The Black Pearl Is our favorite place to frequent when in Galveston. I love the stuffed flounder and they have THE BEST gumbo. Its a small, popular place so get there early or be preparing to wait, but well worth it. Staff are friendly and hardworking. I highly recommend!

The food is generally good, it is in a central location, clean bathrooms. The fried dishes are well cooked and crispy, the seafood is fresh, the only thing that could be improved is the gumbo.

We came here during our stay on the island. Everywhere was a long wait because it was a holiday weekend. We stumbled upon this place with the least amount of wait. Service was friendly and the food didnt take too long to come out. We decided to order a few items to share. I thought the food was subpar and could have been better. - Seafood gumbo: ordered the bowl versus the cup since it was better for a group. My favorite item out of rhe bunch. Good flavors overall. - Crab cakes: came with 2 crab cakes, good for sharing and it was packed with crab meat. - 4 dozen oysters: the size of the oysters were disappointing, it was smaller than expected. - Cajun shrimp: got the 1lb shrimp. It was served over ice so it was cold but not a big problem. It goes better with a sauce. I didnt feel like it had a lot of flavor. - Fried seafood platter: felt there was too much batter and not enough seasoning. Definitely needed to dip in a sauce for more flavor.

Great food, great service just a little loud, but it is also a bar. This is our second or third time to visit the black pearl. The food is very consistent and servings huge. Our service really was near perfect. We went at 3:30pm so when I ordered the daily special the waiter was new so they had to apologize that no longer available she was great, as if I had stopped and read the sign the lunch special ended at 2pm.. my wife got the oysters and the soft shell crab po boy. And I had the shrimp po boy. They were perfect... thanks for a great late lunch

Went here after another place was full. As opposed to other reviews, I found the service very good. Attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and very polite. As others stated, the inside really doesnt have an identity or any charm. Portions are very large, so order less than you think. We had the calamari, and was really great. Maybe 2lbs of calamari or more. Enough for 6 people easy as an app. Great seasoning. The warm fuzzy stops there though. Crabcakes were inedible, with no discernable flavor or crab present. Oysters 3 way was average, the spicy shrimp version was by far the best. For the 150 bill for 3, save your cash and find another seafood place, unless you really crave calamari.

Food was pretty good. Prices are fair. Ambience was ok. Interior is so-so. Overall, it fits the Strand vibe. But unfortunately, there was one huge turn off. Our server spent more time telling customers about his problems than doing his job. When we were first seated, I overheard him telling a table that he had something charged to his debit card that he wasnt expecting. Then he told us that he had something really bad happen to him. Then, he told the table behind us that he was distracted because something happened that hurt his heart. And he didnt know how long he could make it at work. Not sure if he was playing the sympathy card for tips, or he really did have something bad happen and hes the type to overshare. Either way, when youre at work, and your job is to serve other people, the last thing we want to do is spend our hard earned money listening to someone beg for sympathy or try to excuse subpar service. Overall, the experience was decent. But the constant poor me sob story we had to hear this guy tell all his tables really took away from an enjoyable evening.

We waited for 1 hour and 15 minutes to get our food and some of it came out wrong when it finally arrived. I told our waiter that this is not what I ordered and he said Im sorry and walked away. For those at our table that did get their order correct the food was not that good. We live on the island. There are a lot of other good seafood places to eat.

My family and I made a really good choice visiting the Black Pearl in Galveston on our recent vacation! Although parking in the area is a little hard to find (not their fault), the food and service were both great! Our server was a very friendly young man (sadly, I cant recall his name) who was very attentive and kind the entire time. I ordered their Fried Seafood Platter (6 shrimp, 6 fried oysters, 1 catfish filet, 2 boudin balls, your choice of side [I chose onion rings], and a dinner salad) and my wife ordered the Oysters Three Ways (Rockafeller, Haelen, and Diablo, in this case), and both of our dishes were DELICIOUS, fresh, and expertly prepared! We had plenty of food to split between the both of us, and I can safely say we enjoyed every bite - even the onion rings, which were perfectly fried, crisp, and sweet! I would really recommend you give the Black Pearl a chance if youre in the Galveston area, looking for some fresh, well-prepared seafood! Neither the food nor the service will disappoint you, if your experience is anything like ours!

I had the misfortune of dining at the Black Pearl Restaurant in Galveston, and let me tell you, it was an experience I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy. From the moment I stepped in, I should have known things were going south. The ambiance, which some might describe as rustic, felt more like an afterthought. The food, if you can call it that, was an abomination. I ordered the seafood platter, expecting fresh, delectable bites from the Gulf, but what I received was a greasy, congealed mess that would make even a fast food joint blush. The shrimp was rubbery, the oysters were overcooked, and the fish was so drenched in oil I could have wrung it out and powered a small car. Greasy doesn t even begin to describe it. Disgusting is more accurate. It s as if the chef had a vendetta against taste buds everywhere. As for the service, it was as delightful as a root canal. Our server, who appeared to be practicing for the world s worst service awards, was inattentive and acted like our presence was a major inconvenience. After waiting for what felt like an eternity, our food arrived cold perhaps a blessing in disguise considering its actual state. Water refills? Forget about it. Checking to see if we needed anything? Not on their agenda. In summary, if you re in Galveston and looking for a place to ruin your evening with bad food, greasy dishes, and disgusting fare served with a side of terrible service, the Black Pearl Restaurant is your go-to spot. Otherwise, save yourself the trouble and steer clear. This was one pearl that definitely didn t shine.

The service was so bad yesterday. Our waitress walked up to our table and just stood there waiting for us to greet her. I asked what wines they had and she reached to another table and just handed me a list. She did not bring us waters or even engage us in any way. The wine was dropped off and was clearly old as it was so strongly vinegar. She never came back. We asked another waiter to get us some oysters. We sat there with bad wine and no waters while our waitress was at the end of the bar on her phone. After about 10 minutes of her never looking up from her phone we were ready to leave. I had to walk over to her and interrupt her phone scrolling to tell her to cancel what we had. I told her she never offered us water, the wine was bad and we were not about to sit here and pay good money to be ignored. Her response was ok. We won t be back. She was not the only employee hanging out on their phone. No manager in sight. Went down the street to eat elsewhere and had a great meal with great service.

I saw a nearby patron, who happened to be hispanic, with a plate of the Tuesday special shrimp enchiladas. I had to ask him how they were. After hearing him rave about the shrimp enchiladas, we decided to stray from our go-to shrimp poboy. They did not disappoint. They were so delicious, including the rice. As always, portions are plentiful. Leftover we heated that evening. Two meals for the price of one.

SCRUTINIZE YOUR BILL! We went at happy hour and had the catfish and fish tacos. Everything was fine except for the bill. The two drinks were priced correctly but the apps were priced at about double the HH menu price. I pointed it out and the food server left the table without saying one word. Brought it back and promptly left. I noticed the bill only had one of the two entrees priced at HH prices. I went to the cash register where she had my card in the device ready to run it thru and mentioned the error and again a muted response without any concern or apology. Must have thought this tourist wouldnt catch the billing error. Ive seen this in other high volume tourist areas so be aware.

She was able to remove the charge for my sandwich and an order of boiled shrimp that we ordered. Beware, if you order the boiled shrimp they come out on ice and are cold, not hot. This is hard to do because personalities are important and the two working were great but in this business the food prep, cleanliness and hair around food by staff was the problem. First the ambiance of bar and restaurant was small and cozy. The waiter had dreads in his face the whole time he spoke to you and handled your food and drink etc. His hair was not secured and out of his face which could and should have been done but it was swinging around nonstop as he spoke. The menu had small gnats caught inside plastic binder that was damaged. The crab meat sautéed was full of shells in ev single bite. No taste of butter at all. The oysters were small and had dark centers. They were not pretty and not even med to large. Very small. The jalapeños stuffed cream cheese poppers tasted like old oil. Not impressed at all with what we had. Great place for cold beer. Older crowd. Loud patrons at bar made it uncomfortable with families appearing uncomfortable while eating. Went due to prior ratings. Maybe it was a bad night. Idk.

Probably one of the worst dining experiences from the wait time to the food and service. We waited for over an hour and by the time we got a table it became clear why the wait times were so long. The staff all seem nice and kind, but our particular server was more interested in socializing with other customers or wait staff for extended periods while we literally watched our food sit in the window ready for delivery. Our salads sat for over 10 minutes waiting. When entrees were delivered the food was bland and required salt. Boudin balls were barely seasoned and too mushy. Fried catfish was bland but nicely crispy. The gumbo was watery much like a canned soup and not home made. The redeeming dish was the oysters. Other than that drinks are overpriced and it was absolutely not worth the wait. Hard pass!

Great place for lunch and dinner. Good seafood options, cajun dishes, and oysters (if you like oysters). My favorite dishes are the red beans and rice, as well as the shrimp diablo. The service is great, all of the servers seem happy to be working. The atmosphere is really cool, set in an old historic Galveston building right in the middle of downtown.

Food- I had the catfish tacos, yummy. Husband had gumbo, unfortunately quite greasy, so we brought it home, refrigerated it, skimmed off the hardened grease, and it was much better. Service- with a smile! Atmosphere- We didn t know before we arrived but this place, when busy, is way too loud to have a lunch meeting. We literally could not hear each other talk. Also an overwhelmingly strong and unappetizing smell of Pinesol in the restaurant which permeated the taste of the food. Overall our 1st visit will also be our last. Too many other better places serving higher quality seafood in restaurants that don t reek like Pinesol. (Such as Gumbo Diner, or Gaidos, or Shrimp n Stuff).

I love the food. My wife just came in to ask some questions but we saw how the food looked and we decided to stay. The waitress (sorry I forgot her name)was amazing with an awesome recommendation and knowing the plates and ingredients, she took care of our food restrictions and at the same time recommended me one of the best fish I ever ate ( I love fish). The flounder fish stuffed with the crab cakes was on another level the waitress warned me about the size of the plate but I took my chances and I won the battle between me and the fish My wife asked for the ceviche and it was really good. Definitely recommend and a return restaurant for me so for the restaurant Thanks for a really good experience and for you guys just go. Dietary restrictions: The waitress was really away from gluten free options and what she can or she dont cant do to make the plates ready for us

The place was not busy for lunch. The raw oysters were fresh, the shrimp po boy with the fried okra was amazing. The gator bites were good, some were chewy but overall not bad. The seafood gumbo needed a little more seasoning but it was filling. Our server was very attentive and our needs were met at our table without being asked. It was very filling. Our family of 4 needed to take a walk on strand to digest our meal.

Edit: their online prices do not reflect actual prices. Maybe an oversight, but it needs to be corrected. Ordered raw oysters, fried mushrooms, fries, gator bites, and a cup of red beans and rice. The oysters were good. The mushrooms were big and a big portion. They were good but needed a bit of seasoning. The fries were cooked well and really liked them. The gator bites were very tender and, again, big portion. The red beans and rice were very good. I would have preferred a little kick to them. The place was clean, the service was great and friendly. Jr was very attentive and ready to answer any questions. I would definitely come back.

This oyster bar should be embarrassed with the oysters that on the half shell they serve. It looked like the grabbed a plastic tub of frying oysters and threw them on a shell. We asked and they claimed all gulf oysters are small. Tonight we ate at Gaidos and they are serving proper gulf oysters on the half shell

Dined here with my family the night we stayed at the Tremont house hotel. We were pleasantly surprised - not only was it only a block away from the hotel, but the food was some of the best seafood I ve ever had in Galveston! Micah, our server, took great care of us. Would 100% come back again.

The service was great. Very friendly and very helpful. One of my kids had not had a lot of seafood and our wait-staff talked them through and made a very good suggestion. The oysters were superb! The seafood gumbo was good, and the chicken sandwich was the size of my daughters head. The atmosphere (at 2 in the afternoon) was relaxed, very low-key, like... jeans and t-shirt may stick out as chic.
