We were there on a Wednesday evening at 5:30 and we are leaving 2 hours later! Food was very good, drinks great, but service was extremely slow and very inattentive. So unfortunate when an old favorite starts failing in service. Too many choices of good restaurants to have to experience this poor service.

I dined at Gaido s restaurant in Galveston, TX, and had an awful experience. A live cockroach was crawling on our table, which was both shocking and disgusting. I ve attached a photo of the incident for reference. We notified the staff immediately, but their only response was to offer us a free dessert. Frankly, that was nowhere near sufficient for the lack of cleanliness and the sheer discomfort we felt. The fact that a reputable restaurant like Gaido s has such an issue is alarming. I won t be returning, and I urge others to be cautious until these sanitation problems are addressed.

Overrated. I stopped by for a late lunch around 2:00pm today, a Monday afternoon. Ill start with the good. I ordered the American Red Snapper Michael for my entree. It was very, very good. One of the best fish dishes I ever had. Thats it for the good stuff at Gaidos. I also ordered a side of five blackened shrimp. They were bland and just meh. The asparagus that came with the fish was ok. The rice that came with the shrimp had a strange taste and I only ate a couple of bites. The waiter was nice but not very attentive. My water glass was never filled. Saving the worst for last. As soon as I walked in the door, I was hit with an unpleasant odor. I cannot use the polite word for this smell as Google will shadow ban it, but it starts with a u and ends with ine. This smell pervaded the whole restaurant, though it was not as bad in the dining area. And finally, I asked the host for a window seat as I wanted to look at the ocean while I dined. He mumbled something about seating me across the aisle from the window seats. So, I had to stare directly past two elderly couples to see the view. I am sure they thought I was a weirdo for staring at them for half an hour. But, the most disappointing thing was that it was not busy, as it was 2:00pm on a Monday afternoon, and there were eight, yes eight, open tables with a window view that were open the ENTIRE TIME I was dining. Why? Ill never be back and do not recommend.

The food is very good maybe a little too well done and the shrimp seem small. Beside the latter I d say the food was excellent. I d give them a 5 star for food but it was 21 minutes from when we sat down until the waiter brought us our drinks. 3 different people stopped by the table to tell us that he had to take a phone call but none of them offered to bring us drinks. So 3 star service that was just fine after we had the very long wait for our drinks. Great food but Gaidos is one of those places that if they weren t located on the seawall they would be struggling because it was not worth $90 including tip for lunch.

We went on a Sunday afternoon for a nice meal after church. There was no wait, which was nice. The Hostess was very nice and cheerful. The atmosphere was for fine dining, which is what we wanted. You start off with a nice loaf of bread and oil over spices. I ordered blackened shrimp over rice. The shrimp was soggy on the underneath. Warm at best. The rice it was on was dry. Like it had set on the plate for a while. The rice that was under the shrimp, had a good flavor, It was just dried out and cold. I order the potato wedges with it and they tasted good. Like a regular JoJo. My husband ordered the tuna steak. It was over cooked. He didn t think it was very good. All in all, the food wasn t that great. The waiter did a good job and we like the atmosphere. A little old school, but we didn t mind that. Would we go again? Maybe if we re already in Galveston.

Please follow and like us at SNDTRAVELS and EATWELLTRAVELOFTEN 9.21.24 38th anniversary Dinner Looking for a nice place to celebrate and this place really fits the occasion. Wonderful atmosphere and excellent staff. We were checked on probably 5 times by management, and the service was friendly and thorough. One of, if not the best, restaurants on the island. We started with the crab claws, and even though its not shown on the menu, we had them make it in lemon butter sauce. They were plentiful and good. They brought out a soft, fresh bread and olive oil with herbs. We love that kind of thing. Diane had the chef special of triple tail (fish) pan fried with an almond crust and parmesan tomatoes. The fish was perfect and flaky with crunchy almonds. Could have used a little more sauce but fantastic. The tomatoes were incredible. Really fresh, ripe taste, and with the parmesan topping, they were something youd want to order every time you go. I had the appetizer on fried soft shell crab. I chose this because the dinner version was fried in a seasoned flour and the appetizer was Panko crusted and I prefer the Panko. Super crispy and just really enjoyed. Because it was our anniversary, they presented us with a free desert. We chose the pecan crunch with ice cream. The crunch is very good but also very rich. Glad we were splitting one. Overall it was the perfect experience we were looking for to have a special evening. Thank you to the entire staff. Highest recommendations two-thumbs up

Wow! This is the best upscale seafood restaurant I ve ever visited, and the history is amazing (opened in 1911). Service was stellar. Our waitress Chelly was super informative with the history of the place, very friendly, punctual, and quick to offer suggestions. The food was insanely good, as well! Pictured below are the crab cake (seriously the best I ve ever had), eight ounce center cut filet steak, the combination snapper platter (with grilled scallops and shrimp). I asked for the almond crusted snapper for a slight up charge. Deserts were crème brûlée and the insanely best pecan pie I ve ever had. Great job, Gaido s! This is a highly recommended staple if you re in Galveston.

Amazing food and strong drinks! Both are well balanced. I had the tuna, and it was so melt in your mouth tender. If the chef reads this, Id suggest adding a soy based sauce with it it would take it to the next level. It was amazing without it. Service was great, and the manager was attentive asking how meals were. Great experience. Definitely check it out. Super fresh

Gaidos is history in Galveston. The atmosphere was perfect, the wait staff was perfect. The appetizer we had was perfect, crostini with shrimp and lump crab in a garlic sauce. However, the red snapper fell flat. It was served on a white plate all by itself no eye appeal at all. We got the lump crab and lobster added, but there was just no flavor. For the price, it needed significant ommph!

Took my parents here on Sunday and was very dissapointed. Bisque was bland with cheap baby shrimp, gumbo was also bland with few seafood inside (other than baby shrimp and no gumbo ingredients inside), the Alfredo pasta was terrible, the dozen oysters were so bad we could only bring ourselsves to eat 6 of the dozen and the stuffed fish with rice I had was completely flavorless and a small portion. I still was sure to leave my waiter over 20 percent due to their good service but we have vowed to not come here again and its a shame because we really wanted to like this place and drove from an hour away to try it out. This was one of the worst seafood meals Ive ever had and my entire table agreed.

Michael our waiter was very cordial and knowledgeable about the menu. The bread and olive oil was fantastic. Great wine selection. The cocktail shrimps were smaller than i was expecting, especially given the proximity to the gulf across the street. However, the shrimps that came with my wife and son s entrees were much better size. I had the pecan crusted snapper with lump crab on top and it was fantastic. It was sweet and not savory, but not in a spicy sweet chili way, but in a way that wasn t enjoyable. Then I ordered combo that yielded the smallest of shrimp and scallops and a 10$ up charge for a pice of redfish that was approx the size of a deck of cards. I spent 41$ on it, and I have to say that the quality of the food was disappointing. The flavor was fine, but for 199$ including tip for two people it won t happen again

Absolutely amazing food and service! Perfect way to finish out our day after Moody Gardens and a stroll on the beach. Fiance had the sautéed scallops and hardly looked up from his meal, as he was too busy devouring the food. Kiddo had sautéed blue crab claws (for the first time. She usually goes for king or snow crab legs, but since they dont have those there [they catch all their seafood from right there in Galveston], she tried these and loved it! Ate every bite). I ordered the filet (medium) because you cant go wrong with that! (and Im not much of a seafood person). The flavor and quality of the meat was above average. Even though its just a little filet, I normally have a few bites left. Not this time! I also had the potatoes au gratin - its a family side, so I was a little worried that it would be too much for me. I ended up sharing, but let me tell you, everyone is going to have to order their own from now on because I certainly could have eaten them ALL they were so good! After such a wonderful meal, we had to try a dessert (even though we were stuffed)! Kiddo and I shared the chocolate mousse - unfortunately, we were left disappointed with that choice - but well definitely try something different next time. Restaurant itself could use a little repair (ceiling tiles, window sills, all of which have been touched by the salt water air, Im sure. I wouldnt say it needs updating, though, because it currently has the charm of the historical aspect of Galveston. The food was wonderful and everyone enjoyed. It did take a little while longer than we wanted - but hey - its fresh food made from scratch and it was well worth the wait! (And still far less of a wait than Rainforest)

Loved everything about Gaido s. Went by the awesome online reviews and were not the least disappointed. The ambience was nice , the server Christan was extremely courteous and helpful with his inputs , AND the food was top- notch ! We ordered a combination platter, charcoal grilled veggies and pasta fettuccini- all done to perfection . The pecan crunch as the dessert was scrumptious - as they say, all s well that ends well

Server was talking so fast, as I m a foreigner I couldn t understand her. I asked to repeat many times she kept talking so fast. And at the end she didn t get my husband s order, we got 3 orders instead of 4. For food I oredered the red snapper it s a very small portion. Nice ambiance but very old decoration. This type of restaurant could be remodeled into nicer vintage finishing.

I ve eaten a lot of meals in my 55 years on earth, but I m hard pressed to think of any better. From the shrimp cocktail, tuna tartare appetizer to the baked stuffed shrimp and the seafood pasta to the desert it was decadent. Kevin was attentive and his suggestions were top notch. 110 year old restaurant 4th generation. I will be going back.

AAAmazing place! Exquisite food. Very nice place. They said you need a reservation but they went ahead and was able to accommodate us. We were unaware of how nice this restaurant was just from Google, but the waiters are tux style and very classy. We had amazing service. Our waitress was so nice and informative. We were there for over 2 hrs but they serve seafood fresh so we had to wait for them to filet the tuna before they could serve us.

First time back since 2013, and prior to that, 1994. First time back in the 70s and was a yearly trek for many years. Same service, excellent food! Wait staff very attentive, cocktails very good and good wine selection. Ahi, crab dip, and grilled oysters were great starters to seared tuna, stuffed shrimp, and blackened scallops.

Ok, dinners out, in my opinion are about the people you are dining with more than the food. The food is a conduit for conversation, when the food impresses, the dinner and conversation is better. The appetizers, softshell crab and calamari were impressive. The entrees however were a different story. By our upbringing it is not polite for a person to complain about the food for fear of ruining the atmosphere of the meal. Last night was like that. I took my family and friends to celebrate my daughter earning her white coat from UTMB. Our conversations and the atmosphere were very nice. BUT the fish was very overcooked and served late. I ordered Mahai and it was tough and over cooked. The pecan crusting was black. My wife ordered the Golden Tile the chefs special, apparently flown in from Costa Rica. It was a waste of a flight as the meat was way over cooked, ruined actually. None of the other diners commented on their dinners, and I dont blame them, they are polite well raised people. I think what happened is the line cook, not chef. got overwhelmed and our fish either sat under the lights too long or was microwaved to warm it up after sitting. Fish will cook in own juices after you take it off heat, so it needs to be served quickly. Anyway, One Desert was free and very well prepared, we enjoyed the Brownie and Key Lime Cheesecake and Cappuccinos. Actually they were the best part of the meal. Sorry it was not an exception meal but fish served should not have the texture of the sole of a topsider. I needed a knife to eat the fish!!! For the Tourists, order fried stuff. Parking: Easy enough

A seafood restaurant that will remind you of the good food and great service that was once common. The menu is full of the seafood so many people look forward to when they come to the coast. The soft-shell crabs are delectable, as is the fried platter. But honestly, theres no bad options. The server was kind and conversational, and he talked about how much he enjoyed working at the restaurant. Make a point to get to Gaidos when youre in Galveston; theres nothing better on the island. Its white table cloth, though they were kind about my not knowing that ahead of time. To be honest, Id make a point of going back to the Texas Gulf Coast just to break bread at a restaurant that really understands how to provide an extraordinary dining experience. Oh, and the desserts are fantastic

Our recent dinner at Gaidos in Galveston was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we walked in, the classic old-school fine dining atmosphere set the perfect tone for the evening. We started with the spinach and artichoke dip, which was simply amazing creamy, flavorful, and the perfect appetizer. For the main course, we had the stuffed shrimp and the grilled platter featuring snapper, scallops, and shrimp. Every bite was a testament to the restaurants commitment to fresh, delicious seafood. The snapper was perfectly cooked, the scallops were tender, and the shrimp were bursting with flavor. Gaidos truly lived up to its reputation, delivering a dining experience that combines fantastic food with a timeless, elegant setting. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Galveston!

Visited this restaurant on two different occasions on visits to Galveston. A must try! If you ve been around since 1911, you must be doing something right. Delicious food and perfect location with view of the gulf. We had a party of six. We had calamari/crab spinach dip appetizers. We all got different dishes from crawfish pasta, shrimp and grits, crab stuffed shrimp, to pecan crusted mahi mahi. Everyone ranted and raved! Parking: It s best to park around side of restaurant in designated lot across from the restaurant. The front fills quickly and a little tight.

Two-and-a-half hours at the table, for a table of four way too slow. Drinks were watered down by the time I got them. Great atmosphere, great food, slow service. Will try again.

Not impressed for the price!! The lighting was horrible, I m all for a romantic glow, but I like to be able to see my menu. Ordered a salad without onions and it came loaded with onions and the waiter said here s your salad with no onions, which I thought he was making a joke, much too my surprise he was obviously too dense to realize those were onions on the top of it. And expect to drop some cash at this place. Too expensive for the quality of food served.

Gaido s is a Galveston institution. I went to UT with one of the old man s grandsons and have always loved the restaurant, it s pure regal Old Galveston at its finest. I used to marvel as kid how the waiters, most from UTMB, could memorize your order with no pad for reference, it was very Gaido s thing as were their uniforms. I usually now hit Nick s next door for a great Hamburger and their great Onion Rings but I still hit the ole grand dame sometimes. You CANNOT come to Galveston and not go to Gaido s, I think it s actually in the city charter

By @iwanttobewhatieat The historic establishment of @gaidosseafood in Galveston, TX, slayed for lunch. Fresh caught that morning, blue crab claws and pecan-crusted mahi mahi were incredible. Finished it off with house-made bread pudding. Hands down a must if you are in Galveston. Service was great. Atmosphere is such a vibe of being inside a luxury ocean liner from the 1920s.

Made reservations 2 months in advance for an anniversary. Start to finish was disappointing. Gaidos has lost its way. We will not be back until the place gets a uplift and menu is focused around texas gulf shore cuisine. Catfish and crawfish do not belong on the Gaidos menu or any seafood restaurant. What a disgrace. Galveston deserves better. And they do not enforce dress code anymore. Not even a 3 star restaurant now.

I recently dined at Gaido s in Galveston. While I didn t try all the dishes, I tried dish was just okay. The restaurant feels somewhat overrated, and the prices are higher compared to other seafood spots in the area. However, its location across from the beach offers a pleasant ambiance. Overall, it s a good restaurant with a nice atmosphere, but the food and prices could be better.

A beautiful restaurant but many aspects of it need improvement. The food portion of pecan crusted fish is very small. Our waiter was slow to bring items to the table even when he suggested items. When he served us our food, he brought the plate so close to my face I had to turn away. Matter of fact, he did this motion several times of reaching over me. While waiting for our meal, a local drunk guy pressed his breast against the window next to us and walked away laughing about it. Seems this restaurant needs to be relocated in a better area of the seawall. I will not return to Gaidos ever again!!!

With our amazing waiter Wyatt, he lets us know this family restaurant being around since 1911 plus everything handmade. My dish I must brag about is the Shrimp Peques everything from the rice to the bacon wrap Shrimp with cheese and jalapeños top with a brown sugar sauce is tasty. Amazing! Was the first words that came out. As for the other dishes ... well you know its good if they make a happy place in mins. Sorry I couldnt give a review on those. Awesome food, really awful service. I am glad that the place got so many good reviews, as that usually means the owners really care and work hard for a good experience and that our experience was an exception (I hope). Service makes the night for me, a thousand times more than the food. The two fellows welcoming us at the restaurant last night were just awful. We almost walked out right then, but the place has a romantic feel. The food was actually quite amazing, and we ve been everywhere in the world. The server ignored us, with drinks, and any and all requests. I know how hard it is to get good help, so I guess showing up is sometimes just amazing and that is all the staff we met that night did for us. We had dessert elsewhere.
