I lived down the street when I was in college. Played music there for years. Ate there. Ive seen everyone there, you name em. If ya aint been there, you better go! As Mr. James White would say...git your best girl, come two-step, waltz, git ya a chicken-fried steak. We aint got none of that grey poupon...we got regular mustard...none that Piere water. Come dance and have fun. Everybody has to go at least once in their life.

We truly enjoyed our visit to Broken Spoke last night! The band that played in the dining room played the good old country we love to listen to. We snacked on some yummy cheese fries with bacon and then afterwards moved into the dancehall where the second band also played great dance music. The dance floor was packed but we were able to navigate it and danced the night away! The beer was cold and the ambiance was just what we hoped for.

The broken spoke is exactly what it is, what you want it to be and what its always been. That local Honkytonk with great people from age 7 to 70 that just want to have a good time and recall the days of simple pleasures like boot scooting in Texas! No there arent granite countertops in the bathroom! This is simple basic absolute perfection with a focus on people enjoying each other and music.

Was excited to take my family for the dance lesson. Doorman said $160 for my fam of 5 (2 kids, 3 adults). I was about to pay it but knew it was off. When I asked about it, he was rude and quick to firmly and untactfully reiterate $160. When I took out my phone calculator, he became more irritated and was convinced he was right. He was snarky and the whole vibe was bad. So I asked my girls if they wanted to shop at Cavenders and Bucees instead. A big yes on that one. Ill never step foot in the broken spoke again. Horrible etiquette. Im embarrassed for them.

Thankfully, we did not pay for the dance lessons as the instructor was extremely rude and inappropriate. We were so uncomfortable just watching that we left after 30 minutes and didnt even get to see the band play. Definitely do not go!

TLRD; The old lady owner is a bigot and isnt afraid to show it inside her business where no one will record her. Go somewhere else. I was just there over the weekend with some buddies and the owner approached us within 1 minute of being there yelling at us asking what country we are in, that we dont use their currency & dont want to learn their language. To clarify we were all speaking English as thats what most of us only know. At first I was confused with the what country are we in part as if she was legit lost and confused and I was about to offer her some help but then the rest came out and we immediately knew shes old school and didnt want us there. It started with us being directed to go to the dance hall in the back to pay. We went and started to line up against the inner dance hall wall to not block their narrow hallway leading to it. She then came yelling at us with all that nonsense, even one of her employees came to get her and told her to calm down. We were then asked to get back in the hallway to then shortly after one of the staff made the comment of us blocking the hallway (clearly what we were trying to avoid). In the end we left and would rather spend our money and evening somewhere else.

Came here with a group of my buddies for my best mate s bachelor party. We are all people of color and were extremely disrespected by the owner. The owner complained at us what country are we in and you need to speak our language and use our currency while the whole time we were speaking English (since all of us are from the US) just trying to figure out how many are going to do the dance lesson and just the cover fee. If you re white, yeah this is your place. If you re not, good luck getting past the owner. I know this place has history but didn t think it also came with a side of racism.

Fun music, nice people overall, but too judgmental for new folk; there isnt much visible direction up front, so how are we supposed to know what to do when we only get lip when asking a member of staff what to do. If your directions were clearly and boldly posted, then we wouldnt ask and waist their time. Also no water station, $3 per bottle.

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. But unfortunately I cannot, so I must give it one. All the staff were extremely hostile from the minute our party walked in (we had made this reservation days in advance, so it s not like we had a huge party that just randomly walked in). We were told that if we wanted to order food, we would have to go to the bar counter to order, which the bartenders were not happy about of course. The bartenders frustration was then taken out on us as well. When our food was ready they would set it out on a random table in the dining area to grab FOR OURSELVES which was absolute chaos. We had so many dirty dishes piling up on our tables to the point where one of our dads grabbed a tub from the back and was bringing our dishes back to the kitchen staff, UNREAL! On top of the beyond poor food and drink service we d already been experiencing, and then some free labor, our party had also signed up for the two step class. The class was super fun, besides some questionable touching on our teens! After the class had ended, all of our kids made a dance circle out on the floor, which many other guests had joined in on. All of a sudden, one of the old men working at this establishment GRABBED one of our kids by her arm and yelled at all of them to quit line dancing . At this point we were just so appalled with their attitude towards us that we had to leave. An unreal experience I will unfortunately never forget. PS: this place was EXTREMELY overpriced and a borderline health hazard it was so dirty. Don t even think about using the bathrooms there, the bathroom stall doors were shower curtains?!?!

They say ten bucks online, but its really teen plus fifteen (cover charge). $25 was okay, but then youre in a room with 50+ other people all wanting to learn how to dance. We were given an hour-long comedy show, with a little dance instruction thrown in. It was fun, and Im glad we went. One time visit for us though. Beer was cheap!!!

This place knows how to throw a party. As a restaurant and bar, its pretty so-so. The staff are pretty overwhelmed and its not very clean. However as a dance hall, this is one of the coolest places you can go. Experts and beginners alike can go and dance and have the time of their lives. It doesnt take long to get drinks either. My wife and I are amateur dancers but weve never danced two-step before. We took the lesson and learned the basic very easily. We just kind of winged it from there and we had such an awesome time. This place is a true Texas treasure and if you are even mildly interested in dancing you should go here.

Country fans from Europe who were met with an incredibly hostile welcome. We came with very good intentions to do some line dancing and were met with a man at reception who was incredibly (and sadly very hostile) who said that we deliberately skipped past reception. As tourists we ve never been to this place and subsequently said that we d be happy to join the back of the queue and pay any entry necessary (and apologised for not seeing the reception!) he immediately said he was calling 911 and manhandled us out of the place. Despite us saying we d (as I said) pay entry, queue and it was all just an innocent mistake). Honestly such a real shame and a very big downer on our trip and every other welcome we have had in the US has been so warm. In short, don t go here unless you re wearing a cowboy hat and boots otherwise you ll be manhandled out.

Its a good vibe but dont expect much from the dance lessons. Not child friendly. We came before the dance hall opened and there wasnt any room to sit down or even stand, so we left to get dinner and came back after 1915 hrs when the hall opened. $10 (CASH ONLY) each for entry and $10 each for the two-step dance lessons. The dance instructor told inappropriate jokes and it was most definitely not child friendly. However, a bit of fun for only $10 each. There were about 40-50 people learning to dance on a Thursday night so we didnt feel out of place or awkward. We were complete beginners and my husband has two left feet hut we still had fun. The band (Chapparal) were so awesome and drinks were reasonably priced. People danced all night after 9pm once the dance lesson was over. We would go back again but arrive after 9pm for the good vibes.

HORRIBLE experience! READ! Went for a friends birthday on a Friday night. Getting into the establishment was already a struggle, I had took it upon myself to read the website in its entirety and multiple reviews and NOTHING had said it was cash only! After seeing interesting reviews on the dance instructor we still decided to go, the instructor, Terry, loudly poked fun at the birthday girls (a minor) breast coming out of her dress and proceeded to slap her butt after the birthday girl refused to give her a hug. Not only was this portion inappropriate for a family friendly establishment terry was repeatedly talking down to women in general. After the birthday girl ran off crying I told the manager who was checking ids (he said his name was nick) about our experience and he refused a refund until I told him about terry and that I knew about the past reviews. Not only did he continue to give us attitude, he threatened to call the cops on us multiple times. Needless to say we will definitely not be returning and urge people to not take the dance lessons.

She directed us to a table. We looked up menu on our phones and 10 min later a woman walked by and asked if we were going to order. We said we were, and she kept walking. Genuinely do NOT understand why this establishment has ANY good reviews, given the pervasive racism, sexism, and disregard for personal boundaries exhibited by the individuals involved. My experience at this venue, celebrating my 20th birthday with friends, left me emotionally distressed and triggered an anxiety attack due to the overwhelming disrespect I encountered. From the outset, the individual manning the front door displayed blatant disrespect. Once the so-called dance lessons commenced, Terri, the instructor, segregated participants by gender and proceeded to make sexist remarks, only encouraging dancing with individuals of the opposite sex. As many of my friends were underage, and there were older men present, we immediately felt unsafe and uncomfortable. During the dance lesson, Terri diverted the focus to a monologue about her personal life, failed marriages, and made racist remarks. When she invited me onto the dance floor, I declined, expressing my intention to dance only with friends. Despite my refusal, Terri forcibly pulled me onto the floor, provided a brief demonstration, and then asked for a hug. When I declined and began to walk away, she aggressively slapped my behind, leaving me overwhelmed and triggering an anxiety attack. Later, I learned that Terri had similarly inappropriate behavior towards underage individuals, further exacerbating the distressing environment. Upon attempting to obtain a refund for the harassment endured, a friend was initially refused until the person in charge of the money acknowledged other online reviews documenting Terris history of harassing customers. PLEASE DO NOT COME HERE

Its an Austin landmark! Used to go a lot when I was a senior in high school back in the very early 80s. The wait staff was completely overwhelmed (we went to have dinner) but there was a great band performing in the dining room. It was also great for people watching. Love love love The Spoke!!!!

The place is great but the $10 dance lesson was horrible. There was no lesson, just a woman making crude jokes about everyone and showing us a single dance move that we practiced for about 2 minutes. Definitely go but save your time and money and show up at 9:00 when the band starts.

Definitely fun and a must go to! I took away a star because $25 is a pretty steep cash ticket price. Drinks were affordable tho but I m not a big drinker so I d prefer to pay less to get in. Anyway it s historic and sure to be a good time so you gotta go regardless!

A small group of about 10 celebrated a friends birthday on Saturday evening at The Spoke. Although the place was packed, we still had a great time and enjoyed some delicious food. I can t remember our waitresses name but she did a great job. If you re looking for something fancy, go elsewhere, but if you are looking for an authentic honky tonk experience with some great music, get on down to The Spoke.

Ive been in Austin for 13 years and have always wanted to go to the Broken Spoke, and I am not sure why we didnt do it sooner, especially when we are die-hard country music fans. We went on a Saturday around 7.30pm, and the place was reasonably packed but not as much until about 8pm, before the dance lessons started. The instructor, Terri White, is an amazing lady who made it all fun and easy to learn. I had the best time with my big family that day, and I cant wait to go back again. Some things to know: 1. Entry to the dance hall is $15 per person 2. Drinks are reasonably priced 3. Wear your boots and join in the fun

Went there to check this place out. First off place smells like a dive bar and looks like one too. The table cloths haven t been wiped off or cleaned in who knows how long. So I lifted mine up and there s gum stuck to the table. This place could definitely turn around if they put some love back into it. The bartenders seem to be very happy that they work there as well (not). 15$ cover charge and pretty disappointing with fact that there were children in the establishment, kinda weird..

Went with my sisters. It wasnt that awesome. Expected it to have constant music, if the band is on break there is no music at all, not a line dancing place at all( and Im from California lol!!) The chairs are extremely filthy. If there was non stop music I think wed have enjoyed it more. And 15$ cover charge is pretty high for such a dirty place. If you like to 2 step thats all thats here for ya and food. But we didnt eat here. So no review on that part.

Whoever is in charge of answering your phones or the lady who answered the phone should be fired. I genuinely have never had such poor and awful service. Her attitude was terrible and to top it off she HUNG UP on me while enquiring about a table. Disgusting service.

Can t believe I m saying this, but don t go here. I love country music and its history. It this place is a dump. Held together with nails and duct tape. Has such limited parking, I squeezed in beside a truck and came back to my car at 11 o clock later that night to find they had broken off my side mirrors. You want to see a dance hall, take the time to drive down to Gruene Hall. This place is a joke.

There are several iconic places in Austin, but probably none of them rely on being Iconic as a reason to visit as The Broken Spoke. The place is a dump. Everything looks broken. It smells like moldy spilled beer. They charge a $10 cover with an optional $15 dance lesson fee. The dance lessons entail a 60+yr old instructor mostly telling lame jokes in between barking vague instructions to 50 people simultaneously - for about 40 minutes. Then the blue haired red neck band Wagoneers eventually introduce themselves and begin playing the most genuine honky tonk, Texas swing, music youll hear anywhere, and within minutes, it all makes sense. You just cant help but kick back, smile and enjoy the place, and the music, and realize that both may not last forever.

I would not recommend going to the dance lessons because Terry hardly teaches dance in the session. We learned two dance moves in a one hour period and spent most of the time listening to irrelevant crass commentary. She even touched the backsides of several girls who were underage. It definitely is a tourist trap and not an authentic Texan experience. It seems like it is more about Terry s vanity than about actually teaching people how to dance two-step. It is listed as $10 online per person, but they charged $25 per person. She also interrogated someone about where they were really from which is offensive. I would recommend a country show at the Saxon Pub down the street instead.

Went to spoke for two steppin Tuesday and after dancing was liking for a water jug with cups like dance halls in Texas normally have in hand. Bartender said only have bottled water for $2 each and they do not have a jug of free water. Not cool if you ask me that a dance hall like this does not have free water.
