Nature lovers beware. Whichever government department is in charge of this particular part of the great outdoors has decided that it is closed on Fridays, Saturdays , and Sundays. Most idiotic thing I have ever heard. How these imbeciles get into positions where they have control over things like this baffles me.

My husband planned a day with me and our kids to go walk this trail for Mother s Day. He and I had been here before and he knew how much I loved it. We packed up and driver here to find all gates closed. Turns out it s now closed on the weekends. Extremely disappointed. How are us locals able to enjoy this when we work during the week? Mother s Day plan = ruined. Anyone know what else we can do for the day? So bummed.

Nice trail, I used it all the time when we first moved out here. The trails and recreation areas are the whole reason we moved to the area. Now the county decided to shut it down except for the weekdays and I work Monday - Saturday so I cant utilize it any longer. Great way to punish the long time residents of the area.

Pretty trail but its hot! There really isnt a place to go in Texas without experiencing the heat. I got a little heat exhausted even though there is a lot of shade. Next time we will pack more water! I did this trail in the heat of summer while in my third trimester of pregnancy so I will say this is a very doable trail!

We love this trail and wanted to hike it today with the family, but come to find out the county has it closed every weekend because the people come, get drunk and tube down the river from there and leave the parking lot a mess as per the park ranger at Canyon Lake Swim area #1. I m sorry, but this is pretty much the only shaded hike near Canyon Lake and keeping this closed because people don t use the parking lot properly is NOT a good solution !! Find a better solution to this problem, COMAL COUNTY!! It s not fair for the rest of us that we can t access one of the best trails you have there on the weekends when most people are off and want to do an activity!!

The best place for trout in texas. People dont know the best way to catch stocked rainbow trout so Ill put the details here. Size down your tackle. Smallest line (4lbstest) smallest hook, smallest split shot weight to keep your bait down. Sharp cheddar cheese rolled up in a smal ball on your hook. Cast where the fast current ends and widens to a pool or a calmer part. Go to the texas wildlife department website and search for when trout is stocked and go here the next day! Dawn or at dusk.

Really beautiful trail with a gorgeous creek that has so many pretty trees and flowers. The trail is not long and relatively flat for most parts. One part had a good amount of shade to walk through and the other part is a little more exposed. The water is nice and clear and its ice cold if you do decide to dip your toes. Looks very well maintained and there is lots of parking. I like this place more than the Canyon Lake park on the other side of the road. Much more peaceful.

There is plenty to see on this short hike. One of my favorite spots to take a hike then jump into the river. If you enjoy a nature view of Texas, this is a nice little hidden area to check out. There is normally gravel parking on both sides of the river. This is a great spot to visit during the week but can easily be overrun during the holidays or summer time.

Short walk down a sketchy trail and you are at the river. It is shallow and we walked around in the clear cold water with the kids hunting some tiny frogs. Took some great pictures. On the way back up we found a friendly armadillo. I tried to catch him but he chose freedom and charged at my wife to make a clean escape.

Groomed and SHADY trail, less than a mile long. I give it 5 for the great shade because a shady trail is rare in this land of cedar scrub. Easy elevation changes. River is wading depth mostly but 6 in the pools. Water is drawn from deep in the lake; on July 28 the deeper pools were 50 to 55 (Im guessing). If you can see the dam the water is cold.

beautiful hiking trail w/ free & direct river access to either swim or fish. be warned that if you want to swim, the water is COLD AS ICE!!!! i d say likely 40°-55° easily so be prepared to shiver! it feels so refreshing once inside, so just take the plunge & don t be scared otherwise the temperature is torturous. river shoes clearly recommended as there s icky algae along the bottom. one of our favorite free river spots. not great to tube as most parts are shallow but great just to cool off. parking is free on either side. there s a nice view of the hill next to access road where you park.

For a short trail, probably less than 2 miles out and back, it offers beautiful scenery, variable elevations, and lots to explore! There is an easy level main trail, but I began on the rougher back trail nearest the river at the corner of the parking lot and was not disappointed. It was far more challenging than the flat smoothed path at the main trailhead. If you take this more difficult back trail, be prepared for some rock climbing, a bit of mud, and a couple water crossings. I spent a full 2 hours on this trail mainly from stopping to let my dog get wet in the river and to simply take my time and enjoy the views.
