Milonga Room

About the Company

rating: 4.1

Milonga Room is a cocktail & amaro focused bar tucked underneath Buenos Aires Café in the bustling and trendy east side of downtown Austin, TX. A step inside will transport you to another era with its vintage aesthetic in a romantic and intimate basement space. The bar focuses on Latin/South American, particularly Argentine, influenced cocktails & amaros from around the world - ask the staff about amaro flights that will take you on a journey of bitter delight. The menu also features a curated list of empanadas, tapas & desserts from the upstairs restaurant. Music from South America adds to the flavor and ambiance of our very intimate room - we often feature live music, burlesque & belly dancing shows, and complimentary tarot readings.

Milonga Room is an intimate and artsy lounge with the best cocktails on East 6th. This speakeasy under Buenos Aires Cafe makes you feel like you re in a stylish 1940s Argentinian living room, it s an excellent romantic date spot or place to grab drinks post dinner. The drinks are truly an art at Milonga Room we were blown away by the incredible taste of the cocktails and unique balance of flavors. Additionally, the bartenders were super friendly and knowledgeable, and they went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our experience (shoutout to Andrew!) My absolute favorite was the The Francessa, a delicate lavender cream cocktail with a beautiful hand crafted aesthetic. After just one sip I added Milonga Room to my list of best cocktails in Austin! We also enjoyed the Palermo (light and refreshing) and their spin on an espresso martini, the Carajillo Del Alma. Last but not least, one of the best parts of the Milonga Room is you can order empanadas and light bites from the restaurant above! Who knew cocktails paired so well with chimichurri.

Exceptionally mid. The prices at this bar are ridiculously high considering how weak and poorly made their drinks are. There are MUCH BETTER cocktail bars in this city in the exact same price range. The drinks here were weak and the presentation was just ridiculous.

The food was tasty, and the drinks were beautiful, but they were not at all strong enough to be worth that kind of money. This place is a little more on the expensive side for an Austin speakeasy, and while the presentation was great, and music was nice, the drinks were at most worth $14. The cheese board was an underwhelming portion for $20. Bartender was also a bit of an arse. I d skip this place for other speakeasy s out there, Austin s got plenty and this one didn t live up to the hype of the other reviews. You can find much better service, drinks, and vibes elsewhere and for a lower cost. Unless fancy cocktails that hardly taste like alcohol and fail to get you even the slightest bit tipsy while being served by an arrogant bartender is your thing, save your money.

A wonderful cocktail bar which specializes in amaro-forward drinks across the spectrum. The decor is prohibition-era and there are food options from the bakery upstairs. Enter around back to the left of the stairs.

We had an amazing experience at the Milonga Room. The space is cozy with velvet chairs and enough space between tables that you don t hear the next table s conversation. The cocktails are brilliantly crafted with delicious amaros, hand smoked cinnamon sticks and perfectly shaken ingredients. The bartending staff were fun and knowledgeable showing the excellence in their craft. We had a an amazing tailored experience with Andrew and are grateful for interesting small details he shared about his mixology philosophy.

Great spot to check out. It is a reservation type place, but that is only because it is pretty small, but this makes it cozy. You don t have to yell to have a conversation like other bars. Overall great vibe and ambience. Tried a couple of drinks, and they were some of the best cocktails I ve had. I love that they smoke their glasses (on certain cocktails). They best way to describe the drinks is that you get not only the taste, but the smell as you enjoy it. Service was very attentive. Will absolutely be back next time we are in Austin.

Tiny place, reservations required! They are strict on reservation timing so make sure you know what you booked (1 or 2 hours) going into it. They are also good at keeping you informed while there. Cozy spot with vintage vibes, but leaning towards shabby recently. Very unique menu, specializing in amaro/digestifs with heavy Argentinian influence. The waitress was knowledgeable and happy to answer questions, but the drinks seemed to be hit or miss. I was very happy with mine, but my husband was less than thrilled with either of his.

A very poor attempt to hitch a ride on the speakeasy bandwagon in Austin. From ambience to food to drinks, this was a disappointing and overpriced experience. So many other places in Austin do this better. A single light shines dimly at one end of the room, with the rest of the basement lounge in severe darkness. Not even the tiny candle on our table could help us see the difference between the stuffing of the two empanadas we ordered. The dish of gnocchi for $15 was astounding- about $1 per small gnocchi (which was so sweet a dish it should have been dessert). If you show up looking forward to a few tapas from the menu they list online, imagine our surprise when we were told we haven t updated the web site in a long time and half the items are not offered any more. The drinks were tasty and I can only assume presented in an attractive manner, but who could see them? Lastly, there is a mandatory 20% gratuity added to your bill. First, if it s mandatory, it s a service charge not a gratuity ; and second, the staff clearly have zero incentive to actually pay attention to you (we were two of only 6 people in the entire place, us and a table of 4, and we received no attention and had to get up and get the server any time we needed something). If you re here for a bachelorette party or want to be pretentious, make a reservation. If not, head to any of the other speakeasies in town.

Im so sad with my experience here at the Milonga Room. To celebrate my roommates birthday, her 2 sisters came into town all the way from Oregon & Massachusetts & we had booked a reservation for here WEEKS in advance. Upon arrival, we were ignored for 35 minutes as we waited in the cold outside. We then finally went in when someone else was leaving to be ignored for another 10 minutes by 2 of the hosts. They did not have our reservation in their system and said they could seat us in 20 more minutes. We decided to wait, and they finally found room to temporarily put us at while we waited (this was an hour past our reservation time). We were grateful they found room for us, but they continued to ignore us for another 30 minutes.. not taking our order or even provide us water as they served others around us. Finally after 1.5 hours, we moved to a table where the server approached us and said Lets forget about this all and start over.... not even a sorry. He said he would offer us all shots! My roommate simply wanted a glass of water and a drink. I said we wouldnt need shots, but taking some of our drinks off the bill would be nice for the service - he nodded. After we finally got served an hour and 45 minutes after our reservation, we got the check and they wanted us to pay for every drink. I kindly approached the server and explained Id like one drink off the menu and he began challenging me about this. Im grateful they finally took one drink off the bill after being challenged for a few minutes, but was thoroughly disappointed with this visit. I get the system had it wrong but the customer service was so shockingly poor I was laughing to myself. I strongly do NOT suggest this bar. There are such better speakeasies with SUPERB customer service. Spend your money at one of those.

We were super disappointed and had an awful experience here last night. Despite being a slow night with only a few tables, the hostess/waitress ignored us. It was like pulling teeth to get service for a few empanadas and drinks. At one point I made eye contact with her, she yawned at the bar, then walked right past our table without checking in. Drinks were overpriced and the bartender refused to accommodate putting one drink over ice. We were given 1 fork, zero napkins, and no water even though there were 2 of us. Worst of all, when we finally got the check (from the bartender as our waitress went MIA), they tacked on a mandatory 20% gratuity charge. I have never seem this except for large parties. We questioned the bartender about this and he got extremely rude and combative and told us they are sorry we re disappointed and if they lose our future business oh well. Really? He then showed us where it stated this on the menu, in tiny print on the bottom. Then he said they did that so people wouldn t stiff them and also said he didn t care if we contacted the owners to complain as they are the ones who implemented this policy . No wonder the service here is so bad- they don t care as the know they are getting a 20% tip regardless. This practice is unethical and we will be contesting the charge with our credit card as service was not rendered. I will never come back to this place. Terrible vibe, rude/neglectful service, and overpriced. Too many other great places in Austin that don t treat patrons with this much disrespect.

Interesting vibe. Cool atmosphere. Decent drinks that arent anything to write home about. The service is atrocious. The hostess is rude and incompetent. The bartender is overwhelmed and flighty. They cant get drinks to you in a reasonable time frame. They are arbitrary in their order of service. They are slow beyond belief given that the cocktail product is a B+ at best. They cant even make sure there is soap or drying napkins in the bathroom. This place needs a reboot. The building blocks are there, but the execution is insultingly sub par.

Having been here since before the pandemic, I had high hopes, but as soon as we entered we were reprimanded for going inside without being explicitly let in. Mind you, we had reservations and were waiting outside ringing the bell. Once inside, the bartender was excellent and the drinks were decent, but the hostess pursued her vendetta against us. 20 minutes after being seated we were presented with our check in advance with little warning letting us know we had to close out soon. Before we had a chance to say anything at all, the hostess rushed off again. We decided to simply do our part and try to leave as soon as possible as we felt unwelcomed, which made the decadent drinks in front of us difficult to enjoy. After 20 more minutes we were attended by the hostess who appeared surprised to our dismay, we did our best to explain but the blank expression in her face was sufficient. We left as quickly as possible after paying feeling unfulfilled and with a $60 tab with 2 drinks and a slice of cake. Next time, Here nor The has my everlasting business.

I normally do not post negative reviews but somethings gotta give. On a POSITIVE note though, they made a wonderful corpse reviver number 2 on request and the appetizers were wonderful. The decor was nice here, but not suited for parties greater than 2, especially if you intend on dining/snacking. Has real potential. Service was pretty solid.

I was pleasantly surprised by Milonga. Despite having to have a reservation to get in, the bar itself is funk and laid back. Completely lacks the pretentiousness that other reservation-only establishments have. Drinks were pricey but they are priced exactly how you would expect at a too Austin cocktail bar. We had four different cocktails and each were fantastic. Food was very reasonably priced and came with huge servings. Tastes delicious, too. Great place for a date night and a night with some close friends.

Waste of time and waste of money. I am a huge fan of speakeasys and go out of my way to find them. This is wayyyy over priced for the experience. We were told we were too early (5mins) waited outside, then brought in to find multiple open tables. Prices are $14-$19 per drink and the drinks were not impressive. Vibe was alright, decor is cute. But service was terrible. We asked for our check and the waitress asked how we wanted to split it. We had a full conversation about how to split it, 20 mins later I had to get up and go ask the bartender for our check which she was completely surprised by and then didn t split our check at all. We also were taken back that there was an automatic 20% gratuity charge for a table of 4, when she didn t deserve 20% in my opinion. Overall, it wasn t awful but definitely not worth returning and not worth the money.

Drinks were way overpriced and service was non existent, waited 20 minutes after asking for bill before they brought it with fewer than 10 people in the bar and two people managing the bar. They auto apply a 20% gratuity which based on the experience was a complete joke. There a lot of other speakeasy like bars in Austin that provide a much more engaging experience. As soon as we walked in the location smelled like bleach and the pipes hanging out of the ceiling added little charm. If you like cocktails go to a place like Firehouse, Whistlers, Red Headed Step Child, Here Nor There, or Roosevelt Room. I m not one for giving negative reviews but I would rather direct people who are looking for a good cocktail to a better bar. Pass this up for one of the above recommendations. More bang for your buck.
