About the Company
rating: 4.6
Minutes south of Abilene, nestled in picturesque Buffalo Gap, is an authentic historic village. Not a replica, but actual furnished buildings from the 1870s - 1920s representing the last 50 years of the West Texas frontier. The buildings in the Buffalo Gap Historic Village are an educational and fascinating mix. They include the original county courthouse, a log cabin, the first lumber house in the county, schoolhouse, train depot, filling station, bank, doctor’s office, barbershop, print shop, chapel and others that were moved from their original West Texas locations to showcase how the frontier developed over time. Each building is filled with furniture and artifacts to help visitors today visualize and experience life in an earlier time.

I love historical places. I love to learn everything about history. This place has it. I am giving it 3 stars because it s really not wheelchair friendly. I have stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. I have lost my right lung so I can t walk very far. I need my chair to get around. Some of these buildings are accessible to wheelchairs but others are not. Also to get to each building you have to navigate through gravel. Unfortunately my chair kept getting stuck in the gravel and I have a motorized chair. So I had to use power to get unstuck. The gravel is basically lots of sharp rocks it did shred one of my back tires. So unfortunately I wouldn t call this place wheelchair friendly for those reasons. If I went back I would take my standard wheelchair it probably would do much better than the motorized. It s unfortunate because it is a lovely place.

Historical village is a must see. I personally met a Baptist Minister whose Father and Grandfather gave their very first sermon in this very church. This info in this village is far greater than many historical sites we have visited across the globe. Seriously. Although it is self-guided, it has more info at hand than any tour guide has ever given us.

Neat little gem nestled in Buffalo Gap. The buildings give you a snapshot of what things were like in Taylor County at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The only downfall was the amount of dust on the furnishings/antiques and on the glass display cases. There was so much dust on the display cases that people had written things in the dust which really detracted from the treasures contained within.

I had high expectations. I was a bit disappointed with the condition of the buildings and artifacts. There was a lot of dust, no lights on in most buildings and a lot of empty display cases. We will go again as I think its important to understand the history of our community but I was a bit disappointed. I also think having live tours would be better than self tours.

We really enjoyed this stop! We have ancestors who were part of the founding of Buffalo Gap,TX, so this was so neat to see and take the kids to! A lot of neat history, I love that things are not barred off so children do get a full experience (parents be responsible!) Only thing I would say a bit negative, it was extremely dusty, spider webs, mice droppings... things could be kept up a lot better.

Such a great place. My name is Roger Browning and I am the author of The Reckoning of Rance, that is out on amazon right now. Its a novel about a dysfunctional family of inheritance, its setting that of a Texas ranch. It might not be a story for all, but I am sure that it is a story for most and I so enjoyed the writing of this one as I hope you enjoy reading it more. I am telling you this in relation to the museum, because the writing of the book brought me here. I was on a book signing tour in the area when it was recommended as a place to see. They were right. We drove out, took time for its story. Surveyed the old bullet holes to its fortress walls and enjoyed the cool of the day, even taking in a picnic there while tossing a few loops over the head of a roping dummy that sat the old museums back. We took in the boardwalk store front where I happily browsed the other Texas writers books, and thought about one day my book sitting alongside them there as well. I took a few books there that day, along with a soda pop, some jerky and a desert snack as well. We really enjoyed our time spent and it is well worth the slow down and visit I feel. Take time to hear its story. Imagine the surrounding village at a time it once alive then and there. and enjoy your time in the store and buy youself a good a souvenir as well. My name is Roger Browning and my book is The Reckoning of Rance.

This used to be a 5* museum, but has obviously gone downhill every since it became the Taylor County History Center. There used to be an audio guide that provided an excellent explanation of the various exhibits. Gone! There used to be an explanation in the Doctors Office of the Treatment Room. Gone! The Wagon Barn used to be open. Closed! None of the buildings that are open have any kind of lighting in them, so theyre very dark, and its hard to see what IS in them. I dont know if the original Buffalo Gap State Historic Park had to sell out because they were going bankrupt or not, but the result is a shadow of its former self. Shame on You!!! I wont be back.

There are about 10 building including a bank, post office, jail, court house, blacksmith, and gas station on 4 acres. There is a covered picnic area and small play ground. This site is part of Abilenes Round Up pass (available at the Abilene visitor center) making it a fun cheap activity.

I had heard of Buffalo Gap all my life, but had never visited. My dads family had reunions here for at least 45 years, but they ceased when my great-aunt was no longer able to be the organizer. I think the museum has done a very good job of representing early Taylor County history. My great grandparents homesteaded near Ovalo about 1906, so of course that early history is of interest to me. I might visit again, but on a less windy and cold day!
