Marina was such an amazing hostess! Do not come here if you are expecting authentic asian food! there are better places to get that. this is more like a high-end deconstruction of asian food reconstructed with a very texan touch. Pictured is the spam musubi, which is not what i expected, and the brisket egg rolls, which is served with a yogurt that reminds me of tatziki.

Apparently the chef here knows Asian food. Usually I can be quite judgmental against Asian Fusion food but this place is above my bar. I visited it twice a day. The plating and rice quality of Musubi rolls could be improved though.

Style > Substance. Love the vibes here. Located on the River Walk with an underground tiki bar. Unfortunately, the food did not match the ambiance. Service was fine at best. They were friendly, but took their time between dishes and refilling drinks. Nothing bad, but also nothing to write home about. The color scheme is all warm colors, from the neon pink sign outside to the yellowed lighting inside. Looks like a full bar, but not necessary when the tiki vibing The Hugmans Bar downstairs. Owned by the same peoples, but separate. Family style dining, maybe tapas, depending on your perspective. We ordered the Brisket Egg Roll (literally only one, could barely taste the brisket) & Musubi (fine, but difficult to screw up canned meat with rice wrapped with seaweed) for the appetizers. Main courses were the Dashi Waffle (bonito flakes are always fun, came with pork belly and shrimp; the waffle was pretty dry and a little tough, not as fluffy in the batter department) & Grilled Salmon (second best dish; crispy and tender with great flavor) & The Tokyo Cowboy Double Cheeseburger (was told that the meat was tasty, but unfortunately any sides like fries must be ordered separately). The sides were, interestingly, both better and larger than the entrees. Their spin on Macaroni & Cheese was the best dish tonight, course designation be damned! They used rice cakes, a popular Chinese and Korean alternative to noodles or rice, with a delicious blend of Mexican cheeses in sauce form, topped with bacon and kimchi. Great mix of savory flavors. Also had the green beans. (Like the other side we tried, excellent. Rounds out the top three things here). Desert was a shared Tres Leches cake. A suitable conclusion to the night, as it represented our dinner- good, but not great; fine and forgettable. This place has potential. Upgrading the menu to better reflect the ambiance and prices would be a must. Still a decent place to check out- maybe stick to triple rounds of the sides though!

The burger was amazing! I like to say that I m a burger connoisseur so I know burgers. The best in town. Our server, Summer, was amazing. Very nice and knowledgeable. She went out of her way to please us. She even brought out Chef Warren to offer us his homemade tres leches. I don t like tres leches but he sold it because I love coconut. His coconut version was delicious. DELICIOUS! He should sell that in stores. I ll be coming back for sure thanks to Summer and Chef Warren. Oh! Summer convinced us to try their signature TC Grasshopper. It was small but it packed flavor. Reminded me of those little Andes Mint Chocolate bars. 5 stars all the way around.

The lack of AC ruined the dining experience. While it happens, giving people a heads-up and letting patrons choose if they want to dine in the Texas heat without AC is always a better option. One night in San Antonio, don t risk it I recently visited Tokyo Cowboy, intrigued by the unique concept of blending Texas favorites with the delicacy and tenderness of Asian cuisine. The dumplings and sake were exciting, and I loved how the flavors showcased the duality between these two culinary traditions. It s an inventive idea, and on paper, it seemed like the perfect place for a night out. Unfortunately, my experience fell short, primarily due to the steak, which was a major letdown. Given the concept, I expected something closer to a melt-in-your-mouth experience, but the steak missed the mark entirely. Despite the great service, the dish lacked the tenderness and quality I had hoped for. If you re spending a night in town, I wouldn t recommend this spot based on my experience. While I m sure there are reviews that rave about the food, my visit didn t live up to the hype. The concept has potential, but execution is everything and this just wasn t also the atmosphere wasn t either Tokyo nor cowboy ish

I was here at the end of August. The service was great and the food was amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection and the karaage chicken was nice and crispy with a sweet tangy taste. It was great. My only complaint would be that their air conditioner was not working right. It was hot! Our reservations were for 9pm and it was was still hot. I had to pick up my hair into a ponytail and use the menu as a fan. The Texas heat is no joke. According to an employee the AC had been out for the last 2-3 months! Thats the only reason why I wont give all 5 stars. With the price of the food and the busy location you think that getting that fixed would be a priority. I was only there for a little over an hour and I feel for the employees having to work in that heat. I would definitely return for a late visit because my server was so great and attentive and everything was delicious but I cant imagine going any earlier to sit in my sweat.

Food was ok. The name is kind of misleading. There is nothing much cowboy or Tokyo about it. We had Salmon with Thai green curry sauce which should comes with rice but that is extra, cabbage salad with fish sauce dressing, Chinese style chicken dumplings which had no taste, and some shrimp with bacon waffles which was dry. Their entree portions are mostly small, more like appetizers. The place was nice but mostly for outdoor dining which was very hot in Summer. Service was quick.

Dragged my husband here against his will (I love Asian fusion cuisine), and ordered the Brisket egg roll, karaage chicken, and husband got the burger because hes not exactly food adventurous. That burger, in one bite, sent my husband into an identity crisis, and has gone mute. Kid-friendliness: We came in with a stroller, and they were fully reserved, expecting to turn us away since we wanted to sit indoors. Instead they quickly accommodate us in a comfortable setting.

We had a reservation and once seated took about 10min to be seen by our waiter. Brought us water then about another 10mins till we were able to order some drinks. Barely saw the guy, he said it was busy but he was not on the actual floor to much. Maybe he had to help in the back idk. Very pleasant guy though and very nice, but just not around at all. Had fries with my burger that I did not receive till half way done with my burger. Would of love to give 5 stars, hopefully was just a one off and next time we go I can leave 5 stars

Asian fusion isn t a new a or novel concept at this point to most people. While Tokyo Cowboy may get a pass here in San Antonio (especially on the river walk with tourists) as something new and novel, it s simply an attempted retread of flavor combinations many of us have experienced over the last 20 years elsewhere. It s a well placed tourist trap but is not deserving of its 4.5 stars- a score that feels more based on a case of the Emperor s New Clothes than actual merit. The small restaurant is welcoming although sparsely stylized with minimal decor. The charm of the older building comes through with heavy paint on metal structural supports and old window frames. The open kitchen is completely lost behind a large wall that splits the restaurant in two and limits seating. As if someone thought an open kitchen would be a great feature then got cold feet at the last second. The wait staff was largely by committee but they were attentive and friendly. We were informed that: 1. Food was family style. 2. Plates came out as they were ready. While this is perfectly acceptable at a Tapas restaurant, it is less so desirable at a place like this where there are clearly entrees and appetizers. One would expect the chef to pick and choose the items you ordered to flow into the next .but no. Rather than go into each dish separately: All I will say is that the chef seemed to have absolutely 0 respect for new southern food. The only fusion really taking place here is the use of a fryer (which is not that uncommon in street food in Asia so the term fusion is very loose here). Yes- I did try the abomination of heavy on heavy that was the corn waffle and a brisket egg roll (with a dill ranch sauce) ultimately it feels like the chef understands southern food about as well as a 16 year old boy understands sex- based on what they ve seen in movies and on the internet followed by ruining someone s night as they proudly pound away in an uneven and clumsy way. The food lacks balance and brightness. Flavors are muddled and lack spice, boldness, or creativity. Any brightness or interesting note is almost immediately destroyed by more fried food or mayonnaise-esque sauce. Even the kimchi salad (ordered mid-meal out of desperation to find some freshness or brightness) was over dressed and heavy. The under-pickled pickles were also no match for the brown fried foods that kept coming. I think the most telling moment came at the end. The chef chose to save the rice dumpling macaroni and cheese as the last course. No forethought into the flow of the meal or what the individual had ordered. Just shoving food out at their own pace. More importantly this dish sums up the chef s understanding of these very complex food styles- A very basic, but decently made, American cheese sauce (must be southern because it s bland and heavy) covering rice dumplings (rice dumplings are from Asia!) with some pork belly on top (it s elevated so I can charge more for it). The wait staff is well trained. The chef and kitchen has skill to execute. What they re executing just isn t very good.

I didn t think you could ruin musubi. Wrong! It was far from even a fusion of musubi: a blob of rice and a dollop of spicy sauce with a very tiny piece of spam. Even the pork belly dish looked more like tiny shards of bacon. The Mac and cheese could have been so good but it had zero flavor. I will make it at home with the rice cakes but adds seasoning. The salmon was tasty but overcooked and cold. The corn cakes could have been great but were ice cold and served with flakes of cold pork belly. The egg rolls were delicious and hot though and although the kimchi salad had zero kimchi it was a tasty fresh salad with a kimchi flavored dressing. We had reservations and still had to wait over 30 minutes. The AC was broken so inside was hot. We opted to sit outside and when we got there it was a cocktail size table. We waited 12 minutes before a waiter came. We ordered beverages and appetizers and she never asked for our main course orders. She came back 14 minutes later with drinks and another 5 minutes with the first appetizer. The food never came out at once. Some were 5 minutes and other much longer. It was not a pleasant experience, the food was cold, portions were smaller than sushi (don t boast Tokyo when nothing is Japanese and don t boast Texas when you are opposite of Texas size -miniature). everyone s food came out at different intervals. Sadly, the birthday boy got his food after everyone else already ate. I would not recommend or ever go back- even for free!

We went here for a gfs birthday last Saturday night, and I had made birthday reservations through OpenTable . I get there before my party and was greeted and quickly sat down by their host. Gayland took care of our table with drink and food orders. We did get a sense that he didn t know that this was a special occasion, so I asked if he knew if this was a birthday dinner and he said No, I had know idea to which I replied Well Gayland, this is Michelle, and it s her birthday . Our food came out and it was great! Most of us took advantage of the Restaurant Week special. I really enjoyed the NY Strip and Kimchi Salad. Our table had to ask for knives, and it wasn t a situation where they forgot, it was more so that we were supposed to ask for knives. Which we thought was strange. Yes the steak is pre-sliced, but my teeth aren t that strong to tear the bigger pieces apart lol. The dessert, Tres Leches, was not my personal favorite. It was surprisingly dry and the color through me way off. BUT with all that to say, I appreciate Gayland for stepping up and getting a signed HBD card and a dessert with a candle on it for our friend. It made the evening and mood feel way better. Overall we still liked TC. They just needed better communication from host to server. Especially with using a system like OpenTable where it asks if it s a special occasion when making reservations.

The wait between meeting our waitress, getting water, giving our drink orders and giving our food orders was about 5-10 mins. each time and there was only about 10 people there. I had the milk toast with the chicken and waffles, both did not impress. The roasted tomatoes were the best part of the meal. Maybe it just wasnt a good day for them, or I got there too early, I dont know but I hoped for better.

I hate to ding them - but the AC wasn t keeping up and we just couldn t stay very long due to how hot it was. It must be the landlords fault. Parking: Parked at frost tower nearby.

A overall bad experience here, middle of August and their A/C was not working. They had a temporary solution but didn t work that well. I understand unexpected problems come up and at least they were trying to do something about it. As we entered the restaurant, none of the staff acknowledge us as we stood there waiting. A minute or two later a man got up and walked over and seated us. We ordered 5 dishes, the first 3 came out in a reasonable time frame but were rather underwhelming. The waitress had informed us that the dishes were large and meant to be shared. The four of us shared a kimchi salad, spicy dumplings, and the pork belly. They were very small from a sharing perspective. The salad was a one person serving, everyone got exactly 1 dumpling and the $20 pork belly was about 10 thinly sliced pieces. At first I thought maybe I was ordering too much but after the first three dishes, I was very glad we still had 2 more coming. This is where it started getting really bad. It was 40 more minutes before the next dish came out. The restaurant was not that packed and we were confused as to why I was taking so long. The waitress came by on a number of occasions and asked how everything was going and I kept mentioning to her that we were still waiting on the two other dishes. We had reached the point of frustration and were just about ready to get up and leave when the waitress came by final time. I asked her what was going on and why it was taking so long to get these last two dishes out. She simply put she had no clue what was going on or why it was taking the kitchen so long to get these out. Not really offering any kind of solution, I asked her if she had a manager available to speak with. The man who sat us originally came by the table and instead of acknowledging the problem basically asked me what was going on. I asked him if he could please explain why everything was taking so long. At that time the fourth dish came out but still waiting for the karaage chicken. He explained that they had all new staff in the kitchen, and there were only two people working and they can only cook so much food at a time. Never once was there an apology for the poor service or an offer on how they would make it right. He said he would take the karaage off the bill and I told him I wasn t looking for anything for free. All in all, the food was average, especially for the prices. I don t write too many reviews, but the apathetic attitudes that everyone seemed to have about their poor service is really what frustrated me. Not once an acknowledgment or apology. If you re understaffed, it s your job to find a solution. If the kitchen can t keep up, don t seat as many customers. Don t make the customer feel like they re the problem because you re having problems you can t adequately deal with.

If you think you know San Antonio s dining scene, Tokyo Cowboy is here to prove you deliciously wrong. This Riverwalk gem by Chef Ben Cachila is like a culinary plot twist Texan heart meets Japanese soul, and your taste buds are the winners. First things first, the drink menu is no joke. My Old Fashioned was smoothl Heaven Door bourbon, a touch of sweetness, and just enough citrus to make you feel fancy. If you re not into booze, don t worry; their mocktails are equally legit. The SHREDDED VEGETABLE SALAD made me question everything I thought I knew about salads. Finely julienned cabbage and carrots, crispy shallots, peanuts, and herbs crunchy, fresh, and absolutely not your average rabbit food. The HOT CHICKEN CHILI DUMPLINGS? Let s just say, steamed perfection with a chili oil relish that has just enough heat to keep things interesting. But I m not gonna lie I came for the BRISKET EGG ROLL, and boy, did it deliver. Tender brisket, pickled collards, and queso asadero wrapped up in crispy heaven. Sign me up for a lifetime supply. And if you re into surf and turf, the GULF SHRIMP & NOODLES brings the sea to your plate with grilled Gulf shrimp, vermicelli noodles, and a char siu sauce that ll have you hooked. Don t skip dessert trust me. The TOKYO TRES LECHES changes frequently, but the Almond Joy version I had was like biting into a cloud made of coconut dreams and chocolate whispers. P.S.: While we were there, the AC was not 100%. If I had been wearing a sport coat, I would ve had to take it off, but the food was so good I didn t let the slightly less-than-ideal temperature affect a wonderful night. Tokyo Cowboy is the perfect spot to lasso your appetite and take it on a world tour, all without leaving the Riverwalk.

Loved Tokoyo Cowboy!! Marina our server was excellent and took great care of us!! Tried the crab roll and chicken dumpling appetizers. They were good - the dumplings fell apart a bit and lacked a bit of texture but the taste was good! The tres leches was also tasty though maybe a tad dense - I would order this again. Had the 36 Chambers cocktail and it was really good!! I m now a fan of whiskey cocktails. Everything on the drink menu looked interesting and flavorful - they are also beautifully presented! I would definitely go back and recommend the cocktails. I m looking forward to trying the juice box of sake next time!! Their entrees also looked good and I would try them also. Definitely recommend this spot. I also hope one day they add a small fan to their outdoor area as it s definitely a bit sweaty haha.

Im not sure what happened to this place, but since I first came during their soft opening to when I had dinner there last Saturday, the quality has dropped off tremendously. We went there excited to have the dishes that impressed us the first time we went and were so disappointed with the food that we left after the first round of appetizers. The crab handroll used to be good and balanced in terms of its ingredients, but this time, all 3 or the rolls we ordered were almost entirely rice with maybe 2-3 strands of fake crab in each roll. Thank god we had butter to salvage what little their was to work with, but if that was what I wanted I would have been better served going to Joes Crab Shack. We made it through one disappointing roll before dissecting the other two to make our discovery. The salads were ok at best this time around. The kimchi salad was especially disappointing and was completely soggy and the chicken dumplings were cold when we received them. The atmosphere was another disappointment. The restaurant is STILL a sweat lodge where patrons are forced to fan themselves with their menus if they want any sense of relief. Add to that the fact that the bar below the restaurant and its surrounding area stink like an outhouse. Weve never liked Hugmans Oasis and affectionately call it peepee bar. This place seems to be headed the same way. Additionally, the booth benches in the restaurant sit WAY too low. Im 61 and when I was seated on the bench side of the table the top of said table came all the way up to my chest and I had to sit hip to hip with my wife on the chair which was much more accommodating. All of that said, the service was excellent. Our waiter was very kind and did a good job attending to us throughout our brief visit. We will not be returning and have added this restaurant to the long list of restaurants to avoid on our SA food site.

Arrived today and noticed this restaurant on the drive to hotel. Super excited as it looked incredible. Reviews on Google showed high remarks, so we set a reservation for three. Host was super accommodating, sat us as soon as we arrived, but unfortunately, the AC was not working in the restaurant. However, the host recognize we were uncomfortable and moved us towards a rental AC unit in the back of restaurant. High remarks to the host and servers tonight. We are frequent customers to Japanese restaurants, so we were excited to try spam musubi, crab rolls, as well as the brisket egg roll and cheeseburger for my white girl. I m not sure why, maybe tonight was a fluke, but they used day old cold & crunchy rice that was straight from the refrigerator for the spam musubi and crab rolls. Trust me, I know day old crunchy rice, and it killed the taste of both rolls. Brisket egg roll was hot and crispy, but lacked flavor. The side of ranch was supportive to finish it because I paid a lot for a single egg roll and felt obligated to eat it. Cheeseburger was cooked flawlessly and made up for the other items. Highly recommend. Overall 3 stars is best for price, location w/no AC, and quality of food. For the price and location, we were overall disappointed. I hope manager reads this and reflects on it to ensure it doesn t repeat to others.

I recently dined at Tokyo Cowboy and had the pleasure of trying several dishes. The Shedder Vegetable Salad was a delightful start to the meal. The fresh, crunchy vegetables were perfectly paired with a tangy dressing that brought out the best flavors in each bite. It was light yet satisfying, making it a great opener. The Crispy Karaage Chicken was an absolute standout. The chicken was juicy on the inside and wonderfully crispy on the outside, seasoned just right with a flavorful punch. Its easily one of the best karaage Ive had in a long time, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting. The Furikake Fries were another highlight. The fries were crisp and golden, topped with just the right amount of furikake seasoning that added a savory, umami-rich flavor. They were addictive and made for a perfect side dish. The Japanese beer with low alcohol content was a nice touch to the meal. It was light, refreshing, and complemented the flavors of the food without overpowering them. It was the perfect beverage to pair with the dishes, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Finally, the Pecan Pie was a sweet way to end the meal. The filling was rich and full of nutty flavor, but the crust was a bit too soft for my taste. While I prefer a firmer, flakier crust, the pie was still very enjoyable. One thing to note is that the portions are quite generous. Two people can easily share these dishes and leave feeling satisfied. Its a great value for the quality and quantity of food you get. Everything I tried was absolutely delicious, and I would definitely return for another meal.

Two of us ordered the steak and eggs, medium rare, and we were the last of a party of 4 to be served, and it was cold. It was tasty but cold, and it should have been piping hot considering how long we waited for it. The eggs were burnt and extra crispy, worse than bacon. (I know some people may like that, i dont.) Tokyo Cowboy is definitely overpriced. It is a cute place, but there has to be some major changes and improvements before I ever consider going back.

Marina was a great help and navigated me thru the menu for some delicious options. They have quite the interesting twist on karaage.

I really enjoyed my experience at Tokyo Cowboy. Our drinks and food were very tasty, and our waitress Marina was AMAZING. She was so sweet and welcoming, and she gave us great drink recommendations. Ask for Marina when you come here- you won t regret it! :)

My fiancée and I came here for date night and we had a fantastic time. 10/10 experience. The food was phenomenal, the atmosphere was beautiful (we sat outside by the river), and the service was perfect! MARINA was an amazing server, she was so helpful and made our dinning experience complete. We will definitely be back next time we are on the river! And we will be sure to ask for MARINA!!!

Marina was the sweetest and most attentive server for our friend s bday dinner. Food and service 100! Atmosphere only 4 stars due to no ac in late July but we all had a great meal.

Food, service, atmosphere were all great. AC was out, but they turned on the fan next to us and that really helped. Marina rules!
