The I-20 Wildlife Preserve & Jenna Welch Nature Study Center

About the Company

rating: 4.6

The I20 Wildlife Preserve is a 100-acre upland forest campus in Midland, Texas. It is a wild space – not a park – managed by a nonprofit organization. The 86-acre urban playa lake is the highlight of the wetlands, floodplain thickets, and prairie grasslands – providing abundant avian, wildlife, and aquatic habitat. As one of the few urban playas protected in its natural state, the preserve is a treasured ecotourism destination of regional significance and a scientific-educational resource of the Permian Basin.

Nice place. You can see that they have tried to do maintenance but instead of clearing the junk the cut down they pile it. While some of these may be needed for wildlife the rest are just ugly. Branches across walking trail need to be cut back so you can walk with out getting a stick in eye. Saw some wildlife but its dry we need rain. Rain will help this place. Says to sign in but no sign in sheet.

not there fault but tons of construction going on around so GPS rerouted me 1-2x adding additional 10-15 min drive time. No dogs is super lame, especially for responsible pet owners. What about service animals? some shaded parts to trail, a must in hot Midland

Using my trails app, I see there use to be a lake that the path went around. But no water now. Just flowers, weeds, grass. So using the various bird blinds did not help see anything. The trail is nice with dirt or boardwalk. I did see a few birds, lizards, and butterflys. The trail is a complete circle. 1.5 mile trail. Look for verdins inthe trees between entrance and trail fork area.

It is beautiful and so incredibly lovely to have a spot dedicated to nature. The pathways are very enjoyable to walk on, and there are lookouts along the way so you can spy on birds. We did encounter a snake on the pathway, but it did not attack as we walked by (see if you can spot it in my photos). They are more afraid of us than we are of them lol just repeat that mantra and hope it s true if you encounter the same. Or run the opposite direction, the choice is yours. My only main complaint is that it s so close to the highway that the sounds ruin the atmosphere a bit. It s not as fun to enjoy nature when the rumbling vehicles remind you that we are slowly destroying our air quality.

There use to be so much life here. The water was always full even in the hot, seems like they took the water out and all the critters frogs, crabs, possums, wild cats etc have vanished, I dont see how that much water just dries up in such a short period of time. None the less its still a good spot to walk and discover.

A glimpse of nature in the middle of an otherwise barren city. Ignore the negativity; some people go and are disappointed because they are expecting a park or a zoo. This isnt that. It is a naturally occurring space that is essential for local wildlife and migrating birds. It is also a research center. This space is a preserve for the animals and plants who make their home there. Sometimes it is green and wet, other times it is dry and brown, it is completely dependent upon the weather and season. It is not manicured. It is nature. I like to go once a season (minus summer), because the look changes dramatically. Late spring is best when wildflowers pop up, fall is lovely because there is some leaf color changes in the back wooded area, and the monarchs stop by as they fly further south. Winter has its own beauty on a crisp sunny day. If you are an early riser (Im not) Im sure summer has its own rewards early in the day.

Absolutely wonderful experience, trees and shrubs were mostly dormant due to the season, but nature in its natural state is beautiful year round. So quiet and calming, stress levels gone at the gate, so much to see. Can walk for hours and enjoy the fresh air and get much needed exercise, great place for elderly as well as children. cant believe this is in midland and free, unlike any trails built by the city. I live across Ulmer park, no trails, just thorns... thank you for creating this great place and sharing it! Isabel R.

WHAT AN AMAZING WILDLIFE PRESERVE! This place is amazing for a nice walk with family, friends or even by yourself. The loop around the preserve is about 1.45 miles long with a few turn outs into heavily wooded areas or views of the lake. I called before coming in to ask if I was able to jog and they said their guidelines were to be courteous to others walking on the trails. When you enter drive down the dirt rocky road until you see gates, keep going straight ahead and enter the round about and park anywhere. When you enter the gates there s directions around the preserve but for my first time I went off google maps to see where I was around the park to not get lost. About 70% of the trails are shaded and the rest are exposed to the sun. Place has some bridges to have a epic scenery of the entire preserve, Enjoy your walk and take some water. Place accepts donations.

This nature preserve in the middle of West Texas is a gem! I am so glad that I found this place. The trails are relatively kept up and there s plenty of plenty of shade throughout the ~1.5 mile trail. I saw a bobcat, some bunnies, rats, dragonflies, and so much more. I came here to try to get some miles in on a trail vs road. I will say there s not a lot of elevation so it s a relatively easy run/walk. Throughout the park there are multiple stations you can stop at and enjoy different views. I also met the supervisor, Mr. Rangel, who keeps up the preserve. He was very kind and we shared a great conversation.

I didnt see much of anything, maybe the wrong time of the day/year. Either way, I enjoyed myself. It was disappointing to see the amount of trash people have left behind. If you bring it, take it back home with you & dispose of it properly. I will visit again before & I return home, this time Ill go early am.
