What a cool little place. They offer parking passes too which is refreshing since parking can be so expensive everywhere in Austin.

I recently took an adult beginners acrylic painting class. I enjoyed the class but a few things to keep in mind - parking absolutely sucks. My class didnt start until 6 pm and I usually arrived about 40 mins early but there just isnt enough parking. I parked on the side at a meter and just waited until the free time kicked in (or if it was too hot and I didnt to wait in my car I would just risk it). Also, even though it was specifically a BEGINNERS painting class everyone in the class had either been to multiple classes before and knew most of the people there or were already pretty knowledgeable on their own. Some of the people in the class were even getting paid to do commissions as a side gig. Thats not a beginner, for Fs sake. So that part sucked a bit, as I was the only true beginner in the class. Ill be honest, that did make it a little bit more difficult since concepts werent explained as thoroughly as they would have been with real beginners. Idk how you would filter that kind of thing but people... Please dont sign up for the beginner course if youre not really a beginner. A lot of times I would go home and watch YouTube vid afterwards to really understand what was going on because again, IM A BEGINNER.

A true gem. This venue offers a very pleasant place for events. Close to great options for dining and leisurely strolls. Saw Acute Inflections here. A unique blend of jazz and Caribbean flavored music. The duet is from Brooklyn/Queens NY and play off of each other in a beautiful way.

Another one star review for the adult classes. I had a really bad experience here and when I started talking to others about it I found out I wasn t the only one. The ceramics program is poorly run, the rules aren t clear, the teachers are pretty hands off, and the staff is catty. Once I was told I had a behavior infraction on my record and not only was I not allowed to return but all of my work was taken by one of the higher ups and I was told it wouldn t be returned until I talked to them about what I did which I never found out what that was. I have talked to two other adults who have had this happen (one in tears) and one teacher who quit. I dropped my second class and wasn t even refunded all of my money. Don t waste your time with these creepy people, there are other places to take ceramics.

A great community resource for the arts! I really appreciate the free workshops they offer for artists on the business side of being a professional artist. I often check out the Dougherty Arts Center on Facebook for the latest news and upcoming events, theyre always up to date and I like the frequency and variety of offerings. The location is convenient, just be careful driving or biking down Barton Springs road. People can drive pretty fast down there. Its right next to Butler park which is lovely to check out as well if you have time.

I went to an open mike. There was a poet accompanied by a guitar. A man with 40 different harmonicas playing harmonica in a way Id never seen. There was a lady who sang a Hebrew song first in Hebrew and then translated to English and then she showed her book about her life as a sweet pea. A guitarist played some original songs. A 3 person band were a lot of fun. And then a cospiracy theorist with tales of the government destroying her life and causing the suicides of both of her brothers and giving her a case of temporary induced venereal disease........ All in all a very eclectic evening had by all.

How do I even talk about the place where our family and so many other families can celebrate art. Sometimes it s our kids art. Sometimes it s other fascinating shows . I particularly enjoyed the tall colorful crazy art structure that was out in front a few years ago. I want it or something like it back. It s a place where artists and enjoyment of art are made. Sometimes I stop when driving by and not in a hurry, to smell what s cooking.

Essential venue for the artistic community of austin, hosting great performances and helping to support and sustain the artists they host. Frequently offers free rehearsal space for a variety of local theatre companies and the like, especially those that work with children. A great education force and resource as well. Never a bad night to go to the DAC, even if its just to look at the pieces on display before you stop by that weird sketchy McDonalds on Barton Springs Rd. (I recommend the adjacent What-A-Burger instead) Would and very much will be coming here again, as well as having been many times in the past. Austin wouldnt be the same without it.

This review is for the summer camp program. The teachers and classes themselves are great but the registration process is terrible and the administrators have an air of self-important bureaucrats. My older son has attended every summer for a few years but after dealing with said administration regarding an issue that came up this year, we are unlikely to return. While disappointing, the outcome of the issue is not what bothered me so much as the attitude.

The aging and unkept facilities I could deal with but at least create good classes with good teachers. I took a beginner painting class which was as different from the description as I could imagine. It was basically 3 hours of painting on your own with no instruction. Nor did the teacher seem capable or have the desire to put in effort towards actually teaching skills.

The DAC was once a neat venue that unfortunately is hurting the arts due to numerous restrictions added to the use of the theater.
