Too many people with no where to sit to enjoy the live bands. (Fire code hazard). They didn t have any cups to serve drinks. Each time I visit, the quality continues to dwindle. So sad.

Came on a Friday night with some friends I won t go anywhere else for Cajun food. Period. The crab stuffed peppers are massive and actually flavored, and never frozen; made by hand. The red beans and rice FAR superior to any I have had especially in Texas, (definitely not zatarans! And the sausage was amazing) I can t pass up a REAL muffletta sandwich, EVER, so even though I was full I got one to go, just finished half of it it was a great end cap. Also got the bf the Louis from the menu, I stole his cornbread and I m glad I did because it was probably the best I ve had, ever in life. If I could stay up later I d grub the Louis plate. I should have got the cheesecake with bacon and am mad now that I didn t. All the more reason to return for etuffe and gumbo, and yes they do have crawfish!!!!!

The doorman didnt collect our fee at the door because, I suppose, he wasnt ready. So, he approached us abrasively while we were placing our order with the wonderful waitress, Taylor. We were expecting to pay, as we have been here before. But, the doormans approach was rude. The manager came and smoothed everything out. Wonderful service from everyone else, including the security. Chef D, the band, was just as wonderful. The food was decent. Not a lot of vegan options, but Taylor (the waitress) made sure I was taken care of. She offered great suggestions.

My first time here with my husband on a Thursday date night. Loved the overall vibe. The food was ok. I actually loved the chicken strips more than the fried fish. Only negative is that the last band was supposed to be up at 10 (per the advertisement) and it was well after 10 and they were still setting up. We ended up leaving because it was a work night. We may revisit on a nonwork night. Overall despite the reviews, our experience was good.

This is a cool place... but I wouldnt recommend doing their Wednesday night open mic competition thing OR ANY COMPETITION... its a farce. They advertise it like youll win $500 gig! On the small stage But actually if they dont like you theyll change the rules when you win. I know this because Ive done the contest three times. I finally won the second time and when I went to collect the prize the manager guy Geno was like if you come back next week and win again you can have the gig. Im like okay thats weird.... thats not what you said at all. Especially when they actually gave the gig to the girl who won the first time I went... But I was a good sport okay so I came back... you wanna know who won that time? A girl who works in their kitchen... AN EMPLOYEE. Im not tripping about second place, but still thats hella sketch to me. And Im not the only one they did something similar to another artist I know who won and they only gave them a contingency prize because her manager talked to them weeks later. My thing is this, if you dont plan on giving the prize you advertised you should at least have a contingency prize prepared. I go back to the freeman to see my friends perform ONLY... but I will never recommend it to anyone. I think they are shifty and I dont like that. But I do like the fries lol

We ve visited this location a few times. The performers are solid; consistently good. However, you can sit in the parking lot across the street and be well entertained because the music is deafeningly loud. I advise not to sit up front. The food is amazing but service extremely poor. I ve consistently experienced slow service (long wait), rude servers, incorrect orders or your order just never arrives. Since my fave performing group is no longer, I likely won t ever dine-in again. The food is worth takeout though. Parking: There are several paid parking lots nearby. The later you arrive, the more challenging to find parking.

Price of wine is ridiculous. $52 for a bottle I can buy at $11 in the store is crazy. Auto gratuity doesnt create a motivation for the server to bring the best service. Why should she? Shes already guaranteed 20%. Waiting til half our meal was ate before finally bringing the tartar sauce we requested when meal was brought. But again, shes guaranteed a 20% tip so why be motivated to bring customer service. We shared a dish & a bottle yet managed to come out $90 lighter. Thats just crazy. (Not including pay parking). Now the good part. The house band was amazing!

This place was a nice venue. Live music, was provided. The sound was horrible and the sound guy was ablivious, he really ruined the experience. They charge $10.00 to enter after 6pm for the live band. Every place in Dallas now charges a 20% gratuity on top of your bill. It is ridiculous to make the customer pay an automatic 20%gratuity. Another example of the business owner gauging customers to pay the staff so they dont have to.

Stopped in a few weeks ago, looked like a cool spot. But charging $17 for Espolon tequila is outrageous, even more so since in Texas its a 1.5 oz pour. Amazing food. Quality was above what I had anticipated. Quantity was more than double what I could eat, so I got to bring home the leftovers for the next day. I had the hot chick which was a spicy fried chicken breast on a bed of rice, gravy over top, side of rice and beans (which had kielbasa in it too, nice surprise) and a cornbread. Appetizer was fried pickles, which were in a tall stack, seasoned just right. Waitress was so nice and friendly, very attentive. Even gave us pointers of good thrift stores in the area. Lastly, the music... the music made the atmosphere like the icing on the cake. All around comfort... I will recommend this place to others - and Ill definitely come back when I visit Dallas again. Amazing.

We order nearly $100 worth of food for pickup and the order was wrong. I ordered Gumbo and received 3 pieces of shrimp and rice and a big piece of cornbread. What happened to the rest of the Gumbo? First the encounter with the man at the door...Very unprofessional in communication, seems not to understand his job. The waitress who help us fix the order she was a doll. 3rd I also ordered the Catfish with fries. THE WORST CATFISH EVER!! IT TASTED BURNT & STRAIGHT FISHY. They know if the oil is not right they need to change it. For nearly $100 it was a waste of money....The Gumbo had no seasoning to it bland. Ill give them another chance they might have had a bad day. But I wont order what I ordered today, Ill try something else in hopes of it being better. They know better to serve food like that to people, especially paying near $100

This was literally one of my favorite spots since I discovered it during the lockdown. It WAS... until I came to grab a quick takeout order for my last birthday, and they tried to charge my friend and I a $20 cover to order to go. When I declined, they proceeded to send the waitress out to the sidewalk to take my order... the flippin SIDEWALK. The Ella and bread pudding are good... just not good enough to get disrespected on my birthday. And to be clear, this incident occurred over 6 months ago... but the mere mention of the restaurant triggered me so badly that I had to spin the block on this review. Ill just stick to Pappadeaux from here on out... they give you free dessert on your birthday, not a sidewalk takeout menu. NOTE TO OWNERS: Actively running customers away isnt good for business.

How can you mess up bread pudding, deep sigh? Over cooked, the edges were hard and tried to disguise it with the caramel sauce. Bread pudding is suppose to be light, smooth, not dark brown. The voodoo chicken sandwich was ok, spicey but not seasoned.

I had a great time seeing so much talent in the room from all ages. I would return. As far as the food I feel that I have had better catfish. And the pieces were so small for the price. But I would try something different when I go again

Live music and vibe was AMAZING. Warm, welcoming atmosphere. Food is a hard pass. I ordered the gumbo and cornbread which ate more like a tomato based stew flavor wise. Shrimp was cooked and FLAVORED to perfection, but only got 3 pieces. Cornbread was a miss, too much baking powder. The meal was disappointing but the live music definitely ate. $10 cover. Would only come again for drinks and music.

My friend and I went here to eat after Erykah Badu s birthday bash. Didn t initially realize there was a $10 cover but there were live performances so no biggie. We get inside and sit at the bar about 12:10. We asked one of the servers going by if we could place a food order and she informed us we could but it d have to be with the bartender. By 12:20 we hadn t been able to catch his attention cuz the bar was busy so whn she came bk by again we asked for his name and we were able to ask him if we d be able to place an order. The bartender, Jared informed us he wasn t taking any more orders at the bar because he was too swamped to go back and forth to the kitchen to put orders in. We said ok and moved to the other side of the venue where the kitchen is located and waited to order there. A waiter came and took our order around 12:45 or so, two catfish baskets, boudin balls, and peppers. We listened to the musicians while we waited who were actually pretty good, however entirely too loud for the size of the venue. Around 1:15 the waiter comes bk to bring the check/close tabs for other patrons at our table so we took the chance to get an eta on our food. He informed us the order was placed but it s super busy so they re backed up and actually the kitchen wouldn t be able to take any more orders, but he got ours in just in time and he reassured us our food would be coming, it just may take a while because of how busy they were. Fast forward 10-15 minutes later he brings out our boudin balls and peppers and tells us they ve run out of catfish, but we wouldn t be charged for it. We re thinking, of course we won t be charged for the food we didn t receive lol but ok. I then ask can I get an order of wings or something else instead and he s like no they re not accepting any more orders. While I understand the kitchen closes at 2, our orders were placed well in advance and nothing else was even offered to correct or compensate, no kind of sympathy or helpfulness of any sort, and no replacement order for the order that was placed. We ate our appetizers paid the check and left. On our way out, we walked bk through the other side to their exit and we see the same waitress we had inquired with earlier about the bartender carrying two plates of catfish. I mentioned to her hey are yall out because we weren t able to get our fish order on the other side. She looks confused, stumbles out a response we couldn t really hear over the music, and that was that. Total disappointment and waste of time. May as well have just gone to whataburger.

Crab-stuffed fried jalapenos as big as my hand, Fried gator, the best sweet potato fries ever, seafood, chicken, and sausage gumbo, Aaaannnddd the blue crab dip that stole the show. The Free Man made me a happy man

The food was horrible!!! The performance on Feb 10 was very good!!! She did an awesome set. Its a small space but decent enough to watch live performances. There are 2 sides however we only sat on the soul side. The security/ door mar was very rude. I would only recommend this place for strong drinks and the live performance.

Everything was wrong. We went on Valentines Day and the building was super cold. They didn t have any heat on so whatever temperature it was outside 40°F, it was inside the building. There was a $10 cover charge. The live band was TOO loud for the size of the venue. The Cajun wings & fries were okay & hot. That gumbo was nasty. It was sent to us ice cold, we had to send it back. When they brought it back. It was hot but just not good.

My coworker and I ordered the Catfish Basket with fries and the stuffed jalapenos. The jalapenos were full of cream cheese vs crab and The fried fish was soggy. Im not sure if they used old oil or what but We both ended up with a stomach bug. Ive had food from this establishment before and had no problems. It was amazing, which tempted me to order again, but im currently curled over with a bottle of pedialyte waiting for this to pass.

10$ cover charge (2024) giving access to two rooms with live music, jazz, soul,... Delicious Hurricane. In 2024, the delicious Gumbo sizes are grossly unproportionnal to the price (the 7$ cup is 20% the size of the 14$ bowl) :-( The crawfish with the powder seasoning on top was disappointing in 2022 (my Louisiana neighbour agreed). DOOR PROBLEMS: In the jazz hall, the outside doors spring is too weak so the door doesnt close properly, leaving the customers in this weeks freezing cold. Even the staff (except the excellent barman and the waitress) doesnt seem to be aware :-( The door between the two concert rooms needs to be doubled or properly insulated. It is not OK to ruin a jazz ballad due to no soundproofing :-(

I had a disappointing experience at the Free Man restaurant in Deep Ellum, Dallas. Their food delivery failed twice, and despite prepayment, I was left empty-handed. Upon visiting the restaurant, I endured over 30 minutes of being ignored before deciding to leave. It seems they dont prioritize their paying customers. Trust me when I say it s not worth all the trouble for this place! Save your time and money! HORRIBLE!

When it comes to Cajun/southern style food cooked here in Texas, it will not live up to the home cooked standard in its native lands such as Louisiana. The hole in the wall Free Man and its Blackened Shrimp Platter have made me think otherwise for this occasion, coupled with its atmospheric music lounges that leave you with a satisfied appetite for eatery and sociable environment.

You HAVE to eat here and ask for Diamond. The food was absolutely amazing - flavorful and huge portions. The drinks are full sized, fully loaded drinks which is more than I can say for other Dallas restaurants. Diamonds service was friendly and she made sure we had everything we needed. Seriously, never wanted for anything! Thr live music added to a fun evening!
