We arrived on a Friday night, I wanted to enjoy the weather outside on the deck, but everything was full. It was a bunch of couples at four top tables so there wasn t really anywhere for people to sit due to lack of seating. Looks the same as I did with the previous owners, but the food was lacking, even the chips were stale, salsa runny, and queso lukewarm. Not that great of an experience this time

Shrimp pipeline enchilada looked like a big portion but it basically had just 5 tiny shrimps loaded with extreme amount of cheese rolled in a burrito The worst enchilada in my experience, must avoid. Not worth the $.

Service was ok. Took maybe 10 minutes for our server to come after being seated, even though the restaurant was not busy. I ordered the bbq chicken tacos, that came with two tacos, rice and refried beans. The tacos consisted of chicken swimming in barbecue sauce. The rice tasted bland and the beans were cold. I couldn t finish my food. Would never come back.

No restaurant better represents the phrase hit or miss . Hula Hut has always been one of my all time favorite restaurants in Austin, but it has changed so much over the years that I find myself going less and less. The service and food are inconsistent but when both hit, you can have a great meal! I think ownership or management changed recently, so maybe consistency will improve. If you ve never been, you should go!

I attempted to call in my order, but no one answered, so I drove to the restaurant and placed a to-go order in person instead. I requested chips and salsa, along with jalapeño ranch. I ordered the coconut shrimp and steak tubular tacos. Unfortunately, when I got home, there was no salsa, the tubular taco was cold, with very small portions of beans and rice, and the coconut shrimp were tiny and tasted burnt because the frying oil was clearly old. It s frustrating that they expect a 20% gratuity for basically zero service and subpar food. I ll be including photos. I know Hula Hut is under new management, but this is not an improvement.

This is a fairly busy joint. The food is amazing. Customer service is great but a little slow due to how busy they are. They kinda seem short staffed when it comes to servers. Chips and hot salsa are amazing. The view out on the bar is amazing. Right on the Colorado River. Happy Eats!!

Why is the food all so bad? Its like they dont even try because they know people will come anyway just for the view and booze. I come here a lot after boating and never have good service either. We always have to flag someone down to ask for basics like salt and silverware. The servers basically drop your plates off and run away. But if you need something in your stomach and want to sit by the water, its not a terrible place to spend an hour on a nice day. Chips and queso are typically a safe, hard to get that wrong. Skip the burgers (dry flavorless) and the burritos (smothered in condensed cream of chicken soup).

It was labor day weekend, we sat on a table on the outdoor patio. We couldnt get anyone to clean the table. No server in sight, no manager in sight. The people already eating were complaining their waiter disappeared, I watched people having to ask the busy bartender for things. It was ridiculous, we got up and left. Later was told by a friend who lives in Austin that Hula Hut is a badly managed tourist trap.

September 2024 It has been some time since we have dined at the Hula Hut. Unlike arriving when the party is happening we got here when they just opened at 11:00 AM during the week. They have a store to purchase merchandise as you enter. We were nicely welcomed in and were seated by a window with a view of Lake Austin. There was a lot of seating available inside, on a pier (covered), on the deck, and a covered lounge area. The place was very Hawaiian festive with a shark sandpit for the little bites. One problem was parking where even this early seemed like all the parking spots were taken. There is a coffee shop next door so perhaps the reason why. I ordered the Montego Bay Shrimp Tacos for I selected grilled shrimp with shredded red cabbage, fresh cilantro & Jalapeño-Lime Sauce in homemade corn tortillas. Our server was super cool. We had ships and two types of salsa to snack on while we waited. The chips & salsas were good not too spicy. Soon our food arrived and presented very nicely. The two shrimp tacos tasted very good and with nice flavor. It felt like a healthy meal. It did come with Mexican rice and refried beans. I enjoyed it very much and overall had a great experience.

Ive been going to hula hut since 2012 and ive recommended the restaurant to many, many people for what used to be delicious food, excellent service and atmosphere but I hadnt been there since around April of 2024, I dont know whats changed but the service has gone to hell, our server today had to be searched for several times, a couple of times reminded to bring some items, her excuse everytime was oh they didnt bring it yet I mean we asked you for basic things, you should confirm if we ever received it, food kept getting cold because were waiting for more tortillas and or lettuce, the food just didnt taste as good as it used to either, may or may not be because it was getting cold while we were trying to figure out when the tortillas and lettuce is coming, in the past wed see several staff members in and out of dining area but seems theyve either cut down or nobodys wanting to work because kinda had to hunt them down for service. Something has changed in the last few months, I dont know if Ill be recommending and or going there again after tonights experience.

Hula Hut has earned a well-deserved spot on my list of favorite Austin restaurants. The Hawaiian-inspired atmosphere, from the decor to the menu, creates a truly immersive experience. I tried the Hawaiian BBQ pork sandwich, and it was fantastic. The combination of flavors, including the pineapple, was perfectly balanced. Best food I have ever eaten! The fried avocado chicken is so incredibly amazing. My daughter loved the veggie tubular taco, which was basically a burrito. My son loved the BBQ chicken tacos. We also had mango jalapeño cheese quesadilla, which was amazing. They have two different types of salsa. They also have an outside bar area for adults, only. They did have a broken elevator so they apologized to me (as I am in a wheelchair) and then walked us around the back, which was still do-able. They have turtles close by in the lake, as well. The view, vibe, music, and food was all amazing. I cant believe we paid $88 to be completely filled up and to leave with 3 huge to-go boxed. I usually never ever leave food but the portions were so large and savory. Highly recommend. Great view, too! Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, there is.

Ive been eating at Hula Hut for over 20 years. Back then, the food was fantastic, drinks were great, I really never had one complaint. Over the years, its just been a steady fall, sadly, since its a really nice location. Ive had bad experiences, mainly with the food, and thought Ill give them one more chance, which I did, and another bad experienced followed. I did that 3-4 times, shame on me. The last visit was the last straw. I took some out of town guests there, and the food was flat out horrible, for all of us. The fish tacos had ZERO flavor, the chili rubbed salmon tacos had ZERO flavor. The tubular taco, you guessed it, ZERO flavor. Typically the fish tacos have creamy jalapeno sauce on it, even that was flavorless, and lacking. Both the drinks and service were bad as well. And lastly, to top it all off, the queso, one thing that should be really hard to mess up, was messed up. I wont make the mistake again.

(Ill delete the lettuce and onions, add mayo, BBQ sauce, and extra tomatoes next time) Overall, pretty good burger. (I wanted to try it their way first) Fries nothing special. Hula Hut manager (Nathan) kicked my friend out of the restaurant due to not liking her from the past causing an embarrassing immature conflict in broad daylight after we brought a big group in off the boat. Would not allow us to reason with him in anyway to solve the issue or allow us to sit down and eat and threatened to call police on her because of the fact that he didn t like her from an old workplace disagreement and had absolutely no reason to give as to why we couldn t both be mature as a manager business should come before any personal conflicts Completely absurd and shameful way to run an establishment this place has gone way down hill in customer service and I am truly disappointed in the supposed GM Nathan s actions that day.

Good fish flavor and pecan crust. I had the chicken & guacamole tubular taco. Basically, its a large burrito with grilled chicken in a very tender and fresh tortilla with a Monterey jack and herbed cream cheese sauce with guajillio. Really good! The rice and beans were also well seasoned and enjoyable. The chips were good, but the salsa had way too much cilantro and just a touch to hot. The service was friendly and helpful. Overall, highly recommended two thumbs-up
