My family and I went to the Black Bear Diner in Waco, TX. Our server was Summer, she was the best! I have a young son who loved all the black bear items she was incredibly nice to him and my family always going the extra mile for us. We appreciate Summer so much that we will absolutely be back to the Black Bear Dinner. Also our food was amazing!!

We had an amazing breakfast here. Visiting Waco for the first time and the Black Bear Diner at home is always packed, but we didnt have to wait at all here. Food was fast and correct, and Summer, our waitress, kept our coffee full and got us everything we needed without us even asking (extra napkins, waters, and lots more coffee ). She answered all my pesky menu questions with a smile. Made our day. 10/10 breakfast.

Let me start off by saying the waitress we had was great, wish I had got her name. BUT the food took forever and had a bunch of issues with it and also it wasn t very good at all. Then when we were leaving I m guessing a manager because she was wearing purple, she asked me how everything was and I responded it was ok . And she asked what was wrong and I kinda brushed it off to not start anything but then she was just staring at me and could really care less. And lastly, my sister tried to buy a snow globe for my daughter and she was rudely told no and then she asked why and they wouldn t give her an answer. Real weird vibe. Definitely won t be returning. Had potential but besides waitress, total fail.

My family and I went out to eat last night for dinner, 9/22/24. Our waitress Kendra was very polite and helpful. There were 7 of us, 5 adults, two kids. She took the orders quick and got our drinks out to us in a timely fashion. We all got our food after a while, there was a bit of a wait but whatever, it happens. My sister ordered the alfredo and immediately spit it out onto the plate after one bite, we all tried it and it tasted like the cream they used was spoiled. She asked for chicken fried steak in return and it was done right away. My brother ordered a simple fish and chips meal and didn t get his food with the rest of us, in fact, didn t get it at all until after my sister received her second order. We asked for a manager to come talk to us, because we had two fiascos with food and were a little displeased. She came over and said something like I heard we had an issue with the food. At this point we still hadn t received the fish and chips. We told her that we were a little upset that we had to remind them that we were missing an entire meal, and wanted to know why that was. She immediately threw the waitress, Kendra under the bus and said oh she forget to ring it up, that s her fault. Then said something along the lines of well what do you want me to do? Then walked away before we could answer. She then took the fish and chips plate out of the waitress s hands and make it a point to walk it over to our table. We told the waitress what she said and it visibly upset her because she has apparently been having issues with the manager on more than one occasion. The manager was rude, dismissive, and disrespectful to her staff and snarky with us, and we spent over $100 that night on dinner. The manager disrespected another waitress there while we were leaving and you could just tell the staff was walking on eggshells around her. My brother got sick later that night after eating only the fish and chips and puked everything up. So, I assume the fish was bad too. I have 15 years restaurant experience myself and was just disappointed in how everything was handled. I ve done everything from bussing tables, to cooking, to management, and the entire restaurant just seemed like they were scared to do anything around the manager. That type of disrespect and treatment shouldn t be allowed anywhere. Not to mention, the quality issues with the food. I hope the employees find something better. They ll never get another dime out of me.

Went there to try it out. First I was seated near the restroom that smelt like chemicals that was very strong and disturbing and distracting. Then the coffee was horrible. I got the cinnamon French toast and wasn t aware they add vanilla icing on it which I personally don t like and ruins the taste with syrup. So when it was time to pay and leave I informed them about that horrible smell and they said they noticed it also, but didn t move me.

To start they entered our information incorrectly on the wait list and we had to come in and resubmit our spot, then when ordering drinks the waitress forgot to bring my sons lemonade. After the 3rd reminder we were told they were out of lemonade. The wait for the food took over 45mins all while watching other patrons either complain to the manager or flat out leave our food did eventually arrive with no silverware for 6mins after food was delivered. We will not be coming back this meal was between 1 and 2:30

Ive had my eye on Black Bear Diner for a minute. My daughter and I decided to check it out and get takeaway. My daughter ordered the tri-tip and chicken strip meal with mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese. I ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and italian green beans with bacon. I also ordered a side salad, and dessert. I placed our order online and was given an estimated time of 20 mins. Most of our order was ready when we arrived. They were out of mac and cheese and instead of calling and asking what wed like to sub with, they waited until we got there. We subbed with garlic toast and somehow that took an additional 20-30 mins to prepare. We still had REALLY high hopes for the food. In fact, while I was waiting for toast, I saw a friend who gave Black Bear a rave review. The tri-tip was super chewy. The chicken fried steak was obviously frozen, not homemade. Everything needed a little salt and pepper. The side of cornbread was put in with the wet salad. All the food had a very zapped-in-the-microwave feel. Nothing special at all. We were incredibly sad.

I really wanted to love this place, we ve waited awhile before trying it out and it seemed that a Sunday evening was a fine time to enjoy us some Black Bear Diner. The atmosphere was nice, woodsy with a nice bear theme just right for Waco. The menu was robust with multiple delicious sounding options! So far, so good. They didn t seem too busy and the service was noticeably slow. We were greeted with smiles but our waitress did not live up to the hospitality claimed on the restaurant menu. It took a long time to get our food. We could see it sitting in the window for a full five minutes wondering where our waitress disappeared to in the back. When it was at last brought to our table, it was not hot and yummy as it might have been. My meatloaf and mashed potatoes were,at best, luke-warm. Good flavored food but not like we hoped. Everyone in our party agreed it was just mediocre. We may try again for the breakfast options but color me first, unimpressed.

Great Name BUT!??... Well, I said I would give this diner a second chance, and I did, with a party of 10, including me, none of whom have any knowledge of the review below. Only one out of 10 said the food was good, and he practically poured salt and pepper on his salmon. However, there are improvements in the waitstaff. But, my review remains as follows: This is a newly opened diner. It is very small. When our food arrived, it was very well presented. However, as good as it looked, was as good as it got. None of our food was hot, not even close to warm, and a very odd thing everybody at our table noticed was, there was No Smell of food or food cooking in the whole restaurant, there wasnt even a smell of food coming from our plates....what to make of this, its puzzling. Something that annoyed me while I was trying to eat my bland cool supposed to be hot food was a worker facing the kitchen kept doing this horrible clown like circus announcement toward the kitchen. It was very annoying and sounded ridiculous. I have given this diner a fair chance, and I am not impressed. Signed, Unimpressed

**Black Bear Diner Mixed Experience** We visited Black Bear Diner this morning, arriving at 8:15 a.m. and requested a table for two. Despite several empty tables at least nine that we could see we were informed there would be a 5-10 minute wait. After about 10 minutes, we were seated. Once seated, we waited another 10 minutes before tge hostess approached to take our drink order. the hostess explained the server was backed up. Our server eventually arrived after another 10-minute delay. Up to this point, the service was less than ideal, and we were not impressed. However, things took a positive turn once the food was served. Our server became much more attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. The food itself was quite good, with large portions that were difficult to finish a rarity for me. In summary, while the experience started off poorly with long waits and slow service, the diner did redeem itself with good food and improved service as the meal progressed.

Hostess and wait staff were wonderful. Place was cozy. But the food was just bad. I ordered the avocado toast. It was two pieces of toasted bread with half an avocado cut out and placed on top. With slits. It was hard. Usually this is mashed with a seasoning on top. It was awful. I also ordered it with two over medium eggs that came out extremely over easy. White all mixed in the yellow. Barely touched it. The hashbrowns were shavings but thick and not crispy and just bland. No flavor. We got the chocolate milk which tastes like water and chocolate sauce. I gave it a 3 because the staff rocked. Food was horrible. I m not sure if we will be back but if I am, i MIGHT give it another go. Otherwise place looks great. Was really excited just bad food and maybe just a bad day for the cooks. Kid-friendliness: There were kids.

8/7/24 breakfast We shouldve known better since this was our 3rd attempt, but hoped things were better. Its actually WORSE!! I dont make reviews but after today I had to. After close to 30 min wait, our drink order was taken. After our order was given it took close to 45 min and 3 different plates served to us, the server didnt know the tables and took this food to the correct tables. I personally wouldnt eat food placed in front of a stranger much less serve it. The crazy part of this is another server had these hot plates in her hands and yelled at us for not telling her this order was not ours because it was burning her hands!?? We had to remind our server of the sides we ordered too. During this enitew time I noticed a family with 2 preteen boys who had been patiently waiting for their food. Everyone around them were served and more seated while this family was ignored!! They politely brought it to the managers attention and left without eating. When we checked out Angel asked how everything was, my husband told her the food was mediocre but the service was horrible. She looked at the ticket and actually said, oh you had Chris...and they cant get good servers anymore and its causing the good ones to leave. Now on the way home we discovered we were over charged by 12.00 for drinks we didnt have. Thats on us but...we were in a hurry to get out of the restaurant mess. We will not be back and when we go to breakfast in the future we will go to the new Whataburger that just opened next door. If youre reading this...dont try this place unless you want chaos and excuses !!

What an unfortunate experience we had today. My second visit, boyfriend s first and we definitely won t be back again any time soon. It took 30 minutes (at least) to get 2 pancakes and a chicken strip meal. We got refills once. But at least we got a show while we waited! A waiter kept leaving a stack of dishes in the window without cleaning the food off. The dishwasher got super mad and came out from the back and let everyone know haha. Can t really blame them though because it did seem to be the waiters jobs to clean the dishes off. I had plenty of time to observe since we weren t eating. We finally found out they d made my strips wrong when our waitress gave us our only refill. One of the biggest issues was - the pancakes came up when they were supposed to and proceeded to set there for 10-15 while my lunch was remade. They didn t remake them or warm them up. The waitress also NEVER came back while we ate to refill drinks or see how everything was. So we couldn t ever ask for more syrup for the dry cold pancakes. We didn t see her again til she did a run by with the receipt. It s not her fault the order took an eternity. But she could tell we were a bit frustrated and instead of trying to smooth over the situation, she just avoided us like the plague and never came back. I guess I could have mentioned something when we paid, but we stopped by on our way to the movies and were made late by the 30 min wait for our food. Y all gotta do some more customer service training or something. On front and back of house. We shouldn t have known there was conflict with employees and we sure as heck should have received better customer service once everything got messed up instead of what we did get. Do better.

Hard PASS! The wait was forever and the hostess didn t seem to know what she was doing. If someone walked up to complain she just immediately sat them not checking their place in line. When we were finally. Sat at 12:05 our food didn t arrive until 12:55. My order was completely wrong as they gave me the regular Benedict when I had ordered the california one. So the server (who was actually good and on top of things, this seemed like a total kitchen fiasco) said she had them remake it and put it on rush. My husbands burger didn t come with half the ingredients it said it did. And my daughter s Mac n cheese was literally a cup, like a measured cup of it. So she left still hungry. And so did I, because everyone had finished eating and my food was still not ready. So we cancelled it and vocally said to the server that we will not be back. A manager never came and apologized. In fact there seemed to be no presence of a manager anywhere and our poor server was having to apologize for long wait times to several tables. Don t waste your time Waco!

She had tables at the other side of the restaurant and then our table. Her time was monopolized by her other tables so we didnt see her as much as we should have. Now the food was really disappointing. Both got ham and both were burnt. Scrambled eggs were over cooked with brown areas. My wifes pancakes werent done. There was so much wrong that I just stopped complaining about it and just ate it because I was hungry. I may give them another try but too my wife Black Bear is not on the list anymore.

So I ended up eating the sides of the other plates. The broccoli and cheese soup was terrible. However the chocolate creme pie was delicious. This is our second time eating here. Our total bill was $73 for three plates, an hour wait and two of the meals we couldn t finish because the prime rib was terrible. My opinion overall, if you re looking for great service and deserts this is your place. Meals, they have large portions but after our second trip the food just wasn t worth it.

Started off by sitting us down and getting us drinks and forgetting about us for like 15 min, luckily I started gossiping to my gf about it and got help right away, one of the managers I m guessing the gm paid for our meal for the inconvenience, since she sat us down and got the drinks, so after all that happened our waiter (didn t get name) was able to prioritize our order, and get it to us, food was great.

We have been to this location several times. The first time was great, especially since they had just opened and everyone was still learning. For us, it has gone downhill ever since. We were there on a Sunday at 2pm, table of 4, and were sat quickly. The table we went to was not cleaned correctly, as in, still a dirty bowl and syrup stuck to the table. Hostess cleaned promptly. Our waiter may have been new (benefit of the doubt). When we asked for silverware, he brought us plastic to-go silverware and stated the regular silverware hadnt been wrapped yet. (When I asked later, he did bring us regular silverware). Refills were hard to get while we waited for food and after it arrived. When food arrived, mine was incorrect and another at the table had potatoes that werent cooked thoroughly. Once extra napkins were brought, we never saw the waiter again. A different server brought us our ticket. While eating, the restaurant cleared out leaving few tables. Thats when it got louder. I thought it was a party, but it turned out to be servers having some time for a break. Another server told a table near us she would come to see them as soon as she was done sweeping her floors. (Maybe she wasnt their server). Two others sat 2 tables away from us and had a very interesting conversation. As someone who has been in the restaurant industry, I understand different aspects, and will even try to give a break to many. But, this time, I think I will be taking a break from Black Bear.

My husband wanted to try this place, so i went along with him. The food was so bad, that I just pushed the plate aside and didnt eat. The eggs were severly over cooked and dried out, the ham was so dry we couldnt even cut it, my husbands plate had sausage as well as ham. The sausage was burnt, not a little burned, but burnt along with his hash browns. We both had pancakes and the first pancakes were way under cooked, to the point of seeing the batter. The waitress got us more pancakes, but they were pretty much the same. Im not sure what was going on in the kitchen today, but it resulted in very poor food being served. When we paid, the girl ask us how we enjoyed it, i was brutally honest and told her we didnt and would not be back. We paid over 40 dollars for food that we didnt even eat. We left and went found another place to eat. I hate to give bad reviews, but today this place was just that bad.

Came in for breakfast with a few friends and immediately thought the newspaper menus were cute but considering how large the menu is it was hard to read i would recommend less items to choose from or change the menu format. We ordered eggs Benedict, chicken fried steak, a pancake, and the sourdough parmesan burger everything tasted like it was frozen and all the sides were cold. Our server was very much a diner server which was fine but she seemed over stretched with a 6 table section she would forget a few items and then frustrated when she would have to come back. but really the service isn t the reason i wouldn t come back it s the food. I m not sure if this is a chain or family owned but either way it s just disgusting if you re wanting breakfast food with a large readable menu please check out Cafe cap downtown. Waco has so many good LOCAL breakfast options. and this new chain restaurant just isn t one of them!

Not sure why the food took so long as there were only 3 tables filled and with 6 of the staff just standing around laughing. I have never seen a restaurant with more staff than patrons. The food was ok but not excellent. Hopefully they can correct the issues with this place.

Today was my first time trying Black bear diner. I was not impressed. When I got there I quickly noticed that it was pretty dead and the floor and tables were a mess. Which automatically gave a red flag. I ignored it and ordered the Bigfoot chicken fried steak. That was a big mistake! The corn on the cob lacked flavor. The chicken fried steak looked like it came out a hungry man box and tasted as so. Definitely one of the worst place s I have eaten in a long time. The best thing about the meal was the side salad and the cornbread muffin. The food was so bad I didn t eat half of it. I was highly disappointed and wouldn t recommend it to anyone. On the plus side the waitress was great and very attentive.

Food was warm, delicious, and super filling! You get a LOT of food. I ordered the cinnamon roll French toast, which was pretty filling on its own, even without sides, and I ordered a side of biscuits and gravy-to my chagrin, I couldnt finish them! The biscuits were MASSIVE! 2 biscuits took up the same space on the plate as my husbands full-course breakfast! They were soft and fluffy, warm, and sufficiently smothered in gravy. Well seasoned, too! And less than $6! My husband got The Grizz, which came with 3 meats (super thick-cut and well-smoked bacon and ham, and some sausage links!) Hasbrowns, 2 eggs, and 2 fluffy pancakes the size of his head! They were massive! And they were definitely sweet cakes, as they barely needed any Maple syrup! We had ordered a stuffed French Toast to share, but barely got to it, we were so full! It was a black berry-filled bearclaw dipped and fried like French Toast! Super good when we finally had room to try it. The service was quick, friendly, and they were ahead of our needs! Plates were gone before we could wave over our server, and the drinks were refilled almost before we were finished! Speaking of drinks, their orange juice is absolutely the best! Fresh pressed from the juicer in their kitchen! Still room temp and delicious! And their huckleberry Lemonade was delicious as well! Our server even got me one to go as well as her favorite drink, sweet tea with the huckleberry syrup! Props to the team! It was fairly busy and they still got everything out quick and were very attentive!

Greeted right away and taken to a table! Smiles all around. Table server was nice, all smiles, accomadating, checked on us frequently. Table was two small tables pushed together. Obvious food and crumbs where tablea met and spilt sugar on table by condiments. NOT the cleanest table. The table closest to the wall was unlevel and rocked a good amount. Condiments full. Food. Biscuits from both plates were hard and very dry. Almost like they were from the day before, or sitting under a light way too long. Not light and fluffy like our first visit when it first opened. Biscuits appeared smaller, as well. A lot of jelly required. The country potatoes tasted as they, as well, had been sitting under a light too long. The omelet was overcooked, making it dry and unappealing. Sadly, a lot of dry food on the plates. Asked for salsa to try to moisten it up. Overall, not very appetizing. This is our third try at breakfast. First time (at opening), it was great. Second time, ehhh, and third we left with the statement among us definitely not a go to for breakfast. And, we are sad about that. But, there are too many other options and places we enjoy to return where we didnt enjoy the food.

I enjoyed my experience, well enough. But the service and food wasn t any better or worse than other diners. Although, it was a bit more expensive. I ordered my eggs over medium, and they came out over easy. And they were very slimy/greasy. I ordered strawberries on top of my waffle, for an extra $3 charge, and I got one maybe 1 1/2 thinly sliced strawberry on top. The waffle was good and the atmosphere was cozy. Overall, I would say it s average at best. After reading the newsletter/menu, talking about how their brand and food is exceptional, and superior to others, I wouldn t say it met the hype.

The price is right for the amount of tasty food, and our waitress, Margaret did a great job keeping a close eye on our bottomless beverages, and warned about the cost of ordering the one that wasnt. Only complaint was that they underestimated how popular it would be, as the wait on a weekend morning was almost an hour, the parking lot was almost dangerously small for the number of people stalking parking spots while dodging pedestrians, and the lack of seating inside out of the heat and sun is not desirable.

The waitress tried to rush us out of there by bringing our ticket while we were still eating and never asked if we needed/wanted anything else and we were contemplating getting dessert. My biggest complaint was the smell of this place, its disgusting. I dont know if its standing water or mold somewhere but it was incredibly unappetizing while trying to eat. A good friend of mine and I decided to go here based on his previous experience at night. We arrived around 3:00 p.m. and waited 12 minutes to be greeted. There were five other parties already waiting. We were told it would be 25 to 30 minutes before we would receive a table. Ive been a waiter in this town for 32 years and I know what winding down a shift is and what it entails. Its not very difficult to ask a server to stay a little longer to get customers served and make them happy. When waiters receive $2.13 an hour, the labor cost of putting on an extra server is truly inconsequential. This is not a good impression on new customers for a brand new business. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth and my friend and I simply decided to leave rather than wait and hear more excuses.

Waited 20 minutes to be seated which is understandable being 9am on a holiday. Looked over the menu and decided on what we were going to ordered only to find out they are out of biscuits and it would be 30 minutes before they have any ready. I am at a loss for words on how a place know for their biscuits would run out at 9:30am in the morning and oh why it would be 30 minutes before more were available. This is the main reason we came for breakfast. Food came and I only had two eggs even though the meal said it comes with three and I still didn t have my biscuits. Finally brought me one biscuit when the meal calls for two. I asked for a cup of gravy and was changed $1.40 for it. After all we went through to get our meal I was still charged for a cup of gravy. The worse part of the whole ordeal was that the waitress was absent for most of the visit and never let us finish talking before she started walking off. We were very sad because we had heard great things from others before we visited. Not sure if we will ever go again.

Usually Im all about giving a restaurant a second chance, but not this one. We had chicken fried steak, they were out of ALL sides so we had to get broccoli served with it and the CFS tasted like any CFS and gravy that you can buy on the a frozen aisle and heat up in the microwave. The check was $72 and not worth a penny of it. We took it home and threw it out for coyotes. Also, have you ever been to the old Grandy s . Yeah, that s the atmosphere. Kinda depressing.

GREAT little place! Really enjoyed the cinnamon roll French toast and the hashbrowns!!! My mom got eggs and they were overcooked a tad bit for medium but that s okay! Helen was an awesome and sweet lady (server) love the bear themed decor.
