it was fried for a little bit longer as it was a bit mushy. Still super yummy the way it was. The seafood tacos were also tasty and were topped with a nice cheese that really rounded out each bite. The Mai Tai was a bit disappointing, but I think that was just because the staff was being hit with rush hour and put the drink together. Overall, I still think this restaurant is worth coming by. You can tell that the management really values each customer. They go out of their ways to open the doors for you to the restaurant and stop by your table to say thank you for eating with them.

Tried Tricky Fish out and I was happy I did! Across from The Star in Frisco, its a great place to grab lunch or a drink or two. The menu is full of tasty choices. I started with the 30A Queso. A cup of 50/50 blend of cheddar and Velveeta to give it that creamy appeal. Onion, garlic, cilantro, green chilies and diced tomatoes create a delicious starter. Accompanied by their own seasoned, crispy chips, you cant go wrong! Next I had the Crawfish Etouffee. Fantastic! Nice deep brown rue, okra and dirty rice, cajun spices and loads of crawfish make a very satisfying meal. I literally had crawfish in every spoonful to the bottom of the bowl! You can add redfish, mahi, salmon, jumbo shrimp or chicken breast for an upcharge. My server Kizzy kept me hydrated and had everything served hot to me. This is a very open and enjoyable restaurant. Uncrowded seating and nice bar area. Theres even patio seating out front for when football weather finally reaches us! Very impressed with this place.

We wanted to try a new place, but unfortunately we didn t even get to try their food. Sunday the 18th for Father s Day we walked in around 5ish. Got seated right away which we thought was a great sign. My daughter and I went to the restroom as my husband and son were seated at the booth. We came back to sit with them. And I asked my husband if someone had asked for our drinks he said no. There were couple empty booths and tables. They were not full at all. We sat there for about 15 to 20 minutes without anyone saying anything to us . We walked out. As we were leaving the guy who sat us down just turned away without saying a word. Will not be back.

Was excited to try out this restaurant with another couple and we were all quickly disappointed. Ordered my redfish blackened and it came back raw, manager said he would have it refired and brought it back and said I took care of it. My girlfriend ordered a rice side which did not state anywhere in the decription it would be filled with mushrooms, much to her disappointment. She then ordered the Mac and cheese side and the cup it came in was hot but the Mac and cheese was room temperature. The restaurant was not busy and more than once I had to flag down our waitress for service. Got our check and was surprised my raw fish was still on their after the manager said he took care of it; manager did not come back at any point to ensure the fish and the rest of the food was acceptable. We all left unsatisfied and still hungry, wouldnt recommend! After Owners Response: After paying over $60 for a completely unsatisfying meal with bad service and only receiving an apology 4 days later; I can guarantee you we wont be back as it seems you have little interest in truly making things right!

So, of course being the South Louisiana girl that I am AND it was a Friday during Lent, I ordered the fried oysters and shrimp. But this time, I added catfish. We also order fried Calamari, it came with fried okra. The okra was a different cut, long ways not the typical round fried okra. Everyone got variations of the oysters, shrimp and fish plate. We also ordered crab and shrimp bisque. Our server was Collin. He was attentive, thorough and seemed to know what he was doing. Good food, great Louisiana flavor. I will certainly be back.
