Such a cool historic building with so many different seating areas and river views to enjoy while you eat. We stopped for lunch and were seated right away. Staff was super friendly and service was quick. So picturesque! I had the chicken salad sandwich which was SO yummy; highly recommend!

Its dirty, there are a lot of flies outside that get stuck in the food, there are several times we order things from the menu and each time they forget to complete the order and they dont remove it from the ticket and they charge for it... they are bloody and Pajamas, all the staff feel that they are the best but that attitude makes them arrogant, rude, believing as if they dont like to work, they are there out of necessity and in a bad face, the worst of all..... is that you can see how bitter they are.. What a sad thing about the service and poor thing about the owner. May your business look bad because of other people!!! You have to select the staff better or pay them well so that they are happy and friendly or look for people who do want to work and have a good attitude in the service area...

This was such a fun place to go! We sat outside, it was warm but theres alot of shade and there are misting fans. The wait staff was friendly and capable (as well as kind to the children). The portions were surprisingly large. The onion rings were a meal unto themselves! Great flavors, great atmosphere, great food! Being set in the adorable backdrop of Gruene makes the whole trip an event and not just a meal.

I have been eating at Gristmill for years. I like the historical significance and the cute town. Whenever people come visit, I like to bring them here and take them outside of city to see something different and Texan. People appreciate it. The only problem is the HEAT! Be prepared if you go when it s hot. Restaurant seating can be outside. There are fans but you still melt. Inside seating is still very hot. I would get on waitlist to avoid waiting in heat as well. My nephew once started spraying water on himself to cool down. The staff is very friendly and they re always filling you up with cold drinks and this helps with the heat. You must order giant Texan sized onion rings. They are one of the best onion rings I ve had and huge! The jalapeño poppers are tasty but prepare to start cussing cause they are spicy. The fried shrimp, the chicken Cobb and spinach salad have been good. I like blackened catfish as well. My dad always gets chicken fried steak. I never get around to dessert because I m here ufor the onion rings. There s a tubing place right down the street and Gristmill is where we go afterwards.

The food was good, but a little expensive. You get one entree and one side. No bread or anything extra. The chicken fried chicken was $17.50. In my opinion, a lot for lunch. Our server was great. The atmosphere is nice overlooking the river. Wheelchair accessibility: It would be difficult to maneuver a wheelchair and if you have difficulty walking, it is a long way from parking.

Ordered the New York strip steak. Asked for it rare, specifically oiled off the heat at 125-130. It came out with barely any sear, the fat cap wasn t seared properly. For a $35 steak, at least sear it at the proper temp to render the fat and reach the proper internal temp.

This review is long, long, overdue! My mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and I visited San Antonio over Memorial Day weekend. My mother-in-law has a friend that lives within an hour of Gruene and I think she was the one that suggested we go there! I also have a friend that lives in Austin that made the drive to have dinner with us. It was a really special dinner! There was a pretty long wait, which we had expected, because our local friends told us it was a super popular restaurant. We sat outside and they had big fans in the trees that rotated which helped keep us cool! A team member brought us water while we waited. We were seated inside and our server was very friendly! We ordered the onion rings as an appetizer. They were enormous and delicious! I had the Mushroom Chicken special with mashed potatoes and green beans. The portions were extremely generous. I think I only finished about half of my food! Everything was amazing. I added a picture of the Grilled Chicken Pasta Poblano Salad - that s what my sister-in-law got. She loved her food too! The atmosphere was bustling and everyone was having a good time! Thank you, Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar!! Parking: We had to park farther down the street and walk! Not a big deal for us - just thought it was worth noting!!

I have to take back my prior review on the chicken fried steak. Although it was during the buy-one get-one free special, the dinner order on the chicken fried steak was so disappointing. The meat on the interior was less than an eighth inch thick, and the breading was overwhelming. I asked for gravy all over both orders, and got a small dollop on each. It wasn t worth the time or money, even at the reduced rate. This was on 9/23/2024, a little before 8 pm.

9/18/24: We were looking for a nice warm meal. So we came to a nice warm restaurant. Yesterday , lunch was awesome. This time we were the catfish and the shrimp wrapped in bacon brochette. Everything is so tasty. Despite the room temp heat, the food was awesome and the service was quick. 9/17/24: We had an excellent experience! Mackenzie made sure everything came out fast and with a smile. Found out shes native of New Braunfels and she added some good local flavor stories. Speaking of the food, I ordered the broiled shrimp , my wife ordered the fried shrimp with some green beans and everything tasted fantastic and was delivered with a smile!

I recommend it, it is worth it, a good family atmosphere, good flavor, comfortable prices. If you go in summer time the ventilation of the place is not enough for the place, although you eat inside the establishment it feels like you are outdoors because the restaurant is among leafy trees, it is also nice at night it is a special time, there are many stores around the area. Parking: There are many shops, restaurants, and parking is free, you have to wait to find a space, there is a public park...

Your well known, but a healthier version would change your impression! Beef tallow is an original cooking plan for restaurants! But its no longer used. But it is now considered healthier than seed oils! And ...and foods cooked in beef fat...tastes better! Please read this again, if you want to go to another level? Cook only with natural fats! Period!

I discovered The Gristmill in 1977 so my perspective is one involving decades of watching the expansion of the restaurant and the explosion of Gruene. Until recently, I ve been fine with it but it s success is killing it s charm. Too crowded to get service. Tables positioned without access to air-flow from the fans. What used to be delicious garlic mashed potatoes are now just bland mashed potatoes and, worst of all, NO SWEET TEA. This is Texas people and the fact that The Gristmill no longer serves sweet tea has me wondering exactly who owns the place.

The Gristmill in Gruene, TX, is more than just a restaurant its an experience. Nestled in a stunning historic building, this eatery boasts a charming beer garden where you can enjoy live music while waiting for your table. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with plenty of tables and space to accommodate large and small parties alike. The cleanliness of the establishment is impeccable, and the staff is amazing friendly, accommodating, and highly knowledgeable about the menu. What truly sets The Gristmill apart are the breathtaking views from the patio levels, where you can soak in the beauty of the surrounding area while indulging in a memorable meal. Speaking of the food, prepare to be blown away. Our dining experience was exceptional from start to finish. One of our friend ordered the chicken pasta salad, which was a flavor explosion every bite made your taste buds dance with delight. My husband opted for the fried shrimp, which was perfectly seasoned and cooked to golden brown perfection, accompanied by green beans and mushrooms that were simply to die for. As for me, I chose the country club sandwich, and it did not disappoint. Packed with tender turkey, crispy bacon, and creamy avocado, it was a sandwich lovers dream. Whether youre a local or just passing through, The Gristmill is a must-visit destination in Gruene. The combination of delicious food, beautiful surroundings, and top-notch service makes it a place youll want to return to again and again.

My husband and I come here everytime we have a little getaway and it s always been so amazing, it s my husbands fave place HOWEVER we came into town for a surprise 50th bday getaway with our adult kids in tow and girlfriends and it was so embarrassing bringing them here tonight! The food was just ok which really shocked us and all I m gonna say is I don t know if our waiter was having a bad day but he really really wasn t very kind, we felt rushed and even had to pass our own drinks around to everyone at the table after being told to pass those around , no please or anything! Don t know if he was having a bad day but if so, he should ve stayed home and now our experience here has been jaded! I wanted to sing happy bday to my husband (after having a cake brought in earlier in the day) and I wasn t about to ask our waiter to bring the cake and us waste another second of his time! He didn t even get the sides for 2 of our dishes but we didn t want to complain for fear of what his face or mouth would say! We won t be coming back and we started coming here in 2018 yearly! Yes, it may seem extreme but one waiter can ruin you re whole vibe!

Besides our loving the food there, when any family member comes in from out of town, their 1st request is to go to the Gristmill. We enjoy the food so much. The Service is always exceptional. Parking: There is parking directly in front but also a parking lot lit adjacent to the restaurant

To the Manager- please clean your decks. I could tell they hadn t been swept off or leaf blown for years. To top it off a hairball fell from the upper deck onto my menu. The waitress was so embarrassed and we were grossed out. Luckily we hadn t received any food or drinks yet but any other person would Not have stayed for dinner. I moved from my seat so no more hair would fall down. They put us in the worst section section 91 where the service crew had to run back-and forth. We re on the corner so it was a tight fit to get by us. Our waitress was so embarrassed she even said so but she was good at her job and the food we ordered was tasty. I would like to hear from the manager and I would like to hear that they actually will clean their decks. Yes! that will mean they will have to blow off everything and then wipe down the tables but it s better than having huge hairballs flying in your food. This is no exaggeration we all looked up and saw a bunch more human hair hanging by a thread on the ledge of the upper deck.

This place is an absolute classic and must-see if you are anywhere nearby. The building itself is a beautiful old wooden mill positioned beside the river. It s unique and unlike any restaurant you will visit, with multiple levels. Ask to sit on an upper level as the lower level if you want a river view, as the lower level by-the-river seating is mostly blocked by trees. Although, eating among the trees is beautiful too. The only caveat is that it can be a little hot, as there is no air conditioning (except for in the bathrooms, thankfully). Most of the space is large, open air, with plenty of air flow though. The food is excellent, if a little pricey. Try the giant onion rings!

The batter on the chicken fried steak is unlike anything I ve had before. It is crispy and delicious, but it also light. It s not thick like many other restaurants I ve tried. In addition to the lovely, relaxed atmosphere, I was most impressed with the staff. My waitress Mia was wonderful with just the right amount of follow up and always kept my drink full. The entire staff was friendly and smiling. Just a great experience. I m only upset that I didn t make it here sooner.

We came here for Sunday lunch. I was hoping they had a brunch menu, but only lunch. My husband had the trout and it was delish. I had a Bloody Mary and it was very good with all the great accoutrements. Our app was the chip and dip trio, all three were good (2 salsas and a queso). I thought it was a pricey app at $17, but the portion was very big and would be a good option for more people. I wanted this chicken salad with spinach and feta. I ordered the chicken salad but did not notice there were TWO chicken salads right besides eachother. One was called the chicken salad and the other was the chicken spinach salad. So I ended up ordering the salad. The server was so nice and offered to change it but I stuck with it. It wasn t bad, just confusing to have two things so close in name yet different. Oh well, it was good, but next time I would try the spinach salad. Really cool location and atmosphere though. It was open air seating so a bit hot but they had shade and fans going. I d go again for sure!

The wife and I were at Gristmill restaurant yesterday for dinner, the dinner was very good, service awesome, the only bad thing was,it was 108 degrees that day, and inside the dining area the windows were all open, but the inside temperature 102, extremely hot inside, after awhile my wife was not feeling good, until trying to go to the bathroom, she passed out from the heat . You would think this establishment could afford to run A/C for the customers.

The food was remarkable, always the case! But our seating downstairs and outside was not nice. The chairs/benches sat uneven because of trees. And the flies (restaurant near a river) were annoying. And for entertainment, my wife and I observed a floor manager walk around and stand with a scowled look towards a server, for some unknown reason. It made our dining experience a bit distracting.

The venue is such a neat experience. The outside areas are great during nice weather. The restaurant is an old mill which was converted into an amazing restaurant. The service here is impeccable. The servers and bartenders are all knowledgeable and friendly. They take their time to explain menu items and more to you. I was impressed by the food as well. The onion rings are out of this world. The meat had so much flavor, the sides are all seasoned well. The drinks were made just right! Its a favorite of ours and we visit whenever we pass through or make it a duty to stop by. You wont be disappointed.

Sat at a table where the sun was hitting directly over us. Half the table was in direct . Was not asked if we wanted to move. There were plenty of tables under direct shade with fans. The food was delicious, but we had to scarf our food down so we could leave. Was offered one refill of tea.

Great place. Wished that they had fans to create a breeze for the outdoor seating. It was very hot which made for a little uncomfortable eating. But food and atmosphere made it a good time overall. Parking: NO parking at the restaurant. Must park quite a ways away and walk. But there are shops along the way.
