The view of the hills are very pretty. Im 68 years old and was unable to enjoy any attractions due to having to hike over three miles to see them. Very disappointing trip. I have back and oxygen issues. You should provide accessibility by roads. I went to Caprock Canyon and loved every minute of it .

We have lived in Texas for 24 years and this was our first time at Palo Duro. Shame on us. This is a fantastic park, at least if you like to hike or bike. Lots of trails to choose from. Ive read other reviews about encountering not-so-friendly park employees, but the only interactions we had were pleasant. One big plus is the trading post serves Blue Bell ice cream! Two things to be aware of. One is the biting flies that will drive you crazy. Not sure if this is the same at other times of the year, but they were bad the last week of Sept. So beware. Also IMO, the best campground is Hackberry, at least sites 10 through 32 (we stayed in 18 and it was really nice). Sites 1-9 are mostly out in the open. The other campgrounds are also fairly open and close together Toilets: Restrooms and showers are just OK. Picnic area: Picnic area was nice and mostly shaded

Palo Duro Canyon State Park lays claim to the title of 2nd deepest canyon in the United States. Heavy rains may at times affect trail closures within the park, while the roadways throughout the park remain open. One may stop at the Visitor s center, containing a gallery of local artisan made items, after viewing a movie about the area s history including a battle that occurred nearby. Also within the park are two campgrounds and a park managed glamping facility. Seasonal horseback riding may also be available. Of note are the numerous semi-private picnic area turnouts, many with bathrooms nearby. Bathrooms near the campgrounds also have showers. Finally there is a Restaurant in the center of the park. The food choices are common fare of hotdogs and hamburgers fries and O-rings. Camping supplies and souvenirs are also available at this location considered a must see when in the Amarillo TX area.

Traveling from KY to AZ. 36 foot fifth wheel, tow vehicle and second car. Stopped here for 2 nights. Site 85. 50/30/20A and water. No sewer, but 2 dump stations in park. After backing in (very easy) realized it can be used as a pull through entering in front of site 87. Very roomy site. Covered picnic table and fire ring/grill. Didnt use restrooms or showers, but they were clean. Most of site is red dirt, but parked on asphalt and picnic table is on concrete pad. Close to level. If youve never been here, the Mesquite camp area is like 5 or 6 miles past the park entrance gate. Steep grade into canyon and curvy road. Now for the experience. Although some would complain about some things in this park we were able to overlook any problems (we had none anyway) because it was so beautiful. This is the nicest park weve been to in several years. Great scenery, trails everywhere and wildlife. We saw mule deer, roadrunners, rabbits, turkey, lizards, huge centipede, longhorns and lots of birds. Sat at bird viewing station behind the tradepost for a while and saw many different birds. It was hot during the day and cool at night in September. Would definitely stay again. Fees listed include fees for 3 vehicles. $48/night

This place is phenomenal and right here in Texas. If you overlook the blight of the innumerable windmills blotting out the sky, its a beautiful 7 hour trip from my home in central Texas. Upon arriving I was greeted with the welcoming smiles of the extremely helpful park employees. They give me a marked up map explaining how to get to my campsite and Im sent on my way. Spending my time here I tried to think of the best ways to describe it. I settled on a list of pros and cons. Bear with me. Pros: This place is BEAUTIFUL!!! Seriously, pictures dont do justice to it. Theres a reason the word breathtaking was invented and Im fairly certain this place falls neatly into that category. This place is a hiking wonderland. Tons and tons of trails for all skill levels and interest levels (FYI: My photos are from the Rock Garden Trail which climbs from the floor of the canyon to the top). Its MAD cheap. Theres a free to use shower in the latrine. There are porta-cans in the campgrounds. There is NO cell service at the bottom of the canyon (or even above halfway down). Theres a trading post that has free wifi. Theres a seeming anti-partying stance as public consumption of alcohol is prohibited. This is great because peace, quiet and stuff. The campgrounds are quite nicely appointed with fire-pits, water spigots and a covered picnic table. Cons: The campsites are REALLY close together. Like with anywhere you go camping, especially in state/national parks, the campsites are super bunched together. I experienced this in Grand Canyon as well. This makes for a rather noisy experience, what with people walking to and fro, bluetooth speakers (with Queen on shuffle and repeat) and there was a large group across the way with several boisterous children. There is NO cell service at the bottom of the canyon (or even above halfway down). Yes, I did list this as a pro but I think it can also be a con. Public consumption of alcohol is prohibited. Also listed as a pro, I see it also as a con because, the unruly behavior of some penalizes us adults whod like to quietly enjoy a beverage in the peace and quiet. All in all, Im going back again, likely twice a year at least. There was so much to see and experience here. I love it.

The scenery is absolutely beautiful. The hiking trails are fantastic and the campground/sites are clean and private. This is one of our very favorite state parks. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed on all of the trails, however, as dog owners, we find some of the trails too dangerous to take the dog. Some of the drop offs are rather steep and in our opinion dangerous for a dog. There is also very little to no shade on some of the trails. Common sense about choosing a trail in regards to the dogs ability is important. We love hiking with our dogs, but some of the trails we hiked without them. Also check paws for pricklies.

Palo Duro is a MUST and I highly recommend the Glamping! A little pricey but so much is included which made it worth it! Lots of hiking trails to choose from. We did the famous Lighthouse Trail which was right at 6 miles. Fairly easy until the climbs at the end, but SO worth it! The staff at every building were so friendly. The Trading Post had great food including breakfast, lunch and dinner made to order. The Visitor Center had beautiful artwork and lots of things to purchase. It was in the 70° while we Hiked (9:00 12:00) and it was already pretty toasty. Would love to go back and visit the Big Cave and some other trails! Toilets: Bathrooms were very clean. Showerhouse for the Glamping was at one of the RV campgrounds (a bit of a walk). Only 2 showers & 2 toilets but we never had to wait, even on a holiday weekend. Dog-friendliness: Very pet friendly, even the glamping cabins! Picnic area: Lots of areas to picnic with great views of the canyon.

Palo Duro Canyon is sort of like a mini Grand Canyon - visually. We were just there (August) and it was 109 in the bottom of the canyon. The camping sites were nice. Most of the spots in Juniper were pull through but not all. Once the sun started down the evening became bearable enough to go for a short walk. It s very, very quiet and dark there and the stars at night - well they re big and bright and look a lot like a handful of glitter splashed across the sky. We ate at the Trading Post which is known for its burgers. It s about the only place with food in the park. The burgers were good and fresh made. It s also a little souvenir shop. Going down into the canyon you ll run across a 10% grade. It s pretty steep. No problem for our big truck pulling a 5th wheel, but some might have issues. PDC also has a great musical that s put on in an outdoor amphitheater. The best moment is when a horse and rider race across the top of the canyon carrying a Texas flag. The Grand Canyon is just an incredible experience. But Palo Duro Canyon is pretty great and the bottom is way more accessible. Toilets: Small and toasty. But adequate. There are bathrooms without showers and some with. The showers are at the end of each camping loop. Picnic area: The campsites in our loop had covered picnic tables. I m not sure about the rest of the park.

Very nice place to take the family, we went here on a week trip to see Texas. The drive through the canyon itself is short, I would suggest stopping on the sides to explore a bit and take photos. You can double back to the entrance once you get to the bottom, so dont worry too much if you missed a photo opportunity. Depending on when you go, itll be hot, be prepared for it and being lots of water. We didnt go on any trials due to the heat but it looks really amazing. The visitor center has a lot of really cool stuff to buy. The roads were slightly steep but dont worry about not being able to drive it, we took a 30 feet RV down without any issues.

It s solid. It s nowhere near as grand as the Grand Canyon. Price? $8/adult person. Kids, free. Personally, it should be $10/vehicle. So we drove in for $16 and were underwhelmed. The one hike we did was full of grasshoppers and horse flys. The Big Cave? Pretty decent. 5 minute walk and neat, but in total a 15-20 minute experience. The tourist center? Quaint and with very nice view of the canyon. However there was no water fountain. Outside of this, everything else is average. For Texas? It s a solid park. Is it worth $8/adult? No. $16 for 2 adults? Nope. But driving thru once, sure. I guess. If there was a water fountain and $10/vehicle, I d be more inclined to give a 4 star. It s a reluctant weak 4 star. Picnic area: Dozens of picnic areas but it s so hot. Lots of short trees and spots to pull over.

We had a great time at Palo Duro Canyon. Stayed at site 133 in the Sagebrush campground and it was perfect. Felt secluded, even though there are campsites on both sides. Shaded picnic table and grassy area. The Texas musical was about a 0.3 mile walk from our campsite to the show. Take a flashlight or use your phone flashlight on the way back as it is dark when it is over. The Pioneer Nature Trail is next to this campground on the north side and leads to the Prairie Dog Town Fork Red River tributary stream and is a 0.5 mile loop. SO many large grasshoppers on this trail flying all over the place as you walk by. The Trading Post is next to this campground on the south side and has souvenirs and food. The Glamping cabins are to the east of it. We drove the loop to the rest of the canyon on our way out and it was great from the comfort of our motorhome. We had our 4 younger kids, 4 dogs, and a grandfather, so no big hikes for us with the heat. We had no T-mobile cell service, but there is wifi when you are within range of the park buildings (Texas musical amphitheater, trading post, visitor center). Toilets: Restrooms and showers at the Sagebrush campground. Typical campground restroom. Not air conditioned. A few large spider webs with spiders. Dog-friendliness: Very dog friendly. Saw many other campers with dogs. Picnic area: Site 133 had a great shaded picnic table right next to the parking spur. It had some trees and brush that made it feel more secluded from the other campsites.

The park is very clean and we have always felt safe when traveling through here. Toilets: The restrooms are available at most stop locations. Some of the facilities have shower stalls as well.

I was happily surprised that I liked Palo Duro as much as I liked the Grand Canyon! Palo was not as long as the GC but it was just as impressive! Dog-friendliness: I am very frustrated with ALL places, especially restaraunts, that allow pets because I am deadly allergic to furry creatures, so I cannot go in a place where there are animals! Animal dander flies freely thru the air to get all over your food and your person, but it could really hurt people like me! What is wrong with people?

One of the best Texas State Parks. Love the canyon and have really enjoyed our past stays in the cabins. One of the most interesting places to see in the state, though pretty hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Fall and spring are best but even March can be really cold based on our experience.

A great park with hiking and biking trails for all levels of expertise. The 16 mile route was a great way of seeing the park without being under the sun for too long. We did some of the easy biking trails. Just be careful as it can get really hot during the middle of the day.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park was formed by the Red River. Its dimensions, 190 km long and an average width of almost 10 km, make it the second largest canyon in the United States, behind the famous Grand Canyon in Arizona. First of all, it is a state park so it is not possible to use the Parks America card and therefore you have to pay the daily entrance fee which costs $8 per person to be paid to the Visitor Center, just beyond the entrance, which is open every day from 9am to 17. Get maps of the park and trails, and general information on the condition of the trails and the road. About 4 km further on there is a small Trading Post, where you can buy souvenirs and snacks as well as a petrol pump, in case you need to fill up before entering the park. The main activities to do at Palo Duro Canyon State Park are to take the scenic route and do some trekking trails. Only one road runs through the park. It is the P5, about 25 km long which touches all the points of interest. But what you absolutely must be able to do, which is located about 7 km from the Visitor Center, just before a crossroads is the entrance to the Lighthouse Trail, the most popular path in the park, 9 km long return, with a a height difference of 150 metres. Cross the bottom of the canyon among rocks, dry streams and bushes, until you reach the 90 meter pinnacle known as the Lighthouse, the true symbol of this park. The last stretch has a considerable slope, and to climb you may have to help yourself with your hands, but once you reach the top of the hill, the view is fantastic and will reward you for the effort. If you return to your car, continue on the road following the circular route that crosses the bottom of the canyon, after about 3 km after the crossroads, on the right, there is a small rest area. From here, a short walk takes you to the Big Cave, a large hole between the rocks. You will then finish the loop by returning to the visitor center at the beginning of the route.

Absolutely one of the best Texas state parks. Hands down. As a native Texan, Ive been to quite a few, but this one takes the cake. Beautiful views, clean restrooms, plenty of camping and RV spots and very well kept. Hardly any trash anywhere, and thats also a big thanks to the people that visit for cleaning up after themselves. On our visit today we hiked the lighthouse trail. Not a bad trail. Start early tho and BRING PLENTY OF WATER. At least two bottles per person minimum. More if its going to be hotter. Absolutely amazing views though. 100% worth the hike.

Palo Duro Canyon is a beautiful place, we stopped in on our trip back to Colorado for two nights. We stayed in Hackberry Loop with our Class C RV. The park host for this camping site is Bullet and he is the sweetest! He helped us because we did not have a vehicle on this trip. I can t say enough good things about Bullet. We also got to meet his sweet little Chihuahua, Mitsy. Thank you Bullet for all your help. If you get a chance to go to Palo Duro Canyon you should definitely go, it is breathtaking and stop in and see Bullet and Mitsy as well, you won t be disappointed!

Really beautiful landscape. We hiked the Lighthouse Trail and it was gorgeous. There were three of us and we each had water backpacks, sun hats and wore linen, which helped make our journey a success. It was 90 degrees, so we stopped a lot. The biting flies were a nightmare. Wear long sleeves and pants if you can. We used Deet and even that didnt keep them away. After our hike, we were ready for dinner, but the on-site restaurant had closed the kitchen by our arrival at 6:40, so we had to hustle the twenty minutes into town. In the evening we attended the Texas Musical which was worth it! It was so cute and everyone really did a wonderful job. The story was interesting, the singers were wonderful, and the effects kept our attention through the whole show. The campsite only had port-a-potties, and we desperately needed showers after our hot and dusty hike (the photo of my feet shows how dusty it was). There were also people playing loud music until about 2 am. Sound really carries out there, so we werent sure if they were at the campground or somewhere else.

Palo Dura Canyon. I have been here many times. This time I stayed in mesquite campsite. Full electric, water and the sites are spread out so your not in other peoples space. As an artist, I like getting up early before the crowds and getting some painting in. Its also a great time to hike. Lots of animals about it you pay attention. Toilets: Large and clean, running water and they have showers which is super nice in the summer months.. Dog-friendliness: Lots of room for hiking with your furry friends.

The visual has to be seen in person to be appreciated. The view was absolutely amazing! I would have loved to do more here and even hiked a trail but we had little babies with us and some that use a walker. We checked out the museum onsite it was cool. On our way leaving we spotted a place for zip lining, horse back riding & cabins. This is definitely a place I will be re-visiting in the near future. Toilets: There is a restroom up front on the opposite side as you are leaving, which is interesting because inside it tells you it was an old water tank. It still has the marker in the inside that shows the water levels. There could be more, we just didn t get that deep into the canyons as we had the little ones.
