I have lived in the area for 17 years but have never managed to make it to Salt Lick in Round Rock. In short, the experience was not what I had expected. We sat on the patio on a warm but comfortable September evening. We had to send two of our drinks back because they just didnt taste good - and we are not particularly picky about drinks. The brisket was decent and the ribs were very good. Sausage was also good. The sides were decent, but not excellent. Our server didnt seem to care too much about servicing our table. We had to remind him three or four times for various things he was supposed to bring over. Kind of felt like we were caring for ourselves more than he was. Given the range of available barbecue experiences in the Austin area, I will spend my money and time somewhere else next time.

Trying out The Salt Lick when visiting Austin is a MUST. The original location in Driftwood is pretty remote and far away from the rest of Austin, whereas this location in Round Rock is much more accessible. Its not quite as big as the original location, but they serve all the same food. Normally when I go, we get the all-you-can-eat family style meal which costs $32.95/adult. It includes brisket, sausage, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, and beans. Of these items, our faves are the sausage and the pork ribs. You have to use their SPICY bbq sauce when you eat the meats. Its one of my favorite bbq sauces of all time. Its a nice blend of tangy, sweet, and hot, and pairs well with ALL of their meats. As for the brisket, its not my personal favorite as there is so much competition in the brisket space there in Austin. But definitely go for the sausage and pork ribs, and be sure to leave space for some pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on top for dessert. Absolutely delicious! Lots of parking at this location in Round Rock too. Be sure to take a bottle of their spicy bbq sauce home with you. I always take it back to California with me.

We went here to meet friends. On Google it lists this BBQ as $$ - $$$ and I would agree this is on the higher end. I ordered the Brisket and Bisen Ribs. Now Im sure it said Brisket and Ribs but I received 3 strips of brisket and 1 rib. YEP one rib, so Im not even sure what Bisen ribs taste like as it was not the fastest rib and at $29.95 a little pricey. Plate looks full with potatoe and coleslaw. Added a nice Korean larger though and some sweet potatoes fries. But taking all meals into consideration Food 3 Atmosphere 4 Price 3. More reviews on social media #realtysharpe

Good place for BBQ, but not great. Its a big space and we got right in on a Friday evening. Our server was busy, but stayed on top of everything and was efficient. We had the beef rib/bison rib plate along with 1/2 lb of the fattier side of the brisket. Ribs had good flavor, the bison is a little chewier than the beef and both were juicy enough. The brisket was the star. Its definitely worth a visit. The bread is a nice change from white slices you get at most BBQ joints. We were disappointed with the sides though. Baked beans, potato salad and coleslaw were all just okay. Each lacked flavor in a different way. If you go, try different sides and definitely get the fattier side of the brisket.

The sausage wasnt it just had no flavor. And why is Big Red soda special and the only one thats not refillable.

So this was mine & the wife s 1st time to salt lick. We came to spend time with the daughter for her birthday. Her and our son in law decided we would give this place a try since none of us had ever been to one and heard it was good BBQ. Well sad to say, not so good or satisfying as we thought it would be. The HEB has way better BBQ than what we had ordered. The brisket was tough not tender (dry), it had no seasoning and tasted more like dry pot roast. The turkey & sausage were pretty good. Beans, coleslaw & potato salad, Horrible! It had No flavor and needed something. The seats could ve been cleaned off properly, I was cleaning rice or smashed corn off the seats. The positives I do have to say is the waiter was awesome & atmosphere was good. Before anyone says there s a difference between the flat and point I know that. Even the flat isn t that dry and if the brisket is smoked properly you should be able to pull it apart with your fingers. I had to use a knife to cut a piece off. Anyways it ll probably be the last salt lick I give a try. Parking: Plenty of parking Kid-friendliness: Has a small playground outside for the little ones while you wait for tasteless food. Wheelchair accessibility: Has a ramp access to the front entrance.

So went here to give it a try.We have heard good things of this joint..Let Me start off it SUCKS Plain and simple. If I could give no stars thats what this place would get. The most worse BBQ I have ever ate. First off they discontinued their baby back ribs. OK for the meal now. The beans no good Ive had better out of a can. The sauce had a off odd taste to it. The potato salad I dont even know where to start with this item. Do yall really think that is potato salad gawd how bad. The sausage grease as all get out and taste was terrible. The brisket was so so way super grease. The pork ribs was tough and flavor was not great either and we only chose the pork ribs, cause guess what? Yes they was out if beef ribs.. I havent tried the peach cobbler yet. But if its like the 100 dollars of junk we received it will go where that is going straight to the trash can...So very disappointing. I usually give a place a second and perhaps even a third chance if one item is bad or something to that effect. But the whole meal? NEVER EVER WILL I RETURN TO THIS PLACE..WOW....

If you have no taste buds or never had real bbq before in your life, this is a place to be. I will NEVER go back to this place again. It s the most NASTIEST FOOD I have ever eaten! From the saggy coleslaw which is shredded lettuce with some gross oil sauce, then you have some odd potatoes mashed up and called that potato salad? No salad is in the potatoes.. nothing but massed up potatoes. Then the beans, just yuck! No flavor at all. I wondered why they gave us salt and pepper at the table, because they don t season their food! Then the pork ribs, they had a chemical flavor to them and the brisket was dry and flavorless. Then we have the bbq sauce, it was like a honey mustard flavor kinda what you d use for pulled pork but not for general bbq lovers. This was just a waste of money and a sad tale to add to my trip in Austin. Don t waste your money or taste buds at this place, if you actually like bbq!

Salt lick is one of the better bbq places in the area albeit a bit more touristy than some. If you are looking for a good meal before a game at Dell Diamond or an alternative to the high priced food at Kalahari, then this is a good stop. One word Brisket. They have an all you can eat option which is more of a novelty than practical but if you are getting your one time fill of bbq and not going on a plane the next day then maybe that works. Dont love their sides but their meat is great. Perfect for bringing out of town guests to, although their original location south of Austin is better.

I live in Dallas and I keep hearing about Salt Lick being the best bbq in the State so being here for work I finally had the chance to try it. In my honest opinion this is basic to mid tier BBQ for Texas. I had a two meat plate ribs and brisket. The ribs had a texture and look as if they were boiled before they were placed on the smoker. What leads me to believe that is that there was a light smoke ring but a grayish appearance at the core. There also was not a deep smoke to the bone. The brisket was tender but also lacked the depth of flavor for me to consider this a top tier bbq location. The sides were also pretty standard potato salad, beans, and cole slaw. Its not bad but its not great. I would go back if offered but I wouldnt have high expectations.

Bottom line - food is so-so, pretty expensive, service is good and atmosphere is great. It s not amazing food but you ll enjoy yourself. Good: service and atmosphere are great. Pork ribs are surprisingly good. Sausage is good but that s hard to mess up at any BBQ place. It s a different style of Cole claw than most Texas restaurants but it s light and fresh. Delcious cobbler. Bad: The standard of any Texas BBQ place is how well they do brisket. This brisket was just not good. No smoke ring or smoky flavor at all, no bark. Tender but tasteless and demanded lots of BBQ sauce. Beans were not very good. And price was really high.

We use to come here often in passing. We are out of towners. This visit I was very disappointed. Was seated and asked to move to another server and table because the first one got drinks and then acted like I was an inconvenience. Our new server was better. Got our food. My order was messed up but the server did fix it. Took one bite of my Peach Cobbler to pull a long black hair out of my throat and mouth. Totally made me feel sick. Took it to our server and she offered another cobbler (I said Heavens no Thank you.) She comped it. Did not help I had to take my food to go because I felt nauseous from the hair. We got no refills and we were really not checked up on. I still tipped $20. But the friends I had referred...I told themy experience. Word of mouth is everything when it comes to service. Please do better. Have your staff be friendly and take better care of guests. And your Hostesses were rude.

Had some Texas BBQ for dinner tonight. As much as I wanted to indulge in the all you can eat family style, I didn t want to be miserable. I ordered the pulled pork combo which came with another meat choice and I did the pork ribs. My wife ordered the Thurman s Choice which came with brisket, pork ribs and sausage. The brisket had three options; lean, moist or burnt ends .we went with burnt ends. All plates came with coleslaw, potato salad and beans. The meat was soooo flavorful and delicious BUT the star of the show was the burnt ends it was literally meat candy. The bark on it was absolutely perfect and sweet. The meat literally melted in your mouth. When it came to the sides, the potato salad was like a steakhouse potato salad. The beans had the creaminess of the beans in red beans and rice. There wasn t any sweetness to the beans. They were good though felt like a cowboy out on the range eatin my beans. The coleslaw was not creamy and didnt have a vinegar base. Whatever dressing they had on it, was extremely light .hard to describe unfortunately. The macaroni was good, but was similar to a macaroni you would get at a buffet, not much pizzazz and blah. Overall, treat yourself if you re in the area specifically for the burnt ends. You will not be disappointed. Follow us on Instagram @gbdiningdykes

Came in this evening for dinner. Wait was about 20 minutes. Not bad at all. Waitress was nice and attended to us quickly. Now, onto the not so good things. 1st they were out of turkey. No biggie, it was the evening so it was understandable. We ordered fries and sweet potato fries. Both were brought out WAY before the food. They were ice cold by the time the meats came. Brisket was tough (not cooked long enough) and they cut very thick slices. You can tell they were just hacking away at it because each piece was a different shape. The flavor was Meh. Coppers & Rudys are 10x better. The ribs were decent. Not sure if it was bad timing or what, but for the amount of money spent... not sure Id be back. Let me add we ended up having to leave so we had our waiter change our order togo. Management should take more pride into what is being served instead of sending out bad quality meats.

Very disappointed. The staff were very friendly and generous and the atmosphere was family fun. The pit when you come in was awesome. If you want meat that s the place. We didn t try the Mac and cheese.

Bland bbq and just not my Thang. I respect salt lick for their name but I dont like it personally because of how dry it was. I hade the brisket sandwich which should be a softball.

I have to take a star off. Even though the food is poor phenomenal. The substitution policy is stupid. Why make it hard for a customer to spend money? I wanted to sub in a less expensive item.

Always have heard of salt lick as a Texas BBQ institution. Walking up the smell of wood was a welcome and usually a good sign. My wife told me to get the buffet as could share with the kids. They had brisket, sausage, and pork ribs (st Louis). You also get beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. Well Its buffet BBQ. The meat was okay and a mustard base sauce. Nothing to write home about, but with Southside market nearb it will be a hard sell next time Im in town. They have ranch style beans which are OK. The potato salad probably not what you think of usually. More of a mash with a little mustard and onion, worth a try. And well the coleslaw is coleslaw. The atmosphere is typical bbq fare. Wooden bench seats and a couple metal line stars on the wall. Service was great as they bring everything out to you quickly and with a smile. With a hungry toddler she didnt wait long before she got a taste. Also real Crayola in the menu was awesome. The drinks never hit bottom and was able to check out quickly. The major appeal is the location. Across from a baseball stadium and kalahari resort. Price was reasonable for a BBQ place especially with how prices keep surging upward. Kid-friendliness: Crayola crayon kit, milk available, high chair available

I cant say enough good things about Salt Lick BBQ - its hands down my number one spot for BBQ! The mouthwatering flavors, the cozy atmosphere, and the friendly staff make every visit a delight. All you can eat is the way to go! What sets Salt Lick apart for me is their incredible spice BBQ sauce. It takes their already delicious BBQ to a whole new level of flavor. Whether youre a BBQ aficionado or just looking for a fantastic meal, Salt Lick BBQ is the place to be. I highly recommend trying their spice BBQ sauce - its a game-changer!

5/29/24 Went in for lunch for my husband s birthday. John was our server. We have been eating at Salt Lick for almost 40 years and John is THE BEST server we ve ever had! He s friendly, professional, very smart and an intuitive server. He frequently checked on us and immediately came back with refills of food and water. If you re at this location, ask for John. You won t be disappointed! Yes, and the food was fabulous, as always! Without a doubt, the best barbecue in Austin! EVERY dish is freshly made and phenomenally DELICIOUS! We always order the all you can eat which includes; brisket, ribs, sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, fresh soft bread, pickles & onions. The barbecue sauce is on the table so you can add as much as you want. My favorite is the spicy version! You will not leave here hungry! They have incredibly great pit bosses who consistently serve up 100% perfectly cooked meats!!! EVERYthing is INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS! Parking: Plenty of parking. However, The Dell Diamond (baseball) is literally RIGHT NEXT DOOR. So, game days are crazy busy at Salt Lick!

The service is always quick, even when theyre busy. BBQ is my favorite so I have pretty high standards, and this is the best Ive had. Top notch brisket for sure. Hubby and I usually split the Thurman plate and order a little extra of whatever were in the mood for. Not on the menu - the chicken strips! Get get some for the table. And dont skip the mac and cheese or pecan pie either way it comes - sooooo good!

Everything about my experience here was incredible! The service was above and beyond, I should ve asked for the gentleman s name, but he was so helpful and attentive. For the food the food! Everything we had was delicious. The only exception would be the beef ribs, you can skip those, but do not skip the brisket or the Turkey. Never thought I d say that about Turkey but, man alive! That s some great meat. The sides are delicious too and the macaroni with the brisket just may take you out, but at least you d die happy. Grab the peach cobbler to round out the salty meal and sooth your soul. Incredible.

I had the brisket and sausage plate and although the food was edible, it was not great. The brisket was dry and had no smoke ring or dark crust, unlike the photo you on their website. It was bland. The sausage was mediocre, it taste like something I get at the grocery store, also no smoke flavor.

Unfortunately, I recommend The Salt Lick to my family from out of town. They did not have a good experience. They said that it was cold and tasted like it was leftover from a few days ago. The potato salad was shady I felt bad that they had a bad experience. Plenty of other Texas BBQ to recommend next time they are in town.
