I have been going to this place since 2000. I was in town and wanted some louisiana food while in Austin. It was always a good spot to get my fix without going back home to louisiana. I ordered queso with crawfish. The crawfish did not taste right. I ordered a shrimp po boy and only 4 shrimp on it. Come on. I also ordered boil shrimp, and they used boil corn. Come on. This place needs to bring back the people that kept food quality up. It is sad they have gone down hill

I got the gumbo via delivery, both shrimp and Cajun. They both have an overwhelming odor of spray paint or nail polish remover. Its genuinely inedible, as if a can of something toxic fell into the pot. Its possible that their ingredients are expired or stale, or that they use some type of ingredient that has a very pungent, offensive fragrance, but Ive had their gumbo in the restaurant before and it wasnt like this. If this stuff is as-intended I dont know why youd make it smell like this. Mostly sharing this as a public safety message. I called their restaurant and they put me on hold to get a manager but they never came. I have liked this restaurant til now, just wanna make sure people wont die consuming this.

Sadly, this might be the beginning of the end for the old Shoal Creek Saloon. My wife and I came in Thursday May 9th, sat inside and watched everyone around us get served whilst being ignored ourselves. Long story short, we left hungry after 30 minutes without ever receiving our drinks (they never took our food order), etc. We left and went to Lil Easy on the east side (which was KILLER btw), so something good did come out of the terrible service we received at Shoal Creek. About 3 weeks ago we came in for crawfish and they were delicious, to be fair, but this establishment is kind of a gamble. I hope this place survives, Ive seen too many old school Austin institutions bite the dust and it kills me give an Austin classic a bad review, but Ive had more mediocre experiences at SCS than good ones, and mediocrity does not survive in Austins current dining landscape. Lets hope they start caring again... until then, well be getting our Cajun fill over at Lil Easy.

April 2024 On our way to visit Pease Park we stopped at Shoal Creek Saloon to enjoy some tasty catfish. I was worried about parking since it was lunchtime and only a few spots available. Otherwise would have to park behind it on the street next to the park and walk here, but luckily there was one available in front. It was a dangerous spot where would have to back out directly on to Lamar with poor sight of traffic. Luckily there was a traffic light nearby and turned my car on, waited for the light to turn red and no car coming and jumped into my vehicle and backed out quickly. But before this vehicle challenge my wife and I walked inside and sat at a table on the deck facing Shoal Creek with a nice view of downtown. We both ordered fried catfish but my wife got sides and I just got hushpuppies (basket). The catfish was excellent. The breading had great flavor. My wife ordered mashed potatoes and fried okra. I tasted both but they gave her a lot of okra, so we shared it. The sides were great too where the mashed potatoes had a nice buttery taste. She was admiring what others ordered like big salad and crawfish. This place has great atmosphere and delicious food along with a nice friendly staff. January 2023 Needed to get out and explore eateries I have not been to in a long while, so on this day it was Shoal Creek Saloon. Parking might be tough here but luckily found a spot. At first I did not see a door in front but just walked to the back where there was a large patio and was seated there with a great view of Shoal Creek. I spotted a few turtles and have a nice partial view of downtown. After going inside to explore I did notice people leaving from the front. The service here is very friendly and has that Louisiana atmosphere. I ordered the Catfish Plate with Hushpuppies, Cole Slaw, and Red Beans with Andouille. This place celebrates the cajun culture mixed with an Austin vibe. Soon my order arrived and tried my catfish. It was just fantastic and perfect with the dipping sauces. It had great tasty flavor and very warm. The sides were just as good and enjoyed the red beans along with the hushpuppies. With all the entanglements with flooding and fire this place seems to rebound quickly to keep serving great cajun food feeding hungry souls.

Been going there for 20 years. Last night we had nonexistent service and some of the grossest food ever. We had get up from the table 3 times to get waters and other basic supplies . Our order was mishandled, and then the chicken fried steak was like leather rubber, so we had to send it back. Then, of course, they screwed up the check and still charged me for that which I had to deal with today. Now I have some manager Brian calling me names on the phone like retard cussing me out, literally going bananas, yelling at me because I commented that his server had just told me she was the only person there clearly not true lol! because the manager was also there & wanted to talk to me. Total insanity, but provided us wt much laughter after I finally hung up on Brian Total clown show comedy! This place has completely gone downhill like so many other places in Austin. At this point, you should just let MML take it over like everything else!

My family and I visited today cause I was craving crawfish. The food was extremely good, the waitress could have had a better attitude if she was going to steal a tip from us. We ordered $98 of food. When we asked for the ticket she came back with a little device in her hand stating the bill was $135. I m extremely good with numbers and expected the bill to be $100 tops. Gave the girl $200 to pay the $135 ticket however she sent someone else to give us our change back. It wasn t until I got home and was thinking how was I off on the bill. I decided to go online and reorder online to see what the total was and as I thought the bill online was $98. This waitress included her own tip of $37 on the bill cause as I thought back she didn t hand us a paper bill she read the amount out loud as she was reading the little device she had in her hand. Beware and always ask for a paper bill before paying cause in my eyes she stole her tip. A tip that wasn t even worth $37 as her attitude wasn t the best. Like I said the food was good, but now I m aware of the games these waitresses can play. I will be back, but I will not be dining in cause the trust was broken.

Crawfish - Cajun style by a creek this is what a Cajun crawfish boil should be (in a downtown setting.) (I have a different top spot for Viet-Cajun crawfish.) Come hungry leave happy - every time. I love how there is more Cajun boil seasoning on the table. I like to add it to my drawn butter to kick up the heat. Pro tip: ask for gloves to eat your crawfish with. I also will use a take out bag as a makeshift bib.

After a long day of biking along Austin and the river, my partner and I stumbled upon Shoal Creek enticed by its picturesque location right on the riverbank. While the setting and atmosphere were undeniably charming, our dining experience left much to be desired. Regrettably, the food fell short of expectations, as it appeared to be predominantly ultra-processed and pre-cooked, merely reheated in a microwave. This approach to culinary preparation lacked the freshness and quality one would hope for, especially after a day of outdoor activity. While the convenience of grabbing a quick bite or a refreshing bottle of Coke may be appealing in such a scenic spot, I would caution against expecting anything more than basic sustenance from the menu. .terrible wine. For those seeking a memorable dining experience to complement their picturesque surroundings, this restaurant may not be the ideal choice.

I actually enjoyed my experience much more than I had expected from such a well-worn establishment as this. Yes, it has the faint smell of vomit covered by layers of cleaner over the years as in many old Austin bars, because a bar this is - first, and a restaurant second. Thus, it has multiple bars of varying sizes, televisions blaring sports and tables crammed into every space to accommodate crowds is its otherwise very small space. Despite the fame and no need to try - the food and service is pretty great. Service was prompt and professional, with food and drinks arriving timely. The half shrimp poboy was tasty and very proportional to price. My only issue is it comes with no sides. All in all, a pretty great Cajun restaurant and bar. Vegetarian options: Nope Parking: Absolutely atrocious Kid-friendliness: Its a bar! Wheelchair accessibility: Roll on in!

This is a surprising little place from the outside, when you re coming down Lamar in downtown Austin, if you re not looking you pretty much miss it. However, I was at the 7-Eleven next-door and smelled some smoked delicious meat. I followed my nose into the saloon, to my surprise, it looked as though it was just a very small place, with a small kitchen, kind of a local place to go for locals. However, I ordered the double bone pork chop meal. The meat was so juicy and smoked to perfection. The green beans had little chunks of ham in it, not sliced ham, real ham. The mashed potatoes that comes with it was so homemade and so fluffy and delicious, it was real potatoes. So while waiting on the food, I walked towards the back to look for the ladies room and saw a door leading out the back. I stepped outside. It is the most beautiful, covered patio bar right above the creek. What a jewel to find. I love this place I will be going back for that pork chop meal. By the way, if you go for the burger it looks pretty good, I saw a persons plate. It looked as though it was a Smashburger, but thick and it looked delicious. You must try this place. The drinks there are on point as well.

They do run out of crawfish during busier days while it is in season so go early if you re trying to get some. We got about 1lb per person plus some potatoes and corn and it was perfect. The crawfish meat is relatively small so we usually get 1lb of shrimp too to make sure we are full.

We were told to take a seat. Had to wait 15-20 minutes for a menu. Went there for crawfish. Anything other than crawfish is an add on. Including BUTTER. Flavor was meh.

Just go there for crawfish during crawfish season. They are not as good as some but better than a lot and a funky way laid back atmosphere

We went here for brunch on the day of The University of Texas at Austin s graduation ceremony at DKS. Shoal Creek Saloon doesnt take reservations, but theres a call-ahead waitlist that we utilized. GETTING SEATED: even though we gave the # of people in our party when we called to be put on the waitlist, they were unprepared to seat us together. The manager whod just come on duty was willing to rearrange tables to get us seated on the porch/patio, but wed found the picnic benches to the left of the large, covered porch. It was shady, gave us room to move around to talk with each other, & enabled the children the ability to run down to the creek & explore. It was nice & breezy & the perfect setup for our crew DINING: unfortunately, by the time we were situated, brunch was over, & I missed out on the mimosas at brunch prices. We had an assortment of appetizers like crawfish queso & loaded queso fries, & IDK what else. Almost everyone was pleased with their delicious Cajun/Creole entrees, especially the boiled crawfish, which is rarely duplicated outside of NOLA. I requested a combination of 2 of the cups & bowls items, jambalaya & gumbo, but asked to omit the gumbos white rice & dump the gumbo over the jambalaya instead. I was more than willing to pay for each cup to make what we call jumbo gumbo, & its the best of both worlds! The poor waiter looked at me like I was crazy. Even though I was willing to pay for each cup, he was still a bit skeptical about my order. I get it because its an unusual request. After all, this is my hometown cooking in a state known for amazing brisket & Tex-Mex. (We lived in NTX for a total of 10 yrs & loved it there.) I was willing to pay for each dish/cup, but maybe, this is the start of a new menu item? The kitchen must have been skeptical, too, because each item was brought out separately, but the gumbos white skipped was omitted as requested. I had to ask for a larger bowl IOT pour the gumbo over the jambalaya. We skipped dessert because we had to get ready for graduation, & I think that Id remember eating fruit cobbler & bread pudding. CRITIQUE: I was disappointed that the seafood batter was fish fry instead of flour-based which is whats used in NOLA; so, no fried seafood or shrimp poboy for me. SERVICE & STAFF: it was BUSY. The wait staff was friendly but busy; therefore, the manager whod just gotten there jumped in to get us started. He was polite, apologetic, etc, a total pro. It was refreshing to see someone willing to do a job that was clearly beneath his managerial role just to help a group of patrons. There were a few glitches with getting the right dish or drink to the right person, but we were flexible given that we had more than 10 people & were moving around to catch up with family. Overall, Id love to go back the next time that Im down there & enjoy the atmosphere & food in a smaller group without having a deadline to be somewhere else. Parking: The parking lot is small for the # of people that can be seated indoors & outdoors. My husband dropped us off & parked on a side street. Of course, right after he left, parking spots opened up, & my daughter, honorary daughter, & niece were able to park on the premise. Kid-friendliness: The menu options, as with most places, were limited, but they were what children like to eat. Since we sat outside & not underneath the covered porch/patio, the children could run down to the creek & explore.

It was ok. I m not to familiar with the foods of New Orleans but a friend of mine is and we went to eat and have a few beers. He was not impressed with the food. Service was good though.

Sitting on the back porch on a pretty day makes this place very special. It backs up to Shoal Creek Park with Austin skyscrapers in the background. Combined with some Cajun cooking, hands down cant be beat.

Come for the crawfish, stay for the hospitality! The food is killer and the service was amazing! There is an abundance of seating outside and inside. Better to plan to park down the street or Uber because there is very limited parking.

It can be difficult to find a seat on the patio sometimes as it stays busy, but we got the perfect little table with a view of the creek this time. Theres always plenty of indoor seating every time Ive gone. Parking lot is small but there is plenty of street parking by the nearby park, which is a very short walk. The crawfish boudin balls are my favorite appetizer. Definitely go during crawfish season and get the boil! Cooked perfectly with great seasoning. Our server was friendly, and offered some great suggestions for how to order our crawfish. We spent quite a bit, but had several cocktails so it was expected to add up. Have been here several times in the past and will definitely be back! Parking: Free lot is very small but there is plenty of paid street parking by the nearby park.

Very good Cajun style food. I had a fried shrimp po boy with a side of bouldin. Bouldin was good and spicy, po-boy were great, bread on them is very tasty. There is outside seating and indoor seating, if you want to sit outside, there is a list, but seating inside is first come first serve. Have a some drinks, watch some sports, and eat some great food. By the huge Saints helmet in front, I am guessing this would be the Saints bar of Austin.
