Got The Dirty South. Amazing!!! Restaurants around the country have gone up in prices but down in portions and quality, but not the South. Food is amazing. It s one of the few restaurants where my wife and I are happy with the taste, price and portions. It s worth it.

This was my first time here. It was highly recommended by my son. I am from Louisiana, so I think I know GREAT Louisiana cuisine. I had the shrimp po-boy, YUMMY with the freshest bread ever! I also got the jambalaya to take home and it was fantastic. The owner warned me it had a little heat to it. He was right, but not too much for me. I recommend this restaurant for true Louisiana cajun cooking! I will be going back!

Authentic Louisiana! Meat pies and crawfish pies just like the ones you get when you pass through Natchitoches. Their fish sandwich is delish! The dirty rice is AMAZING (this isnt something Id consider ordering at a restaurant normally but do yourself a favor and get it!). The cornbread! I mean just everything we have had is good. The owners are from Louisiana so the food is authentic and they are the nicest people. Happy hour specials too!

The South in Wylie is an absolute gem! The food is fantastic, offering a delightful blend of Southern comfort and Cajun flair that keeps you coming back for more. The atmosphere is equally fantastic, with a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home. But what truly sets The South apart are the owners. They are absolutely adorable and go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels special. Their attentive service and genuine hospitality make dining here a memorable experience. If you re in Wylie, don t miss out on this wonderful spot!

8/30/24: Neighbor and I stopped by for lunch. This was our first visit. It was pretty busy and we sat at the bar. This a small location, there are several tables, and the bar sits five. We sat at the bar. Porter took our order, and he was very friendly. He also was tending to the bar, and running the food out from the kitchen. The food took about 25 minutes to come out, and it was nice and hot. My neighbor had the shrimp platter, which had about six two bite shrimp, a couple of tiny hushpuppies and coleslaw. I had the chicken sandwich with fries. Looking at the menu, the 16 PoBoys seemed pretty expensive. The restaurant is nicely decorated, and there are TVs throughout. Parking is plentiful, and its easy access from the street.

First time in. We loved it. Ordered Catfish basket and Oyster basket. The batter and seasoning were unique and flavorful - but they respected their ingredients. You could taste where the catfish came from (in the best way possible). The oysters (so easy to screw up fried oysters) were perfectly cooked and tasted like they should. The fries (double-fried) were perfect. The hush puppies were clearly hand-made, loaded with onions and spices, and a good cornbread. The whole meal tasted home-cooked and home-made. Service was amazing, too. The manager came out to ask about our meal; then brought us a complimentary jambalaya ball (fried ball of chicken & sausage jambalaya), which blew us away. Smokey and flavorful. 100%, will be back!

The flavor of everything we ate was amazing. Everything was fresh and beautifully cooked. The seasoning on the fries was delicious. The catfish had flavor, and wasn t bland like sometimes happens at restaurants. The hush puppies were perfect and made me think of my grandmother! The Jambalaya ball had a wonderful smokey flavor and smell. Also, it was really cold in there. So, if you need out of the hot Texas heat, it s a good spot. lol!

This place is a perfect place to try, and as a southern girl from deep Georgia, I used to eat cornbread for breakfast, but I have never had such a sweet, moist and mouthwatering piece of cornbread before. This place deserves 10 stars, I can t wait to see how successful this place is! Amazing experience.

We ordered a boudin ball, meat pie, fried shrimp tacos and red beans and rice. Wife said best boudin balls she ever had and I agree. Meat pie was real good but needs some sauce also. Tacos were very very good and red beans and rice were excellent. As we were getting in the car owner came out and gave us jambalaya ball to try with our leftovers. Will be back. Update. Had the jambalaya ball with dinner. Dang. It might be better than boudin ball.

The chicken wings aren t as pictured on the site. Besides it being comically too much batter, and with some pieces the batter wasn t thoroughly cooked, I think they also might use soy sauce or something in the batter that makes it adhere to the chicken to where it oddly stretches when you pull it off (I didn t like it) The chicken is a one star. However I ordered the Cajun combo also. I was surprised that it only came with one catfish filet, and some of the shrimp were fresh out the grease while others were Luke warm they get the 3 stars. The red beans and rice were good, the greens tasted like a can of glory greens that have things added to make them seem like they weren t from a can. Until they change how they fry the chicken, I wouldn t waste my time ordering chicken from here, but maybe the seafood is worth a visit. (I d definitely always substitute the fries)

MUST TRY!! Customer service was absolutely amazing. I met the owner and he didnt mind answering my 20 questions and gave me some background on the restaurant. I ordered the Catfish with seasoned fries and a side of greens. Catfish was well seasoned, fried to perfection and the greens had a little kick to it not overbearing but good flavor. I also tried the Jambalaya ball the way the flavors, rice, sausage all came together DELICIOUS I WILL DEFINITELY COME BACK. I forgot to take a picture beforehand. Definitely get the cornbread... chef kisses

This is a cute place, friendly staff and horrible food. I wanted so badly for this to be what I was expecting, seemed to be all frozen food that I could buu at Walmart. I ordered a catfish basket that had one piece of catfish, a small amount of fries, two small hush puppies that were doughy inside and honestly, it was just soaked in grease, just prepackaged frozen food, fried in a deep fat fryer. The Fried Mushrooms were inedible, jalapeno poppers were right out of a freezer bag and also soaked in grease. So one catfish basket, 2 appetizers and a bowl of gumbo set me back almost $60 which included a 5 dol tip on my to-go order. Very disappointed. We like to support our local restaurants, but this one advertised home cooking, if that means grocery store frozen and deep fried than that is accurate. Any sign of Southern home cooking is non existent here.

I needed something to compliment my delicious homemade lunch plate and ventured into your restaurant for a piece of cornbread. When I uncovered the cornbread and took my first bite it tasted more like a piece of cake, like corn cake, overly sweet. I was truly disappointed and won t be going back for seconds. On a separate visit, the jambalaya struck a sour chord when I found myself chewing on soft chicken skin. My taste buds were anticipating other flavors and textures than what was served - JTMACE62

One word. WOW! I am from East Texas and not too terribly far from the Louisiana state line. When we moved to the DFW area, the Cajun food scene has been lacking to say the least. The South is an absolute breath of fresh air. I was in absolute heaven. We started with the etoufee meat pie... my kids hesitated trying it (they are the pickiest eaters) and they ended up fighting over it! You definitely have to try it. My daughter and I split the Fat Cajun Fried combo with catfish, shrimp, hushpuppies, and fries. It was delectable in EVERY single bite. The fish was seasoned to creole perfection. The filets werent too thick and not too thin and hand breaded with a great balance of cornmeal and flour. They were crispy, light and darn near made me slap the back of my head with my tongue! The shrimp were, much to my surprise, hand breaded and fried. They were just a touch over cooked, but the flavor made up for it and then some!!! The french fries were seasoned and breaded to the perfect crispness. My children generally do not like french fries (weird, I know), but they were literally fighting over them. My son, although he ordered a bowl (which is a massive serving) of red beans and rice, was begging to share the fish, shrimp, and french fries. The red beans and rice... and culinary staple in our home growing up... the bar is set HIGH. They knocked it SO far out of the park. I was happy to share my fish and shrimp with my son because he let me share his beans and rice. The potlicker those beans was so rice, thick, creamy, and hearty. They were seasoned on point. This was hands down the best Cajun food we have had since moving here almost 8 years ago. We LOVED it and will be back again and again!!!

The South just didnt cut the mustard for me and my family . The Atmosphere did not play well. The chicken wings were awful the crawfish were void of flavor. The chicken wings had this hard dry crust, and didnt have a good taste. How do you mess up a chicken wing. Im a huge fan of chicken wings. Thats why I ordered them, I ordered the 8 piece, and threw 6 pieces in the trash. My husband ordered the catfish which was dry and flat not fluffy and juicy. My son said the shrimp was okay, but he doesnt want to go back, neither does my husband. Red beans and rice was okay, so was the casserole. But not worth going back and spending $90.00 for. Ill just keep going to my favorite restaurant Pappadeaux. Sorry The South, but our family wont be back. Sorry .

Update 03.24.24 below at the end. May I ask? If this was helpful please like this review. A must try. My family (with 2 kids) went on a Saturday during lunch. It was a little busy however the food still came out HOT and fast. The staff was very friendly and took their time to explain everything since it was our first time. The fried okra was fresh. The Dirty rice was delicious especially if you like it DIRTY lots of flavor! The red beans and rice were great. In the future Id order it w Dirty rice instead of white rice. Chicken wings are superb plain original flavor lightly battered wings. Other customers all had the boudin balls that looked Great and the fried catfish looked great. (lots of food envy) My wife being from Louisiana loved it. We look forward to coming again. *Update: We still visit quite often l. We really enjoyed the Boudin and Jambalaya Balls. The Jambalaya Balls are new to me. So much flavor, it almost tastes like they use some kind of smoked meat in there. Also, very limited while its in season is the whole boiled Crawfish. 10/10. True Louisiana Style. Perfectly soaked, juicy, with the perfect spice level.

Excellent food in a small, but inviting atmosphere that is very clean with friendly staff. There were some growing pains for multiple of our early visits, but the staff and management are very communicative and most of those have been ironed out for our more recent visit. This is a very popular spot, or at least when we timed our anecdotes, so ordering ahead, coming in off hours etc. is recommended. At least for your first visit to ensure you have the best experience possible. Our latest visit was very snappy, so this may not even be warranted anymore. Easy five-star recommendation from me as the food is tremendous. The fried batter is my preference of thin with a nice crisp to it and the seasoning is wonderful. The catfish is deliciously flaky and can easily be cut with a fork yet is not too brittle and doesnt shred when you dont want it to. Cocktail and tartar sauces are great and supplement the flavor - I like condiments and these are good. Portions are generous in staying with the Cajun motif I enjoy. Gumbo, meat pie, fried okra were all delicious. Eager to try more dishes/sides and especially want to give the po boys a go.

The content of the menu is clear and focused without being restrictive. Everything we had was executed with an almost unbelievable quality, especially given how young the business is! We had the opportunity to speak with the owner multiple times, and he (along with the whole staff) was friendly, inviting, and attentive. The take on the Jambalaya (which I had) was a little unorthodox, but theres no question about the balance and flavor of the dish; it was excellent. I also had the hushpuppies, and the seasoning and texture on these were better than anything Ive had before. Also excellent. The only negative I can think of is the physical space that the restaurant has! It is very modern, clean, and well-maintained, but the layout of the construction means that there are no booths! Even so, its clear that the management have thought about how to make the most of the space to keep it as functional and comfortable as possible, given the constraints. I canot more highly recommend a restaurant in Wylie! This is some of the best food available in the northern Dallas area.

Our initial experience going here was such a welcome relief from the normal experience of going to other good restaraunts in the area. The one thing we quickly bought into. Was the owners passion for the food he prepares and creates. It has now become our go to Restaraunt. The Authentic Dirty Rice, Cornbread, anything weve ordered is a prized posession when leftovers are brought home.. We were initially greeted with a warm smile. Now its become a warm embrace asking how our lives, days are going. My girlfriend saw the posts on FB saying how great the food is Im here to tell you... youre going to love it. We really wanted to like this place, we were excited to go all week. We arrived placed the order and then waited for 1 hour. Someone that came in after me about 10 to 15 minutes after I placed my order complained that he waited 45 minutes and had to go and wanted his money back and wanted to cancel his order. They refunded his money and told him his food was almost ready. A minute later his food came out. I was shocked, I had been there longer and he complains gets food before me and the others that were still waiting that came in after me. I did not think that was cool at all. I then complained, asked to cancel my order. I was told my food was next. I told them I didn t want it and wanted a refund. They did refund my money and still gave me the food. Which I didn t want at that point. We get home and the food was not eatable. It was cold, soggy and very salty (we live a mile away) We had to throw all the food away and go eat somewhere else. I appreciate them making it right but I won t be back.

Let me start with the good! The food is hot, fresh and very flavorful. I ll be back for that. Let s start with my experience on a Friday night. This is a small restaurant to say the least. Clearly a hot spot on a Friday evening at 6:30 pm. With only 7 inside tables and 2 outdoor tables, and 5 place sittings at the bar. On this Friday night they couldn t hold the volume and demand of popularity they appeared to have. We waited for 25 minutes and hadn t seen any food come out of the kitchen. With a full house that s not a good sign. We did see patrons leave noticing how full it was. We ordered an appetizer of fried pickles and hadn t received anything. Although the cashiers were hustling about, being this was our first visit we stayed to get to taste the food! At about 30 mins we finally saw food leave the kitchen; encouraging but there were 3 tables prior to ours still without food. Lots of drinks were being made at the bar, but not much food from the kitchen. When my husbands food did arrive, 40 mins in, it smelled wonderful. I will say the cornbread is dense but spongy and flavorful at the same time. I ll come back for the corn bread and for the flavors in the food. At 51 mins I got my chicken sandwich. Mine and my husbands food didn t arrive at the same time. Although everything tasted wonderful. As did the fries and fried pickles. Small critique patrons need a place to get their own napkins, refills, and to take their own trash. It would help the restaurant if patrons cleared their own tables. From baskets served and trash that way others have open tables to eat. Tables could cleared faster especially given the small number of them. I felt rushed to eat, to allow others to have space to sit. I couldn t enjoy the atmosphere much. Perhaps we ll come back during a slower time. Get the food to go, that s going to be your best experience as I ve witnessed so far.

Growing up in Southern Louisiana, I was excited to try The South southern kitchen. My fiance and I tried almost everything on the menu. The boudin balls were delicious yet spicy with light breading. The gumbo was authentic southern Louisiana gumbo but was not spicy. The red beans and rice were tasty but needed more of a kick. The cornbread was also authentic southern cornbread. The shrimp poboy was filled with juicy shrimp lightly breaded in an amazing blend of spices. The margaritas were very good but not potent at all. The bar was small but seemed to be stocked well. The establishment was clean and tidy. The staff was friendly and gracious. Crawfish was brought out to us that we didnt order, and I immediately dove in because I love crawfish. It was very spicy and burned my throat, but thats how it is supposed to be. Everything was fresh and tasty, and I cant wait to see how far The South restaurant goes.

The shrimp poboy had absolutely no flavor, salt, Seasonings of any kind and was more of a sandwich because the bread was cut all the way through. So it was a complete mess! Boudain ball was disgusting if the filling is from their version of dirty rice not good at all. Even the fries had no flavor it looked Seasoned but Im sorry Im a Louisiana native and this is definitely not southern cuisine. Its someones version of what they think southern cuisine is and it is a complete fail. Will not be returning.
