We were lead to this restaurant by its appearance in the NBC program TX Today. To start off our dinner, we ordered Margaritas and the Pork Rind appetizer which were both excellent. The Chef (Jose Luis Rodriguez) came to our table, nice touch, and made his recommendations for entrees. We ordered (1) a mixed steak and shrimp skillet topped with sautéed diced potatoes, onions and peppers with an Asian touch, and (2) a specially made order of street tacos with tempura fish and shrimp, both dishes with freshly made rice and refried beans. Both plates were delicious. To finish it off we were treated for our anniversary with crispy churros filled with caramel accompanied by a scoop of ice cream. The experience was great, topped off by the excellent waiter service, Victor, and the visit by the Chef. The ambiance is nice, plenty of space and well laid out. Well be coming back!!

Wonderful food. I had Shepards pie. Very savory. The curry sauce was delightful which complimented the rice and veggies. I also had the chorizo fondue I believe, which was delicious. A bit greasy from the melted cheese, but thats expected and I absolutely loved it. Well portioned. The server was on top of everything and was fast. Planning on coming again since there were quite a few things on the menu that caught my eye.

My friend and I went last night (Tuesday, 8/27) because it was taco night. She and her husband had raved about this restaurant and they werent wrong! The tacos were so good. 3 small street sized cheesy chicken tacos. The cheesy part was like a cripy piece of cheese propped up in the taco. The chips were legit and the salsas were both wonderful. The owner and chef came out and visited. I know they are worried and there wasnt a crowd when we were there. Give it a shot! You wil lbe happy you did, I think.

What a gem that we almost missed! I was craving enchiladas to help with my hangover, but when we got there and looked at the menu there were no enchiladas, so we almost left. We were in our car looking on Yelp, and Chef JoseLuis personally came out to ask why we left. I explained my craving, and he said that they have EXCELLENT enchiladas on the secret menu. So, we went back in and had a WONDERFUL lunch. He told us about his history (he worked under a famous chef named Charlie Palmer) and a little about the restaurant, and we learned about a few of the awards that they have won. He said that they can accomodate any dietary restriction, and they use fresh, healthy ingredients. We are just sad that we live four hours from Mixtitos, so hopefully this review will encourage others to support this great restaurant!

I had the pleasure of dining at Mixtitos today for lunch. We were greeted immediately upon entering and escorted to our table. Chef Jose Luis came out to say hello and asked if we had any questions about the menu. We had the Chori-Queso Fondue to start, which was served table side by Chef Jose. Delicious. I had the Schnitzel Sandwich, which came with Truffle Fries. Both were seasoned perfectly. Dessert was Tres Leches Cake, which was the best Tres Leches cake I have ever had. Mixtitos is truly a rare gem. Highly recommend!

A great place with delicious food and attentive service. We came with friends on Sunday at 11 am and parked right near the door. I tried a fusion item, Japanese Shepherds Pie. I enjoyed the curried pork with rice, but next time I want to try one of gheir more traditional Mecican dishes, lkke tacos or enchiladas. Parking: There are a few parking spaces reserved for Mixtitos in front of the restaurant, and more nearby. Not sure what it is like on a busy evenng.

Fusion done right! The food is as unique as it is delightful. The choriqueso, accompanied by handmade tortillas was exquisite. The entrée, discada tacos, were delicious topped with green salsa, onions and cilantro. And the Japanese Shepards Pie, which was intriguing enough for my friend to get, a blend of unexpected flavors that hit just right. But the real delight was finally finding the best margarita in town, handcrafted beautifully and delivered by the chef himself! This is a family run business that deserves to be known! After dessert we left so full we could barely walk, the food was so good we just couldn t set the fork down. 10/10!

Service was good. Chips were odd and tough, and they charge for any extra besides the tiniest little basket. The salsas were particularly flavorless. The red only had a bit of heat and the green only tasted a bit like cilantro. The Japanese Sheppards pie was confusing. It was a curry soup with rice and a couple pickled jalapenos. Very bland. The cheesy tacos were also bland except the strong onions. Disappointing for over $60.

I am super confused by the 4.8 stars. Ill start with the good. The restaurant is very clean and the customer service is amazing. I ordered chicken nachos to go. It costs me $20 and I did not even get any chips and salsa with it. The nachos were small and the chicken had no flavor. Actually, nothing had flavor. I put on so much seasoning when I got home and it still was not good. I tried to rewarm it and the cheese barely melted. It is like that cheap cheese that you get from Aldi or the dollar store somewhere. They used super cheap ingredients and upcharge it. I have not gotten paid yet and I went there solely on this 4.8 reviews and I really wish that I had gone to mi cocina instead and gotten better tasting nachos for cheaper with chips and salsa. It was terrible and I wish that I could have my money back.

I find that in most cases it is easy to rate a restaurant one star, or five stars, as anything rating in between can be tough. However, Mixtitos should be rewarded six stars across the board. The food here is prepared with care and intent, by the same chefs, over and over again. Each dish employs an entirely different palette of ingredients. My family and I strolled in dirty and sweaty after a long day of baseball, and were tended to with nothing but joy and enthusiasm. The owner spent upwards of 20 minutes talking to us about his restaurant, the neighborhood, and finding common interests. It is often difficult to create a comfortable environment that serves food that will knock your socks off, but Jose and his family have gone above and beyond at Mixtitos.

An amazing restaurant! Chef Jose Rodriguez has created a genuinely diverse menu with his Mexican fusion influence. Since it was Taco Tuesday we gravitated to them, but we started with a lovely plate of jalapeno poppers with Crema and bacon. Service was excellent, and the cocktails from a fully stocked bar were delicious and very refreshing. While talking with our server we learned that the week before, Chef Jose won the Telemundo Top Chef award at their Cinco de Mayo celebration. After our meal the Chef came out and we learned that Mixtito s is staying where they are, in an eclectic Latin food neighborhood! Community support and word of mouth communication has made the restaurant one of the most popular in East Dallas! Be sure to get there early or be prepared to walk a ways, you ll be happy you did!

Just WOW. I wandered into Mixtitos for a quick bite to eat, truly not expecting much, but y all I left with my soul fed (as well as my belly)! I ve eaten all around the world, and this was unlike anything over ever experienced. Definitely made it to my top 3 favorite restaurants of all time! Victor was my server and he was amazingly kind and just an all-around genuine human being! My drinks stayed filled and we talked about the art of mixology and bartending (: The sangria was beautiful! Thank you, Victor, for your kindness and attention to detail! Now let s talk about the main event of this experience. THIS FOOD, Y ALL... From the homemade salsas and chips to this EXQUISITE Japanese Shepard s Pie, every part of this meal sent my tastebuds into a little heavenly paradise on earth. Jose Luis (the genius chef behind this mastery) came out with my chips and salsa initially. I m visiting from out of town, so this was my first time in and I was a little lost. I asked Jose Luis for a suggestion (I wanted something filling and with spice). He recommended the Shepard s Pie and let me know that he could make it spicy for me. I love the art of food and cooking, so I truly love moments when I get to put all of my trust into a chef s recommendations. And in this case, I m so glad that I did because Oh. My. Lanta. This was unlike anything I ve ever tasted in my life. It was perfect. Truly perfect. Thank you Jose Luis, for again, not only feeding my belly, but for feeding my soul! I will be back to try more of your awesome dishes! May God continue to bless you and your restaurant

Ive never had a bad meal here, theyve all been excellent. Had the Terra y Mar (Turf and Surf) dinner last night, it came out piping hot to the point I had to wait a bit for it to cool. The shrimp were perfectly done as was the skirt steak. The veggies balanced out the plate well and the spice wasnt overwhelming, but definitely there and had a nice slow burn that sneaks up on you. The staff was very attentive as always. My glass was never empty. Staff wasnt pushy either and didnt push hard on upsells, which is a big bonus in my book. The strip that Mixtitos is in is still up and coming with Mixtitos being the anchor that hopefully brings in some more great businesses. Hopefully more improvements can be made to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

Had an excellent dinner at Mixtitos Kitchen at Grand & Samuell last night and encourage everyone to support a locally-owned gem of an establishment in our area. There arent too many places like this, so show it some well-deserved love and add it to your restaurant rotation. The chips were fresh, hot and delicious, the green and red salsas were fantastic, service was fast, friendly and attentive, the chef-owner was gracious, and his talent and dedication deserves some neighborhood support. I had the Japanese shepherds pie, and I highly recommend this dish. I grew up eating Japanese curry, and this is an excellent rendition with some Mexican elements added--pickled jalapeño and pickled red onions--that add welcome acidity and a touch of heat. One of my dining companions ordered the $7.99 Taco Tuesday special (3 tacos, rice and beans) and enjoyed the tacos so much he ordered two more. The other ordered the cheesy chicken tacos, which came with a tantalizing griddled cheese crisp tucked inside each taco. The drinks were all excellent, and the bartender is more than happy to customize drinks for patrons. I asked for fresh jalapeño to be added to my margarita, and the immediately noticeable peppery flavor and heat showed he took care to muddle and incorporate the ingredient. My dining companions let him prepare a mezcal-based beverage of his choosing, and he delighted them with a dragonfruit sour. The ambience is classic neighborhood cantina, the bar area is cozy and appealing, the menu options are both familiar and unique, and the prices are more than reasonable. Take a break from the chains and big guys and keep this gem in the crown of East Dallas!

We ate here for lunch after visiting the Arboretum. Really fantastic meal and fun speaking with the chef about all of the food. My dad had the shepherds pie and loved it. I had the croque monsieur and it blew me away! My son had the kids grilled cheese and he loved it and had leftovers for dinner it was so big! I felt like the prices were very appropriate for the portion and the quality of the food was exceptional. The decor was nice, the restaurant was very clean. If I lived in the area Id eat here all the time. Its the perfect neighborhood restaurant! Really delicious, filling food.

My boyfriend and I decided to give Mixititos a try randomly on a Sunday afternoon, and we are so glad we did. What we originally thought was just a regular Mexican restaurant, turned out to be a Mexican/Japanese/French fusion restaurant we consider ourselves a little more cultured when it comes to food, so this was actually such a nice surprise! Don t let the fusion concept deter you, because the food here is fresh, tasty, and perfectly portioned and you ll be able to find something here for your taste buds. Trust. From the moment we stepped in, the welcoming staff set the stage for a pleasant dining experience. The Chef/Owner Jose Luis came over after being seated and served our drinks. He warmly greeted us, chatted for a bit, and offered some suggestions. As someone who works in customer service and who also has their own business, I was very impressed by this. Any good business owner knows that making a good impression the minute you interact with a new customer, sets the tone .and he definitely did that. The great service didn t stop there though because our server was also amazing. I only wish I would have gotten his name so I could shout him out in this review. Now for the food .let s start with the appetizer. We both had our daughter with us and she is a queso lover and will immediately let us know if she approves or not (you know kids can be the most harshest critic haha). She ordered the Chori-Queso Fondue. This isn t her typical type of queso she has had at other places so I was suprised when she cleared her plate by eating every bit and gave us a nod and thumbs up of approval. Next were the entrees. I took the chefs suggestion of the Schnitzel Sandwich with truffle fries. This thinly sliced and breaded tenderloin sandwich was so tasty and a good sized portion. My boyfriend took the chefs suggestion of the tacos with the servers suggestion of descada meat ( mix of steak, chorizo, sausage, bacon, pork, and onions). The order came with 3 tacos and they were filllllled with descada and the toppings. It also came with a side of rice and beans. These tacos were some of the most flavorful tacos we have had at a sit down restaurant in awhile! My daughter had the Chicken and Fries which basically was 3 breaded chicken strips with a side of truffle fries. The strips were huge and freshly battered and fried. These were definitely not your typical frozen and bagged Tyson dried chicken strip type of tenders that other restaurants will try to use haha. All in all, we had no complaints over the food at all. You can tell everything was made scratch style. The prices are certainly justified by the portion size and the quality of it all. Before leaving, the chef came back to ask us our thoughts on the food. We also chatted a bit with him on the concept of the restaurant and the menu, and how he got started. You can tell he really does take pride in the food and the restaurant. It really shows that he works hard to make each guests experience pleasant. With impeccable service and a flavorful eclectic menu, we would 10/10 recommend Mixtitos, and we definitely will be back!

Found this place on Yelp s 2023 List of Top 100 Places to Eat at in Texas. Mexican food with some Japanese influence throughout the menu! Really friendly staff too. The apps and tacos were good, but drinks and dessert were the real stars of the show. Honestly these may be the best churros I ve ever had. Warm, soft and filled with delicious cajeta! They also make a really tasty chocolate cake. The margaritas are so good. The fruit flavors really come out and I barely tasted alcohol (for me, that s a good thing). I definitely recommend trying this place! I will 100% come back again.

The staff was great. The Chef even stopped out to say hi and wish us a happy anniversary. It feels like a place where you are getting high dollar food but in a more casual/hole in the wall(but nice interior) location. I mean that as a compliment. Anyway ... Have been meaning to get here for several months and finally did this weekend... should not have waited! The high review score is totally earned. All the 5-star reviews are legit. Everything about this place is perfect! The servers were so friendly and attentive and made great suggestions for us newcomers. JoseLuis (chef/owner) even stopped by our table to chat and thank us for coming in. Even though the food is 5-star, the atmosphere is very casual and welcoming. Service is impeccable and the food was amazing. Id been looking forward to trying one of their specialties, the Japanese shepherds pie, and it didnt disappoint. We also had the pork belly appetizer and chicken tacos. Both were so good! A lot of restaurants chicken dishes are bland and dry, but the chicken in these tacos was so moist and had a delicious smoked flavor. Cant wait to come back and try many more of the unique dishes. Vegetarian options: Several vegetarian options on the menu, and the servers will work with you to find additional options. Parking: We came for a late lunch on Saturday, and there were multiple parking spaces in front. Busier times will probably be different.

My husband and I shared the shrimp al ajo before we moved on to entrees. The shrimp was incredible, a warm treat on a cool night. The bartender recommended the pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon. It was perfect, pork was juicy with a nice crust and the bacon was crispy. My hubby had carnitas tacos. He is a hard man to satisfy and he loved them. The bartender was warm and friendly. The owner and chef Jose Luis made my wife and I feel at home. He was so hospitable, kind. A true professional. Took the time to explain the menu, and even gave us a bit of a background of his family and career. It all started when the previous day we had visited a small restaurant next to his and on our way back to our vehicle my wife opened the door and took a peek of Mixtitos Kitchen. Few seconds later the owner Jose Luis comes out to greet us and invited us to his restaurant to which we accepted and this is why now Im writing a review about this great restaurant. We came back for lunch, my wife had a chile relleno and I had the shepards pie with a japanese twist. The food was great and our waiter Victor was so accomodating and was very friendly and helpful. We were so excited about our choices that I forgot to take a picture, but I did get a picture of the frozen margarita and dessert. We will definitely be coming back to try some more great dishes from his menu. I highly recommend you to visit. This is one of the unique restaurants that make Dallas a culinary destination.

I am not generous when reviewing anything. My scale is very realistic. I had the fish and shrimp soup and it was the best soup Ive hade in 15 years. It came with toasted and buttered bread, perfect combination. It was seaoned and cooked to perfection. I had them make a specialty drink and it was tasty and a work of art. Five stars on the food, even the chips, green salsa, orange salsa, and queso that you receive after you sit down was delectable. The service there goes beyond 5 stars. The Chef Jose Luis Rodriguez came over to our table to introduce himself and asks if we needed anything and if the food was to our liking. He chatted for awhile and made us feel right at home. He seems like a very genuine person and was concerned about our overall experience, which was already very positive. He spoke about live music and mixologist who come in on weekends and on Mondays they close at 1am so people in the food industry have a place to go as that is their weekend. The ambiance there was relaxing and alluring without being over powering or gimmicky to the senses. The two table seats are very small but Im sure in a place like that, space and tables are in high demand. To top of our lunch date, the chef brought us a vanilla ice cream and churro dessert, which was amazing because he did not have to do that. Above 5 stars in service. I can understand not receiving the same kind of service on a really busy day because there is just not enough people and that is why I love going to places when they are not slammed, it helps with the overall experience. I will be back and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious (understatement) food, 5 stars (really 10 star) service and apleasurable experience. Parking: If its bust, I doubt there is any parking in the front as there is about 7 spots

My husband and I were in town to visit my mother, who lives in east Texas. we decided to stop for lunch in Dallas on the way. I lived in east Dallas for many years, so I wanted to eat somewhere there. I found Mixtitos online, saw it had great reviews, so we decided to give it a try. It was wonderful! the decor / ambience is Mexican, but the food included Mexican, Japanese, and French influences. I had been craving steak tacos, so that is what I got. they were good (as were the rice and beans that accompanied them, as well as the chips and three salsas that preceded the meal); but the Japanese Shepherds Pie that my husband got was AMAZING. Crazy mix of ingredients - Rice Kar (curry sauce, pork pieces & veggies) covered with white rice topped with pickled onions and jalapeños with saltines on the side (from the menu on the website). after my husband let me taste it, I think I ate as much of it as I did my tacos!! Not only was the food delicious, but the service was really good. Victor took good care of us, he was the one who pointed us in the direction of the Japanese Shepherds Pie. SO glad he did! And: the chef - JoseLuis - stopped by our table and visited with us. He shared a bit of his background and told us more about the food and the restaurant, including that they have a bar, and live music Saturday evenings. He was kind and gracious. We are looking forward to visiting Mixtitos on our next visit to Texas, and plan to tell our friends who live here about it so they can enjoy it as well.

We waited 5 minutes, stood around, looked at the menu, and decided to give it a try anyways. We sat ourselves and a few minutes later our server came out. We ordered a bottled beer and Paloma, which we received 15 minutes later. Mind you, there was only one other couple in the entire restaurant. For our entrees, we ordered the tacos and BBQ wings. The tacos were bland and the rice was stale and crunchy. The BBQ wings were tossed in something that tasted exactly like Sweet Baby Ray s BBQ. The veggies were wilted and dull and the fries were soggy. For those two entrees and two drinks our tab was $60. Don t waste your time or money here.

I had the opportunity to visit with owner and Executive Chef, Jose, and he could not have been any nicer or generous with his time, as he walked me through the menu, and shared his passion for bringing his fusion of international cuisine to East Dallas. The food was fantastic and unique (totally in a good way). And the Spicy Margarita was a real hit among the crowd. Went here on Friday for a late lunch and returned the next day to try the Japanese breakfast along with the cafe de olla, seafood tempura app and Japanese Shepherd Pie which was a delightful balance of tastes and umami.

The guacamole was something out of this world, It was very well made and we also had Shrimp Al ajo, I don t like shrimp but THISSS WAS SOMETHING ELSE AND I RECOMMEND, if I could give it a 10 star review I would.
