The museum is cute, especially the Rooftop, however I didnt exactly enjoy the three different exhibits that were currently there. It s something to do but not entirely worth $10.00 per person. If you enjoy abstract contemporary art you might find it to be enjoyable. But for the price and how long it takes to clear the mesuem roughly 45 minutes...not exactly a great time.

This museum is in an eye-catching building right in downtown Austin -- I walked past a few times before I finally relented and went inside. Totally worth it! I had a great time checking out their latest exhibition (about nature and humanity, which is kind of My Thing). The museum only costs $10 and that gets you into their sister museum too, which is imo a great deal!

The Austin contemporary is two fabulous floors of revolving exhibits and a stunning rooftop venue. The roof is not only shaded, but provides a fun view of the mirrored letters and surrounding buildings. Though the contemporary typically charges for admission, they are open for free several days during the year. Parking is easiest on Sundays when neighborhood street parking is free.

I really enjoyed my time with my mentor at this gallery space. Downtown mid-day on a Saturday is tough parking-wise and there s no lot designated for this venue. Bought a ticket in advance, and it quick and easy to check in! The main artist s had two exhibits that we saw and they received tons of praise. The host behind the desk was very helpful in giving background for the work, the layout of the different experiences and also had some suggestions on what other galleries we should visit as well. This space is much smaller than the Laguna space, from what I ve heard/experiences. I enjoyed my time!

Very limited. Only some good exhibits on 2 small floors. The third floor was closed due to a scheduled evening event. That made the visit even shorter and more limited. If feels like a mini museum. Why dont they hold events on days when the museum is closed to the public, like Monday and Tuesday?

The Asian Chick(Torey) just sits in the front on her MacBook & phone all day. But besides that theres little to no art work at best ( walked the whole place in 5 minutes max). One of the worst contemporaries I ve been too. Plus u have to pay admission, 10$. So if you want to be blue balled and have 5 minutes to spare. Come here. 0/5 would recommend.

Went on a free admission day. It was much smaller and having much less artwork than we thought. Two floors have artwork from only one artist. Also we wish there would be more descriptions for each artwork to make visitors more engaged. Overall good location, friendly staff, and nice rooftop. There was nothing going on at rooftop when we visited, but it was good view. I will probably go back on a free day for new exhibition sometime.

The biggest waste of money. We put in 5 min max. About 8 mediocre pics downstairs. All the same with minor differences. Not worth looking at imo. Upstairs was a bunch of 5×12 type plans of wood with paint on them. I was embarrassed for them.

The contemporary calls itself, a museum, and it really isn t. It s a gallery. There are no great museums in Austin because if you count the UT owned museum and the Blanton well they re lackluster and not too avant-garde. Go to Houston and Dallas for art! That said this museum/Gallery often has original and thought-provoking work. I went on the museum free day, and it was lovely to see families and all age people dressed very artsy. Because of its size you ll really be finished in less than an hour so plan your day accordingly.

I ve wandered in here spontaneously a few times, and despite the space not being full, I ve always thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits. Even some of the smaller ones usually had an interactive aspect or two that I remember spending more time getting lost in. For the price, I think it s always worth it, especially considering the free entry to the Laguna Gloria site, my absolute favorite!! (W a view, less staff oversight, and tons of selfie ops) Several bad reviews mention the Blanton, but I see quality over quantity here. The one time I went to the Blanton, sure it had more, but I was not impressed. It was Andy Warhol and we spent most of the time making fun of the art. Lolol it s super repetitive. Yeah the Campbell soup one is iconic, but that same filter on everything? Very repetitive. I will say, sometimes the staff is a bit curious . Speaking of which, I was once reprimanded for touching the art, yet I experienced curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. I only touched it bc there was a cabinet in one exhibit, so I opened the door. I may have been told it wasn t ok BUT THERE WAS INDEED a few things to see inside the cabinet! I m still satisfied I opened it Membership offers even more perks. Special events, etc. Always call in advance no matter what. Can t wait to check out the latest!

All of the art was very beautiful but the whole experience was ruined by a rude blond with her hair in a bun security guard who said you re blocking the art and your not allowed to have photoshoots, just take a picture and leave when my friends and i decided to take a picture in front of a contemporary art piece on the second floor and the continued to follow us and make ugly faces. This was the first picture i took in-front of an art piece and mind you there were families and other people taking MULTIPLE photos in-front of many pieces. But in the area we were in there were no people and we weren t blocking ANY art so this comment was disgustingly rude and made the whole experience awful. We came to visit from out of town and didn t even feel comfortable taking a picture like other people because of how awful she treated us. This was unfair treatment and completely uncalled for. I suggest training security staff better because the art was no longer enjoyable after this incident.

I m a massive art fan and I expected so much more than the sub optimal definition of an art museum in a major city. No photos because there was nothing worth to take. Also seem to be very singular focused around either social injustice or gender equality and art is more than just that. Especially a contemporary art museum in a major city.

Its possible I just picked a bad time to go, but this place was quite a disappointment. The space appears much more grand from the outside than it is once youre inside, and there is a huge feeling of wasted space throughout the gallery. I found it trivial to get through the exhibits in less than 30 minutes, which made it feel shallow and overpriced. Additionally, like most modern art museums, it felt really hyperfocused on identity and trendy social justice narratives. Its a bit banal at best and sometimes wanders into offensively preachy, non-inclusive, and/or narcissistic to an extent that it detracts from the actual art. Heres a radical suggestion - how about we actually put the focus back on art instead of on self-obsession and the ideological cult of intersectional feminism. All in all, there are many free art galleries that surpass this one. They need both a different direction and better funding I guess.

Austin is home to some very unique art galleries, but few compare to this one, they do a great job of bringing in great local artist and giving them a platform to speak freely and truly express themselves. On top of that they like to include interactive art which adds another layer to the story the artist are weaving. Despite it being a small (about 30 -45 mins) its packed with unique pieces. They also host free soiree s from time to time which id love if they made a recurring thing. But overall id recommend this place to anyone who loves art and a good time.

I cannot convey how magical the current (or past, depending on when you read this) exhibit is. This was the first time Id seen so many of Daniels works gathered in one place before and the result was kind of overwhelming. I visited on a Thursday (free admission day!) at 7pm and while there was a few other people in the space, it was spaced out and organized in a way that it felt like I had it all to myself. Bravo to whoever curated the exhibit as I found it extremely thoughtful with just a touch of the playfulness that comes with Daniels work. I have seen some other reviews of people who didnt like the presence of employees within the exhibit but I found them nonintrusive. Of particular note was seeing Daniels piano set up the very way he had it at his home -- its hard to put into words what it felt like standing in front of it. The upstairs gallery was slightly underwhelming after the visual and emotional feast of the Daniel Johnston exhibit but the rooftop offers up amazing views of downtown (even if these views are slightly obstructed) especially as the sun is setting. I used to work down the street from The Contemporary and would pop by sometimes on my lunch break -- no matter what exhibits are currently showing I always find it to be a calming and inspiring place.

I guess Im not a high dollar patron. Its more than not being able to get tickets. I enter my membership number because the website doesnt recognize the name. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries to get in. Each event is filled. Opening the calendar, it says there are no events, but I know that there are events. Here, they may be trying to fix a review.

While the space is small, they really utilize it to show a great exhibition! I enjoyed the museum and will return!

From one artist to the many others, there is nothing, and I mean nothing that cant stop, or define the inner peace, love and Harmony that surrounds us all and this time of passion, I have tried to reach out look for me I guess its just lines and lines colors are colors but art is not just art, it sure soul its your imagination coming to life its your creations outside of a uncreated mentality thank you for everything that I have seen their it gives me a new meaning to damper for my horizon

We came on the free day and I m so glad we didn t pay. This place is super small and parking is tough even on the middle of a weekday. The employee who welcomed us was nice but the employees on the two floors of the museum were too much. They told us we can t use flash photography - ok no problem. Then they said we can t take video...ok. The employee (an older woman in a plaid skirt) proceeded to follow us around, never being more than two feet away. Her pretentious attitude towards us was apparent from the moment we entered. We didn t do anything wrong, and we aren t teenagers so I don t know what we did to deserve this treatment. It was utterly unnecessary. All the art was wacky, and only from one artist. Parking in a structure nearby was $3/15 minutes. Unbelievable. Please save your money and time, go to the Blanton art museum instead.

Close to UT and if you are hungry, they can accommodate. We took our son here after the marathon, and he ate all of his steak and the parts of the ample portions that my wife and I could not finish. We all had different cuts of meat and all were excellent. The staff was very good also.
