I love La Carafe and have been going here for decades. Cant beat the ambience. This is a wine bar with some beer. The only reason Im not giving it 5 stars is because the bartenders (both upstairs and down) dont know much about wine. You would expect a wine-bar to have bartenders who know wine...

This is just a beer and wine spot, no food, but quite lovely. It s the oldest building in Houston so expect old. It even smells old! Also, the bar top was brought in 1950 when it was converted to a bar and at that time, it was said to be over 100 years old! It s quite a remarkable feature! La Carafe is across from a lovely park. We ordered food from a great taco place around the corner and drank cheap draft outside. On Thursday, hundreds of bicyclists gather at the park across the street and take off after dark on a huge ride. We watched them go and it was so fun to watch. The corner pharmacy also sells wine so we picked some up before heading out. Just a lovely spot to take a break from walking around the gorgeous city of Houston.

Was in there last night. Bartender middle aged lady was under the influence of something, walking around like a zombie, couldn t get a second drink. Even tried to flag her down to tell her the shiner boch tap handle was left running and he wouldn t acknowledge us even to tell her that! Watch maybe half a keg drain out onto the kegerator. Bizarre experience at a place that has potential!l she was so aloof that the beer was splashing up onto her and she still had no idea

Great atmosphere very retro so if you are into that, this will be a luxury for you. I got 2 ciders (since Im not a fan of bear) they were DELICOUS. I will post a picture of the exact ones I got. They ran me about 5 bucks each which made it very affordable for leisure drinking. Would recommend this spot for sure if you are chilling and want to catch a vibe. P.s. I didnt attempt to order food so dont know how that is or if they are serving it still

This building has been around since the mid-1800s, and Im a sucker for any spot with history! This spot is beer and wine ONLY and offers munchies such as chips or crisps, depending on the noun of your preference. Its a cool spot to go and chill while enjoying a cold beer or a glass of wine. Yes, some of the wines and beers offered are local. There are two levels to this location, and both offer a very cool atmosphere as there are various oddities surrounding the interior. There is patio seating on both levels, which offers nice calming views. This spot is rumored to be haunted, but I can neither confirm or deny the rumors. Stop in, take a load off, and relax. Perhaps you may have a paranormal time? Or, if anything, enjoy a good time with good people and a cool atmosphere!

First Im ever came here was this last Thursday because I saw this place on Instagram as the oldest and most haunted bar in Houston. Well its no ghosts dared to show up, that Im aware of, it was an outstanding experience that felt just like you were in New Orleans, keep in mind this is a beer and wine bar and that is what you should expect. The prices were really great, the owner and the head bartender made wonderful wine suggestions for me and my friends. And there was a live band even on Thursday that was outstanding.

So it all began when we choose to go out for brunch. We hit a few places before arriving here. We stayed a short period, but after leaving and waking up the next day I noticed I had misplaced my wallet and I knew I would never recover it. But a few days later, I recieved a letter from Ted, the owner he had found my wallet and told me to come and get it. I was excited and thankful for this place and for him finding it. Im definitely a customer for life. This place is a great dive and the atmosphere is very nice and chill. The bar is well lighted with great ambiance and the history is great to learn about. I enjoyed coming here and the old cash register which must be cranked before using so you cant use card, CASH ONLY, but it was worth the experience. This is my new favorite place to go during the week and weekend. Great staff and well priced drinks. Give it a try!

This place is so unique. It in the oldest commercial building on Market Square. The bar has been in continuous operation since 1954 (I think). They have only closed when ordered for Covid. It is a beer and wine bar. For many years there was no electricity but they have modernized a bit. The cash register is over 100 years old and beautiful. I recommend at least taking time for a drink and a short visit.

The bar itself is gorgeous! But the service definitely needs improvement. I had a bartender give me attitude when I gave him $23 on an $8 bill because he incorrectly assumed I wasnt going to tip. (Prior to this, mind you, I pointed to what I wanted on the menu and spoke it out loud, and he still gave me the wrong drink.) I tipped $5 on my $8 bill and dipped to another bar. May his day improve.

Very old bar with some great conversation. Met a wonderful local couple while traveling there and ended up meeting up for a great closing to a wonderful day in Houston. The bar is old, neat, great bar and drinks, as well as wonderful decorations. Great selection of wine and beer. Cash only and it is a local hangout! Enjoy.

Coolest bar in Houston turns out to be the oldest commercial building too. The register is 100 years old and it only goes up to $9 so all drinks are less than $9. Bar tender had a group with a tab for $1000 so he had to turn that handle 111 times Cash only, because look at that register, and beer and wine only. Must see in Houston

This place has a vibe all its own. Its the oldest bar in Houston, so Im told, and I dont doubt it one bit. When you step in off the crowded, loud and frankly a bit obnoxious Saturday night streets of downtown, its like being transported back to this nostalgic, beautiful bar lit by candle light. Even the air has that old time book smell. Very chill, but the bartender was kind and attentive. We even saw the owner who looks like the type of older woman you could write a novel about sitting in the corner by herself. Reasonably priced bottles of wine. Will definitely come back for another sexy date night.

Forgot my mask. Bartender/Owner chastised me about not having one while he literally had people sitting 2-3 feet in front of his face at the bar not wearing masks. Its his right to make that policy, but he should practice consistency. Otherwise, he looks like and proves he is a fool.
