Been coming here for years but just not enough with the crosstown traffic issues. Had dinner last week and it was excellent. I had the tacos gringas, basically tacos al pastore with cheese on red corn tortillas. It was great! They also have the best charro beans in the world! My wife had the chicken flautas which were also wonderful. Very good and generous house frozens. We will be back soon!

This visit occurred at 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday. It was busy and parking was tight. Seating is indoors and is somewhat limited. However, we easily found a parking place and our party of two was seated immediately. The waitress immediately took our drink orders and asked if we wanted an appetizer. My wife asked if I wanted to get the Salsa Sampler, which is popular, but I said I would pass this time. Our drinks arrived, but we never received any normal salsa and chips. We thought maybe the waitress didnt think we wanted any since I passed on the Salsa Sampler. So, my wife asked for some, and they arrived quickly. Our total drinks were two Modelo beers @ $6 each and a cocktail @ $14. All were good. I had the Dos Enchaladas plate. The menu shows it includes beans. The waitress asked what type beans I wanted and told me what was available. I chose charro beans. My wife ordered the Tamale plate and also chose charro beans. We also ordered an Empanda appetizer to have with the meal. Both food plates were good and were a big enough serving size to get a to-go box. The empandas were not good and had an old grease taste. The overall service was OK. Our bill was $77.96, pre tip. When I looked at the bill, I saw that we were charged $1 each for charro beans and $3 for chips and salsa. This has always been one of the two places we go to for Mexican food when in Austin. I dont remember ever being charged for a bean type or regular chips and salsa. I find such extra charges off-putting, even if only $5. Our total bill, for lunch, was $92.36. I would have probably rated Curras four stars in the past, but not now. I doubt Ill be back anytime soon. Parking: The parking spots are narrow.

This is an og Austin tex mex restaurant with the best queso and food. I have never been disappointed, and if you love avocados and you love margaritas, you will die for their avocado margarita. I never go there without having at least one. Check out their 2nd location on Duval. Its perfect too.

I will not be back to Curra s. My coworkers and I went to Curra s because we lost a coworker recently who used to like eating there. We went for lunch and to celebrate her life. Since we were a larger group, we called ahead to reserve a table but we re told we needed to give them 24 hours but to come by anyway. Upon sitting down, I noticed that it smelled like a literal toilet but thought maybe they had recently been trying to clean or something so didn t think too much about it. When we went to order, the waitress asked about the types of beans- refried, black, or charro. It wasn t until we got our check that we noticed they upsold the charro beans and did not inform us of the extra charge. Same with flavored margaritas. To top it off though, they split the bill 3 ways for us but still charged us as a large table and added gratuity without telling us it was an automatic charge. Had my boss not noticed, we would have left 20% on top of the already added in 20% gratuity. This restaurant tries to nickel and dime you and is not worth it. On top of that, their food was ok but certainly not worth the prices. Furthermore, when we brought these issues up to management we were dismissed and the manager seemed annoyed with us. When asked for an itemized receipt, she said she couldn t print one because it would send the items to the kitchen again (which, we were the only table so it wouldn t have been crazy to perhaps go to the kitchen to say hey, don t make this reprint ). There are better places to eat in austin that don t try these sketchy protocols. Curra s, do better.

I work down the street and used to recommend people visiting try this restaurant. I will no longer do that. I came here for my grandma s birthday. The waitress did not tell us she added a gratuity and then we tipped on top of it and did not realize until after we left and were talking. She should have given us a receipt and though an automatic gratuity is fine that is a sketchy business practice to not mention it nor give a receipt. The fish Veracruz was disgusting and tasted like it had sweet and sour sauce on it. I have had Veracruz a bunch of other times and never was it sweeter than icing. Be careful if you dine here of what you are being charged.

Food is HORRIBLE! Look at the man holding the dog at the table in the restaurant; they ALLOW DOGS in the restaurant. Found hair in both our margaritas and there was dog poop on the floor. This place needs the health department to come in!! Walked in was immediately attacked by the older Hispanic woman with frizzled gray black hair who I guess is their version of a hostess, was horribly rude in telling me and other to CLOSE THE DOOR and was rude to people in general. She assaulted a person who came in with a Service Dog while the restaurant had other people with dogs in the restaurant. This place needs to get rid of this old tyrant at the door. I ll never be back and am telling everyone I see. Really aweful experience here.

Disappointed we haven t been to Austin or Curra s for a few years. When we had the opportunity this is the first place we wanted to go. Use to be 5* for us. Me and my wife both left disappointed. Didn t like the enchiladas (they basically dump their salsa on to for the red sauce now), the Carne Guisada and refried beans were ok, rice had little or no flavor. Have to buy queso or a few other things to get chips and salsa. The queso was pretty good. Service was pretty slow and didn t return to check on us very often. Overall we not impressed and doubt we ll give them another chance or not before we leave town.

We used to eat here a couple of times a week for many years. Saw a lot of turnover in staff and that the owner was focusing on indulging rather than the restaurant. The quality declined in terms of food, value and service to the point that we stopped frequenting which was a real disappointment for us. Apparently things have continued to erode. They went from multiple locations back to this one. We know it is a challenge to do food service and we appreciate their effort and risk. But we fear the end is near. If youre a fan, please continue to frequent them and give your valuable feedback during each visit. We dont like to lose local independent restaurants and would love to become regulars again should things improve. Much love! And thank you, Curras, for all the good times.

I left a 5-star review a few years ago because I usually DID enjoy Curras. But the last two or three times I ve went it was very subpar. The price point doesn t match what you get. Spent $40 on one quesadilla, chips & salsa (yeah, gotta pay for these) and a margarita. Granted, the avocado margaritas have ALWAYS been good, and the main reason I ve come. But besides that, meh. This last time some of the staff was kind of rude (our server was nice though). Also the side plates they brought us were a bit smudgy. A ~$16 (with tax) quesadilla shouldn t just come with the protein and cheese and a tiny scoop of guac and pico. You can go to a legit Mexican food truck and the quesadilla is LOADED FAT with goodies and comes with bell peppers, avocado slices, sour cream, jalapeños, etc etc etc. Curras didn t even look grilled at all (what?) and was the most vanilla stuff ever. No real spices to season it. That warrants like an $8 price point at most. Seriously. Sad food. Still, good margarita even though they ARE also expensive and I feel like the large size isn t as big as it used to be. Also, we didn t get napkins/silverware for quite a while. So yeah. Not worth it. Years ago it at least seemed a LITTLE better (although not even in my top 10). Those avocado margaritas are just really yummy. Smoothie texture. But still expensive. Barely worth it. Wouldn t get food if I DID come back. Which might not be ever. Vegetarian options: They offer some vegetarian choices. Veggie chorizo on some dishes

Curras has been a favorite restaurant of mine for years. However, unfortunately over the past year, the owner s focus seems to be shifting more towards profit than quality. They first decreased portion sizes of the side dishes, then they changed the enchilada plate to include only one side when previously it came with both rice and beans. Finally, the quality of the food has gone downhill and many items are overpriced. I ordered dinner to-go two weeks ago and both the refried black and refried pinto beans tasted horrible. Sadly, Curras will no longer be a frequent destination for me. Only pros were the service I received was great.

Were local in the neighborhood since 2019 and have always loved going to Curras; this colorful, south Austin staple is a gem. My review is simply some feedback to the restaurant about our experience there yesterday. It seems like after their big refurbishment this year, a couple of things might have changed? The bar menu doesnt have any prices listed on them. I can understand posting a bar menu online without the prices, but when youre already sitting at the bar, I think its better for a casual, family-style restaurant to go ahead and share the prices with their customers. We had ordered 2 regular frozen lime margaritas and our waitress kindly suggested that we upgrade to the special margaritas which we took her advice and ordered. They were delicious. We ordered a 3rd margarita to share and chips and salsa. When she told us the total at the end however, we were both shocked...$45 for 3 drinks and chips/salsa only! Turns out each drink was $13 and chips/salsa was $3. My feedback that is that the drink prices seemed steep for a family-owned, family-style restaurant. While wonderful, the margaritas glasses are not big, especially for $13. I probably would feel better about this if there was more transparency from the start! I can understand why a restaurant wants to charge for chips & salsa to cover some of its costs, but as a born and bred Texan, I guess being charged for a TexMex staple feels a little nickel & dimed. We will continue to support Curras going forward but hoping to see more transparency on the menus.

Solid local stalwart I love coming back to. They say variety is the spice of life in this case life had a wonderful spicy variety: I LOVE the salsa sampler. I legit was embarrassing and ate a whole cup of the queso with licorice, guacamole, and piccadillo in it. I had the zucchini soup but it wasn t for me. That mole stole the show for me. I will be back again and again for the chill, and even still, neighborhood vibe. Especially going back for the mole. (The manager is phenomenal) Vegetarian options: Some veggies. More pescatarian. Dietary restrictions: They were able to accommodate me and my keto needs. Lots of fish options. Some vegetarian options. Parking: Great little lot for a great little restaurant. Appropriate parking for capacity. Kid-friendliness: Super chill neighborhood Mexican spot. Wheelchair accessibility: All one level. A little uneven paving.

Went on a quiet weekday evening. Got the special queso and it still had chunks of unmelted Velveeta in it. Kinda disappointing. Enchiladas Colorado were great. My buddy had something in a banana leaf he liked. Fajitas were good.

The food and drinks where so good! I got the Enchiladas con Chile Colorado and an a avocado margarita. The enchiladas where cheese covered in a unspicy guajillo & chipotle sauce. It was so tasty! The margarita was such a unique experience, in that it was really smooth, I would definitely recommend checking it out.

My partner heard about this place on a podcast, so we tried it. Absolutely in love. They had the chicken enchiladas and mole and still reminisces on how good it was. I stayed simple and got 2 tacos, but it filled me up. If we are ever back in Austin we are going back

The food here is predictable and decent. Having said that, it s nothing special. The service, however, is awful. We had a large gathering there recently and despite ample room in the main restaurant our party was seated outside in brutal heat. One of our guests passed out. The server neglected to take an entire table s order and was surly in response to a request to expedite it. If the food were amazing that would be one thing, but average food and horrible service make this a place to avoid.

We had a great dinner last night at Curras. This was our first visit to Austin and we decided to start with a Mexican restaurant. We are used to the Mexican restaurants in California and we love them. Turns out we also love the Texas version of Mexican food. Everything we tried was great, including the Chile Relleno and the Quesadillas. The guacamole was excellent. I only wish that we had ordered the large version of guacamole. The chips and salsa were excellent. For those that strongly prefer mild salsa might find their salsa a little on the hot side, but I liked it. We enjoyed their margaritas. We asked for traditional margaritas, not the ones that were on the menu. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Really loved this place. Their tamales are some of the best I have had in Austin. Also tried tacos de la calle al pastor. Meat was very flavorful and stuffed with meat (enough to make extra tacos with the extra torrilla). Salsa taquera on point! Very well done! Definitely will be returning and recommending to my family n friends.

Curras has been an Austin classic in Interior (Traditional) Mexican food for almost 30 years. If you havent been yet, its time to go now. The service has always been top notch for us. The food and drinks are always exactly what were craving. First, start your meal off with an Avocado Margarita (not pictured) and the Salsa Sampler. Their Avocado Margaritas have a fun consistency with bright marg flavor. The salsa sampler is a really great way to experiment with many of the flavors on their menu. For this meal, my boyfriend got the Enchiladas con Chile Colorado. The pork tips on top of the enchiladas were tender and the sauce they were smothered in had a bold, guajillo flavor. I got the Cancun Relleno. Its a big poblano stuffed with shrimp, pineapple, and peppers then covered with a chipotle cream sauce. I really liked that the poblano wasnt fried as it would have taken away from the rest of the ingredients. I would definitely get it again. Next time youre craving Mexican, change it up from good ol Tex-Mex and come give Curras a try!

Weak margaritas and dry flavorless pastor street tacos that took wayy too long to make. The salsa and queso were good at least. Waitress said welp trial and error, next time try the enchiladas. I flicked the jerky they called pastor and said it shouldnt be that hard. Pun intended

Went on Friday, knowing it was a holiday but the experience was ridiculous. Avoid on any holiday. Put a name in, checked in with the host about an hour later and was told our party of 6 was next to be seated but was waiting on a table large enough to seat us. We watched multiple parties get sat at large tables before us with only 3-4 people. Finally sat 2.5 hours after, to find out there was a limited menu. No indication on the website or announcement that there would be a limited menu. When it was time to order, the waitress then told us half the limited menu was out. So 4 out of 6 of the people at the table had to change their order again due to that. When the food came, three people got their meals and after ten minutes, the waitress checked in and asked how everything was when half of us didn t get our food. Understanding that it was a popular holiday, but very disorganized and disappointed.

Worst experience. Our waitress is drunk and has attitude for no reason. Extremely rude and unprofessional. We were told 30 minutes and waited 2 hours and watched people who arrived after us get seated before us. We kept checking on our table. We stayed because we did have drinks from the bar. I m a local who grew up down the street and I felt anyone who didn t look like me, got seated first with better treatment. The previous time we came, the same waitress was tasting drinks from the bar before taking them to the tables. We didn t receive part of our order and the avocado margarita was not good. I will say they have a really good spicey jalepeno margarita. Extremely disappointed and will never spend money here again.

This is THE BEST Mexican food restaurant in Austin (and we have a LOT of Mexican restaurants). My favorite breakfast is huevos albañil with a taco al pastor ala carte and Oaxacan coffee. The best breakfast ever! The mama chef cooks specialty dished from all over Mexico. A real artist. Try avocado margaritas or their molé, fantastic.
