Awful, horrific people. Three weeks ago (on a Friday) I was seated at a table with my two friends though I explicitly stated I was having a small bite and drinks. Tonight I was denied a table (on a Tuesday) because it was policy to not seat people at tables unless they have dinner. In fact, they showed me a small darkened seat in a corner with no table my guest and I could potentially be served a drink and snack (oh lucky us). Who goes to a basement bar to have dinner? Homophobia? Elitism? Just plain mean? Who knows? This is the worst of Midland. I feel awful. I suggested this place to my friend. Never again.

I really wanted to love this place. The vibe is so cool but at the end of the day its a bar so lets talk drinks. We were already a couple of drinks in when one of us ordered whiskey neat. The bartender, a different one than had been serving us, says all of our liquor comes as a double pour thats our policy is that ok? This was the first time we learned that our previous drinks were twice as expensive as we thought.... the drink comes and wow thats a skimpy pour. Friend mentions it and another bartender explains that they do things different and their shot is 1.25 oz so a double is 2.5 oz so youre getting about .5 oz less than you pay for with a double. I wouldnt normally be one to split hairs but hey when youre paying $20/shot it would be nice to get what you pay for. I had been drinking Brut with dinner upstairs and tried to continue downstairs but the bartender brought me a very small pour and said that they were almost out of Brut that i was drinking, that was the last of the bottle but shed bring me more of another kind she just didnt want to mix the two. It tasted very sweet compared to what Id been drinking so I asked another bartender if Id been accidentally poured prosecco. He asked the bartender that poured it and she said no it was Brut but he found the bottle and it was indeed prosecco. Like I said I really wanted to love this place... I have no problem with paying premium prices but I do appreciate getting what you pay for. Staff definitely needs training on the wine list to understand that just because they are in the same category ie bubbly doesnt mean they are the same and that they should be attentive to serve a customer what they order or offer alternatives instead of just making a substitution. Short shots for the price and not letting customers know youre going to charge them for a double (thats not) is also crummy business. This place has great potential to be a fabulous high end bar but quit trying to cut corners to increase profits and instead elevate the service to match the price so customers will return.

Little experience with parking while there was an event going on outside, but the atmosphere was awesome. Theres a vintage feel and nice old fashioned style to the building, and a cool control panel that shows how the building was monitored and controlled. Food was a little pricy, but its upscale and well maintained so its worth it. Drinks were not skimpy on the alcohol and generous and they can even make you an Arnold Palmer! Fish with the caper dill is phenomenal! Classy, friendly, and attentive service. A must if you want a nice event or just getting together.

Ok wow, this place is swanky and I am in love. We showed up on a Monday for Happy Hour which is 4-7pm. The drinks were stunning and I can t stress how cool the vibe is. We ll definitely be back on a busier night for what I imagine is some good people watching. Daniel, our bartender was super friendly and even whipped up a creme brûlée martini on the fly after I asked for Bartender s Choice . *Note: Please don t ever do that when the bar is slammed with customers! Overall, huge fan. Consider me a future regular.

To be as accurate as possible, averaging the categories Service, Atmosphere, Food, Price Opals Basement is a 3. Great atmosphere, downtown Dallas/Bishop Art District vibe, with the Midland dress code (which is, whatever you have on your body). Extensive liquor offering, if youre a neat drinker, pours are not liberal. Crab cakes ($16) are not recommended, visually they bring to mind fried zucchini, and on this visit, overcooked and definitely not leaving you wanting another. Blue Cheese Wedge side salad ($6), DELISH and the star of this visit! Perfect amount of dressing ratio and spot on flavor, if you like okra - I do not, but my dining mate does & loved it - it and cherry tomatoes are the Wedges garnish. Pecan Crusted Chicken ($28) was over charred, tasting almost burnt and accompanying potatoes were undercooked. Chicken fried steak ($22) and mash was good. In house crust was perfect and steak was tender. Needed more seasoning, maybe if the gravy was jalapeno the dish would be more flavorful, but it was better than hundreds of other chicken fried steaks eaten elsewhere. Service was effective, polite, professional and far better than any service experienced in Midland. Meet somewhere for drinks with nice pours, then head to Opals Basement and feel like youve road tripped a few hundred miles to somewhere else!

Great bar and a fantastic addition to Downtown Midland! The decor is nice and the old AC control panel looks awesome! My only complaint is it can get a little warm down there. If your visiting Midland then my suggestion is have Dinner at Opals Table then head downstairs!
