I thought we were going to really enjoy this place. I ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they were having an off day. All I know if the appetizer of ceviche was very tasteless and tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for hours. The salsa was very strange tasting no flavor but bubbly like if they put mineral water in it. Probably not a good sign my agua fresca was so watered down I got the watermelon one and it tasted like water with a hint of watermelon. I m not trying to be rude or put down the restaurant but I must be truthful in hopes they will put more effort into the dishes they serve. They have potential but I m not sure what happened this time.

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience here. The air conditioning struggled to keep the space cool, and if you are seated at the bench seat underneath it, you get dripped on. It is very loud, and that makes it hard to hear what the server is saying. That may have contributed to the wrong food issue we had. It took 45 minutes from the time we ordered to receive our food. If you sit indoors, you are served a small glass of room temperature water that they are slow to refill. If you sit outdoors, you are served tall glasses of ice water. I don t know how quickly they refill water outdoors. We ordered the salsa sampler. The salsas were good, but the tortilla chips were not chips. They were quarters of corn tortillas that had been placed in frying oil for a bit . They were oily and chewy instead of crisp. Two in our party ordered enchiladas verdes. The rice and beans were flavorless and cold, and the chicken was very dry. One in our party ordered the surf and turf quesadilla. When it arrived, it looked more like a taco, so I asked if she was sure it was the quesadilla? She said yes, the quesadillas are open. Later, she said it was actually not the correct item and that they were making the quesadilla. She offered it to us packaged to go, but it was not ready by the time we left. My taco al pastor was great.

BALCON Comedor y bar offers an excellent dining experience. The food was superb, with flavors that truly impressed. The margarita was amazing in taste, though a bit small for the price. The location is right next to a busy street and train tracks, so it can get quite noisy at times, which might not be ideal for a quiet dinner. The restaurant wasnt very crowded during my visit, raising some concerns about its long-term viability. Nonetheless, its worth a visit for the delightful food and drinks. Heres hoping more people discover this hidden gem!

I started going to MaCoCo when they first opened in Austin. Super happy they opened Balcon here in San Marcos.! If you want authentic Baja California food, this is it.!! Nice, place with outdoor seating for cooler temps. Vanessa was an attentive but not intrusive waitress. Would definitely return. My carne asada quesadillo also had shrimp and was delicious. Balcon is a great little Mexican restaurant on the second floor of a building, so it s unsuspecting. The space inside is clean, simple and intimate, and there s a nice outdoor area as well. The place has a good look and feel and while we ate there for brunch, I ve heard the place is lit up with candles in the evening for a really nice romantic ambience. The food is really good and we had the migas, chilaquiles, breakfast burrito, and huevos rancheros, and everything was delicious. We ordered a couple of drinks and the aqua fresca were tasty. The cucumber being our favorite. As for the Oaxacan passion margarita with orange juice, I feel this had too much orange juice and not enough mezcal. It should be a simple fix to make this a better Margarita, but they d have to adjust the ingredients. Overall at thumbs up for this place. Went here in a date with my fiance. Was super excited because I read the food was more like the California/Baja style Mexican food and I ve been missing it! I m from Texas but was stationed in San Diego for 8 years. First off the drinks were very good, atmosphere was great (the outside heaters didn t work but they let us move inside), service was really good too! My fiance loved his fish tacos! I was unfortunately very unhappy with my tacos. I ordered two carne asada tacos at $6 each, and they don t come with any sides. The tortilla was cracking, the meat was over marinated and the flavor was off. I m hoping this was just a bad day because everything else tasted great! I ll come one more time to check and will update this review once I do.

Some friends highly recommended this place to us, and we had a great first experience on our date night at Balcón. Vanessa, our server, was very attentive and knowledgeable. She was able to ask the right questions to provide the perfect suggestions for both drinks and meal. The carne asada taco was delicious, as were the warm chips with guacamole and the churro donut for dessert. The restaurant is located above Otsu Asian Bistro on Stagecoach. Since it was a nice evening, the garage window/doors were open we could look out over the city. There were also heaters around to keep things comfortable as the night cooled off. The music was lively and not too loud so we could still hear each other. We will definitely go back!

We don t go out to eat that much, but we ate here twice in 5 days!- once for lunch and once for dinner, and they were both fantastic. Seriously some of the best and most elevated Mexican food (and flavors) we have had in a long time. The drinks were as pretty as they were enjoyable, and the food was SO SO GOOD! As a California native. I have yet to find a good fish taco in the last two years in Texas. I give this place a 10 out of 10 The fish tacos were perfect, The Homeade tortillas Phenomenal , Fish was fresh and cooked to perfection ,the cabbage was fresh And pico de gallo was wonderful. Local Love: We just tried the newly opened El Balcon in San Marcos. It used to be Elevate pre-Covid, but then it shut down during the pandemic. It is a cute and cozy rooftop space with indoor/outdoor seating. Elevate was definitely more of a bar, but El Balcon is the perfect combination of full service bar and great elevated Mexican cuisine - the corn tortillas are legit. WOW! This is exactly what San Marcos needed. We stopped by around 5pm on a Friday to enjoy their $5 happy hour (this quality and price can t be beat) we had the classic margarita and the ranch water. Then we accompanied this with the churro donuts. DO NOT SKIP THE CHURRO DONUTS!!!! We will absolutely be back to have dinner, unfortunately we just had time for drinks and dessert tonight. I was excited that San Marcos would finally get an upscale restaurant. We desperately need a restaurant that leans into the romantic, high-end, post-college sophisticated vibe. Balcon was supposed to be the restaurant to usher San Marcos into that sphere. Unfortunately, when I went last week, I was extremely disappointed. The food fell short of what the vibe was promising. I have never had more bland food in my life. The Mexican rice was just overcooked white rice mixed with tomato paste - nothing else. I had the Enmoladas, and the chicken was like sandpaper. The water tasted like it was straight from the river - and not in a good way. On top of the sub-par food and weird-tasting water - our table was wobbly due to improper leveling. On the plus side, their cocktails and churro donuts were delicious. I highly recommend trying their churro donuts. Their service was great! No complaints about the awesome waitstaff - they were great. Overall, Balcon needs to restructure their menu to include flavor and level their tables before I try them again. Feel free to try it, but I would rather spend less money and go to Torchys Tacos. At least there, I wouldnt spend $100 on bland food.

LONG REVIEW: As a San Diegan, I could quickly tell the California/Baja vibe the restaurant encompasses. Balcón offers authentic Californian and Baja style food. Great change to the TexMex often seen in the area. We will be back! Overall pros and cons: -Pros: Food was tasty, fresh, & authentic to the Mexican food in Southern CA. Drinks were overall good. Service was excellent! Vibes and ambience were great! -Cons: Pricing was comparable to big cities, high for the area (took off a star for that). They ran out of churro donuts. Our table tasted the following food options: 1. Salsa sampler: 3 salsas offered. Pico, red, & green. All good and fresh (green was our favorite) 2. Carne asada fries: tasty and similar to SD carne asada fries 3. Flautas: 4 came in the order and were very good. Guac with the flautas was delicious and fresh 4. California burrito: sooo good! The tortilla was delicious. Authentic to SD California burritos 5. Carne asada quesadilla: handmade corn tortilla. Very good but on the smaller side 6. Ensenada fish tacos: very flavorful with handmade tortillas. Definitely tasted like Baja style fish tacos We had the following drinks: 1. Ma Coco Classico: very strong margarita! 2. Fresh, interesting food and cool vibe is exactly what San Marcos needed. We love this new addition to our dining out choices. We had elote, fish tacos, carne asada tacos , and a churros donut delicious. Parking: Parking lot behind building Wheelchair accessibility: Wheelchair accessible entrance is behind building go inside for elevator.

WE needed this restaurant in San Marcos. Its a great vibe with amazing food and drinks. I will be a regular here. Finally we are starting to get some Austin type restaurants here!!!

Just had an impromptu birthday dinner at Balcón and it was absolutely perfect! The tuna tostada was incredible, the Oaxacan passion was perfection, and we split the carne asap plate which was cooked to perfection. We Will absolutely be back. So glad to see new places like this in San Marcos!! Tip: try to churro donuts!!

New favorite spot in San Marcos! The food and drinks were creative and super flavorful. We had the elote, the tuna tostada, and the carne asada plate. All of them were incredible. Reminds me of La Condesa in Austin in the best way

Great new spot in town! The vibe is great. Casual but still moody. Outdoor seating is a huge plus. Great margaritas and AMAZING food. Must try if you re living in the area or traveling through.
