Uptown Sports Club

About the Company

rating: 4.6

In 1949, Uptown Sports Club opened as a neighborhood spot for locals on the Eastside to drink, bet, watch the game and hold court. Uptown Sports Club has found its second life thanks to Aaron Franklin and a handful of friends united by their deep love for Austin. Same building. Same neighborhood. Same soul. Just thoughtfully reimagined for the East Austin of today. Uptown is your home base for great food, coffee, cocktails and community. We keep East Austin hours. Open early for coffee & pastries, serving up a Texan take on Louisiana homestyle brasserie fare and slinging classic cocktails from lunchtime ’til late-night. No rush. No fuss. Come as you are daily or nightly.

My wife and I went for dinner and I have to say we were extremely underwhelmed and disappointed. The food was definitely forgettable and over priced. We started with the smoked trout dip which came with a bag of Zapp s chips in the bag, this is an $18 appetizer mind you. It came up looking like my mom s tuna salad and not tasting much better. Then there was my Roast Beef sandwich, which was even wetter than the trout dip. It was messy and bland. My wife got the burger which she said was nothing special. The cocktails were sub $20 and they were out of the the ingredients for the first two I wanted. I tried the mezcal cocktail and it honestly tasted like a watered down margarita. We won t be going back.

Love New Orleans and was excited to try this place but was left feeling lack luster. The atmosphere was definitely a vibe and the staff were pleasant, but the food was just ok. They were out of banana bread and had some items missing like the roast beef sandwich at the time we went that maybe are only a weekday thing? My friend had the shrimp poboy and fries and I had the fried chicken plate- chicken and potato salad were good but ended up with 2 small wings and more potato salad on my plate than meat on my chicken. We also had 2 drinks that were tasty. Overall, if you re just there to have a drink and take in the atmosphere it s fun but I wouldn t go out of my way to eat here again. Wish the food was better- my friend and I agreed our dishes weren t anything to write home about. Might give it a shot again with another dish but definitely not the fried chicken with 2 wings and no spice. Also, made a reservation but a sign said seat yourself when we walked in so a little confusing but better to have the reservation made I guess.

Lovely ambiance with French style doors and great sunlight coming through windows. Friendly, fast service. The food is incredibly mediocre though. I really want to like this place and have been multiple times trying to convince myself the food is good. The food isn t bad, but it s surprisingly bland. If you re labeling yourself a New Orleans style restaurant, you have to bring the flavor. Gumbo - needs salt Raw oysters - had shell bits in it Grilled oysters - flavorless Shrimp poboy- needs flavor Sundae - good but small Nothing is terrible, but nothing makes me want to come back or bring people here to eat.

While in NC we went to a brewery and told the bartender we were visiting from TX. A young lady at the bar next to us perked up and said she just moved there from Austin. She said when we get back we have to go to Uptown Sports Club as food is fantastic and the Owner and staff are great. Madison worked there when this first opened. Flying back this was our first stop. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent and our server, Kenneth, not only provided excellent service but was fun to banter with. The breakfast plate was delicious and my Bloody Mary was top notch! Recommend in a heartbeat.

I am from New Orleans born and raised! THIS is hands down the BEST place I ve been to in Texas in all 13+ years here. Visited various cities in Texas. This place literally reminds me of the heart of New Orleans food and what it was before Katrina. The atmosphere and hospitality was unbeatable. I cried because the food was so good. Being away from the city for a while and eating here made my inner child glow. The gumbo was fresh, had the right flavors. My Po-Boy was good and had authentic French bread from New Orleans. My dessert was spectacular! Not too heavy but sweet and rich. I had the bread pudding for dessert. Ahhhh man it was top tier. For Austin, I must say I was impressed. My cocktail hit the spot as well. My server added a cherry on the cake! Awesome experience. Sultry and sweet.

Service was slow, most of the servers walked around looking like they d rather be somewhere else and it was quiet! Kitchen staff kept coming out to the bar with their mouth full, chewing. One team member came out eating whilst carrying a bowl of food for someone. Most of food was average and the shrimp tasted like some sort of cleaning fluid had passed through it. Fries were overcooked in old oil. The atmosphere / vibe is cool and its in a great spot but wow, employees are really demotivated here and the limited, basic menu delivers food that is way below average. I wonder how many people return to dine again or is it a line of new people as the place is new (ish) and its in a cool part of town. Saturday night and we got a walk in tells me what I need to know. Sorry guys, so many awesome places close by for dinner.

The look and vibe of the restaurant are very cool although it was crazy loud when we were there both from the music and everyone yelling over the music. I love Franklin BBQ and I love Loro so I assumed this would be another excellent restaurant but the food was really just ok. We love going to New Orleans and we love gumbo (our favorite is at Her Saint) but this aint it. Red beans and rice were fine but not better than Popeyes. My shrimp po boy was actually good but $16.50 for 4 shrimp and it ought to be! We also got the smoked trout dip on the advice of the waiter which was, again, totally skippable. Most of the food was mediocre and not downright bad but for the price and in a city with so much actually good food who has the time? Ultimately worth coming in to grab a cocktail and see what theyve done with the place but I would not eat a meal here.

We stopped in and were able to find seats at the bar where we chatted with Wally during our visit. While we dined on our shrimp po boys, we enjoyed the porch pounder, uptown and desert sunrise drinks. I have not had a truly good and authentic po boy outside of the N-O in a while and I have to say that they hit it out of the park! The atmosphere was lively and the staff were all very nice and accommodating. We had a great time and are looking forward to going back.

The poboys hit the spot - shrimp, fried green tomato, and hot roast beef - all delicious. Yes, I had friends to share...come on now! The trout dip was excellent! Pro tip - get it with the green Cajun Dill Tators bag of Zapps instead of regular. Service was great, drinks were great. The only slight negative was the gumbo, while very tasty, was more rice than gumbo. Extra points for Crystal hot sauce though!

Uptown has fantastic sandwiches - their Shrimp Poboy is outstanding, and Ill be back. Highlights: shrimp poboy and roast pork sando were both excellent. Fries were great. Smoked trout dip was decent. Lowlights: the gumbo was not good. Im spoiled and biased - my family is from Louisiana. Im not sure if they burned the roux or something else, but it had a distinct flavor profile and none of us could finish it. The brownie dessert was also surprisingly bad - just a basic brownie with a scoop of ice cream and a few peanuts for $9. It also took 20m to arrive due to a kitchen mistake, but our waitress made up for it. Food delivery was kind of a mess - multiple items delivered to the wrong tables. Not a big deal though and the service was otherwise very pleasant.

The bad: We ordered gumbo, a fried oyster poboy, and a surf and turf poboy. The Gumbo was flavorful but finished very salty, making it difficult to eat. Both poboys were incredibly sour, they were far too heavy on the vinegar. We didn t finish either of the sandwiches, which was disappointing at the $16-20 per sandwich price point.

So-so vibe, terrible food. I had been waiting for the hype to die down a bit before trying this place and finally headed in for dinner on Wednesday, I wish I hadnt bothered. I arrived early and headed to the bar for a drink while I waited for my party to arrive. The bar staff were efficent but not particularly freindly, tap beers were limited so I ended up with a can but had to request a glass. When my party arrived we sat in a booth and ordered food. The gumbo was decent, certainly not lifechanging, but decent. The shrimp coctail was very disapointing, the shrimps tasted weird, they had a chemical taste to them and the texture was off, they were mushy rather than firm. The steak poboy was just okay, which is not what we were expecting from a restaurant owned by Aaron Franklin. However, the shrimp poboy was straight up inedible. It was cold in the middle and the shrimp had that weird chemical taste again (like they had been washed in disinfectant). I took one bite and put it aside. The wait staff didnt even comment on the amount of uneaten food left at the end of the meal, they were pretty disinterested. As a bonus the party in the booth next to us were fairly animated and the the back of the booth seat is thin and a little lose so we were getting pretty seriously bashed around during the whole meal. Im a big fand of Franklins and Loro but this place? I wont be back. There are foodtrucks in Austin that offer far, far superior Louisiana Creole cuisine without the attitude.

The atmosphere is rock solid, as the interior is a breath of fresh air in Austin. It combines a bit of throwback/heritage vibe and works with, not against the building it resides in. The cocktails were excellent and the Aaron Franklin touch is evident in all food options. Get there early for happy hour.

/3 Chill atmosphere. Service was great and the dishes came out fast. Dog friendly on the patio. Oysters were great. The roast beef po boy was delicious. Grab an uptown burger but not a downtown burger. Better flavor I think. Oh and Happy hour is where it s at if you want discounts on oysters and on some bevies. Wheelchair accessibility: Plenty of it.

I highly recommend this place!! Our server Kenneth hooked us up. I got scammed out of some tickets for a concert my husband and I were supposed to see. We came to this place to have some drinks and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was very chill and relaxing, the drinks were on point and the smoked trout appetizer was phenomenal!! If your server is anything like Kenneth than you are in for an amazing time!!

Great hours. Great vibe. Great service. Solid food. I feel like my dietary restrictions impacted my food profiles. I think the crab Louie would be amazing if I ate it with the Zapp potato chips it came with - but I didn t have a low carb counter balance to give the salt, the crunch, the oil - all that would have played great against the vinegar(?) flavor. I didn t get that offset the dish was designed to have. The cappuccino with heavy whipping cream was yummy. The service was wonderful. The place feels wonderful simply to be in. It is very laid back, but upscale laid back? I want to come back for breakfast. Vegetarian options: There is more for vegetarians options for pescatarians. Not much for vegans. Dietary restrictions: They are fine for keto and paleo. Possible Cris contamination for gluten free Parking: Paid street or paid parking. It s tough in this area. Great spot to use ride share to and from. Kid-friendliness: It is mainly an upscale bar and coffee spot - but kids would be fine here. Wheelchair accessibility: Didn t see bathroom. Restaurant was super accessible

*FOOD POISONING* Dined there about an hour ago and within 5 minutes of leaving I was vomiting... been on and off for the past hour. I live within a 10 minute walk and it took my boyfriend and I over 30 minutes to get home with stops to ............... you get it. Upon arrival we were told to seat ourselves, so we did. The booth that we chose was not wiped down from the last guests, so we requested it to be cleaned. After waiting 15 minutes with the table still dirty, no menus, or drinks, we saw it best to move to the bar to eat. Upon sitting at the bar we were greeted with waters, menus, and quick service. I ordered the trout dip as an appetizer and the house salad. This was undoubtedly the worst salad Ive ever had in my life. The trout dip was abhorrently pungent with a strong taste of dill and onion, (I grew up eating fresh seafood on the Florida Panhandle and have been going to New Orleans my entire life) so I feel like I know good seafood, and regretfully this dip was NOT it. The salad arrived and tasted as unappealing as it looked visually... very watery, pungent, yet bland and just plain gross. I kindly asked the server for a different dressing in hopes of making it taste better, and she happily got the kitchen to remake the salad with ranch. When the salad came out another 10 minutes later, it was just as watery as before, yet this time it was drenched in ranch AND the kitchen coated it in dill to give it more flavor Im guessing? All in all Im starving at this point so I attempt to eat about half of it (Its very small) before being too put off by the dish to continue. The server quickly took our plates and presented the bill to my boyfriend so we exited. About 2 minutes down the road the pungent-dill-stinky-taste just wont go away and I realize that Im about to puke - then the rest is history... Obviously, we will not be dining here again. To top it off, my boyfriend immediately had the opposite problem as me (as above so below) upon getting home. 1 nice thing : The atmosphere was cozy and felt vintage in the cool Austin way as you would expect on the East Side. I have heard that they put a lot of work into the atmosphere and the vibes are there, yet unfortunately, the kitchen severely missed the mark with the food.

My boss and I met a consultant for a networking HH around 4:30pm. We had a table inside with fun and friendly service. The staff were genuinely happy to be there. Between the 3 of us we had the Negroni, the old fashioned and the gin cocktail. We also had three sandwiches. I looooved the burger and fries. Highly recommend

Cajun fare in a low key setting on 6th street. Good cocktails and beer selection. Very delicious shrimp poBoy (although $16), that has a very nice tang to it (vinegar? Or pickles? Very fire). Gumbo is good as well, although not grandma tier.. Still worth grabbing a bowl. 4.5 / 5.0

Uptown Sports Club Had a fantastic time here and loved the food sooo much. Split a couple of sandwiches with friends and was in heaven. The sports club sandwich was just amazing - so flavorful and filling. I will 100% be back for this sandwich. The shrimp sammy was also so good but the sauce was a bit more vinegary which made it slightly less comforting - still very good. We also had the gumbo and I wasn t the biggest fan of this version , I will try another side the next time I m here. The atmosphere is also just so fun and clean and nice - loved this so much. 100% will be back!
