Small place right close to the refineries. Have gone here since I was a kid in the 60s. The battleship Texas was always a high point. Well so now with the Battle Ship Texas no longer there is a bit less to see here! Im actually wondering why there isnt more facilities here to attract people. There is plenty of land but not really set up for people to come and recreate.

The attraction of the place was the ship they used in the battle, but it is not there, I do not know if it is under maintenance, but it has not been there for a long time, apart from that there is only the viewpoint and a small museum right there.

Must see to believe! Rich history of justice over tyranny! Enormous renovations across the entire site to bring the land back to the same in 1836. Take the guided tour. Watch the movie. Bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent. The place is huge and will take several hours to view. Make a day of it. Also hiking trails that I skipped.

The San Jacinto Memorial is a hidden gem that holds immense historical significance for the United States. Unfortunately, its importance seems to be fading into obscurity, which is a real shame. The memorial stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in American history, and visiting it is both educational and deeply moving. The site is beautifully maintained, offering a serene and reflective environment. I truly hope that more people will get to know about this remarkable place and visit it. Supporting the San Jacinto Memorial is essential to preserving this important piece of American s national heritage.

As a local Houstonian, San Jacinto monument was on my bucket list for 16+ years. Finally visited with family past weekend - Learnt about the history, Republic of Texas and other museum artifacts as well. You can take the elevator to the highest floor and observe the Ship Channel and surrounding areas, which is good as well.

I dont regret visiting, but was somewhat underwhelmed. Pros: Large, well maintained memorial and grounds. You can see it from miles away, its massive with a large reflecting pool and some walking trails. Plenty of free parking and not crowded at all. Staff were super nice and friendly, I think some of them were volunteers. There was a movie theater showing a well produced movie explaining the events and context of the San Jacinto battle once an hour. Really enjoyed the view of the surrounding area and the Houston shipping channel from the top of the memorial. I appreciated the information about what we were seeing from above, the tower was my favorite part. We also took a walk on the wooden boardwalk through the adjacent wetland and to our surprise came across a bright green snake on our path. Cons: For what you get, the admission price seems steep at 14.00. Besides the tower and the movie, there is only one small gallery with some artifacts of the battle, paintings and dioramas. The whole place feels rather dated and the elevator to the top of the tower is old fashioned and shaky. This is clearly one of the major projects built during the great depression, and it has the feel of a museum I visited as a kid on a mandatory school field trip. I think staff is really trying to make the site more relevant, the website is absolutely beautiful. The day we visited, there was supposed to be a family day with childrens activities. It was a little sad that we saw no families with younger kids, only older couples. Staff convinced us to do one of the kids crafts and we made a pretty yellow rose of Texas out of tissue paper. The site is now surrounded entirely by refineries, which also takes away from the atmosphere.

The San Jacinto Monument, standing tall amidst the coastal prairie, promises a glimpse into Texas history. However, my experience left me feeling underwhelmed. First, let s address the elephant in the room: the price. At $14 per person, it s as if they re charging admission to witness the birth of a nation. Perhaps they believe that the higher the fee, the more historical significance seeps into our souls. Spoiler alert: it doesn t. As I ascended the monument, I couldn t help but ponder the irony. General Sam Houston s ragtag army defeated Santa Anna s forces, securing Texas s independence. Yet, here we are, paying a small fortune to commemorate their sacrifice. It s like charging admission to a fireworks display celebrating the Fourth of July a bit counterintuitive, don t you think? Inside, the museum offered a modest collection of artifacts. The replica rifles were a highlight, though their weight left my arms questioning my life choices. The film well done, I admit recounted the battle, but I couldn t shake the feeling that Santa Anna got off easy. Texans showed him more mercy than he ever extended at the Alamo. Now, let s talk about the location. Nestled in an industrial area, the monument seems out of place. Picture this: oil refineries on one side, a towering tribute to history on the other. It s like hosting a black-tie gala in a fast-food joint incongruous and slightly awkward. In summary, the San Jacinto Monument is a pricey detour for history buffs. If you re willing to part with your hard-earned dollars, go ahead. But remember, the real heroes didn t fight for profit margins; they fought for freedom.

Anybody know what this place is? Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fightin the same fight that were still fightin amongst ourselves today. This green field right here was painted red, bubblin with the blood of young boys, smoke and hot lead pourin right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men: I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen. And you take a lesson from the dead. If we dont come together, right now, on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed -- just like they were. I dont care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each other. And maybe -- I dont know -- maybe well learn to play this game like men. Wait.....no thats the speech from Remember the Tirans. Sorry.

The observation deck was cool, the change machine was not working & I was short a quarter for the smashed penny machine, so we had to go down to get change. Luckily one of the volunteers told us about a penny machine by the gift shop. There was also a crowd of school kids running around yelling which made the experience a little less enjoyable.
