Went to Barley Swine with my spouse on March 2023. This was a pleasant & unique experience. Our waiter said the hardest decision we had to make was what to drink & they were right! I love the rotating menu, atmosphere, & service were definitely a 10/10. Would definitely do this again!

An excellent meal with some definite surprises. Unexpected combinations of flavors mostly worked, with a few exceptions we didnt care for. Those shiitake soup-dumplings are a very good time. Good wine list and by the glass options.

Honestly fantastic. I have no doubt a Michelin star is in their future when the Guide comes to Texas. The food was all excellent but the duck course especially blew us away. Our three young children all ate the tasting menu and loved it. The team tailored to them by removing spice but otherwise they had every course. I cant eat fish or shellfish due to allergies. The team did not just give me a vegetarian option but made a real effort. The quail was delicious. The wine pairings matched very well. I would definitely return to Austin to eat here again. The best food we have had in Texas during our trip. We felt it was excellent value for money.

Most of the menu was good, but for the time and money it wasnt somewhere Im going to tell all my friends to visit. We ate quickly but another table (which arrived after us) got their 2nd and 3rd plates while we were waiting for our 3rd, I think the food runners must have either forgotten about us or delivered to the wrong table. Nothing was bad at all, it just wasnt amazing like we expected for the price.

Barley Swine is an absolute bargain if you can snag a $85 summer deal, and it s still worth it at the regular $115 price. They will accommodate many dietary restrictions, which was much, much appreciated. Barley Swine has a strong beverage program. Cocktails were great. The bartender can whip up something off-menu based on your preferences. The wine pairing thoughtfully consisted of smaller pours so guests can taste all the wine without getting uncomfortably drunk. Some glasses were quite interesting, including a natural red (not to my tastes but fun to try!) and a Coteaux de Layon. The cooking techniques were impeccable. All the proteins were cooked really well. However, the sauces in general needed some acidity to give lift and pop, as well as some way to concentrate flavors. The soubise dashi shouldn t be called that as it sets unfair expectations. It ended up perceived as watered down soubise or a murky dashi. Concentrate the dashi before mixing with the soubise. The restaurant has tons of potential. The execution was there. If Barley Swine can lean more into Texan flavors to make themselves stand out in the national fine dining scene, it can be a tourist dining destination. Ask: What makes Texas food Texan? How can we make out-of-state folks learn what Texas cuisine is all about?

This was my third time to Barley Swine. It was such an enjoyable time. It s so fun to get all the surprises from the kitchen. Such unique flavors. My son and I agreed, our least favorite menu item was the rib eye this time. I guess they can t be perfect! We added the dumplings as an extra to the tasting menu, had a couple of cocktails a piece and coffee with dessert. The final bill was a blow to the pocket book but so thankful for the opportunity to dine at such an Austin staple. ***Added photos from experience #3

Highlights included shrimp dumplings with uni, perfectly seared duck sausage with bacon and melt-in-your-mouth 40+ dry aged rib eye. Each dish was a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. Our server Cohen was exceptional, adding to the service with knowledgeable and friendly service. The chefs tasting menu continually surprised us with flavor and was delighted. Dined solo at the chef s counter, zero conversation from the kitchen staff, which was strange for a nice restaurant. Overall the food was ok but the price was steep. Here is the rundown of the food I had: Farm bouquet 1/5 Vegetables were dry, nice ranch and quinoa crunch, weird to ask guest to pick up the food by hand Blue fin tuna 3/5 A little bit too salty. Not liking the seared part, kinda take away the freshness of the tuna. Baked oyster 4/5 Great presentation. Very flavorful and the broccoli paired well with the oyster. Halibut 4/5 Great flavor of the dashi and snow pea is a great addition. The pork belly is just there?? Pairing savory item with seafood is so risky and often doesn t end well. They mentioned the smokeness of the fish? Didn t taste it Duck 3/5 High expectation but not sure with the thin sliced approach. Mushroom lost its meatyness from the thin slice as well. Good flavor otherwise Ribeye 4/5 Decent steak, cooked to perfection. Sauce is slightly overpowering Donut 5/5 Best dish of the night. Savory donut is the way to go. Amazing execution with the leftover steak meat. Amazing beet cheese on top Strawberry &celery dip n dots 4/5 Great flavor, good dessert Carrot cake 3/5 It s just an average carrot cake? Pretty presentation though

Food 4/5, People/Service 5/5, Atmosphere 5/5, Price 1/5. I had been a couple of times many years ago, and while it was expensive then, I always thought it was worth it. My recent visit revealed a different kind of expensive I wasnt ready for. While so much of it was great, at the end of the day, the business to consumer relationship is a value exchange. And the value simply wasnt there. Over $400 for two people with two drinks each. Id spend that for a special occasion where the food ended up being some of the best Ive ever had, but it was not that level.

Last night was the second time weve come to Barley Swine and again, we were not disappointed. Before I go in to the food, the service was fantastic. Chelsea was our server and was super friendly and attentive the entire meal. We had several cocktails, each of which was really interesting and presented beautifully. I highly recommend the Rabbit, Run and the Hard Beet Freestyle. Now to the food... I like leaving our input both for the restaurant and other patrons. (See the menu in one of the photos) Top of the meal for us was the Blue Fin Tuna (my fav), Yellowtail, Muscovy Duck (boyfriends fav), Donut, and Dip n Dots. The tuna was cook really nicely and had a great depth of flavor with the other elements in the dish. The yellowtail (a super close second for both of us) was crispy and came with a very tasty sous vide sauce. The duck came with both breast and leg and was cooked perfect. The donut was a fun dish with the meat (caramelized and tender) being our favorite element. The dip n dots were surprisingly delicious. I could honestly eat an entire container of those dots. Less than exciting for us was the Farm Bouquet, Baked Oyster, Akaushi Ribeye, and Carrot Cake. I liked the farm bouquet more than the boy did with his complaint being the crunchy stuff on the side was a little gritty. He wanted something with a little more punch at the start of the meal. The oyster was good but it unfortunately came after the tuna. Considering the complexity of flavor in the tuna dish, the oyster was kind of muted. We felt the ribeye wasnt the most tender piece of meat, but Ill say we dont eat a ton of red meat in our usual day to day diets. I personally thought the carrot cake was delicious. Its one of my boyfriends favorite desserts and he just felt like he had had better elsewhere. Overall, we had a wonderful evening with another great tasting menu from Barley Swine. We look forward to visiting again in the future to see what new flavors and dishes the come up with.

Pricey for sure, but an amazing experience! Worth treating yourself for a special occasion. We came for the winter 2022 tasting menu ($115 per person). It was absolutely mindblowing; every dish was a unique combination of flavors and textures and definitely nothing Ive ever had before! The kohlrabi dumpling with mustard cream, smoked trout chips, ceviche, and tres leches cake were my favorites. As for drinks, I loved the sugarland express cocktail ($13). Tasting menus usually arent filling, but this was actually a generous amount of food and we were satisfied! The space is beautiful and cozy, and we had a lovely time.

A poor version of a European restaurant. Lows: average food, dire service. $400+ for 2, really average food. When I fed back that the main (tough beef) was poor, I was offered a coffee by our entirely disinterested server I can t imagine this place existing in London, let alone getting a decent rep. Avoid. EDIT: the GM handled our review exceptionally well, to be fair. We were refunded most of the bill, which was very generous, and his professionalism in his response was exceptional. If we were in town for longer then we absolutely would have tried again.

We did the tasting menu for two plus a few add-ons. The food was great for the most part. I d say 3 dishes stood out from the ten or so courses. We have nothing negative to say about the food per-say, but we were far from able to justify the price for the overall experience. We could see how many people were feverishly working in the kitchen, more bodies than in the dinning room, so I don t mean to discredit the effort and quality of ingredients. Service was outstanding. Maybe that s why the price is justifiable to the owner. It s a decent place and probably worth another try if getting a single plate vs the tasting menu. We didn t leave Austin saying we d come back for Barley Wine if back, but that s not to say you shouldn t try.

We were offered a significant refund and all of our feedback that wasn t listened to at the time of dining was taken on board. Couldn t have asked for a better resolution.

I am a fine dining skeptic. There arent many upscale joints Ill return to. But I will keep an eye on Barley Swines menu for a return. Its thoughtful dining. It really was an experience that was casual, fun, delicious and memorable. Service was present without hovering. The fixed courses made it simple and my favorite dishes werent what I would have ordered. They were amazing about substituting ingredients for my pregnant wife. The only downside was my cocktail was meh, but hardly a knock against the experience. Worth the price, worth a review, worth a return.

Nice atmosphere, great service, the food is sooooo overrated. Was expecting a lot because Barley Swine is on every food list, but it could be my fault that I was expecting too much. Every course they bring out, place in front of you, and explain to you what is in the dish. If they didnt explain what each course was, its a mystery what youre eating. Almost everything is covered in a sauce or ingredients are changed so much its not even recognizable. There are some flavors that are nice, but texture and temperature are off. Just very pretentious when I just want good food. Parking: complimentary valet is included

Yellowtail was overcooked Dumplings were overwhelmed with vinegar Oyster just tasted like bad broccoli and cheese Grapefruit icecream was over-bittered The other dishes were just okay. Over-salted on one or two. Long waits between dishes, and then sometimes serving 2 at the same time near the end. Not a good tasting menu experience. We picked up pizza afterwards.

Devin is an incredible asset to barley swine and I hope they appreciate him as much as we did last night. My only complaint is that, after spending close to 500 dollars for two people, we left feeling hungry. I understand fine dining is curated around small bites, but I don t think it should be leaving feeling like I wish I had more food served. I hope bigger portions can be served in the future as the food is absolutely incredible.

They commit to the chefs tasting menu concept and do it extremely well. The wine pairings added to each dish and were worth the price. Service was impeccable. Water glasses were never empty. Even the dinnerware was unusually nice and added to the experience. Many similar restaurants time limit your meal so they can use the same table multiple times per night - Barley Swine does not limit, and I think they actually slowed their cadence for us as we savored our meal and focused on conversation. Top notch food and service. Try at least once. Parking limited but there is valet.

Came here for a birthday dinner and the food was great! My main complaint would be that we both left feeling hungry and were shocked at how little food we ate. Great ambience and service, but the portions should reflect the price. Don t think I d come back and for the price I d go to Uchi or Emmer & Rye.

This restaurant is always a hit. Their tasting menus and service are outstanding. My only complaint would be the prices. Currently $115 for their tasting menu but if you can spare it you will definitely enjoy the experience. Drinks a bit on the higher end too but again they are tasty. Just a refreshing change from regular menu dining. There were 3 of us so thats why you see 3 items on the plates in some of the pictures. You wont leave hungry but not overstuffed either. Well done Barley Swine!

We had a great night at Barley Swine. The service was warm and attentive, the decor unique and relaxed and the food creative and tasty. The Menu Fixe is amazing. Very French/Japanese multi-course meal that builds like a novel to a satisfying conclusion. Delicate, varied in flavors and textures, fish, foul, meat, complex, with all sorts of fine little touches, sauces, little bits (duck cracklings!). Doodads, if you will. But best of all, extremely tasty.

We had a wonderful dinner last weekend at Barley Swine! The food, wine, service, atmosphere, and cleanliness were all top notch. We went for a special occasion and indicated as much on our reservation. When we arrived, there was a special menu and we were greeted with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. Our service was excellent. Our server was amazing and the manager Stefan came to say hello and chat a couple times during the meal. We got great wine recommendations based on our preferences and the bottle we chose paired wonderfully with the meal. The staff even brought out a couple complimentary dishes that we greatly enjoyed. I would highly recommend Barley Swine and we will be coming back again soon. In my opinion it is one of the best restaurants (if not the best) in Austin!

I recognize that many people love this place, so Im not saying Barley Swine is bad. Im only offering my own personal experience: we were both underwhelmed by the menu. In fact, I found the duck to be so chewy that I stopped trying to eat it, but theres nothing we couldve done. In a normal restaurant of this caliber, when a dish fails to impress, you can tell the chef and they can replace it with something else. But here, with a set menu, there is no choice. I didnt even get a chance to tell the server that the duck was inedible because nobody asked me how it was. The dishes we liked, we didnt love, except for the foie gras add-on and the desserts. The desserts were both truly well-done. Compliments to the pastry chef. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. We paid $350 for a birthday meal and both left unsatisfied and wanting more food. This is probably our last visit here until the format changes back to a la carte the way it used to be.

Perfect last dinner before leaving Austin. I had a lot of good food when I was here, but this place is head and shoulders above all of the other places. All of the dishes were taste bombs, and the paired wines made it all even better. Service was extraordinary and extremely attentive. The place itself has a very nice and cosy atmosphere. I recommend to get a seat at the kitchen counter to witness the well oiled machine of an experienced kitchen in action.

Nice place, the music was very moderate so we could speak easily. I found the early dishes quite good, fresh and lemony. The second half was heavier and too salty for my taste. For the price point, I was expecting the service to be invisible but they were nice and knowledgeable. The parking situation is bad. Consider ubering if you come at a busy time.

Came in and had the prix fixe dinner. The welcoming hosts were able to fit me in just before my initial reservation. Chelsea guided me thru the menu very well as a first timer and paced the courses perfectly. (I often frequent the sister company, Odd Duck; one of my favs). I have to say this is one of my new favs for special occasions and in my Top 5 best restaurant (experiences) in Austin. Everyone flowed so smoothly and effortless in their roles. It was symphonic to watch. They offer incredible add-ons/supplements and the caviar brioche isn t to be missed. It s rich, decadent, soft, flavorful, and worth the splurge. I should ve ordered two of the shiitake dumplings (or a full order in my case). Other standuts include the chèvre, kale donut, yellowtail, and grilled flatbread. Did I mention the caviar brioche that I ordered two of? 10/10 Parking: Complimentary.

I recently dined at a restaurant that had fantastic service and smooth restaurant operations. The ambience was great - we really enjoyed sitting at the counter and watching (and smelling!) the fireplace. The food was a bit of a mixed bag. Some dishes were absolutely amazing and hit the mark, while others missed the mark. Despite this, we still left feeling satisfied overall. One thing to note is that the restaurant was a bit overpriced in my opinion. While the service and ambience were top-notch, the price tag for the food was a bit steep. Overall, I would rate this restaurant 3 stars. The service, ambience, and restaurant operations were excellent, but the food was a bit on the adventures side for my liking. If youre willing to splurge a bit on a dining experience with great service and a cozy ambience, this could be a great restaurant to consider. Review assisted by ChatGPT

A very unique dining experience. The chef works very hard to balance a wide palette of ingredients and beautiful presentation of food. Be prepared for an overwhelming assault of flavors with the multi-course experience. Though it is expensive, it will provide a very memorable eating experience.
