Ms Carmen is an austin legend. The best atmosphere on east sixth, argue with a wall. There s no topping this original, Latino, Mexican woman-owned establishment. Seriously such great humble people. Dog friendly, kids encouraged, right off the bus line with tons of parking in front and rear. Dietary restrictions: Chef Carmen is very accommodating and can meet any needs. I have celiac disease myself and always taken care of here the best tortilla soup margaritas and Horchata. Parking: Two hours free comped parking on the huge lot of tamales house east lots of parking in the rear next to yellow jacket however, yellow jacket does tow tons of retail and residential complex. Parking garage is in the area right off of the bus line. Kid-friendliness: All are welcome kids encouraged tons of fun Mexican novel items to look at and appreciate culture Wheelchair accessibility: Hardly any steps tons of ramps all accessible I am physically disabled myself and have a great time getting around this very easily navigable restaurant, bar, and patio.

Its hard to find good Mexican food in Austin, but this is one place that does it right. You wouldnt expect Sixth Street to be a source of such quality and very fast service! The tamales are enormous and very well made. The masa is sure to remind you of a Mexican home, but the cocinita taco with aged pork is absolutely no slouch, either! Sit inside for live music, or outside for the relaxing patio.

We came here with 11 ladies for dinner during a bachelorette weekend in Austin. The staff were friendly and accommodating, the size of a party didn t daunt them and they were super quick to get us seated. The pitchers of margaritas were spot on (complete with options for salting the rims of the glasses (no salt, salt, or spicy salt - highly recommend the spicy salt)). The food was the highlight of the entire trip, we are still raving about it. I had the vegan enchiladas, they were to die for!! The other folks in the group were raving about the quaso and chips. Service was super friendly and also surprisingly quick! There are so many great food options Austin, but I will make a point of coming back here next time no matter what.

Our family visited Tamale House East on a Saturday early afternoon and were met by Carmen, who was friendly, responsive and wonderful throughout our dining experience! Tamale House East includes a florally beautiful outside seating area which I was told will, some time in the near future, have misters to cool diners. The atmosphere, indoor and outside, is relaxed and pleasant. We were started off with complimentary Chips and Salsa. The Guacamole was a dream, a it tasted freshly made. We ordered the Mushroom Spinach Enchiladas, the Vegi Guac Tacos, the Tamale Plate (with Pork - choice of Pork or Chicken) and the Cochinita Pibil. We also had Mole, Avocado Slices and Spanish Rice on the side (though the Mushroom Enchiladas come with Spanish Rice). I drank a Cranberry Juice and my 3 family members enjoyed a pitcher of Prickly Pear Margarita. All of the food was well- presented, tasty and well seasoned. The Mole was exceptional, with well-balanced notes of chocolate and spice. (This description does not do justice to the rich but not overpowering flavor of the Mole.) There is a large parking lot outside of Tamale House East with 2 Hours of free parking. Tamale House East is a wonderful place to enjoy great Mexican food. We will return and highly recommend that everyone enjoy this restaurant. Vegetarian options: Too many to name.

Have been here a number of times, both for dine in and takeout. It never fails to satisfy! The atmosphere is welcoming, the conservatory is cozy, and the patio is gorgeous with plenty of cacti and flowers. I never leave here without getting SOMETHING with mole - even convinced everyone at the table to get some mole and none were disappointed. My wife, a vegetarian, is often torn between what to order. Theres no dedication vegetarian menu, but there are a number of great veggie options for those who dont eat meat. The margaritas are great too, frozen, on the rocks, or mezcal. Our personal favorite is prickly pear. My parents are in town visiting and I took them here today. When my dad mistakenly ordered me the Cochinita Pibil taco instead of the plate, the server picked up on it and brought rice & beans without me even mentioning anything. Incredible attentiveness and the service was above-and-beyond! Vegetarian options: No dedicated vegetarian menu, but theres many veggie options. Mushroom & spinach enchiladas, chipotle migas, bean & cheese tamales, veggie vegan plate, etc. Parking: Spacious parking lot out front with free 2hr validation if youre eating there.

Loved this place! Fabulous food, we were six people so tried a lot of things. Diane was amazing-there was so much to choose from that she really helped us figure it out. Great Mescal Margarita pitchers too. We could have stayed all evening. Love the legacy of the three generations of women owning and running the place too, and lovely to support that. Take a look at Diane s skin! So youthful, maybe we should all be eating daily Tamales! Oh, lastly, really reasonably priced which was a pleasant surprise.

The place and atmosphere are very warm and inviting. The lady that took our order was very helpful and the lady that brought our food was very nice, too. The food, though, was very disappointing. One dish was a vegetarian tamale with green salsa and the other dish was a chicken tamale with green salsa. Both tamales were on the heavy side in terms of batter. The chicken in mine was very dry and both tamales lacked taste on their own. The salsa that accompanied both dishes were not fresh and bubbly. We had ordered a bean, cheese, and jalapeño tamale to share as well, but sadly it only had beans inside. Heavy on the batter and no taste. The batter might have been old too. It might just have been those dishes that came out bad because the group next to us enjoyed theirs, but I don t think we ll be giving this another try. Parking: Onsite, free parking

I ve eaten from Tamale House 2 times. Both of those times, my tamales had plastic cooked inside the tamale. First time I ordered a dozen to freeze and the first one I ate I found a bunch of plastic. I opened up another and same thing. I did call them to let them know and was told this was a prep issue but was assured it was a one time thing with that specific batch of tamales. Fast forward to 10 months later, where I ordered 2 tamales to go (yesterday). I was shocked to AGAIN find plastic cooked inside the tamale as I was almost finished with the second. This is now pretty concerning to me and should be addressed to the staff since this is a food safety issue. I ve attached screenshots with the dates showing when these pictures took place. I am Mexican and it s hard to find delicious tamales in the US, and the tamales here taste like home, but I m really weirded out by the plastic I keep finding INSIDE the tamales!! Be careful and inspect your tamales closely.

I was visiting Austin for a few days and looked up nearby restaurants for something special. The QR ordering had me a little wary, but I m happy that I went for the garden and excellent food reported in the reviews As a solo diner, it s not always easy to feel comfortable in a restaurant. But shortly after my arrival a wonderful lady (later told me she was the owner) explained their menu options and I decided to order her favorite chicken tamale with green salsa It was by far the best tamale I ve ever had and it is not hyperbole to say I could taste the love that went into its creation If you have an opportunity to visit this fine establishment you will not be disappointed with the food or service. The food was great, I had a Moms Migas and Queso which was a gently scrambled eggs with cheese on top of crispy taco pieces served with refried beans and a non-spicy pico de gallo. It was delicious. The way the food was served was eye opening a perfect for a technology hub like Austin. There were five at the table, two couple and me. Each couple and me scanned the QR code on the table with our cell phones to get the menu, nothing different than many other places during and after Covid. But then we scrolled down the menu and choose what we wanted to eat and drink, enter a tip and a credit card number then wait for your order to be delivered to your table. In our case we sent three orders to the kitchen, one for each couple and one for me. The use of technology is great, but it does beg the question, Why are we requested to give a tip when no service has yet been rendered. Perhaps Im old fashioned (or just old) but I thought a tip was given for service received, and is given after the meal, not before. That may INCLUDE carrying plates from the kitchen to the table, but there is a lot more to good service. This practice of requesting a tip before any service is given leaves a bad taste. It is akin to a voluntary chair tax and will eventually lead to lower income for the wait staff as people stop paying the tax. Parking: free parking if you eat at the restaurant, but you must tell them.

Stopped in this morning because we were craving the salsa and the migas from the old location on Airport. This place has really gone down hill - perhaps due to COVID and a lack of recovery. You have to do some stupid check in and validation on your phone to park in the lot, no one speaks to you, you order off your phone completely and a guy who doesnt speak brings your food out. Migas were loaded with too many tortillas and were a bit mealy in texture. The salsa isnt out to grab on your own anymore, so they bring you a small amount with the food (e.g. not enough). It also wasnt as good as on previous visits - tasted like they added too much onion or garlic. I suspect they are able to stay in business solely based on revenue from the really big parking lot for evenings/nights. Its about the only place left to park down here, but be aware, it appears to be $35 for 3 hours if you pay. Anyway, scratching this off my list to ever visit again. Do yourself a favor and try Veracruz or even Ciscos instead. The plants and patio are cute though if you insist on getting mediocre food.

The most recent visit we had the owner herself waiting & doting on us. She overheard me telling my party about the Tamale House on Airport. Wonderful atmosphere inside and out! Unfortunately I cant say the same for the food. I was quite disappointed! We had our daughter for the weekend and she really was craving some tamales on a whim and Tamale House came to mind. Mind you, we have never eaten here until yesterday. I spent way to much money for the food that was put in front of us. My husband and I are amazing cooks, and really pay attention to detail when we go out to restaurants. There plates had no presentation..no color!!! We started with the queso..I was very confused by the flavor and texture. My Daughter and I ordered a pork Tamale and a bean and cheese tamale.. the flavor of the Masa for the tamale was pretty good, the fillings need attention to flavor. My husband got the Fajita plate....not to good...the plate was super hot but the rice beans and fajitas on the plate were lukewarm at best. The best tasing things we had were their Fresh Chips and salsa. I wish I could say I would return with my familia, but you all definitely need help with the food on your menu. Perhaps a revamp on your plates, a new chef who takes pride in cooking and making your plates look appetizing .We had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Valera yesterday and just realized she was the owner, she is super super sweet and came to our table several times to ask how we were doing. She has left a lasting impression on me and I truly believe she deserves better from her familias restaurant that they have worked so hard to keep alive. You all have the potential to be amazing, and have a gem in east Austin. I would love for it to taste impeccable, see it flourish, and packed with people!! YOU ALL DESERVE IT!! ~Monica Salas

Well they are very large so I thought it was maybe worth it until I ate them and they are all masa and had the smallest amount of meat. They had the same amount of meat as a normal sized tamale but the about 4 or 5 times the amount of masa. Had good flavor if you like to just eat Masa. I would not recommend wasting the money on their tamales.

The tamales here are ridiculously large which would be cool if they had a good proportion of masa to filling but they don t. They give you a WHOLE LOT of masa, and just a thin sliver of filling. (See pictures). But if you like masa, it tasted okay

$82 with tip for 2 tamale plates, 2 margs, and chips and salsa. The tamales were ok, not that good. Margs were good. Chips and salsa were both not good. Service was very slow and the place was empty. For the quality of everything, theyve got no business with these prices. Also ordered through an app and paid + tipped beforehand. I wouldve tipped the same 20% anyways, but I dont like that aspect when dining in a restaurant.

Not for me. Janky ordering system through Toast. Food quality was not great and it was overpriced. We had two tacos with sides Chips and queso Migas with all the fixings Enchilada with sides Chicken tamale with sides Four sodas. Over a hundred bucks. Beans and rice were dry. Eggs were cold and the wait staff seemed stressed out and hardly anyone there. We went on Sunday around 1pm. First time there, will not return. Parking: Pay for parking but they validate.

Overall my first time experience was disappointing. Upon entering there was no host to greet you so you will wander aimlessly inside to figure out the parking validation process. No signs to indicate that it was open seating. Staff walks past you not once offering to help or to answer question about the menu. For two people the bill ended up to be +70 dollars which was a little bit outrageous. The ordering process through the app was a nightmare. Since this was the tamale house I decided to try the pork tamales. The featured texas sized tamales had a disproportionate amount of protein (a little) and masa (a lot). Along with our food we decided to order a caipirinha to enjoy. It was not a caipirinha but instead tasted like ready to drink margarita mix. But since the staff never came around it was difficult to bring up any complaints. Pros: Great decor, shady seating area. Cons: inattentive staff, cocktails were mislabeled, inattentive staff, confusing parking/validation process, inattentive staff, expensive, and did I mention inattentive staff? Overall I would label this place as a tourist trap because I did not feel like they care if locals comeback or not. For the price you pay the level of service was non existence. Not worth your time or money.

We drove about an hour to get there but it was so worth it, we will be back many times. The Owners also came out and were so friendly and wonderful!

Why not invest in proper dining ware? Especially as a restaurant. As someone who is trying to lessen my carbon footprint, I was sorely disappointed to be served on single use plastic ware. Extremely disappointing. The food had zero flavor, and the beef fajita taco was supplemented with 90% potatoes instead of meat. You order through QR which made the staff almost nonexistent, and also meant our chips and salsa arrived with the food, not before, like it should. All of the food is served in plastic to go containers which is extremely disappointing in a city that is so green As a Hispanic from south Texas, I can easily say you should avoid this place if you are looking for authentic Mexican flavor.

When I was a young woman in the early 70s, I discovered the Tamale House #1 Trailer sitting on the corner of Congress Ave and 1st St (Cesar Chavez). I bought the most DELICIOUS Interior Mexican enchilades, tacos and tamales on this earth. TH food is always consistent and 45 years later I can attest to it. Im still eating the BEST Mexican food that you can ever find in a restaurant in Texas. The young daughter of the old man, is the current Owner. Diana is keeping the family tradition going. She and I are both 73 yrs old. I WILL ALWAYS BE A LOYAL CUSTOMER. I LOVE TAMALE HOUSE now located on E. 6th St.!!!

Such a cute vibe and food was incredible. Everything tasted very fresh. Plants were positioned everywhere which made for a chill environment. Seating options were plentiful. It was a seat yourself restaurant, so we chose the back which was located outside. We went during busy hours and still found a seat and parking. You order off a QR code and they bring the food out to you. We were surprised with how quickly we received our food, as there were only 2 runners in the back of this busy restaurant. We helped ourself to waters from a cooler. The idea of this restarting is fantastic and low maintenance. A few things that we did notice is that the food containers that the are served in seem to be wasteful (unless the reuse them). The tortillas were a bit soggy. Also the only tables left were small circular ones. There were 3 of us and we had ordered a few extra plates for chips/dip. We had to put some plates and drinks on the ground to make room for everything. However that was an us problem since we chose the table, knowing that there were 3 of us. Price was a little high at least compared to Mexican type eateries in houston. However, great experience, delish food, and we left overall satisfied. You cannot order wrong at this place. We will be back!

I was skeptical to try this place because of the way they spell tamale. There shouldnt be an e at the end, but we decided to give it a shot. This place has great vibes and atmosphere, definitely 5/5. We ordered the chilaquiles, chicken mole taco, and the chicken tamal. The chilaquiles were really good and the salsa verde was tasty. The tortillas were not crunchy but its because they were covered with the salsa verde. The refried beans were the star of the plate. Overall 4/5. The chicken mole was also delicious, had great flavor but a bit pricey. Id order it again if it wasnt $6 for one taco. The Tamal was a bit dry and the masa needed more flavor, it was bland but the chicken inside was good. We also tried some chips and salsa. We wanted to order it but it was $5. Luckily the table next to us didnt finish theirs so after they left we snatched them up. I guess you could say it was a steal ;) Very glad we didnt pay for it because the salsa was not good. It had no flavor and tasted like tomato water. The salsa they served us with the taco and chilaquiles was bomb AF tho. It tasted very fresh and good flavor. Id be happy to order a big portion of that salsa if they offered it on the menu. Overall experience was good, would come back again

I dont know how many breakfast tacos i ve had since i ve been in Austin, but you can forget about all of them and look no further than Tamale House East and their Spicy Migas Taco. Completely family owned and operated they have been around since the 50s and were the first to introduce breakfast tacos to Austin in the 80s. History aside, what truly separates this taco from the rest are two key ingredients: the crispy tortilla chips and Ranchero sauce. Every migas taco i ve had in Austin has soft or (to be completely honest) soggy tortillas. Not at Tamale House East, the crispy fried tortillas give the much needed crunch to create the perfect mouth feel and combination of textures that i ve felt every other migas taco is missing. Finally, the Ranchero sauce is what elevates this taco to a completely different level. It s a family recipe that takes them 2 hours to make at the crack of dawn. I could drink this sauce straight and to be honest, I did. Served warm, when mixed with the cheese and eggs it creates this unbelievably creamy and delicious combination that I promise will have you questioning what took you so long to come try it. Regardless of if you re just visiting or a lifelong Austin resident, do yourself a favor and check out the Spicy Migas Taco from Tamale House East. Your soul will thank you.
