Having lived in San Antonio for four years now, Im almost ashamed to admit that Ive only recently visited Mixtli even more ashamed after my experience. Mixtli is tucked away in a quiet corner of Southtown, with its own (metered) parking. Finding the restaurant was easy enough, and parking is charged at the average rate of other San Antonio lots. I was given a warm, friendly welcome when I entered and led past the open kitchen to their sunken bar area to enjoy a welcome cocktail. I started with my tester cocktail: a classic gin Rickey. It was made perfectly, something that may seem more common than it really is. Chef Rico Torres welcomed me to his Mexican omakase-style home with a smoked oyster and broke down the current menu as it rotates seasonally. I tried my hardest to focus on his lesson, but the earthy flavor of the corn butter and fermented charanda-tepache mixture, melded with the smoke, sent my eyes rolling to the back of my skull. I gathered myself in time to be led back into the main dining room to begin my journey to the Tierra Caliente. This menu focused on the regional cuisine from Guerrero to Michoacan on Mexicos Pacific side. Each course was presented by a different staff member, which is something I appreciate as a chef and former restaurant staff member. It allows the entire cast to interact with a diner, allowing the patrons to appreciate how many people work to provide such a delightful experience. The next course was a sopa de agúcate, which was creamy and served alongside a leg of crab. Subsequent courses were the corunda a white corn cake with a layer of koji jocoque (essentially a Mexican fermented dairy product similar to kefir), mole rosa (roasted beets with smoked hibiscus, and pomegranate) served on a tortilla to be consumed taco-style, pasta de rancho (a tortellini-esque, lemon, and requezon-filled pasta sat atop a tomato sauce), beef tongue braised until tender and served over plantain pave (layered cake) and a dollop of peanut mole, the mole de cafe was a succulent, brined boneless pork chop served with a sweet-tart apple slaw. Halfway through the meal, I ordered the Mixtli margarita, which has to rank in my top five favorite cocktails worldwide. The salted orange foam lives in my head rent-free for life. I also added the coffee service, which included a café de olla, which was exceptionally presented and easily served two people. My intermezzo was a palate-cleansing sorbet with a mirepoix of crunchy and vibrant fruits and jicama. The final course was a caramelized milk ice cream served atop popped sorghum alongside a hazelnut pirouette. Between the engaged, attentive staff, the ambiance (the quietest open kitchen Ive ever experienced), the culinary ingenuity of the chefs, and the cutlery and dishes, I cant recommend Mixtli enough. They are developing and showcasing true culinary art, which is in short supply in San Antonio.

We are in Texas for a week and a half for a conference and have been trying the best food Austin and San Antonio have to offer. This has easily been the best restaurant and best tasting menu we have tried. Great food, drinks, and service. Would highly recommend. Only place we have tried in Texas so far that seems worthy of a Michelin star and we hope they get one later this year.

Literally a dinner experience I will never forget. We did the chefs tasting menu with the cocktail pairing and wow. All of the food and drinks were divine, even food and drinks we dont usually care for! Our waitress was excellent (Eve) and each person that created the drink or dish came out and told you the story of it all. Such an awesome journey to go on with the meal! I would absolutely come back here again and recommend it to anyone!

From the Smoked oysters and cocktails in the bar as the first course in their Summer 4 course menu, through the cold Avocado soup with Butter poached crab, then to the Lengua and plantain pave and the Pork chop with mole, and on to the beautiful Butterfly dessert, literally everything was spectacular! I recommend the reserve wine pairing! We cant wait to go back!

One of the best meals weve had anywhere in the world. The entire menu was off the charts, everything perfectly balanced and seasoned without a single element overpowering the other. Will definitely be back. Pricy, but unlike a LOT of the up scale scene in San Antonio, its entirely worth the price tag. Service, the kitchens cleanliness, everything was spot on. The cocktails are to die for, if you havent chosen the wine pairing, the cocktails are fantastic. (We tried margaritas, punch, some of their seasonal ones, everything was outrageously good).

Beyond being the most delicious restaurant in San Antonio, I believe that this is the most important restaurant in San Antonio. San Antonio has a beautiful history of amazing cuisine, and Mixtli has been at the forefront ever since they opened. From the thoughtfulness that goes into creating every special menu that ties into different regions of Mexico, to the friendliness and sheer talent/creativity of the most incredible chefs in south Texas, Mixtli has the special ability to transform plates of beautifully presented ingredients into a once in a lifetime experience that cannot be missed. What a special restaurant.

My review is for the cellar wine shop attached to mixtli. I have not yet had the pleasure of dinning at mixtli (a mistake I shall correct soon). The wine shop on site is literally the best one in town and Im obsessed with how well Hailey does with her recommendations. Seriously, all you have to tell her is the mood and price point youre after and she will hit it out the park. Every single time. Her knowledge is outstanding and I love how she shares the story behind the wine when you stop in. I am now unable to go anywhere else for wine and Im honestly not mad about it at all. San Antonio needs more places like this in town!!

My wife and I were absolutely blown away by our experience. Weve gone to several James Beard awarded restaurants and a Michelin awarded place in Miami, but this feels like it stands above them all. The food was fantastic, unique and balanced. The seasonal menu was Mexico x Japan fusion which did a beautiful job of incorporated each into every dish. The service is informative and friendly. We loved it! The care and service were above our expectations. Yes, its expensive and will take up the majority of your evening, but its well worth it. Highly recommend!

Omg this is now one of my favorite spots in San Antonio. I sat at the bar and not at a table in the restaurant. Food options are limited at the bar but they still have a few options. One option is a wagyu beef sushi. OMG it s delightful and meaty - very meaty. Definitely order that! Also, every single drink on their menu is fabulous and beautiful. I m obsessed with the Mixtlilada (salty/savory) and the clear margarita. Be sure to order them both. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Laura and Ryan are awesome bartenders. Excellent from start to finish. I ve gone to several tasting menus now and have thoroughly enjoyed some interesting flavors but none were quite like Mixtil. Their Japanese x Mexico menu is unique and filled with master level culinary techniques. If you like Sake you ll like the wine pairing with the different courses for the evening. If I did that part again I think I would stick to their cocktail menu with the exception of one particular sake that is a must try (Sparkling Rosè). Their Smoked Old fashioned done with Tequila and Mezcal with a Mole was particularly excellent as well. For the different courses I found that the wagyu was my favorite, it wasn t overly steak like and was done with a blue corn tortilla and a really nice pepper sauce that gave just the right amount of heat. The desserts and coffee service is a must as well. If you like seafood and you want to be adventurous the Japanese x Mexico menu is for you. I will definitely be back for other menus because their techniques, presentation, and service were absolutely wonderful. Parking: There are plenty of spots in the paid parking lot. The actual restaurant is hard to find because signage is minimalistic. But if you see pharmtable go into that parking lot. They validate the first 90 minutes so bring in your parking ticket.

NOT RECOMENDING! PLS READ TO KNOW WHY. We are high end restaurant industry dinners and have blogs. This was not our first time paying several hundred dollars for a tasting menu. By far, we were disappointed by the food, staff, and the speed and quality of the service. The story behind the restaurant and the approach to the menu are much more intriguing than the delivery of them in practice. For 2 hrs and 45 min, we received 7 courses and a messed up drink order while bored out of our minds sitting there. Staff forgot about a food allergy despite writing it in the reservation notes. They had to swap the order of the tasting deliveries due to not being prepared in a timely fashion. NOT RECOMMENDING THIS RESTAURANT. SPEND YOUR MONEY AT ANOTHER FIVE $ RESTAURANT.

I recently visited the Mixtli restaurant and was delighted with the original presentation of dishes. The atmosphere of the establishment is very cozy, and the friendly staff does their job quickly and efficiently. The menu offers a variety of Mexican dishes, which were all very tasty. Each dish is simply a masterpiece! The prices are slightly above average, however, the quality of the food and the level of service fully justify the cost. THE place in San Antonio for an unforgettable culinary experience. Their current menu 1879- The Present , which just debuted for Hispanic Heritage Month, features recipes from the famous UTSA Libraries Cookbook collections. Each of the 10 courses of the menu were beautifully explained by our waiter, and perfectly paired by their sommelier. My favorite four courses were the Farm Egg, the Xoconostle aguachile, The braised beef check with Tamarind Mole and the Frenched Rack of Lamb. Having gone to many michellin star restaurants, Mixtli surpasses many of them. If this was located in New York they would definitely receive a star. We came for a transition menu of Guatemalan cuisine and learned quite a bit from the dishes. From the Korean influence and use of vegetables, every dish was a hit. A rarity where there is usually one dish where the chef is a little too avant garde, but Mixtli knows how to prepare a tasting menu. Ill definitely come back on my next trip to San Antonio. Top 5 meals ever and my partners best meal!

I decided to take my husband to a nice restaurant for his birthday. I had to book in advance and paid a non-refundable total price of over $400 for a 10 course meal for 2 people. I was very excited to try this place since my coworker said he had a good experience. This is a Mexican restaurant and they change themes often. The date that I had booked, the restaurant decided to try something out and do a Guatemala theme. I have never tried Guatemalan food before so I was excited to try something new. The ambiance and server were nice. However, each meal was bland and portions were very small consisting of mainly vegetables. We honestly thought it was a scam because the dishes were made of basic ingredients but glorified as authentic and fine dining cuisine. Although we respect the authenticity attempt, but the lack of protein meat/seafood in the menu were unacceptable. We consistently got vegetable/salad course meals one after the other until close to the 7th course I had to ask if we will have something that has meat. One of the course is a jade theme made by smashed chick peas that were very salty and the green sauce was super sour. This dish was so unbalanced that I couldn t get past the second bite. The 9th meal consists of thin turkey slices covered with tomato sauce which was passable but not worth the money. The 10th meal had 2 pieces of ribs in gochujang sauce in which the cook explained were influenced by Korean immigrants in Guatemala. To be honest, the ribs were very dry and the flavors were bland. Afterwards, they gave us vanilla ice cream with chocolate in the shape of an Aztec coin. The ice cream was good but did not amaze me much. I gave each dish a try but none of the dishes stood out to me. I also felt like the order of the meal was not balanced with an overwhelming portion to be salads. The service is nice but I felt like the food was not worth the money. We left the restaurant still feeling hungry. I expect consistently good food if I pay $400 for 2 people. Would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

Im not really interested in bringing down a business by posting a bad review, but I do want to be honest about my experience. I will initially say that the service was absolutely amazing. The waitress and food came out in a timely manner without being overbearing. I absolutely loved each explanation of each dish, and the people made the environment quite lively. I loved the hostess, the waitress, and all of the chefs. I opted for the 10 course experience, which I dont regret but I did expect a little bit more. I dont really call myself picky per se, but there were some dishes that just didnt do it for me (I didnt feel like mentioning it to the waitresses as they wouldve fixed it, but I just wanted a good night). Since this menu is based on the history of Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, its immigration and ideas of religious prosecution, etc etc, the menu is quite vegetable heavy. I read one other review mentioning that, but experiencing it really put in that it was super vegetable heavy. Thats more of my fault, as its meant to be that way. The cabbage rolls were delicious, and suprisingly the tortillas and pecan butter was memorable! My biggest gripe however was the chicken and steak that was served that came with our 10 course. I was quite disappointed that the chicken with Adobo seasoning and pumpkin mole was so salty! It was almost, quite literally almost unbearable. It was just the chicken, and you get a small piece of it, but it was like a spoon of salt. I really dont think Im picky but man I just didnt expect that. We also got the steak as well, and I was disappointed that about half of the steak was at a well done, so it came out quite tough. Im glad the dessert made up everything we just experienced, it was so so so good. I really dont mean to bring anyone down, but for the price tag of this place and to be fair, it was my partys first time experiencing a meal like this, I was really hoping for the meats to be executed differently than what I experienced. The other dishes have been pretty good, and I loved the people! This was a great one time experience, and I do hope this comes out as constructive criticism and not anything dramatic. Thanks again for a good night!

There are lots of 5* reviews for Mixtli. However, if you are accustomed to eating at Michelin restaurants Mixtli unfortunately falls short. 10 Course Menu vs. no Amuse Bouche? Ambitious and original menu that requires an immense amount of effort vs. does it actually taste better than the traditional dish? Food that is technically executed to perfection vs. why is there so much salt? Perfectly-cooked Duck Confit oversalted. Perfectly-cooked Beef Tongue oversalted. Salt flakes on the Tamal. Salty squash. Salty beans. Complex flavors vs. the balance between them is off. Why include all those flavor profiles when the coconut overpowers everything? Clove here. Clove there. If mole is the highlight then make it the star of the course. Lots of beautiful plating vs. essentially the same-brand silverware on everything. And it s placed without any table linen. Server carefully corrects plating with tweezers and then holds the tips of the tweezers with bare fingers. I took the time to write this for one reason: Mixtli could be Michelin * quality. However, some glaring missteps (esp. flavor balance) makes me wonder. We want you to get to that level (even if there is no Michelin rating in this area). 5* for the concept and effort behind the dishes. 3.5* for the food. Best dish of the night? The vanilla/goat-cheese salad. 2nd best? The souffle/pear ice cream. And actually, the unintentional hickory smoke wafting from a neighbor s table elevated the souffle.

The food was good, but a bit overpriced. I ve done various tasting menus and this one was fine. It s good for an intimate experience. My other gripe: I wish the storytelling would ve done justice to indigenous Mexican groups whose food inspired the menu. Felt like a bunch of praise for Europeans. Was not expecting that.

What an amazing experience. Possibly the finest cuisine Ive ever enjoyed, and easily the most memorable dining experience Ive ever enjoyed. We did the 10 course tasting menu and were truly blown away by every course. The chef and his clearly very passionate staff told a rich and intriguing story of the history of Mexican cuisine with fascinating introductions at the service of every course. It may seem like a lot to spend on a meal, but it was worth every penny. I will look for any occasion I can find to return again and again.

My wife and I love dining experiences We use the Michelin guide as check list of restaurants that we must try. While we lived in NYC, we hit every restaurant that made every best of list and we were often found at the James Beard house. We will plan our vacations around the next restaurant and/or chef we must try. Given our experience, I went into Mixtli the first time with my nose in the air and not expecting much. I was completely wrong. The food is amazing. The tastes are unique. The presentation is a work of art. I have now been twice and the second time was just as sublime as the first. While it is a bit expensive for a simple Friday night dinner and might be better for a special occasion, it is worth every penny.

Mixtli is a culinary experience like no other. Chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres, together with Melissa Valenzuela delve into pre-Hispanic plates, flavors, and processes to deliver a meticulous experience to excite your senses with each one of the offerings, giving us a glimpse into the culture and the society of this continent, hundreds of years ago. Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite restaurants in the United States. Our big surprise was to find out that the Hoja Santa in the menu comes from a clipping given to Rico Torres many years ago by Dr. Ellen Riojas Clark. The birthday celebration for Rosie Salcido was, indeed, unforgettable because of all the cariño and the passion infused into each of the culinary masterpieces at Mixtli.

Fine dining with a casual flair. Tasting menu style dining sounds bougie but the place evokes comfort and chill vibes. But please do dress up a bit to show some respect. $$$ but completely worth every cent. Menu changes every 3-4 months? Currently menu takes inspiration from the Yucatan cuisine and how it was influenced by its trading partners from the middle to far east. Reservations are must through a ticket purchased via link on their website. So yes you prepay, wine pairing and coffee service extra. Gratuities will be included. They have a seperate bar where you can chill while waiting for your table. Their house cocktails are definitely an experience in itself. Go now.

Two words to describe the food: flawless execution. Maybe the flavor profiles are foreign or Ill-favored to you, but it would be impossible to deny that the team at Mixtli has a vision for your meal and can deliver. The service is impeccable and on par with my experiences in 2 and 3 Michelin starred restaurants. From water and beverage service to a clean, folded napkin waiting for you upon return from the bathrooms (which are impeccable and a somewhat atmospheric experience on their own) I wasn t left wanting for anything. Service was paced at an elite level. I was never waiting for food or drink, instead it was delivered as if the chef were reading our minds. As for the menu: I enjoyed each course very much for what it was. Even regarding the few items that I wouldn t personally want again, (Dragonfruit sorbet, and the Mixtli old fashioned) the quality and care taken in their preparation was obvious and much appreciated. The wine pairing was absolutely worth the cost, five generous pours of exceptional wine - and the pairings actually worked extremely well - a rarity in todays era of the streamlined prie-fixe menus. My wife and I especially enjoyed the lime soup and it s accompanying wine. The atmosphere is a wonderful combination of a contemporary dining room and a lovely homage to their boxcar roots with the open concept. Every course is introduced by a chef de partie, and the stories added to our enjoyment and understanding of the meal. Rare for me was the fact that the desert, a pavlova-type dish, was the highlight. It was an incredible combination of flavors and textures, as well as a reflection of the Amuse-Bouche and indeed the entire meal. We previously dined with Mixtli five years ago for a Game of Thrones Theme Dinner. At that point we considered them to be one of the best in San Antonio. In that time the growth and talent of these chefs is clear and it makes me extremely happy not only to have enjoyed one of the best meals of my life, but also that I can look forward to their cutting-edge, adventurous, and fun cuisine again in the future.

My wife and I came to Mixtli today and we can say without hesitation, this is one of the best restaurants in the country. The service is at a class of its own. The food was not just incredibly delicious but also beyond creative. The fact that they are able to change their menu based not just on geographical region in Mexico but also travel to different time periods in Mexican history and remain true to that period and region is really amazing. Every dish was carefully thought out and each had its delicious uniqueness, but tonight the dessert, Boule de Neige by Chef Sofia Tejeda took the #1 spot. Hands down the best dessert I have ever had in my life and I have travelled and been to some of the best restaurants in the US. This place is an experience worth a detour.

Our favorite restaurant experiences in our lifetime have been the masterful Peruvian cuisine at Astrid and Gaston, the Euro Chilean delight of Borago , and Mallmann s meat-tastic 1884 experience (Sorry Europe, South America was consistently better tasting and friendlier) After three visits, Mixtli has been consistently equal to these experiences in terms of creativity, quality, personality and service. We are very thankful to have this experience at home in San Antonio. The chefs behind the scene have incredible talent and I am sure they are going to reach greater recognition in the years to come. Ive been a fan and evangelist of Chefs Rico and Diegos work since the 12 seat boxcar days. I think they are the best chefs in San Antonio and each menu rotation has really proved this out. The thought and care they take into their food and the place and history it embodies is outstanding. The passion here is palpable and after a visit you can clearly see that this food is as delicious as it is artistic. I think writing about specific food experiences here wouldnt be fair to the spirit of the restaurant; its a journey, its a delight, its a surprise! So... No spoilers. But this is a restaurant that feels uniquely at home in San Antonio and makes me proud to live in a city with such culinary artists. Book and try it for yourself!

I was extremely excited when I heard that Mixtli was going to be opening a bar. I have been to multiple dinners at their original location, including their GOT editions, which were all amazing and deserve 10 stars, however, I was expecting the same type of service at their bar. My girl friend and I were the first two customers when they opened at 5 o clock, we were greeted by a very rude bartender that said we could sit wherever we wanted by waving her hand. When I asked what she recommended she was very irritated and didn t give us any information on any of the drinks or bites, simply stated one of the ones that won t be on the menu long, then made me ask which ones those were. She was obviously very frustrated and we were the only two people there; as the very small area got more crowded you could literally see the fumes coming off of her. I hope that she doesn t act this way to customers on a regular basis and hope for their sake that she was simply having a bad day, unfortunately I won t be returning to take the chance that she has another.

Utterly unimpressed and would not recommend for the reasons below For starters, the immaculate cocktails a shot of tequila with blackberry soda and a black seaweed salt - tasted like a briny oyster. Second, the food. 1st dish: a potato bread with a coffee butter - tasted like coffee grounds 2nd dish: corn soup with a sea weed foam - again tasted like a briny oyster with corn grounds 3rd dish - hibiscus Mahi Mahi aguachile - can t complain wasn t bad but fishy after taste 4th dish: shrimp mole - things really started to dart south to Satan - it was cornmeal with ground shrimp covered in a shrimp mole - shrimp mole? Are you kidding.. shrimp on shrimp = shrimp. Awful. 5th dish: Mexican crawfish on a maíz tortilla - nothing about crawfish is Mexican (A) and also, I may now be septic (B) 6th dish: conceded and walked out

We dined at Mixtli with another couple on 10/29/21, and we all agreed it was an unforgettable experience. The ten-course tasting menu took us through a culinary tour of the Chiapas region of southern Mexico. One of the restaurant s co-owners spent time explaining their philosophy and some of the history of the region. Then, each course was presented with a brief explanation of the ingredients and its place in the region s history. Of course, with four people who have varying tastes, and ten courses of various flavors, not every dish was a home run with every diner. But overall, we all agreed that the evening was time well-spent, and we are planning to return early next year to see what region Mixtli focuses on next. The restaurant is rather small and can get a bit loud, which make it hard to hear and understand some of the explanations of the dishes. If we had one suggest or the owners it would be to provide a printed program or description of each dish and its origins and significance to the area from which it comes. We would love to look back and do more research to understand what we enjoyed on our serving dishes. If your not familiar with the area, Mixtli can be difficult to locate, because the signage is small and easy to miss. If you re driving, I suggest looking for the paid public parking (the restaurant validates) on South Presa St and the restaurant is a very short walk north of that parking area.
