This place is by far the best Chinese food in Austin! I ve been here multiple times and am always blown away by both the food and the drinks. Our server, Alex was great and incredibly friendly. We got the green beans which were incredible. We shared the Xiao Mian noodles which were delicious as well as the General Tsao s Tofu. To drink, we ordered the Old Thousand and the Szechuan margarita and then a ginger margarita - all of which were complex and great. I can t recommend finishing with their donuts enough - the pandan cream really takes them to the next level.

Went 9/10/24. Didnt like this place, plates are too expensive for atmosphere (many cramped tables, small dining area with too many tables placed inside just to make more money). The back of my chair was hitting the back of another guy when I arrived, I had to scoot my chair way up to my table. Only around 6 tables were being used tho but small staff seemed real busy, it was hard to get their attention. Ordered the brisket fried rice $19 and general tso $18 with 1 virgin drink and ended up getting charged 60.27 which I really think was a mistake because Id never had given more than 8 dollars in tips here if any, and I doubt the virgin drink was 15+ dollars. Honestly dont think I even gave a tip but I sadly dont have the receipt to check. Im soo mad. The worst part is I am a big fan of fried rice and my fried rice plate was so small, it was LESS THAN HALF of a combination Fried rice order from Fun China that costs $14.62 on Rundberg. I left there hungry and out 60 dollars. The brisket pieces were cut real tiny, not one strand or chunk of meat like in every other fried rice plate Ive ever ordered. So it had the flavor of brisket like seasoned with flakes but not really a brisket fried rice plate. The food tasted okay but had to ask a second time for spicy chili since the first container was just chili oil (literally only the oil no chili flakes) so it was weirdly not spicy at all, just oily with no flavor. It all comes down to how much I get for the price, bad return and experience for me but if you can afford a pseudo fancy dinner date and dont care how much food youll get for the amount youll spent, go here. Make sure you keep the receipt in case they are overcharge you

Used to come here a ton from 2022-2023 and took a break. Started coming again this year, and I swear the quality has felt very different compared to those years where the food was the right saltiness and flavor (The General tso , Brussels, and Mala) . Mightve been due to a staff change sadly

Got takeout brussel sprouts and they were burnt so badly we had to toss them, they were so bitter and left a bad taste in our mouth. Everything else was pretty good though - Kung pao chicken, salt and pepper tofu from the happy hour were delicious and the service is good! Overall would go back just very disappointed about the brussel sprouts

The food is phenomenal, the atmosphere is perfect and the drinks are to die for. My mom and I came here on a whim looking for good asian food and we were not disappointed. The beef and broccoli is the best beef and broccoli that my mom and I had ever had, and the Mala fried chicken is amazing and made better by dipping it in the pineapple sauce that the jalapeño popper rangoons come in! Would definitely recommend and well definitely be coming back! Our waitress Olive was the best! Very attentive and had the best recommendations!!

They really have some good food. I had a forced break after they closed the Burnett location, but after looking at the menu the other day I made the drive for takeout. More vegan options, yay! Thanks for being a part of the community guys. Vegetarian options: Hey google, can we stop using vegetarian? Most places are vegetarian friendly. We need vegan labeled more often please.

I came for the $10 dating 5-7 deal and to be 100% honest I didnt have the best experience ever, the waitress ignored me and on top of that the kitchen staff make fun fun of me for that instead of letting the waitress know that I was trying to get her attention. The food was ok, big portion but I had diarrhea afterwards. Never had that before, not sure if I can recommend it. I believe I shouldve gone to Seven spirit on 7th for $1 dll taco Tuesday. Literally best $1 dlla taco ever. Not trynna make publicity but ay least those guys treat me with respect and I only needed 2 tacos to be full filled. Im not saying to avoid this place neither but it wasnt the best experience in town for me.

Very disappointing experience. We got take out from here. They have a mandatory 15% wellness charge that wasn t disclosed to me. No utensils/condiments were included in our takeout bag. The food quality and portion size was a huge let down. I got seven small shrimp with my $19 honey pecan shrimp order with a clump of dried out rice. The sauce container that was included was barely filled and wasn t enough to coat the shrimp. I will never give them my business again. Everyone was so disappointed and we ended up ordering pizza to feel better.

Wow. Its all about the flavor! I had the smoked lo mein that packed in the flavor. My companions (bka my family) did not have the same love for the brisket fried rice, and I have to agree. The rice was good, but we couldnt find the seasoning. Now the dessert. Yas! The Panna cotta with mango popping boba and lychee ice and coconut cream was dreamy. We came back for brunch the next day and had the chicken and bubble waffles. All I can say is YAS MAAM . Ill have another! Great Friday night atmosphere with fun music. Saturday morning was chill and laid back. Its an Austin staple. Go check em out!

Old Thousand has been on my list for a bit now and I finally got around to it. It was about time I tried the place that people keep talking about. And I can see why it s so popular! I ordered the jalapeño popper rangoons to start and got the brisket fried rice and broccoli beef. I wanted a bit more heat to the dishes so the chili oil helped. I think I liked the broccoli beef more. Great cocktails and save room for dessert. The panna cotta was pretty good but the winner was definitely the donuts! Shoutout to Kylie for her great service and recommendations. Old Thousand is excellent!

Whatever you do don t order take out from this place. We ordered Orange Chicken, General Tso s Chicken and Brisket Fried Rice. First off, the $21 Brisket Fried Rice was fine, a unique twist on fried rice, however, the size they sent was basically a side, for $21! The Orange Chicken was flavorless, plus at $18 dollars for this it was in a ok size container but, it was 3/4 rice and a tiny bit of orange chicken. Same with the General Tso s, at least the it had flavor though. Overall, I feel like we got ripped off from this place very hard. What a terrible practice to base a business off of. Won t be ordering from here again.

So far my favorite Chinese spot in Austin. Perfectly balanced dishes in a great atmosphere with reasonable prices and great service. I always get the Kung Pao chicken on my first visit to a Chinese place because it s a great staple to compare. Theirs knocks it out of the park with great veggies and sauce and perfectly cooked chicken. We also had great service and a great cucumber salad that balanced out the heat of the meal so well. Would definitely recommend. We finished off with the donuts, and they transported me to my childhood of eating Chinese buffet food just to get the sugary goodness of donut balls. They taste exactly like your best memory of those sweets. In my opinion, it s a cheaper and better spot for date night or just a dinner than Wu Chow! Check it out!

Brought a group here for dinner. Food is solid -- very much not trying to be authentic, but a fun version of Chinese with a twist, and most of the menu is vegetarian, which worked well for our group. Our server was kind and attentive on a busy night, Cocktails are great, though our focus was food. Vegetarian options: We focused on veg because of the makeup of our group and were happy! Kid-friendliness: This is NOT a place I would bring kids, as a rule. That aint the vibe, and you would need to have an adventurous eater. Better off taking them to a cheaper, more traditional place.

First time here. I ordered general tso chicken. While there was no shortage of chicken, that was about it, one spring onion and thats it. I also ordered the hot and sour soup. The most sour thing was that the $10 cup of soup was only half full and the top 1/8 inch was an oil slick. It was a neat enough atmosphere, but the actual food left a lot to be desired. Sorry, not coming back.

As soon as my date entered the restaurant it was apparent we both were pleasantly surprised by the low light ambience and coziness of Old Thousand. We sat on at the bar and shared plates. No expectations here except those that reared up as we read the menu. We had the Mala Fried Chicken (5 stars), the short ribs (5 stars), grilled butternut squash (5 stars and had a different nomenclature attached), and the 5 Spice donut holes (5 stars). This is a gem of a place to sit with a table of friends and share or an intimate one-on-one date night. Check out the wallpaper! Parking: Be patient, lots of residential permit only parking nearby.

Great place to eat, hangout, freak out, take-out. The green beans, although I dont have evidence for this outside of my own deep experience of the truth, prevent all forms of cancer. Flavinoids, vitamins, major spiciness credibility. I was in such a daze after gobbling up the salt and pepper tofu that I just popped the fortune cookie right into my mouth without cracking it open. I tried to pinch the paper and slide it out of my mouth, but it had dissolved. The fortune that melts in your mouth, a perfect metaphor for....how nice Old Thousand is, if you dont think too hard about it.

I used to order Old Thousand on a weekly basis back in 2019/2020, as I lived nearby off 11th, and my go-to s were the Mala Fried Chicken and Xiao Mian Noodles. Given the pandemic and a few life changes, I hadn t ordered in over a year and excitedly decided to this evening. I m sad to say that I am highly disappointed in the alterations made to these two items in particular, and because of them, more than likely won t be ordering or recommending OT again. First, the Mala Fried Chicken. It held its original crispness and flavor, but had WAY too high a Szechuan salt content. This spice was either not used or lightly used previously, as I d not had the mouth tingles eating it ever before. It was to the point where I needed to take breaks in order to enjoy the dish, which, in ways, defeats the purpose of eating virtually anything. Plus? OT apparently stopped serving white rice with the Mala Fried Chicken quite a long time ago. For a $13 dish, a side of rice is practically a given but it seems they made it a small plate and use that to justify the change. As an old lover of the entree though, it was disappointing to see. Next, the Xiao Mian noodles. These used to be an excellent addition to the Mala Fried Chicken, but have lost their sauciness due to a change in noodle and flavoring. Again, Szechuan salt overtakes the dish and the new noodles are much thinner/more dense to their predecessor. This results in a drier, less satisfactory experience to the saucy udon-y option which is a major downfall. Overall, it really just feels as though the food at Old Thousand has gone down in quality and up in Szechuan salt, masking the slights in quality with mouth-numbing spice. I regret spending $40+ on two items I could barely eat and do not plan to revisit.

I love that they bring everything to you as it is ready. It was a bit weird that we received our appetizers last, but I would much rather have fresh food than food in a specific order. If they could refine the timing, it would be even better. Everything was seasoned appropriately and the portions are not bad. Its not cheap, but we also had some leftovers. The punch I got was well-balanced, but my friend wasnt a huge fan of her panda punch. I would have to try more drinks to comment on the cocktails at length, but they seem decent to good. Ill be back, I only wish they had a larger menu.

The food was amazing, Not a typical Asian restaurant serving style. This is sharable size dishes served as theyre prepared. The main dishes are perfect for 2. The spicy wontons are hot but the flavor is amazing, too much spice for the mild palette, but a medium spicy level for a spicy food lover. The general tsos chicken was perfectly crispy under the glaze. Parking: Their parking lot is located behind the building. You can also park in the dirt lot next door. Street parking in front is very limited.

Excellent food and service We had the Brisket Fried Rice, Mala Fried Chicken, Chinese Green, TSO Chicken, and Chinese Donut Holes. Even though they seem to be an American owner and have American cooks but the food is SO Chinese man. Everything smells so good. The fried rice seems to be fried using a bit of fat which causes the authentic sense of smell. The fried chicken was beyond expectation, super crispy but the inside is soft. They put the sauce and chilli oil on the side for us cuz we don t eat spicy but dipping it in doesn t taste spicy at all. The chilli oil gives the dish such a good smell. The Chinese Green looks American but tastes Chinese too I also love their donut holes, it s like cake donut covered in cinnamon, and sugar powder (?). The green sauce has a taste of matcha and custard. Best donut holes I ve ever had The atmosphere feels cozy and the bathroom is very clean. Our server was very chill and provided great customer service. Parking: 1h = $6 3h = $10

Pretty dang spicy to us but we pushed through. The chili wontons were my favorite but definitely the hottest part of our meal. My son got the Mala fried chicken (sans chili sauce) and my husband got the brisket fried rice. It was all delicious and filling. It is served family style and you are given your own plate so you can try a bit of everything. Our server was attentive, friendly and thorough. We liked the chill, kind of dark atmosphere. Probably the only negative, and it was small, was that it was pretty warm inside of the restaurant. Mixed with the spice and room temperature, my husband was sweating pretty good haha. The parking is a bit tricky but if you just trust Google maps it will take you right where you need to go. They do validate parking so dont pay for your parking up front if you park in the paid area between the buildings. We will go back to take our other son who LOVES spicy food. We didnt order tofu, but if thats what youre into, there were a couple options. We appreciated the streamlined and limited menu. Dietary restrictions: Several options with tofu Parking: It is a paid parking lot but they do validate so dont pay up front. They have a qr code to scan at the hostess stand.

The food here is pretty spectacular but taste and quality is slowly slipping for starters they take away some staple dishes from the menu the smoked fire noodles were a MUST in my friend group and they took those away and the beef lo mein for no apparent reason and with no replacement? menu prices have gone up and portions have gotten smaller the staff is always rude and snooty never welcoming or kind or accommodating wether you dine in or pick up and even just for a pickup they charge you a 15% staff wellness fee just cause? and don t even tell you about it scammy. went from going every week to rarely ordering or recommending

Salt, with your Chinese food on the side. They must ve mixed the salt and something else shaker or something because everything was so salty it almost became spicy because it hurt so much. And immediate diarrhea right after. By the time we came out of the bathroom someone was already sitting in our seats!! Hahaha. Good potential, creative food. Just so salty .. don t recommend for your truly Asian parents. Good for young people with blood pressure to spare.

Tasty food. However, small portion sizes but still expensive prices, large mandatory tip for pickup orders and this mandatory tip (workers wellness fee) is attempted to be hidden; it does NOT show up on the order confirmation email, but if you do the math you will find the amount. Plus this time the usually delicious brisket fried rice was dry, overcooked. The wait to get the food was listed as an hour and a half, but when I showed up then it still wasn t ready. I m afraid I won t be taking out from here anymore.

This restaurant has great food but the service is atrocious to say the least. 2nd vist....drove in from Houston just for the brisket fried rice. Waiter seems high and cant remember anything. Previous visit we never did get all of our food, but watched couples get served who came in after. I dont want to think these people are racist but Im starting to wonder. Waiting for an hour now and still no food. The previous visit was just bad. Waited for HOURS (with an S). My daughter and I enjoyed the food we did get so much from the first visit, she thought shed bring her husband back on a special little road trip....WRONG!!!! Reservation wasnt ready and the service is worse than the last time.

I had higher expectations for this place considering the high ratings on Google and rave reviews on Austin Eater. You can order food and drinks from your phone or with your waiter or a combination of both. Everything is served family style and comes out when it is ready. We ordered the special shrimp dish, brussels sprouts, brisket fried rice and General Tsos chicken. Everything was fine, nothing special. Out of those dishes, the chicken was the best. The shrimp was bland, brussels sprouts were soggy and the fried rice was under seasoned. Drinks were also fine, nothing to write home about. I doubt Ill be back. Like I said, nothing was bad, just underwhelming. Parking: Parking is validated but you need to register on your phone.

Dont go in thinking Chinese full menu. Its a limited type menu, of Chinese that is prepared well! Even my kids loved it (13 & 7)! The atmosphere is unique, in that disco music plays while decorated in classic Chinese restaurant w/o the gaudy gold, all in an old diner. Just felt very Austin! Also you can see one of the Moontowers installed in the 1890s street side. Austin is the only place in the world these still exist. Must call out the cocktails, I had a classically prepared Bananna drink made with whipped egg. I normally would not go for something like this but I have a place in my heart for lost meal/drink preparation from my childhood. My only complaint is that every time the bathroom door opened you see the toilet. Vegetarian options: See menu to verify Parking: Parking lot is in the back between residential building almost looks like an alley. There is street parking as well on the store front side.

We spend over $50 on fried rice, chicken and an egg roll. The egg roll was sour and not good. The sauce that came with it was like soy sauce for sushi - very weird with an egg roll. The general tso s chicken tasted like bad fish - not even sure why that would be. It was gross. The brisket fried rice was mushy and salty. Not worth $5 for this food, much less $50. Good lord.
