During my freshman year of college, 1974-1975, this land was undeveloped and undesirable because of the sewer treatment plants smelly effluent. I used to come here to watch the many birds of all kinds that inhabited this little oasis of green. I also would sometimes jump my motorcycle on a makeshift trail that was here. It so happens, my chemistry teacher at Del Mar College was Pat Sutter. She also was a co- sponsor for the Bios natural science club, of which I was president. When a big billboard appeared on the land, that advertised future commercial development of the site, I became an activist. My college friends and I embarked on a campaign to block the development and get the city to make a bird sanctuary instead. I admit now, that I spray-painted, Save the Birds, over that billboard more than once. We also confiscated many survey stakes. For clarity, these actions were solely initiated by me and my classmates; the Suters would not have condoned our nighttime exploits. Pat, and her husband, Hans, were quite the environmentalists, and their informed influence was ever present in local politics as well as in the educational pursuits of their students. I come to this park every time I visit Corpus Christi, both to see my white pelican friends, and to pay homage to the Suters.

You will be surrounded by the birds and astonished by the variety. I wish I knew more about the birds and their beauty. I see trash in the water that makes my face frowning, and trails need to be paved. But certainly I would visit here again

The park does appear to have a lot to offer for nature enthusiast. However, the walking path is very eroded, therefore the trail was too muddy to walk on. Im only here for a day and I was really looking forward to seeing this place but I just couldnt get around in the mud. Hopefully they will repave the walking trail. It appears that it hasnt been maintained for years and years. On the bright side, it was easy to find and parking is great.

Ive been to many nature preserves across the country, and I have to say this is one of the most disgusting. Bottles, food wrappers, and even grocery carts litter the beach and trails. Its clear that whomever is responsible for upkeep does not care enough to actually preserve this reserve. Any beauty the reserve has is destroyed by the distinct smell of human feces permutating across the entire preserve from the waste treatment across the street. It gave both me and my guests headaches and nausea during our 45 minutes there, and I could only imagine the impact it has on the wildlife seeking refuge there. I am deeply disappointed in this location and really hope the city of Corpus Christi maintains it to ensure the health and safety of everyone who visits.

Pros: one good bird watching spot, one playground area, many picnic benches, long trails, park staff clean up trash frequently Cons: needs repairs, if you dont see birds in that one spot there are no other spots in this refuge to see them As others have said, this is in need of upkeep. The pavement is broken/missing in many places and not suitable for biking on. The boards on the boardwalk are in dire need of repair; it felt like they were close to caving in. The boardwalk is also overgrown with tall grass/plants that rise over the railing. The bird watching spot was crowded when I went, and there really werent any birds to see. I tried finding another place in the refuge to see birds, but there isnt one. Getting to see the Mexican olive tree drop some fruit and all the white butterflies were neat though. Playground: The playground os all the way at the other end. Toilets: There are none. I walked the entire loop, including down to the playground area, and didnt see any bathrooms anywhere. Picnic area: There are multiple tables in one area that has a playground. There is also another table near the start of the trail (where the sign is, along the right trail); that one is covered.

Great place for birdwatching at sunrise and sunset. We stop by several times every year Some security concerns: vandalized. Some members of the resident human population are grumpy. One visit at mid-day in September 2021, SOMETHING was approaching me from the bushes, making a lot of noise, but wouldnt answer when i asked who was there. Kept coming: loudly. Whatever it was, it was BIG. If not a person, it must have been hog, javelina, deer, or badger, and was not afraid of people. Go with a group, preferably with someone trained in self defence.

This park is in serious need of renovation. Signage, boardwalk, trails, all in great need of repair. We were there about 11 a.m. Noticed clearly that occupants of the 4-5 other vehicles were not interested at all in legitimate nature activities. Walked to the end of one trail but left quickly when we saw the suspicious activity of the other people.

Bring some loose leaf tobacco as a sign of respect to the earth to put on the drum, and a camping chair to sit around the circle with everyone. Deeply moving.
