Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Evans Family Law. Despite their high fees suggesting superior service, my experience proved otherwise. During my divorce case, I received poor advice that only increased my anxiety instead of providing reassurance. Despite not needing to file anything, as the case was initiated by my spouse, more than half of my $5000 retainer was quickly depleted without any significant actions taken on my behalf. No documentation was ever presented to the court for my side. Additionally, when I inquired about my ongoing case, they had no record of my parenting plan, which was completed but apparently never filed. Furthermore, if you decide to hire this firm, ensure you use the entire retainer, as attempts to obtain a refund of the remaining balance have been unsuccessful for months.

We had a prolonged experience with Evans Family Law Firm. We first spoke in July 2023 to begin an open and shut case. All we had to do was remove parental rights from my daughters biological father, uncontested, and then go through the adoption process. We were told on the initial call that it would be a very fast process because he was cooperative, which would make every other step go much faster & smoother, as well (just a few months tops, and only about $3500). A few months later, we finally got the case transferred to Travis county from out of town, which took lots of time and resources. The transfer apparently took months and thousands of dollars (along with having to send us one form twice to sign for some reason). We were then told we would be done before Thanksgiving or Christmas at the latest. I didnt hear much until late January when the court/hearing date started being finally processed for Feb. I emailed again mid-Feb, over two weeks later, to find out the court date as we still knew nothing. Every little thing cost an exuberant amount, and we went through thousands of dollars of our retainer for what appeared to be sending emails (which could cost anywhere between ~$20-$40 per email, depending who sent it, even if the email was only one or two sentences OR they just read it and didnt respond), filing things, or having discussions with each other in office about the case--there were lots of discussions about this easy, uncontested, open and shut case, too. Documents were sent individually over days rather than in batches, which only became an issue (outside email costs) when it was something like a notarization that could have been done together so I didnt have to go to a notary days apart. Otherwise, I had to contact them first to get any kind of news or update about the case or to get it moving. I allow that Im not a lawyer, but its my understanding that an uncontested stepchild adoption should only take about 3 months, 6 at the most (especially now that the home study--the long part--can be waived for situations like ours). Theyd give us timelines that told us before the holiday season of last year. It ended up taking 7 months to get to the hearing day with thousands more dollars spent than they originally suggested, and we honestly have no idea why things took so long or why it cost so much for what needed to be done (despite the itemized invoices we received). When we inquired, they basically just told us these things take time and resources, plus the holiday season (that the case should have been done before even getting to). Most of our contact was via email, so when we finally met them, they were really nice, and I felt bad for feeling negatively towards them. But then right after the court date, we were told we were going to pick up our certified copies (so we could start the other name change processes) that same day, which turned into you can come to the office next week to get them so they didnt have to wait around the courthouse that day, which then turned into another 3 weeks and had to meet them down at the courthouse yet again because, besides the certified copies, we had to sign something else in front of a clerk to give to them... and we didnt end up needing to do that. On top of this, they spelled the biological fathers name wrong on an official document and had to use more time and resources to get that fixed (though I dont believe they charged us for that--only the emails talking about it). By the end, it cost us over $8600 and *8 months later* finally being done (it was also over $1100 over the retainer even after they kindly didnt charge us for things here and there throughout the months). All of that being said, I am obviously happy with the turnout, and they were very pleasant in person. I just wish the journey would have been as smooth as they originally told us, and I feel I could have gotten the same turnout with a different journey elsewhere.

I was new to Austin (moved from Canada in 2022) and have had bad luck with the lawyers on my divorce case. Most of them were dishonest (overcharging for unnecessary hearings, neglect for case preparation and lack of knowledge in military divorce etc,.) but Mr. Evans showed immediate depth of knowledge in the issues presented and provided honest analysis. I am helping a friend go through a painful divorce and filled out the free consultation for this firm. She is a homemaker with no job at the moment. They tell her its not free and she pays almost $400 for an hour consultation. She had the consultation with a different attorney today who was cheaper and he only visited with her for 30 min. She called back to see if she could get the amount adjusted seeing that she did not meet with Evans and it was only 30 min. They told her no that he gave her sufficient information. What? I would hope that attorneys would be more empathetic to the situation and not try to milk every dime they can. Not good!

As for my experience: When I first hired Jimmy years ago we stormed a bit but I m a believer that sometimes you have to storm before you perform. Jimmy threatened to fire me as a client early on and I remember yelling back at him you re not firing me! Jimmy told me well, you gotta listen to me . Jimmy Evans is smart, easy to reach and did a good job on our agreed divorce. He did not add on superfluous charges which we appreciated. Unfortunately, his assistant/secretary was not at all accurate or on top of things. This resulted in numerous misspellings on Jimmy s drafts and a misspelling of both of our names on an official document that she filed with the court. And Jimmy charges $175/hour for her work! Evans family law firm - Katherine Obando - took forever to take care of my divorce. They seemingly forgot to file our papers, until we kept asking what was taking so long. They had claimed to have filed, but the clerks office said that was not true. Once it was done, I was glad it moved on. Since then, I have had to file for enforcement,. I tried to rehire the firm, thinking it would be easiest since they know the history. I have had 2 phone call appointments where no one calls, several unanswered emails. I had actually referred a friend, and she gave me Jimmy Evans personal cell, and said he had said to message him directly. Again, no response, and no answer to voice mails. I can only assume this to mean they know they did an awful job. Ive seen two attorneys since, and both attorneys I have consulted have stated it was worded very poorly, and is very unclear. I am having to pay to have parts of it clarified. For over $6,000, I would have expected more. I highly recommend you look elsewhere!

What was a fairly open and shut case, now has us waiting until October (at the recommendation of the firm) to appear in court again. My case is still on going and since the lawyer that I originally hire through this firm no longer works there 21days before final trial Katy Spencer and James Evans file a motion to withdraw as counsel stating it was my request without my knowledge. When I questioned them regarding this filing I get a phone call back from Katy Spencer 2 days later saying that motion to withdraw was a communication error within their office but if I wanted them to represent me in final trial I would need to give them an additional $8000.00 retainer. Then when I questioned the sequence and ethics of their actions through email I was told that I was being hostile. Needless to say I will be filing a greivance with the Texas bar association.

Let me save you from the agony, time and money I wasted finding the right lawyer. Before I hired Jimmy James Evan, we hired another attorney with tons of 5 star ratings I won t go into much detail here, other than to show the contrast, and that the 5 star ratings for our previous attorney were coerced. The previous attorney made us sign a document that stated if we reviewed them less than favorable, they would give up private details of our case to rebuttal the review! We thought this was standard language for all attorneys, but it WAS NOT. Please be cognizant that some review systems are altered in that way when you are looking through the reviews. Not these reviews (Evans Family Law) I m writing this on my own free will with no threats or coercion, no incentives either. Because I had two separate attorneys/practices on the exact same case and had to fire my first one, I can tell you the contrast between them, and without hesitation, I highly recommend Mr. Evans and Evans Family law Group. Once we fired the old attorney, a case that seemed to be on the back burner was put on high speed. We won the adoption quickly with Mr. Evans. I can tell you now, from my experiences unfortunately, it seems that judges, even case workers, have a better rapport with certain attorneys it s as if they know which attorneys are doing not only their due diligence, but the right thing for the children, and which attorneys are fighting for questionable rights or not doing their due diligence appropriately. Now, my opinion on this perception could be because Jimmy was actually a billion times more knowledgeable than my first attorney or it could be a real factor that his reputation precedes him for presenting everything perfectly or both. Ether way, there was a stark contrast between my other multiple-rated 5 star attorney (who took over a year with no resolution and easily went over 5000 dollars of the already estimated 5000 dollars with NO progress) then there s Jimmy s group who did EXACTLY what they said within a price range he discussed which was a fraction of the cost, not to mention he completed the case in three months even though he had to redo some of the footwork from the other attorney as ordered by the judge. Please stop here and give his practice a call if you have been searching for the right attorney. I wish someone would have told me this. If I can help one parent understand the value of this practice over any other, this review will be completely worth everything we had to go through before we hired Jimmy and his amazing team! Update 2020: As in my initial review, once again the Evans family firm has helped me establish a more feasible and sustainable co-parenting agreement. I was told the attorney would contact that afternoon. It is now Monday and not a return call. Same with another firm I called same day. Amazing customer service! I hired Jimmy Evans to write my pre-nup and his service was next to none. He gave me his rate up front unlike many other firms who leave the total cost a mystery. I had changed my mind about the pre-nup four/five different times and he did not show any frustration and continued to serve me. If theres a negative star chart, they are -100. Dont even waste your time or penny with them. All they do is make you repeating things and cannot keep up the important dates, and drain the retainer fees. He doesnt care about what his clients but just wants to brush everything under the carpet. I had a domestic violence case and he acts like nothing ever happened. i have to hired another lawyer in the middle divorce due to his careless and sloopy job. I felt he worked against me. And dont even let them to have a chance to say hi to your kiddos; otherwise they will said they babysit your kiddos. Hes the worest! I had to complained to him to Austin bar and State Bar of Texas due to the lack of work, sloppy jobs and over charging fees. Finding a good lawyer is difficult, but from the moment I walked into Jimmys office for a consultation, I knew I wanted him to represent me in my divorce. He never let me down throughout the process. Jimmy was always in contact, either by phone or emails, all through the day, and if need be, in the evenings. I knew he (and his wonderful staff) were on my side fighting for me. Going through my divorce was devastating, but knowing I had an excellent attorney like Jimmy made such a difference in easing the strain, stress, and uncertainty of the situation.
