The cutest little restaurant, the inside is decorated nice, and the service was amazing, our waiter was on top of it, very respectful and quick. The food was really good as well, the enchiladas were so yummy and the beans and rice very flavorful, as well as the salsa. We will def eat there again.

The El Fenix chain of restaurants is one of my favorites, they even have my most favorite salsa... but this place Is not part of that chain and it is WAAAAYYY BETTER!!! I got 2 enchiladas one beef with chili con carne and one chicken with Verde sauce, absolutely amazing! The chips were house made and the salsa was the perfect amount of spicy (which I dont like spicy salsa), rice and beans were on point! I wish this place was a chain in other cities as I work all over the state and live out of town. If you live here or passing through, you must stop! I promise you will enjoy!!!

I havent tried this restaurant since it reopened. Inside is Remodeled and smells fresh. Menu is smaller. Servings on the smaller size compared to other local Mexican restaurants. I order chicken tostada, chicken was plain boiled chick, no seasoning. Rice and refried beats were good. Hubs ordered enchiladas, he said tasty and his beef tostada was good. Service adequate, but they werent busy.

We visited on a Saturday afternoon. Service was extremely slow from start to finish. Lots of flies in the dining room made it difficult to enjoy the experience. Decor is the best thing here. The food was fair. My beans and rice were lukewarm. We ordered an enchilada plate with sauce on the side....it was on the enchiladas. Server did offer to fix it. I ordered soft beef taco and bean toastada. Taco was small, more like a street taco. Salsa was very mild, both red and green. It tasted ok but no spice at all. The chips were crisp and fresh. We came on the night they reopened a few months ago and we were underwhelmed. Our experience today confirmed our fears....El Fenix is just not as good as it used to be.This was probably our last visit.

You know how the Genie tells Aladdin that one of the rules is he cant wish anyone back from the dead? Its not a pretty picture, & I dont like doing it! He was right. It is far better to mourn the dead - this is what we should all have been okay with doing when El Fenix closed. It was a great loss of a beloved, hometown original. Its just sad to watch the reanimated corpse of the current incarnation stumble around trying to pretend to be its old self. I want to be clear here, this is a third strike situation, not a knee-jerk reaction. After choosing not to wait nearly an hour at another restaurant that was packed, we decided to give El Fenix just one last try because we *wanted* it to be great. Unfortunately, we sat and waited... and waited. The manager on duty stood less than 10 ft from us having a conversation that included his complete confusion about why they werent busier. He could see that there was no server waiting on any of the tables. He finished chatting & walked away without checking on any of the tables. When our server finally made it back around, I asked if she was the only one working - she was. We offered to pay for our iced tea & left. There is no big mystery why this former local gem is no longer busy on a Saturday night. Its being managed terribly. RIP El Fenix, you didnt deserve this. Original review for the previous incarnation: Love this spot! Perfectly hot salsa & breakfast anytime. Also, they serve an enchilada with their fajitas, so thats a win!

Since reopening, my wife and I have eaten at El Fenix four times and I have to say, the recipes are NOT the originals. Ive been eating El Fenix since I was about four years old and its as if they took the original recipes and attempted to tweak them. The food doesnt even hold a flame to the original recipes. Its missing the consistency and the love that Olivia put into her cooking. Everytime that my wife and I have been, weve paid premium prices for poor quality food, including the $8 for Velveeta queso. Seriously?? Yes, seriously. I am tremendously sad to say, but we will not be returning.

Only downside is parking. I parked right in front of the restaurant which faces a busy road and can be tough backing out since the location sits RIGHT AT a corner with a stoplight and it was evening (Dark). Overall I d definitely go back and eat there again.

I was disappointed when the owner closed it because she wanted to retire and had no one else to run it. I was excited when I learned the business had been purchased and the new owner was learning the original recipes. Unfortunately, it appears the new owner decided to change things instead of keeping with the original recipes. Or decided to cut costs and change food vendors, while adding a big price hike to the now simplified menu. Lunch was almost $70 (with tip) for three people. My plate was terrible. I think its the first time in my life that enchiladas have been inedible. The second persons tacos plate was disgusting (like wet dog food in a taco shell). The third persons plate had sauce out of a can. Nothing authentic about that. I am once again disappointed and dont anticipate returning due to management choosing cheap ingredients and a sloppy fast food approach to what should be authentic Mexican food. If I want fast food thats Mexican, Ill go to Alfredos. At least then I know the meal is edible.

Excited to go see the reopened El fenix, the past owner Olivia was so warm and greeting and remembering her regular customers, me, and my family of 3 decided to check it out on a Saturday night at 5:30 pm but we unfortunately were first told it would be a 10 min wait which ok cool, but as I kinda looked around to see the updated features of the reopened old classic favorite of Abilene Texas and saw many empty tables and many employees just standing around so I asked what looked to be the manager or possibly the new owner hey happen to know how much longer the wait for our small table of 3 and he began to tell us it would be 20 mins, due to the time it takes to get cleaned up to accommodate us but yet let me remind yall of over 15 empty 4 top tables unfortunately cant rate the food but honestly it wasnt worth the wait or the unorganized Chaos of a business that once was the in the prime when it was with the original owner. Wish them the best but not a very pleasant first impression.

Beans & rice were bland...need some kind of seasoning. Enchiladas were small & the corn tortillas were really greasy/oily & not enough filling & a little bland also. Chips were so-so, salsa was okay. Deeply saddened by our experience! As fans of El Fenix in the past we stopped in with our group and waited for over an hour, just to be seated at 3 separate tables. 1. My jack and coke was horribly, watered down with generic tasting alcohol. I didn t think it was possible to mess up Jack and Coke! But guess I was wrong. 2. Our chips were flavorless, and beans cold and hard. 3. My cheese enchiladas were absolutely horrible and tasted like straight up red tomato paste out of the can with no flavor, no spices. I got a reorder and they tasted even worse. 4. They had one server for 22 people! We did tip good as it wasn t her fault, but had to struggle to get refills or order corrections. Out of 22 guests not one was a fan of the food. Not many options as the usual Mexican restaurants. The queso was good and their decor was cute. Overall atmosphere was ok. Not a lot of seating and some tables are super to low for seating enjoyment.

This review is for my second time visiting El Fenix. The first time was a bad experience, but I decided to try it again and write a review. After 31 minutes, we received our food. We shared a plate of chicken fajitas. These fajitas do not seem like chicken breasts but thighs. I might be wrong; please judge by the pictures and let me know. It is my understanding that fajitas are made from chicken breast. The prices at this restaurant are high in contrast with the food quality. I wonder why the place closed the first time and if some of the same mistakes are occurring now. I liked two things from El Fenix: The green tomato salsa and the water without ice. I have attached the menu so you can see the prices.

The question, the beverages (alcohol and sweet tea), the chips my goodness the chips, and the dinner was nothing short of delicious. We will be going back! I hope in the spring and warmer weather we can utilize the burro alley courtyard and do live music and happy hour. So much potential here! Im so grateful this restaurant made a comeback!!! Parking: On S. 1st the parking is tight, but go behind and there is a great parking lot.

The beef queso was more like canned cheese heated with chili sauce in it. The chips were stale, the hot sauce had no flavor. We ordered chicken quesadillas and beef enchiladas. Current review as of Reopening in November of 2023 Our first attempt at going to El Fenix sadly was met with frustration. The restaurant had an extremely long wait and 15 minutes into the waiting the hostess on duty let everyone know they have completely ran out of Carne Guisada, All soda, chips, Taco meat and several other items. Most of the 20 or so people waiting all left. We did as well and retried a week later. In our initial second experience, we were able to get a table and get in before they started running out of the food. Our impression was Atmosphere and Service was fantastic. Our waitress was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The atmosphere and redesign really shined with new paint, decorations, and layout of the restraunt. The Queso was great. However, the guacamole felt like it was missing something(kinda bland). It was better before the reopening. We thought we would get chips and salsa at the table like before the reopening but we did not see it on the menu, no chips or salsa was brought. We also did not see any other tables with chips and salsa either. I am assuming they may have been out of it tonight. The Carne Guisada at El Fenix, I thought used to be the best. Not just in Abilene but every Mexican restaurant Ive tried in Texas. However, that was before the reopening. After the reopening it was very bland and lacking the flavor I remember. I also feel the portion size feels reduced compared to what it was. The cheese enchiladas we ordered sadly were also flavorless.. the red sauce had some flavor but the cheese used was still not melted on the inside of the enchiladas. The cheese just lacked that cheese flavor. Maybe due to it not being melted- we pressed onto the next item. Spanish Rice was very clumped up, mushy and flavorless. Felt like it came from a boil-in-bag type of rice box and was overcooked(can be seen in the photographs below) Sadly the refried beans were not much better. Very watery(see pictures). Both were also A LOT better before reopening. Honestly, between the price and quality of the food. We did not feel it was worth it. However, do keep in mind this is within <2 weeks of opening. I believe the cooks and management still have a few kinks to work out. Knowing this, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and will retry the food and update my review in a year to give them time to get in the groove again. --in my opinion, the best Mexican food available in all of Abilene. Trust me! Ive tried them all. (Prior to reopening / pre-2023)

I ve been eating at EL Fenix since they were located in the little house on Treadway. My wife and I were so happy to see a new owner giving me life to the restaurant. We went Monday night and the food was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Some of The chips were burnt while others were undercooked and gooey. The queso was burnt so bad you could smell it before the waitress set it on the table. I ordered chicken enchiladas. Everything on the plate was burnt. The rice had black pieces on it and was crunchy. The enchiladas had a burnt crusty coating and the refried beans were so burnt I actually had to use a knife to cut the crust off the top of them.

An old style Tex-Mex place that reminds you of the good old days. The food is tasty, the service considerate and the prices fair. The carne guisada is my favorite.

El Fenix is a cute little place with delicious tex-mex. I always get their queso - you can order with taco meat or pico de gallo mixed in. I alternate between carne guisada and enchiladas. The service has always been awesome and quick.

This place has been a favorite of our family for a couple of generations. Great Tex-Mex food, friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. They are located in the historic Burro Alley. Everyone should give this place a visit.

The parking lot was practically filled, so we anticipated a wait for a table. Surprisingly, we were promptly seated. Drinks and chips followed almost as promptly. The salsa had a bit too much cilantro for my taste. The tomatillo was excellent. Chips were robust (thicker than average) but crispy.I had the enchilada dinner & my son ordered the taco plate. Both were good, but nothing special, as were the refried beans and rice. The dessert sounded delicious -- sopapillas with ice cream & chocolate syrup -- but we didnt want to feel over-stuffed. Maybe next time.Service was average.

Service was good but food was subpar. We ordered the tacos and the quesadilla. They were both soggy on arrival and pretty disappointing. There are better Mexican places here to in Abilene.

Salsa is watered down Picante/tomato paste, 3 of the 5 orders came out wrong, portions are all for children. No silverware given throughout entire meal, had to get our own. Not a good experience in any way.
