A bite of history just off the square, Gils boasts of being San Marcos oldest restaurant. I enjoyed their chili burger with some water water and loved their cinnamon roll (manske roll). I appreciate a place that seems to serve fast food but cares enough to only serve you your dessert at the end of your meal, when it can be perfectly warm. Gils has several tables & booths under a wall of old photos of the city. Parking is available along nearby streets.

Love Gil s however I ve noticed the reduced the size of the burgers . I understand with this fledgling economy it s difficult to keep prices low, but don t reduce the product to what it use to be. If you have to charge higher prices so be it.

This is my favorite burger place around. The burgers are delicious and what we love about them is that they are simple. No frills, just a good old fashioned style burger. We had the tots for the first time this past weekend and they were really good! We took some friends who loved the chili cheese fries. And the Manske Rolls are always great! They are so unique and are such a nice treat.

First there is no parking, so I drove around three times looking for parking, then I pulled into icy rolls to get a mocha frap and then went down to get a manske roll since it had been 20 years since we moved from San Marcos and it was my husbands only request for me to bring back from my trip. But the rolls where not done so I waited 15 minutes which was worthy because the rolls are amazing! But my rental car was towed. The signs by icy rolls do not say anything except that the parking lot is city parking lot. It does not include what businesses are allowed to use said lot. I was told that by noon the day I was there that they had already towed 100 cars. Seems to be some sort of scam going on with subway and the tow company and maybe the city. All the buisnesses in this block are connected. There is no way for someone to understand that its not together when the whole block is one big building of multiple buisnesses. I dont understand a city that would treat visitors this way and cause businesses their customers because believe me I will NEVER go back to San Marcos and I guess I just had my last ever Manske Roll. Which is a shame.....and a shame on the city of San Marcos, TX.

This place did not disappoint, came in with my kids after having read another post about the food here. We had the 1/2 lb Original burgers and they were hot, fresh and very juicy, absolutely delicious. We then had Manske rolls, one with ice cream, one with chocolate and one with bacon. They were so delicious, served hot with plenty of melted butter on the plate. I definitely recommend giving Gils a try.

There was a puddle of water in the walkway going to the counter that no one touched the whole time we were there. One girl was cooking, delivering orders, and taking orders. Another guy was making the icing for the manske roles and filling ice. Both of them looked like they just rolled out of bed. No gloves! Just switching from serving and cooking. When we finally got out rolls, they were cold and mid. Not what we expected. The guy kept saying he burnt the icing so that s why it was taking so long. If there was cooking involved then why were they cold. We could also see the floor in the kitchen from counter. Yikes! Tables were not clean. Whole place needs a good cleaning. Oh and don t try to get coffee with your roll because they no longer sell it.

Made my burger without any gloves! Watched the girl who took my order touch the register, then go to the rolls on the rack, grabbed it with her bare hands, then slapped a piece of meat on the grill, again with NO GLOVES, and began assembling my burger. Needless to say I trashed the burger. I m not getting sick. I don t care how good the food is or how many reviews you have or quite frankly if you are the oldest restaurant in town WEAR GLOVES WHEN MAKING/TOUCHING FOOD!

First time in the area and heard this place was great. Walked in and wasnt greeted by the staff (staff of 2 people). Cashier seemed to be texting. I had to ask if we just sit wherever we wanted. I thought there was a menu so I went up to see if I could find one. Just saw a M-F daily specials and the manske roll menu. Maybe I missed the food menu? I just ended up looking online for it. Noticed there was only 1 cook so I figured our food would take a while. Went to the back to use the bathroom, and it smelled like mold back there. As we were still figuring out what to order we decided to leave. The employees just didnt seem interested in basic customer service and we felt it. Ended up coming to another place down the road.

Overall the burger was good. I liked the smaller brioche style bun. The meat was a bit overcooked. I ordered the onion rings , they could have been delicious but, burned & too salty. I wished I could give a better review. The first time I ate at Gil s Broiler was 1972. I ll try the Manske Rolls next time. Thank you Parking: I spent more time trying to park. About 30 min. More than the time I was actually eating. Would be nice if there was a parking garage.

Ok so this is a college town..Gils is so great in a lot of ways. My wife and I took our twin daughters to visit TX State in San Marcos. We finish the tour and head downtown cause we havent eaten all day. We pass Gils and a young man invited us to see an art exhibit so we stopped..great experience. Manske rolls are not the same as they used to be but they are close and Definitely still good. The other food is ok but something is different from what it used to be for so many years as a San Marcos Staple. The atmosphere has changed from when I thought little people used to live in the clay Adobe houses/levels that welcomed you above the entrance and the authentic Indian drum in the corner that just begged to be played by every child and Man child who entered the place. And dont forget the Indian teepee with a fire to capture every childs imagination.

Literally a vibe! I was looking at the sign outside which has the amazing looking food items on there. As I was looking at the board, Madison while wiping the outside window greeted me and begun telling me about this food and the delicious desert rolls. Honestly I was already visually interested but she was selling the amazing food to my ears, so I went inside where I was introduced to will and Jacob who equally supported her claims of the food. So I love, on principle, small restaurants. I will happily seek out a little diner over any chain, always. So when I saw this little place, I was naturally caught in a nostalgic headspace, then the Manske roll...ahh-mazing. Buttery cinnamon cloud not gummy, but perfectly cooked even in the dead center. Cinnamon rolls seem to go gummy in their centers often, but this one, I loved its cooked through, not dried out. I split one and tried their Manske latte, yea, you want them both. Added nothing because they perfectly combined. Check out the hidden poster room, its superfun!

You get a sense of history walking up to the counter of what s famed as the oldest restaurant in San Marcos. Quaint wooden booths line most of the outer walls and dim evening lighting is ideal for calm conversation and tasty food. Simple and albeit greasy comfort food is the staple along with the beloved cinnamon roll. I appreciated the fast turnaround for my order of a cheese burger and Frito pie. Portions were just right!

I was super impressed by this place! Kind of unassuming on the outside, but if youve got a sweet tooth, you have to try this place. I went on Friday with a couple of friends and got the dine in 2 for 1 Manske roll special and was pleasantly suprised. These things are AMAZING! Theyre like cinnamon rolls but with Texas Roadhouse cinnamon butter instead of icing. Hot and fresh and perfect for the cold weather months. Plus, you can get em with a bunch of yummy toppings! A friend of mine and I were on our way to San Antonio for a little girls weekend and she mentioned that we had to stop at (what she knew to be named) Gils Hamburgers for a Manske roll. Not the Gils I remember. First the hours of operation. They close at 5. GILs used to stay open later. 2nd they used to have fresh brewed ice tea. All they have now is bottled sweetened tea. I am hypoglycemic and cant drink sugary drinks. I want to support local but will be going to in/out instead.

I just bought my boyfriend and I burgers from Gils on Tuesday August 3rd, 2021. We havent had burgers from there since we were kids. Were from San Marcos. OMG their manske rolls are to dead for. So buttery,savory and sweet oh and adding ice cream will just send you over broad with flavors. Make sure you grab any of their burgers, definitely a bang for your buck and great combinations. Definitely worth the drive from San Antonio, we will be back.

Nice little hole in the wall with grilled foods and plenty of room to sit. Burgers and chicken sandwiches are standard fare nothing special but the tater tots are the bomb. Actually though we all know why youre visiting...yup the Manske rolls. Giant cinnamon rolls fresh and hot ready to order. Definitely a must to try even if you dont stay for the other items on the menu.

Had an awesome birthday dinner at Gils. My first time there and in San Marcos. Excellent juicy flavorful burger. Homemade bun is an added plus. And the cinnamon rolls are incredible. I recommend topping it with Amys Cinnamon Pecan Honey ice cream. It is a one two punch to send your tastebuds in orbit. Saw some recent negative reviews. I have no clue why as the food was great. I have eaten many burger places. They are a top ten to me. Great job. Thanks for making my birthday special with great food and service.
