Its a good tavern, opens really late at noon. No food and cash only. We went there after our motorcycle ride just to find out they only serve beer and that too bottles and cans. No draft beers. Its cash only which is a bummer, coz no one keeps enough cash on hand. Plus beers are little expensive but okay. The ambience is like any tavern, old school and rustic which is exactly why we went there. They have enough parking for all, and picnic benches on the back. They had a bbq place as well but I think they closed it coz when i asked the server inside what time the bbq opens, she was like what bbq? Good place for beer . Gud atmosphere. No food. Vegetarian options: No food, just beer Parking: Parking on non-paved road.

Is it rude to say this place was cleaner than I expected? Because it was, lol. From what if read online I was braced for a dingy, if not gross, experience. While the womens room smelled due to the water from the faucet (a fault, I am sure, of the water table being low), the tavern was your run-of-the-mill dive, with clearly comfortable regulars, a juke box, a decent beer selection, and the ambiance one would expect from a Texas bar basically in the middle of nowhere.

A throwback to yesteryear, the Devil s Backbone Tavern is one of the last true Texas Hill Country Ice Houses left in existence. Stop in on a hot summer day for one of the coldest beers west of IH-35. Not only are the beers super cooled, they have a full-bar and an attached dance hall. They seem to have live music most weekends, and look for special events. They also have a grill shack out back with great burgers for ten bucks. I recently went here while they had a small flea market in progress with vintage clothes, jewelry and someone selling old tools and kitchen gadgets. I always have an interesting time at the Devil s Backbone, you will too.

Theres a rock in e fireplace mantel that looks like the Devils face and the ceiling is shaped like a coffin. Dont be scared! Beer is ice cold too yall. Took my 90 yr old Dad for his first time. He said the Coke was cold too! If you ever drive down hwy 32 and pass it, turn around and go check it out.

What a hidden treasure! Advertise is the oldest dive bar in Texas and I have to say if this is not it then its exactly what I would envision as being so. Quaint little interior with a large dance floor and adjacent dancehall. The dance hall is very rustic and well kept at the same time. Perfectly conditioned and original construction from what I would guess to be the 1920s. Everyone is cheerful and divide is perfect on any weekday and Saturday night. Bottled beer only and its usually about $5 a beer. The back patio is not visible from highway 32 on the front so it creates a nice private little Oak Grove picnic table sitting area. Plenty of parking and I think this spot will continue to be a thriving dive bar as San Marcos and Canyon Lake continue to grow and become more popular to folks from other areas of the country. The view of the Blanco river valley is absolutely breathtaking across the highway as youre pulling in. This is a hidden gem and one that you should definitely visit with your friends or family!
